My 7 year old daughter wants to start a garden. I have no idea what to plant. I am looking at building something that has 4-6 2′ sections; allowing 3′ between each square to work them. I live in north-western Illinois. What would be some good vegetables for beginners? Do I want to mix flowers with vegetables? Any good websites for me to check out without being too in depth?
There are tons of websites for gardening kids. Garden Gate (a very good magazine) offers Kids Garden Plans. You can see it here:

Here are a couple searches to help you:

I think it is great that she wants to garden and wonderful that you are willing to accomodate it. Great parenting!

Which magazine do you regularly read? Which one do you trust? Sometimes I look at the article and keep wondering if people really buy the products they are trying to promote. So please tell me the magazine/journals you find useful in this respect. Thanks
I like family circle, ladies home journal, good housekeeping and martha stewart. Lots of good ideas. Remember, all magazines rely mostly on their advertisers for revenue, not subsriptions. Take what you like and leave the rest. And by all means, if you’re not happy with a purchase for any reason, return it, insisting on a full refund. If they want your business again in the future, they’ll also send you an apology and sometimes even a coupon for future use.

im looking for magazines that have good interior design and architecture…. and maybe some landscaping too. any suggestions?
Try interior design, ot Better Homes and Gardens. Both are available online and in print format.
Try your local B&N or other big bookstore- they have whole racks of magazines like these.

On Better Homes and Gardens “backyard wedding” they had a decking that clipped in to a brace type thing. It seemed easy.
Would that be like the ‘rent-a-dancefloor’ stuff at a rental store…..

Trying to liven up the garden and remain eco-aware to a degree. Most of the solar things I have tried have been useless so looking for some advice from you guys.
Go with the above answer, also i got beautiful solar string lights suitable for draping over a high bush or tree. I hung mine over my pampas and the result was beautiful at night. So good was it that i purchased another set for this year. I got these from the catalogue Betterware, but just recently i saw them in some of the chain store gardening sections. Well worth the money. (10 pounds sterling).

I am creating a garden using 2 small barrels. 39 litres each, I will be circulating the water between the 2 and want to know what size pond pump I will need?
That really depends on what kind of flow you want. You can have a trickle or a full blown water fall. Here is a site that might help you.
Remember if you get a pump that is a bit too large you can always restrict the flow on the discharge and make it fit you needs.
I would suggest you consider something like this:

I’m an awful cook, but my son is getting to that age where he can eat what we eat, and while frozen dinners are fine for me, I’m not going to raise him on pizza and spaghettios! So just looking for some suggestions of books and magazines that don’t have tons of crazy ingredients and are fast and easy, but also healthy. In my defense, I WAS raised on pizza and spaghettios, so I blame my lack of knowledge on that!
My favorite 2 cookbooks (other than the cookbooks compiled by the ladies at our church back home!) are from America’s Test Kitchen and the standard Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook.
Both have tons of basic, simple recipes that help you get started, and there are a lot of cooks’ knowledge sidebars in both that help someone starting from scratch get a good understanding of cooking. ESPECIALLY the basics – like if you want to hard boil eggs, what do you do?? These have instructions!!
Another great book is How to Boil Water. It was published by the Food Network & is great for beginners!

Im doing a level media and for my coursework i need to explore the development of magazines. The last thing i need to know is how have the contents of magazines changed over the years?
Todays magazines are full of half naked women, celebs and everything is sexually orientated. Yesterdays mags, had clothes, recipes, stories, gardening etc.

I want to redecorate my bedroom but i can’t seem to think what i want it to be like. What would be some good magazines that would give me ideas and hints about what i can make it like.
{I’d want to make it kinda girly-ish, if that sorta helps =D}
Domino Magazine is a good one:
http://www.dominomag.com/
Better Homes & Gardens:
http://www.bhg.com/decorating/
BH&G also has many “special interest” magazines that you can find on the newsstands with titles like “Beautiful Bedrooms,” “Cottage Style,” “Creative Home” and so forth. You should be able to find something from them.
Also “Country Living,” “Cottage Living,” “Home,” “InStyle Home,” “Elle Decor,” “Budget Decorating,” “Martha Stewart Living,” etc.

