Mary asks…

Will the government make it illegal to grow and share your own food?

The “safe food bill” was going to make it illegal to share the food from your own garden with other people.

Will the feds do this? Is it a good idea?

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are laws in Los Angeles that prevents sharing foods in certain circumstances. Some to prevent the spread of pest, but others is to protect business or heighborhoods from chage. The safe food bill won’t touch that though.

Helen asks…

Do you think the government will start taxing people for hunting and growing their own food?

That is if most people start hunting and growing their own food.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hunting, they all ready do.

Growing food, no, unless you sell it.

Mary asks…

What qualifications do you need to own a coffee shop?

I would like to own my own coffee shop/cafe when I grow up but what qualifications do I need?

There is a Best Answer !

Keep it simple but good!

GardenersCardiff answers:

In order to have a successful business I would suggest
– having experience in coffee shops/cafe – especially management experience
– completing business courses/certificates
– writing a business plan
– obtain financing but don’t overextend yourself!

Good luck!

Chris asks…

where can i find a full grown coffee tree to buy?

I want to start growning my own coffee, but, not wanting to wait several years for my first cup of home grown coffee. Is there somewhere I can buy a coffee tree that is already producing the cherries (coffee seeds)?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You probably won’t have much luck finding one that is allready fruiting. They are a bit big by the time they get to that size. I can understand not wanting to wait 4 or five years, I’ve got seed germinating right now and will have to wait. The closest I think you will get is one that is already a couple 3 years old, 2′ tall or so. These folks have arabica in 3 gallon pots for a decent price. Brings you much closer to the size you want and cuts down on the wait.

What qualifications do you need to own a coffee shop?

I would like to own my own coffee shop/cafe when I grow up but what qualifications do I need?

There is a Best Answer !

Keep it simple but good!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t think you’d need any qualifications really. It’s more business, cooking & hygiene skills. Which, upon starting a business (With your local Business Gateway) you will get access to these courses!

Susan asks…

How to creat well drained soil?

I am planning on putting in a cutting garden and was looking at some catalogues yesterday. All the flowers I was interested in needed well drained soil and I am pretty sure the area I will be planting in has pretty heavy clay soil.

I have heard that if you just dig out the clay and replace it with compost you create basically tubs that do not drain well. So I need to know how best to improve the drainage. I am looking to fit the area in Aug-Sept for planting in late Sept or Oct.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yea, removing the clay helps, but what you really need to do it amend the soil. Remove some clay , till the area and then add compost, sand, dried leaf litter, dried grass clippings, manure, and then till again. You will need to do this for several years and eventually your clay soil will become beautiful healthy soil. I know because I live in OK and we are loaded with clay and that is what I do to my soil. You wouldn’t even know that I started with clay if you saw my soil now. You’ll need to continue to add compost and amendments to your soil yearly to keep it healthy. Good luck

Helen asks…

I’m looking for an open source pictorial catalog of (seedling to plant identification) and garden pests?

If you know of any I would be happy to see them, I often times find myself struggleing to find out harmful from benificial insects, and distinguishing weeds from seed planted seedlings. I believe a pictorial identification guide would be very helpful. If one does not exist perhaps we should start one?
🙂
Zymo
Thanks!
So I take it you have been unable to find a complete source for this as well?
If I could I would give you all the best answer.
🙂
Zymo
thanks again, I like all of the suggestions.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well, at least for bugs, this is a head start:

Seedlings can look pretty similar for several weeks and you have to wait until they start to differentiate from each other

Ruth asks…

littlest pet shop wii-in need of help!?

I’ve been playing this game and unlocked the garden, but can’t unlock the jungle or winter levels. I have gotten blue ribbons on easy, medium, and hard levels of all mini games and have made sure all my pets are “happy” and have high energy-but nothing new will unlock! argh! and I can’t find any cheats or walk throughs online except for how to unlock the giraffe. I got that. but what do I have to do to unlock more pets or the other two worlds? please help! thanks.

GardenersCardiff answers:

To unlock the winter and the jungle levels, we answered the mail in the mailbox. It took about 5 hours of play to get there. After using the cheat codes for the giraffe. We began answering all the mail. The winter level came first then the jungle. Good Luck.

Mandy asks…

i just cant make my mind up about which breed :(?

i have looked through SOOOOO many breeds for the past few months and just cant settle properly on one. i LOVE labs and that has been my choice from the beginning and loads of people have said that they are the best first dog to have, also my sister is disabled and is in a wheelchair so a lab would be big enough for her to stroke and they are good therapy dogs too. but are labs easy to train? i’ve also heard that overbreeding in the past few years has made them aggressive : i have a big garden and i would be able to take the dog on 2-3 long walks a day also on trips to the park, beach etc so it would get quite a fair amount of excercise a day. also since its my first dog i would obviously prefer a breed that was fairly easy to train. mainly just basic manners and a few obedience things like ‘sit, down etc’ also good to train on the lead and to house train too.
i dont know whether to adopt a young dog from a shelter or get a puppy. i would love a puppy so that i could bond with it from being really young and be able to train it myself so the puppy would get used to our lifestyle very early and easy and be able to know our rules etc. but also i know puppys can be alot of work and to be honest i’m not very patient. but if the breed was easy to train then i suppose i could manage to train them properly after watching alot of Victoria Stilwell’s training video’s etc because i love her training techniques. but i have recently thought about getting a young dog from a shelter who needs a home, but then again what if they dont like our lifestyle? my mam wanted to get a retired greyhound but then again it might not be used to our lifestyle and all the noises etc in our home and that would take a while to get used to etc. where as a puppy, will just get used to them from day one and be used to them his whole life. : sorry for all the writing but basically i would like to know, should i get a puppy or a young dog from a shelter and what breed?!?! thanks alot! x

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try www.petfinder.com or your local shelter. Ask your shelter to contact you when they get a dog that suits your lifestyle. There are also breed rescues. How to find a good breeder-http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/findingbreed…
