Donna asks…

Why are zones not showing up on irrigation timer?

While reseting my irrigation timer after the power went out I noticed that two of my zones no longer show up on the timer so that I can set them. I checked the wiring at both the timer and the valve and both seem fine. What else might it be?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It ate them? My computer does that>eats entire random files.

Maybe try powering it down completely? To reset it. Sometimes you can get stuff on the computer to reappear if you power down/maybe have to do it over and over again until it happens. If it is wired to the wall you might have to throw your circuit breaker to cut power.

And or you can ask at a lawn forum maybe:

http://www.lawncafe.com/forumindex.php

http://www.allaboutlawns.com/forum/index.php

this next place is for pros but there is a civilian help forum at the bottom of the page
http://www.lawnsite.com/

if you like forums, you can find them on anything (like seed swaps!). Some large, some small, some non-commercial and some local (which is nice if u like to talk climate specifics). Just add the word forum to ur searches.

I don’t have a lot of confidence in this next forum but they ARE a huge garden forum with an electrical appliance sub-forum:
http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/appl/

and a nice general gardening forum

John asks…

I want to plan a cottage garden in southern Alberta. Any ideas for plants that will survive the harsh temps?

I have a huge back yard that has direct sunlight (not a lot of shade) all day during the summer. I would prefer perenials. A tonne of large plants would be nice. Could you provide names of plants and I will run to the local gardening store and buy them. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Check out this website. The first thing you need to do is to identify your gardening ‘zone’. Then you can find plants that will thrive in your environment.

Linda asks…

Do all zones operate at the same time or one after another?

Bought a house that has a 6 zone sprinkler system. When the timer starts, zone 1 is the only one that comes on. All zones are working, as I can manually water with the controller and all operate. Do all zones water at once, or one after another?

GardenersCardiff answers:

To answer your question directly, no, they don’t run all at the same time. Depending on how you set up your programs the zones run in numerical order. Below is the typical controller.

The controller should have three (typically) programs, A, B & C.

On program A, you set a start time, say, 4:30 AM. Then you decide which zones should come on. I have four zones at my house. My controller has 9 zone capability. On program A, at 4:30 Am zone ONE comes on for 45 minutes. Then zone TWO runs for another 45 minutes. They don’t come on at the same time. Zones 1 & 2 water the grass twice a week, Mondays and Fridays.

Program B starts at 10:00 AM. Zones 3 & 4 water the gardens (Front and Back). Each zone runs for 30 minutes, running drip irrigation every other day.

Program C is not used. All zones I don’t want running during a program cycle are set to run for ZERO minutes. So they never come on.

Hope this helps.

‘av’a g’day mate.
