Ken asks…

How do i grow my own herb garden in my apartment?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Plant the baby herbs in 10 inch terra cotta pots with saucers. Use Miracle Grow Organic Choice potting soil. Fill the pots to about an inch from the top. Make a hole big enough for the plant. Pour water in the hole. Be gentle when you plant the babies and don’t do it in direct sunlight. Pack the dirt around it lightly. Pour in a little bit more water. Keep them out of direct sunlight for a day, then put them on your balcony in the sun or you can keep them in a sunny window. Water them frequently. Pinch the tops off a lot and they will grow a lot more. Don’t let them go to seed. When you see blooms, pinch them off or the plant will stop producing. Feed them with Miracle Grow about once a month at least.

Jenny asks…

comprehensive book on growing medicinal herbs?

Does any one know of a gOOd book on this? One that covers many different types of herbs, how to gorw from seed, how to cultivate/harvest, and so on? You know a book that shows more than just pictures! One that well worth the money even if it is 40-50 bucks…

I keep reading about several different books online, but since I cant see in them and my local bookstore doesnt have them, I’m afraid to buy without asking for your opinion… thanks.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The Medicinal Garden-How To Grow And Use Your Own Medicinal Herbs by Anne McIntyre is a comprehensive book about medicinal herbs, what to grow, how to grow them and what herbs are best used for what ailments. The book itself is broken into several parts and is filled with lots of colorful pictures as well as instructions on how to use the herbs.

Steven asks…

Can I grow my own herbs inside in Houston, and how would I do so?

What would I need? And can I make essential oils by myself? What kind of herbs would I grow that I’d actually use, not only for cooking but for home remedies and making shampoos and soaps and all, or would I even need them?
Thank you(:

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes, herbs can successfully be grown indoors. But they need a lot of daylight though, so you might try it in a kitchen window.

Start out with herbs you will actually use for cooking. You can always buy or borrow a book from the library on herbal home remedies to see what other uses you can find for them.

Sandra asks…

Do you like gardening? What are your favorite things to plant? What was the first plant you ever grew?

Planting gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, like I’m helping one of God’s creatures along the path of life. Do you have a green thumb? I love gardening, don’t you? Can you give me some plant tips?
Oooooh, crocuses are pretty, I like tulips, too! heard they were easy to grow, True?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My first memories are of grandmother working next door in her garden. She would literally cultivate rows of flowers…..from seeds, bulbs, anything that she could cut. I got to help her as all grandchildren did. When I ws nine, she told me I was old enough to cut the flowers for church……I was thrilled….then when I ws 11, I started getting to cut and arrange. My favorite things about gardening is to propagate plants…….anything I can get my hands on from seeds, soft cuttings, hardwood cuttings, etc.

Lisa asks…

Do they have gardening clubs just about everywhere to join?

and what exactly does one do once joined? does everyone go as a group to one anothers house for fun and work of helping each other w/their gardening or what?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Garden clubs vary greatly. You need to ask what YOU want from a club and find one that fits. Many are geared towards the social aspect with education such as flower arrangement, gardening and some social project. Many help with a garden in a school, nursing home and the like. Many also hold flower shows.

Garden clubs may run from mostly social to those really dedicated to public service. I’ve never heard of one going to each others’ home and helping with the garden, LOL! Cool idea.

Plant societies gear their activity towards a certain plant, say rose society or daylily society. Their’s is education based, they may have a public garden and usually have a flower competition.

Then there is the Master Gardener programs. These are for experienced gardeners who receive around 40 classroom hours in education and return those hours in public service thru the Extension Service.

If you are in or near a big town, look in the phone book. Sometimes a group of garden clubs may purchase a building to hold their meetings. Ask at local nurseries and garden centers. Call the Extension Service, they often keep track of local garden clubs or have a name of someone to contact.

If the garden club is having a flower show, they will list it under the happenings section of the paper. Also the State Fair may have state wide flower competition. That would be a good way to learn about clubs throught out the state.

I live in Ft Worth I see cactus of all types but usually away from house. I would do mthe corner so it will get some sunlight a way out from wall. I found that Cannas doing well here most anyplace I put them. Just need water hot evenings and actually will come back again after winter and you can thin and start new spot. OURs got 6 ft tall with miracle grow, which we use for everything. Soak a little with roots then add to water for planting then about every 2 weeks , easy instructions on bag. Worth the cost. Nancy asks…

Gardening Help! ~ Looking for perennials for Zones 8a ~ 8b.?

I soooo do not have a green thumb! I don’t even have a yellow thumb…

However, I do have a spot in the front of my house that is absolutely screaming for some flowers and I’m determined that Gardening is going to be on my list of 2008 resolutions…

So, what I need…
I am looking for good cutting flowers; Iris, Daffodil, Tulip or the like for a space that gets ALOT of direct sunlight. Drainage is fair but can be improved. I would prefer, to begin with, not to have to deal with bulbs that have to be dug-up every year.

I have asked around at several of the local gardening centers and haven’t really found anyone who could adequately answer my questions.

I live right on the edge of Zones 8a & 8b, or more to the point, on the very eastern edge of Williamson County, TX. About 20 miles northeast of Austin.

Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

The answer to your Q is too large for this site. In your zone almost anything will grow. The World is your oyster. Get a good book like I did, there are dozens

Mark asks…

What is India’s gardening Zone number?

GardenersCardiff answers:
