Hi there, I’m currently in Kihei (Maui) and I’m looking to buy some large burlap coffee bags. Something similar to this: http://www.coffeesofhawaii.com/catalog/product/80 But, I would like to find one in a store here instead of buying online. Does anyone know who might sell these somewhere in or near Kihei? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

I just moved to a great area that is growing massively! i want to start my own coffee shack one at a time and get them all over this small city while it is open, there is little to no competition so i think its a good deal for far! i would like to know what it takes to open your own shop and what i will need to know, i have plenty of time and good work ethnic so i think this will work. Any help is appreciated.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You did not indicate where you are; or why you feel a city
in the US does not have many coffee shops; I claim that
in your city, there are many…….perhaps closed today or
hiding with poor signage or in inexpensive locales.

Can guide further

James asks…

addicted to coffee or nicotine?

or both?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My name is John and I am an addict.

I smoked fifty plus cigarettes per day and I have been clean for five years.
My addiction also included coffee abuse and I consumed 25 plus per day.
I owned an urn so I really don’t know how much I was consuming.
I thought it was O.K because most people drink coffee and the habit grew gradually. It took me decades to realise I was suffering from withdrawals when I didn’t get enough caffeine. Symptoms included and were not limited to sweats, bad migraines, and moodiness. I think that I may have been argumentative on these occasions.
I now don’t smoke at all and I consume coffee a few times per week.
I am no longer dependant on any chemicals of any sort!

Mark asks…

What should I sell in my coffee shop?

I’m thinking about owning a coffee shop when I grow up. I was wondering, what would be some good things to sell in it, I already know I’m gonna sell cupcakes, muffins, cookies, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, sandwhiches and other things like that. Any ideas for what else I should sell and what kind of music I should play?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You should sell panninis, theyr like long toasted sanwiches, as for music should be soft acoustic guitar maybe cat stevens album tea for the tillerman

James asks…

What would make a superb coffee shop/cafe?

I’m looking into the possibility of starting my own coffee shop/cafe. There are a lot of choices to make in deciding the look, feel, and taste of the cafe. Below, I’ve listed some possible elements of a coffee house. I would welcome any advice and suggestions; what would you look for in a coffee house experience. Also, what are the guidelines to using different brands of coffee that are available in the market, and do you have any suggestions on how to make the coffee house experience unique if using market brand coffee? Thank you.

1. Exotic coffee
2. A coffee house theme (tropical, Christian bookstore, etc.)
3. Serving other beverages (tea, smoothies, etc.)

P.S. please be creative and give me some unique ideas.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think a lot of answers are going to depend on where you are. For instance, if you have a lot of coffee shops in your area, you might try setting yourself apart by offering unusual alternatives, like white coffee. But if you will in an area without a lot of competition, I would start with the basics and add on as customers make suggestions… And they will.

As to a theme, again it would depend, but this would depend more on you and your interests because you would know enough about those interests to really make a special place around them. For instance, if you love reading and literature, you might want to start a coffee shop based around a library theme. Then you could have authors come in and do signings and readings or you could offer your shop on certain evenings for book clubs.

Tea is a must. Not everyone drinks coffee, but they might want to hang out with their friends who do. We offer many different teas in black, green, and herbal, even a few white and red teas. Some other good alternatives are juices, chai, hot cocoa, and cold drinks, like iced teas.

Smoothies willl probably depend on where you are located. We are right next to a couple of schools and smoothies and frozen shake type drinks are among our best sellers. Starbucks number 1 seller, winter and summer, is their frappuccinos.

Having great coffee will be your biggest asset. Do some research on the net and ask for samples. Our customers really like coffees that are locally roasted, so you might want to go that route. It also allows quick delivery of coffee, the day after roasting, which really improves quality. We also have triple certification fo our coffee, organic, fair trade, and shade grown, and we have customers comment every day on that. But we are also in a big city with a lot of awareness of ecological concerns and a lot of other coffee shops around, so we have to stand out.

Good luck!

Daniel asks…

Why do coffee beans need to be roasted?

What does roasting do for the coffee?

I am thinking about juicing beans, to create a very strong cup of coffee, that does not have any burnt taste.

For this I believe that I should use un-roasted green coffee beans.

I have a lot of ignorance in this area though and need help and suggestions.

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you have ever tasted under-roasted (or even green) coffee, you would find that it has an extremely sour, acrid, flat, and unpleasant flavor.

