appropriate wedding gift – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-977/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-977/#respond Sat, 15 Nov 2014 20:05:03 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-977/

Appropriate Monetary Wedding Gift??

I’m attending a wedding tomorrow night with my family (there will be four of us). The bride is my best friend’s sister and the groom I hardly know. The couple lived in Seattle and now Kentucky, but the wedding is being held in Michigan where the bride grew up. What is an appropriate wedding gift to give if we hardly (if ever) see the couple?? It’s my best friend’s sister; however, even when she lived in Michigan, we rarely saw her. The wedding is being held outside in the garden of a banquet center and the reception is in the banquet center. Food is buffet style and I know they didn’t spend a ton of money on cake/favors. Any suggestions would be great! (But please no whatever you can afford!)

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t like it when people base the gift money on what the couple serves at the wedding. Not a good way to judge what you should give in return.

You should base it on how close you are to the couple, and what your relationship is to them. You don’t talk to them too often, so you probably don’t need to go all out, but the bride is your best friend’s sister, so you shouldn’t be skimpy, either.

I would say anything from the $50-$75 range would be acceptable.

Also, does the couple have a gift registry? If so, you really should find out where it is and stick to that. Money is great and all, but they would probably want something from their registry instead. Or maybe something more thoughtful if that’s not an option. Something like movie tickets and a dinner gift certificate would be really cute, and probably wouldn’t cost you that much. Kind of like a “Your first date as a married couple is on us.” Very unique, thoughtful without putting too much effort into it, and everyone’s happy … And you come across as awesome.

gift for the gardening, composting dad?

im trying to figure out a fathers day gift for my dad, and i would like to make it myself. whats a good gift for my dad who loves his compost bin & vegetable garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Twirly things are cool. Like, spin in the wind toys. Pretty but also can scare away certain pests like fruit or worm eating eating birds.

Like this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pinwheel

plastic is cool of course, or laminated but paper would let you print images off the net. I do Like the solid colors they show in that how2 but just saying since it is father’s day like if u know how to print up pix of yourself and family.

If u make the blades rounded instead of pointy and color it right it will look like a flower. But also i have seen some that managed to make the center round somehow. Adding a disk or just cutting it right. If u add spacer between disk and part that spins then face can stand still while petals spin.

Other famous one for dads is the tshirt. U can write or tiedye with bleach. Or dye with koolaid. And also u got the transfers but that is cash, like $8 for ten sheets? But i mean the paper u can iron onto a shirt; u print a picture on the paper first by using the regular computer printer, so u can use family pix or personal art.

Then of course a card. Or ‘coupons’. Like for one weed picking session or one car washing, one hug, one movie together, etc. It varies on what u think he needs and what u like plus if u want to just make nice ones or ones that will mostly be budgeting time spent together.

Cards u can make online and print out besides all the other ways. Some sites are better than others:
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkkW9zDpK8i4AwYRXNyoA?p=custom+printable+father%27s+day+card&fr=b1ie7&fr2=sb-top&sao=1

a funny thing online is making your own magazine cover. Like gardening dad of the year or whatnot:
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkkEw0DpKwfIAvgRXNyoA?p=make+magazine++cover+-.makezine.com&y=Search&fr=b1ie7&fr2=sb-top&sao=1

idk if ur dad is online but here in a good link to email him:
http://www.geocities.com/missbanji/seedswapping.html

^to seed swap boards, usually can get for SASE if u have none to trade. Dont go to daves cause its a pay place. Check for level of activity b4 u sign to any tho. Some are relatively inactive.

Also, even if he is not online, lots of dads like to read. Online u can find him neat texts to share and keep him up to date. Maybe try searching with your area plus the words “soil survey” for texts he would find fundamental. Also, if he likes to try growing new things it is easy to get very important but obscure details online. Here is how to find local or cultivation info…

Well, i’m going to link u to two threads actually, one about how to find info but the other about making your own fertilizer because it is relatively new and bears heavily on compost tech:

so here they are:

Laura asks…

What would be an appropriate wedding gift for my nephew?

When my daughter was married, my sister came to the wedding with her adult children and gave only one gift represented to be from the whole family but the value of the gift was only about $50.00. although they certainly have the means to do better. Now, my nephew is getting married and I, as well as my adult children were invited. Should we reciprocate in the same manner or get individual gifts?
One person referenced it being for my nephew, not my sister but as I mentioned, even this nephew did not give my daughter a gift at her wedding.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Your choice…personally I would get him something you know he will use that no one else will buy: yard equipment. Like shovels, rakes, a high quality 50 ft roll of garden hose…or all of you could chip in and give a home depot gift card. Everyone always gives toasters and housey crap…give them something they won’t get two of and actually make good use of. If everyone who can tosses 100 onto a gift card….well, kinda says it all, doesn’t it?

Jenny asks…

Any ideas for a gift for an avid gardener who lives in California?

It’s for my dad. He plants a lot of flowers around the house and has a garden that he grows vegetables in. He seems really into bulbs (whatever those are). Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

It seems like your dad has a keen interest in gardening. And you said he is into bulbs what I would suggest is buy to LED Grow Lights, he would definitely like it. I will give a brief idea about what it is, “LED lights are typically offered in a variety of colors to use at appropriate stages of vegetative growth and they produce such little heat, they have little risk of burning your plants; they do not require you to additionally purchase cooling fans.” My brother has doing indoor vegetable gardening for over a year and it is perfect for plants and he knows a lot of stuff about gardening.

Richard asks…

What is an appropriate gift for two muslim girls?

I am American and am going to visit a fairly strict muslim family that likes in France. Does anyone have an idea for gifts for the two daughters, who are 13 and 9? Thanks so much!

GardenersCardiff answers:

A Razanne doll for the younger daughter. Link:
http://www.noorart.com/shop_category/razanne_doll_toys

Coloring books (Dover makes really nice ones) that feature animals, birds, gardens, flowers (but not people) and nice color pencils for the older daughter, and possibly the younger would be very nice as well. Skip any books that have dogs, or pigs as well.

Jewelry making kits would be popular.

Paint by numbers (do not get puppies, people or farm ones with pigs).

Tandy Leather products makes some simple kits that would be appropriate. Again, flowers, or designs.

The card game Uno.

Breyer horses (especially arab horses).

Also here’s a link to a web site that sells Muslim toys:
