Sharon asks…

How do you create a community garden on a slight incline?

I’m a novice to gardening and we are planning to create a community garden. The area suggested is on a slight incline. Maybe 20-30 degree. What are the particular challenges involved in creating a garden in such a landscape and also how would you do a community garden in such an area? We’ll need a deer fence too. Please help!
Our garden is only 20×20 big … please advise.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try using a raised bed garden which conforms to the incline.

Mark asks…

How do I start a garden in a small space?

I have a small area for gardening and have never tried before but I would like to start my own garden. I know I want to plant tomatoes and other veggies, anything that is simple to grow. When do I plant each particular plant?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hey there – good on you for starting your veggie garden. 🙂

It really depends what you want to plant as different things obviously harvest at different times.

Try these sites to help you out.

http://www.yates.com.au/garden-guide/videos/growing-vegetables/

This second site will also help you out with ‘how’ to grow, not only ‘when’.

Another option is to check the back of seedling packets OR a good bet is whatever is at your local nursery now is what is in season.

Good luck & happy growing.

Ruth asks…

Is a grow tent good for indoor gardening?

I will move into an apartment next month and I really like gardening. I want to purchase a grow tent for indoor gardening. Does any one know whether it is easy to use? Or should I buy any other accessories?

GardenersCardiff answers:

With a grow tent, you can enjoy the fun of gardening indoor even your home is not spacious. What’s more, a grow tent may be used in conjunction with a hydroponics system, which allows you to garden and grow plants without the use of soil. This sounds really amazing for those who live at the top of an apartment building and have nowhere to get rich soil to for encourage plants to thrive.

If you are planning to get a grow tent for indoor gardening, I suppose you would like to use it with the hydroponics system. In order to make the best use out of the grow tent, you should also get a few indoor gardening supplies to round out and complete your plant growing setup.

One of the most important hydroponics supplies is indoor grow light. The grow tents are usually square shaped and can be totally enclosed so the grow lights will take the place of sunlight most of the time. Use the indoor grow lights to mimic natural sunlight is good for your plants.

Since there is no soil for your plants to thrive, the plant food is another necessity. The plant food which is known as nutrient can be mixed into water to create a nutrient solution in hydroponic gardening. Another advantage of use the nutrient is that you can use different amounts of it to suit specific types of plants at certain stages of growth.

Using hydroponics has many advantages but there is still a drawback that: because the crown of the plant is always submerged in water, it gets rot easily. You can use nets or trays to prevent this from happening, and use pumps to change the water level so that the roots can take up the liquid food.

Helen asks…

What are the easiest things to grow indoors?

Say from your own experience from growing things indoors. I would like to know because I would like to grow indoors during the winter plus I live in an apartment.

Fruits, Vegetables, and Herbs anything simple that don’t need extremely huge pots.

Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you are looking for ornamental plants to grow indoors, the Pothos is almost impossible to kill! It is an attractive, viney plant that will grow in bad soil, withstand forgetting to water it, and does well in filtered to dim light (bright sun will burn the leaves). Spider plants are also very forgiving, as are heart-leafed philodendrons (I have one of those that I’ve had for almost 8 years, it has moved 4 times with me, and actually spent two days locked in a trailer while we drove through the desert and it STILL survived! It has tendrils more than 10 feet long!). Plants from the Ivy family are also easy to grow and very forgiving of neglect.

Fruits and veggies are not so easy to grow indoors, but some herbs will do well if you have a very sunny window sill for them. I almost always have a pot of basil in the kitchen window and thyme, parsley, oregano and marjoram do well on windowsills.

Betty asks…

I’m starting a mini greenhouse what do I need to start growing?

So I’ve learned you can start your own garden with an egg carton. I want to put various tomato seeds, a few herbs and red onion into it. then pot them. I’m in Minnesota and it’s just started to warm up here for the summer. Now I need some advice on how to do this properly.

I was hoping to put all the plants into one pot, would they turn out alright?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Im not sure what you mean by a mini greenhouse; something say 8ft x 8ft you can walk in? A cold frame on the ground? (i have both, in ohio)
it may be late to start tomatoes in minnesota, when they give a “75day” maturity on the packet, thats time from transplanting…typically one would start seed 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting…

With that caveat, i think an egg carton is too shallow to seed in, but you might get away with it if you transplant quickly after you get 2 true leafs…growing tomatoes in a pot takes at least 2 gallons, with 5 gallons size better; the roots of onion and herbs wouldnt compete, so id imagine you could grow a few alongside…if youre going to keep the pot in your greenhouse, it will grow faster than outside; and to keep the greenhouse warm in the fall use 5 gallon black water buckets to absorb daytime heat, and thus keep the greenhouse warmer at night

Blonde Cookbook……well it’s funny, don’t you think?

