David asks…

How can I write a complaint letter to Better Homes and Gardens magazine?? I can’t find their address anywhere!?

not the one in Australia either, just the regular Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Go to pipl.com and search it and it should give you the address

Lisa asks…

do you know any good Garden magazines?

Also any Garden advise would be good

GardenersCardiff answers:

Organic Gardening is my personal favorite. The Herb Companion is another good one. The Farmers Almanac, Horticulture Magazine and Mother Earth News are also good sources if information. My local library subscribes to all of these so check out yours and see what they have. Best advice- Use lots of clean compost and rotate veggie crops yearly. Good luck

Helen asks…

I’m making a scrapbook with magazines/pictures of me & my friends/family. What are good magazines to use?

I want to buy some magazines to cut up and use the letters to spell stuff, and I want lots of cool/ interesting pictures. I’m 17 years old by the way, so Better Homes & Gardens, isn’t what I’m looking for.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Good Housekeeping? Just kidding! LOL

Why not go to a place that sells magazines, and look through a few to see what you want. You’ll see what is available that way, and can better make a choice. I don’t know what your definition of “cool/interesting” is for this, and I’m far from 17, so I don’t know what is even out there for your age group.

Sounds like a really fun project though! Scrapbooking is a very big thing now, so you will find some neat papers and other things in the hobby section at stores, too! Have fun doing this!

George asks…

How much does it cost to advertise in Magazines.?

I would like to find out ad rates for different magazines from Home and Garden to Playboy does any one know how to find out these rates.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most magazines have their rates available on their website.

Go to www.playboy.com – scroll all the way down to the very bottom in the lower left corner – it says “advertise with playboy”. See online/magazine rate card.

For better homes and gardens, go to www.bhg.com – again at the bottom under BHG.com click on Better Homes and Gardens Media Kit

Good luck!

Donald asks…

Which of these magazines should I choose a free 1-year subscription to?

Good Housekeeping
Esquire® Magazine
Harper’s BAZAAR® Magazine
Traditional Home
Better Homes and Gardens
Details Magazine

I’m a male in my 30s. I was thinking of choosing either Details or Esquire. However, I’ve read Better Homes & Gardens in the past, and it was actually interesting.
Uh, I guess I should’ve mentioned that these are the ONLY choices available.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Ehhh, those are kind of gay choices there sir. So I’d go with Esquire because thats the only one that isn’t.

Ruth asks…

Betty asks…

Help with gardening please im a beginner?

I’m 23 and suffer from Alcoholism and Depression and I’m on medication but my dr also wants me to get a hobby something to focus on and I thought I love walking round my granddads garden so maybe I could start that. But I haven’t got a garden so thinking about getting a patch at an allotment. Only problem is I don’t know the first thing about gardening lol so are there any magazines or anything for beginners? Thanks 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

You might consider container gardening which would make it easier to see your plants close at hand. You can go to the library and check out a book or two on how to do it-or google the type of plants you want to grow and see what their specific needs are. I just got a agrotower which I’m going to grow strawberries in-in the first couple of layers-then I’m planning on growing herbs in the next layers. I can’t wait to see the results. Gardening can be very rewarding-and it does occupy time and brain matter which certainly helps with depression! Good luck.

Lizzie asks…

Where can you find the wallpaper featured in Better Homes and Gardens February 2010 issue?

Its part of the color made easy section. Its called dream room on page 46. I saw the wallpaper and i love it but i don’t know where to find it. Help!

GardenersCardiff answers:

They usually have a resource section at the rear of the magazine. Otherwise, call the magazine’s editorial department and make a request. This happens all the time so they should be happy to help. Additionally, if the article lists the designer or location, you can try calling them.

James asks…

I MUST find this bedding set from one BHG book?

I went to the library and got the book COLOR SCHEMES MADE EASY by Better Homes and Gardens.
On page75 there is the most gorgeous bedding set. I MUST have it. I can’t find anywhere in the book where it lists the design or company name for it, nothing. I can’t find anything helpful on the BHG website.
Does ANYONE know where I can find this bedding?
it’s the NEW colors schemes made easy 2008 edition

GardenersCardiff answers:

You could contact BHG customer service and give them the details of the item and the book you saw it in. Try emailing them at this email address:
http://www.meredith.com/contacts.html
Good luck.