During the roasting process, several chemical reactions (including the Maillard process, Strecker degredation, and caramelization) take place between the sugars and amino acids in the beans. These reactions are responsible for developing the flavors, aromatics, and sweetness within a coffee. Through extensive tasting, smelling (during and after the roast), and science, an excellent roaster should be able to find the best balance of flavors within a bean.

When coffee is initially tasted (before purchasing from the farm), it is always done so with a light roast. This amplifies the flavors of the beans themselves, but it also amplifies the defects. Many roasters will choose a darker roast in order to mask any of these defects and create their own consistent “signature roast” flavor. It is impossible for a large coffee company to achieve consistency between batches with a light roast – coffee is a seasonal crop and varies far too much, even from hillside to hillside on the very same farm. Even with the world’s best roasters, when consistency is more important than quality, the end product quality suffers.

If all the coffees you have tasted have a burnt taste, I would wager that you have never had the opportunity to taste exceptional coffee. If you are interested, I would recommend searching for local roasters on www.coffeegeek.com. Look for high quality coffees from farms who have won awards such as the Cup of Excellence. Look for a shop that advertises the roast date, not expiration date. Coffee is generally best between 4 and 10 days after roasting. Look for lighter roasted beans that do not appear black or show visible oils. Ask questions! A passionate roaster will be willing to tell you way more than you ever wanted to know about his or her coffee. Many smaller “third wave” coffee shops will focus on quality above all else, even if it means that the flavor of their coffee is constantly changing with the seasons and growing conditions.

By the way, you might have just opened Pandora’s box of coffee – enjoy your journey.

William asks…

Amsterdam weed coffee shops question?

What is the legal age to buy and smoke pot in those coffee shops?
How many grams is legal?
Can you guys grow your own weed?
Are foreigners allowed to smoke pot everywhere?

I’m thinking about having a vacation trip in Amsterdam after I saved money. I’m 17 fyi.
Thanks :))

GardenersCardiff answers:

1. It’s not legal and indeed sales is tolerated under given conditions only on which their licence depends. One of those conditions is you have to be 18 to both enter and purchase from a coffeeshop (and yes you have to show an original ID such as a passport to prove it

2. Coffeeshops can sell up to 5 grams, per person per day (another of the licence conditions). Carrying 5 grams around will not get you any trouble. Up to 30 grams is a minor offence and of course over 30 grams you will have a hard time convincing anyone that it is for your own use and you are not dealing

3. You can grow up to 5 plants for personal use and will not be punished (although the legality again is a debatable issue). Tough measures are taken if found cultivating more than this

4. Consumption of pot is not illegal, however it is frowned on and as a matter of respect you don’t walk around with a joint hanging out of your mouth. There is also a tobacco ban in the Netherlands in public places so you cannot smoke in offices, railway stations, trams etc etc and this was also extended (to a degree) to bars, cafe’s etc for tobacco. If you are smoking around other people you will get told to put it out, but if you smoke in quiet area of a park away from especially older people, kids, families etc then you won’t get troubled

One other thing you should be aware of is the current government places to limit coffeeshops to Dutch residents only in the future (date not known yet) and therefore tourists will not be permitted to purchase. This was one of the plans of the coalition government, so if drugs are the sole reason for coming to Amsterdam, then you should keep in touch with the news as it will be a wasted trip otherwise

You can read the facts (as there is a lot of fiction on the net and in people’s heads) about laws here in this document produced by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs http://www.minbuza.nl/dsresource?objectid=buzabeheer:58788&type=pdf

David asks…

What’s your favorite mondegreen?

For those who don’t know, a mondegreen is a misunderstanding of something such as song lyrics. For example, some people heard the song “Go your own way” by Fleetwood Mac as “Grow your own weed“. I know we’ve all misheard songs before and embarrassed ourselves by singing them in the car, so post your funniest ones here.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I’ve had some mondegreens…some stupider than others. For the longest time I thought the line “people think I’m insane because I am frowning all the time” from Paranoid was “people think I’m insane because I am browning overtime”. And I used to think that the line “gunpowder gelatine” in Killer Queen was “got that agility”.

Susan asks…

Could you eat weed? (not to get high)?

Just grow your own weed plant and eat it with a salad? Would that be healthy? Does marijuana even taste good as a plant?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Fresh, unprocessed marijuana is safe to eat, and you will not get high from it. As for nutritional content, all I can find is with hemp seed oil, which is a nice source of Omega -3.

As for the taste, well, one might acquire for the flavor! I find it to be either too dry or too sticky to consider eating. Give it a shot and tell us about it, eh?