The poem would be most appropriate in a…
Gardening magazine
Cookbook
Literary magazine
Novel
POINT VALUE: 2.0 points
The author implies that…
The author is angry about an enemy stealing his apples
His friend took apples from his yard
A foe of his broke into his house
The author shared his anger in one instance and kept his anger to himself in another.
POINT VALUE: 3.0 points
All of the following can be inferred except…
Talking things out with a friend can settle issues.
Pent up anger can be dangerous for the person it is directed toward.
Tears and smiles can yield a bountiful apple harvest.
Wrath is something that has to be nurtured to grow.
POINT VALUE: 3.0 points
Why might the foe want the apple even though he knows it is the narrator’s?
He is hungry
He is in need of nourishment
Because it is the narrator’s

I recall seeing an article about Oudolf (and his wife) which showed pictures of his garden in the Netherlands and offered general information about his work. The article appeared in a U.S. gardening magazine( I think). My internet searches have not appeared to locate the specific article. I have an article about him from Fine Gardening (February, 04) – it is not the article I am trying to find. Thanks

We are remodeling our kitchen, and we liked a kitchen we saw in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine. My wife tore out the page, page Z4 from January 2007 issue. I got this issue out of the library, but no page Z4 (z as in zebra) (Better by Design – Comfort comes to the kitchen article). It must have been some supplement. Does anyone have this issue with this page? We are desperate for the kitchen specs from this article, which they often print at the end of the magazine. Please let me know if you have it, or have an idea what magazine it is really in…thanks!
Go to their home page and click on customer service in the upper right hand corner. Perhaps they will e-mail or fax that page. Or perhaps they have back issues for sale.

A few years back a female hummer came to my window feeder. In amazement, I watched as she had a baby on her back, while she fed. I had my camera handy, but could not get to the window carefully, before she took off. This would have made a fabulous picture. I’ve never seen any pics in garden magazines of this, and wondered if anyone else had ever seen a mama hummingbird take her baby for a ride.
sorry i believe i have entered this in the wrong category
Yes, I have and I DID get a picture….have a large zoom lens on my camera. Aren’t hummers the best fun to watch? I have 8 feeders in my yard.

I know someone who has had back surgery but loves to rake. I can’t find any bent handle yard leaf rakes anywhere, they’re supposed to take pressure off the back while raking. I’ve seen them in Better Homes and Garden Magazine but there wasn’t the option to purchase one. Please help.
We bought one about 5 years ago at Home Depot and we’ve never had to replace it! It was reasonably priced as I recall, and is really nice to use.
Good luck!

“We Gotta Get Out of This Place” by The Animals
The taps drip, the fridge needs defrosting every three weeks or it doesn’t work, the doors don’t close, we can only run power from half the outlets in the house, there is mould on the walls, the bogong moths don’t seem too keen to continue their journey down to the mountains once they see our place and the upstairs neighbour plays car racing video games till 2am (that’s when he’s not playing “lets rearrange the furniture” or slamming his front door every half hour)
There must be a better life!

It’s one of several in the article titled “Thoroughly Modern Meat Loaf”. The recipe I’m looking for has a teaspoon of beef bouillon granules, along with the traditional ingredients. Thanks for any help.
Thanks, Smokies Hiker. Am I missing the “link”, though?????
You are right, the meatloaf is great. I made it one time and meant to keep the recipe but I inadvertantly gave the magazine away before copying it. Bummer!
Here’s the link you’re looking for! This meatloaf is great! Straight from Better Homes and Gardens Magazine’s own Chef, Scott Peacock. Enjoy!

I try to put a fountain in my garden pond I would like to make it solar powered and don’t know how. I’ve see it in garden magazines and I would like to do that in my yard.
You can buy them. Oase makes the best one I know. That said, the technology for solar powered pumps is not as good as it could be and the failure rate is high. I wish they were higher on the list of important things to do.

I want to get my mom a magazine subscription. She is 50 and it is for Christmas. I was thinking either Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day, Better Homes & Gardens, or Ladies Home Journal. If you were a mother would you like any of them? Which is best? Any other suggestions in terms of magazines? Please do not suggest anything like Cosmo.
Those are all good options. I got my mom a subscription to All You magazine last year. It has a lot of great tips in it plus recipes & is a lot like these other magazines, but it also has coupons. There’s anywhere from $40 to over $100 in coupons every months.