Betty asks…

Have you ever made soap from scratch?

I was telling my freind who works in a meat plant about us wanting to try making soap after I read about it in a homesteading book, and He Got 25 pounds of beef fat for me to try it with, It looks easy enough, if you have all the stuff, How did it go for you? My Honey wants to use some herbal teas to fortify it. we have all that stuff in the garden. I need to get the lye still, Hardware store? We are kinda freaky this way…
I thought about making the lye from wood ashes, too, but… well, maybe next time.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I’ve never made soap with Tallow before (tallow ends up clogging your pours in time)…

But here is a recipe for vegetable soap and help to make it:

This is the basic recipe we use when we test out the fragrance oil samples our labs send to us. This will make a nice 4 pound batch of long lasting, hard, bubbly soap.

Palm Oil 520 grams
Olive Oil 440 grams
Coconut Oil 400 grams
Lye 210 grams
Distilled Water 500 grams

Add Lye to Water (never water to lye) very slowly – wear protective eye ware and plastic gloves, set aside to cool.

Best place to add lye to water is outside. Make sure you don’t breathe the air in right over top of your bowl – it’ll blow your lungs out.

Heat Oils together & set aside to cool.

When both Oils and Lye/water have cooled to approx. 100 to 120 deg. F., slowly pour lye water in to the oils.
Stir with either a wooden spoon or use a braun handblender.
When the soap looks like pudding and leaves a TRACE (dribble the soap and if it stays on top like a little mound where you just poured – this is called Trace) then you’re ready to add in some herbs, botanicals, ground REGULAR oatmeal (NOT the quick rising) and/or colourants.
Once you add these in, stir and stir (at this point you need to work a little fast ’cause the soap is starting to harden).

Once you’ve stirred these in, add in your fragrance oil (or you can keep unscented, your choice).

Pour into molds.
Tap molds on the floor or counters to get rid of any air pockets in the molds.

Set soap aside for 24 to 48 hrs.
Unmold.

Cure/dry this soap for 3 to 4 weeks.
The longer you cure your soaps, the harder the bars will get, and the longer the bars will last.

Good luck.

Lizzie asks…

where can i obtain victorian gardening magazines?

GardenersCardiff answers:

This website is a Q & A page by Michael Weishan of PBS Victory Garden fame. This link will take you to the information you want:

http://www.michaelweishan.com/forumhld.html

Subscription and purchase links appear on the page where you can order the magazines you seek.

Good luck with your gardening.

David asks…

Whats your favorite gardening magazine?

Ive been thinking of subscribing to some magazines, I don’t know much about gardening but I’d like to start one next spring, vegetables and flowers, and I’ll prolly be planting some stuff this fall too (tulips! maybe other stuff too?) So some magazines with lots of information and tips would be nice. I was thinking of getting better homes and gardens, but I’m not sure, maybe that and another one.. Any suggestions?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Backyard Living! Http://www.backyardlivingmagazine.com/

This magazine has no advertisements. It has lots of great contests with small (wind chimes) and large (garden tractor) prizes. It also has lots of stories (funny and helpful) written by readers.

Backyard Living’s entire magazine is devoted to landscaping, planting, and gardening, while Better Homes and Gardens also features indoor decorating and cooking, as well as some self-improvement articles. It isn’t as gardener-intense as Backyard Living.

I am a landscaper/planter/gardener by hobby, and Backyard Living is a “never throw away” magazine!

Another poster suggested Birds and Blooms. This is also an excellent “no advertisement” magazine; I believe it’s published by the same folks that do Backyard Living and Taste of Home.

Joseph asks…

Are there any Home and Garden magazines that send free issues?

I’m just looking for monthly updates and stuff on new ideas for my home. Not really garden ideas so much. Any magazines or the like that send out free issues that you know of? Thanks.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Google free home and garden magazines.
