Ken asks…

Can I take my own coffee when I travel to mexico?

I really want to take our own coffee. Is this something we can take? Or will they take it from us before we get there?

GardenersCardiff answers:

No one will take your coffee if you bring it to Mexico. While you are at it take some coals to Newcastle! Why would anyone want to bring coffee to Mexico? We grow the best coffee in the world!

Hey Chotova! Café Colón of Coatepec, Veracruz! Many of my friends have it delivered to their homes. Love it!

Donna asks…

can you grow coffee from a coffee bean you find in stores?

Can you grow a coffee plant from coffee beans you find in dispensers at stores. If not what other unusual plants can you grow from simple things around your house like citrus fruits, or pomegranates, cotton, etc.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The seeds of coffee plants (Coffea spp.) tend to have a short viability period, so even if you found some beans that had not been roasted its not likely they would be viable.

Coffee plant seeds can be purchased and the plants can be grown, but if you plan on growing your own “coffee” that is not likely to be a successful plan, the plants are not unattractive and make an interesting novelty planting in suitable climates..

Joseph asks…

What is something nice I can make for my boss?

I have worked at the same independently owned coffee shop for almost two years now. I have grown very close with my boss and I love the company. Due to unfortunate financial circumstances and the bad economy, the shop has to close in one week. I would like to make or do something nice for my boss, but I’m not sure what. Any ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Go to a ceramics class. There you can paint a ceramic coffee mug for them. You can put anything on it you want, they do all the work after that. They look really pretty when they’re done too.

Mandy asks…

can you grow your own coffee here or is it the wrong climate?

florida

GardenersCardiff answers:

Growing regions typically offer moderate sunshine and rain, steady temperatures around 70ºF (20ºC), and rich, porous soil. I would imagine that Florida is somewhat on the hot side, therefore, for growing coffee, as it seems to lack mountainous areas where it would be cooler. (It is the mountains which make coffee going possible in nearby Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.)

Sharon asks…

can I grow coffee and chocolate at home?

I heard its illegal to grow your own coffee or chocolate plants. is this true?
I’m in California, USA if that matters.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It is not illegal to grow these plants.
Cacao is a very large plant and I do not believe it would be possible to grow this plant to maturity and fruiting indoors, and outside will require considerable space. It is not in the least hardy, so will require the warmest tropical climate for successful cultivation.

Coffee plants are readily available in most garden centers with a houseplant department. I have seen very nice starts in 4 inch pots at Home Depot. The plants are beautiful shrubs with glossy deep green leaves which in conditions the plant likes (humid jungle — indoors provide a location in a window which gets lots of bright light but little direct sun, and mist daily, or even a couple times a day, to boost the humidity the plant craves for optimal growth. In warm climate zones, coffee may be grown successfully, but they are also very tender, although not as unforgiving as the cacao.
In time, when the plant is sufficiently mature, it will bloom with deliciously fragrant white blossoms. When the plant finishes blooming, the spent flowers develop into showy red berries, which contain the coffee beans. It is unlikely that you would be able to grow enough houseplants, in the home garden, or even in a large home greenhouse to obtain enough coffee beans for use. Think of how many beans there are in a one-pound package of whole bean coffee, and how many cups of coffee you are able to get out of it. You would need to devote a large parcel of land and farm the plants for any reasonable production. However, as I said, Coffee plants are top-notch houseplants or warm-climate shrubs in all seasons, and an interesting conversation piece.

Donna asks…

Is growing your own cannabis legal in Vancouver Canada?

Is growing your own cannabis legal in Vancouver Canada? And also are there still coffee shops selling cannabis around? I’m generally just confused about this. Cant get a straight answer anywhere!

GardenersCardiff answers:

No its not legal, but it is way more chill than say…AMERICA! Although seems pretty easy to get medical mary jane there.

BUT there are some cafes where you can smoke, the vapo lounge in vancouver by hastings always lets you vaporize for $5 and even though they dont publish that they sell weed you most def can get some. And you can buy seeds as well to grow your own.