Blonde Cookbook
It’s fun to cook for Tom. Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbors were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls.
Tom wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn’t dress. What a surprise when Tom brought a friend home for supper
A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can’t say it improved the rice any.
Today Tom asked for salad again I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients; lay on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Tom asked me why I was rolling around in the garden..
I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in a bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left.
Tom did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. I don’t have any clothes that fit it, and for some reason Tom keeps counting to ten.

Tom’s folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast but all I had was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius.. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment.

GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a very exciting week! I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Tom. If I can talk Tom into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with a chocolate moose.

Help with a community garden?

Anyone got any ideas, on what kind of material I would use for home-made, water-proof, name-plates for a community garden?…..We have 4 large, raised beds, sectioned off, so each gardener has their own plot…I want to place their names in each plot. Any wisdom, or crafty folks out there that have done this? Or know of a cheap & easy way to accomplish this?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You could use small sections of a branch. If you know someone with a chain saw or skill saw it should be easy to do. The branch should be about 4 inches across and that would be big enough to burn in the names. Then burn the names in with a wood burning tool. I bought one at Walmart for $12. If you drilled a hole in the top you could put a piece of wire with a hook on top so you can stick it in the ground. You could use these year after year.

You can also use soda cans. Cut off the top and bottoms and flatten the middle. Now in the center over something that has give–like a 1/2 inch foam or a stack of paper napkins write the names with an old ball point pen. The soft metal will indent. Now go over the name with a permanent marker and your names will show in black. Bend a wire into a u shape or use plant staples. Wearing gloves so you don’t get cut and using a pliers bend the side cut part over the wire on each side and then flatten the can and you have a marker

Chris asks…

Mini Fridge Help, Easy Ten Points?

With some extra left over money, I’ve decided to buy a mini fridge for my room. I only have about $40-$50 to use, and I have narrowed it down to two choices:

http://www.amazon.com/Koolatron-KWC-4-Coca-Cola-Personal-Fridge/dp/B000JLNBW4/ref=pd_sbs_k_1

and

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/183-1683564-5702431?asin=B000MFIKM8&AFID=yahoo_df&LNM=Home_and_Garden&ref=tgt_adv_XPYD0100

Which is the better choice? I know that they’re both the same size and even have the same theme, but they’re made by two different companies, and they both got good reviews.

Also, if you’ve had either of these, could you tell me what you thought of it?

Please recommend any other mini fridges that you’ve gotten that are good, and within my money limit.

Thanks, and remember, it’s an easy ten points to get if you give em a good, thorough answer!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have the one from target, and it works very well. It’s a good mini fridge. I would recommend getting that one. 🙂
it is worth the money 🙂

Nancy asks…

Can you save money growing your own food?

Although I currently live in an apartment, I’m very interested in the practice of urban homesteading and being more self-reliant. I’m interested in the possibility of renting space in a community garden and growing vegetables. Has anyone on here ever done that? I don’t know anything about gardening and am interested in learning, any suggestions? Any urban homesteaders out there?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yep…. But that’s AFTER you pay for the canning equipment… The boiling pans, jars, lids, seals, pitters, coring devices, etc….. Then the next year, that’s not part of the cost….. But that first outlay is a doozie, unless you can find someone with lot of jars to give away!….

The first year or two it might be good for you to just learn to grow things…. And only grow what you will eat in the harvest season… Tomatoes, cukes, beans, lettuce, etc… And not worry about canning for the winter…. Lots of things can be frozen, too, ya know…. Learn all you can from the Extension Office literature on both ways to keep your foods…..

Then, when you’re feeling competent in growing things and know you have good soil and great sunlight and are used to the work that’s involved, THEN get into things like corn, fruits and berrys…. That you will put up for later… You’ll have better success once you’re more sure of your abilities…..and you won’t make dumb mistakes like I did…. Planted nine zuchinni plants!!…. DUH!!!!…. LOL!!!>…

Laura asks…

If you had to, could you survive by growing your own food?

I’ve decided to take gardening lessons, although my
green thumb is pretty decent. I want to be less
dependent on others for my food. Could you survive
without a delivery truck, or a supermarket?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think that I would be able to survive by growing my own food, if I could do it properly. My meal(s) would consist only of fruits and vegetables, but that would be okay. I’d be a whole lot more healthier anyway.

William asks…

Do you plan on raising/growing your own food when you grow up?

You know, vegetable garden, chickens, goats, cows, and if you eat meat, pigs and rabbits?

I seem to be the only person I know who wants to do this. Would you want to? I think it would be fun.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Nahhh.
If thats what you like then, thats cool:)
