food – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-945/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-945/#respond Tue, 14 Oct 2014 20:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-945/

George asks…

Should we be learning to grow more of our own food closer to home?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Much of the food we eat is imported and it would be good to grow a little more at home.

But look at that imported food. Many countries cannot grow enough of a variety of food to feed themselves but can grow one main crop well which they sell and use the money to buy the food they need to live!!

Stop buying from them and they starve and the world has to spend huge sums in humanitarian aid!!

The reason we are all so much healthier and live longer is because of the availability of good food.

So lets save the world!!!

Betty asks…

How many people grow their own food and can the food?

I am just wondering to see if the old ways are coming back more.

GardenersCardiff answers:

We grow, can, freeze or dehydrate most of the food we eat.I don’t know about coming back as I have done it all my life.I hope more young people are getting into gardening.

David asks…

Growing foods?

What foods/ drinks make u grow the most? and does milk make u grow?

GardenersCardiff answers:

MILK! Yes, the milk we buy at the stores today make kids grow fast, it also makes them grow up fast, hence our little girls are hitting puberty before they are 12!
Same with the store bought meats and eggs. It is full of the same growth whore-moans. Yes, I mean to spell that, that way. But, yet, our government finds it un-healthy to sell un-processed milk to the public, or even your friends. You need to have your own cow in the back yard to be able to drink good milk, that is good for you.
The best food to help children grow on is HOME GROWN FOOD, from your garden or neighbors and friends. Second to that would be from the farmer’s market. Yes, it is probably GM ed and ‘enhanced’, but it is far better that what I’ve seen in the grocery stores. Same goes with meat. The best meat come from the animals you know what they ate, how they were kept and how they died. Do you really think those eggs you buy at the grocery store came from happy chickens, like pictured on the carton? Happy chicken product eggs that are 10 times healthier and more nutritious than store bought. Find yourself a hunter and a farmer and a gardener and there you will find the best foods to feed your kids. Good Luck.
Now, lets talk about fresh air and sunshine and working for your food instead of working for money to buy your food. OK, I will wait on that………

Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-911/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-911/#respond Tue, 09 Sep 2014 14:05:03 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-911/

Sandra asks…

Does a mushroom grow its own food?

Does the fern that grown on a cactus reproduce?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Mushrooms are categorize in fungi and by no means produce their own food. They are exclusively hetrotrophs.
So long as ferns are concerned they reproduce by forming spores. But if you think the ferns are reproducing with cactus ,the answer is not for sure.

George asks…

why should we grow our own food?

why should we grow our own food?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Because there may come a day when you have no choice but to grow some of your own food and I would hate to wait until that day to start learning, kind of like waiting till the power is out to run for flashlight batteries. Have you ever been to the store and observed how people act when a storm is coming? Its never a good idea to be completely dependent upon any one system. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for our ancestors growing there own food and its foolish to think that we shouldn’t carry on some of these traditions that got us where we are now.

Robert asks…

Why dont people grow their own food?

The lawn.. the lawn along with the suburb is an absolute ecological disaster.

I think that if people took the extra time and effort to grow their own food the world would be a lot more peaceful and happier.

Gardening is hard work which would require the American fatass to work and work hard for his food – people would get more exercise and eat healthier.

My last point is it would greatly improve the biodiversity of this planet – there used to be 1000s of different kinds of potatoes now there are only 4. so how about instead of living in the middle of grass we live in the middle of a forest with many different bugs and butterflys that live with the plants to ensure sustainability.

oh yea and whats all this stuff about making growing your own food illegal? can they do that? or will civil disobediance result in a few well needed public hangings?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Ok…your assuming everyone has a yard with soil adaquate for growing food.

Where are all the people who live in appartments supposed to do their gardening?

What are people with poor soil supposed to do?

Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-389/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-389/#respond Mon, 25 Mar 2013 12:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-389/

Ken asks…

Does growing and hunting your own food really save money on your grocery bill?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Growing food absolutely saves money if you know how to do it. It usually takes a couple growing seasons to get to that point, but once you master the skill it is very well worth it. You have to invest a lot of time, and if you calculated how much you got paid for that time it would be a low wage. But gardeners love working in the garden. At the height of the growing season in July, I pull twenty five pounds of vegetables a week out of my garden. The only investments are tools, free horse manure, and $30 worth of seeds. But I’m out there twenty hours a week, nine months a year, rain or shine.

A hunter can get 50 pounds of meat with a $25 yearly license and a $150 gun that will last more than a lifetime. That pays for the gear the first year. It is a huge part of the way many rural families get by. It is also a way for rich people to go on expensive vacations with fancy gear.

Paul asks…

Are you able to grow your own food and clothe yourself or do you need money to buy it from the store.?

How much do you think your myspace page and texting skills will be worth when this thing collapses on us.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Unless one has a farm there is no way possible to grow everything they eat. Nor spin wool to clothe themselves. We need JOBS. For too long companies have been given tax breaks for moving OUR jobs overseas. I agree 100% with Obama that this must end. Give the companies who stay here the breaks not those who outsource.

Helen asks…

Should the need arise do you know how to grow your own food, find water, protect what’s yours&live off the land?

Are you entirely dependent on the comforts that we all take for granted?

Do you know how to survive without electricity, tv, playstation, SUVs and refrigeration?

GardenersCardiff answers:

No, they do not. We were without electricity for 4 days this summer and my children and grandchildren thought the end of the world had come. We used a kerosene lamp and candles for light at night. I missed the refrigerator the most I guess. The kids were bored, nothing to do. It reminded me of my grandmother. She had a wood cook stove, no refrigeration, no indoor bathroom and I loved spending summers with her. I have gotten more used to the comforts we have now and would not like to go without them but I know I can if I have to.
