container garden…what’s best?
I have a small patio area and would like to start a container garden. what is the best plant to plant that will provide me color and look really nice. I’m thinking impatients….I think there is more out there. I live in zone 6. Where is a good place to buy large pot inexpensievly…other than big lots

Fine gardening magazine may be a good place for you to start. They put out a special edition each year about container gardening and a fool proof method of designing fantastic planters that will WOW your neighbors.
As far as large pots go, search your local garden centers. Stores in my area are trying to get rid of last years containers and have some for 1/2 off or better.
Try thinking outside the box or container and look for things that could be used for containers, but are not typically thought of as a container i.e. A bushel basket, an old wooden wheel barrow, a cart on wheels and old child’s wagon. Once you get a feel for what you want you could hit the yard sales and pick up some neat stuff for cheap.

Is Better Homos and Gardens a good magazine to subscribe to?
I’ve been considering learning about gardening lately. My yard is beginning to look really bad since my sorry husband has stopped taking care of it like he used to. As a matter of fact he took the wrong medicine the other day and fell into one of our bushes. Now the poor bush is all ruined!! Plus the dogs in the neighborhood always come over and poo in the grass. I guess they are attracted to old man pee.
So would that be a good magazine to start reading and learning from or is there a better one for gardening? Thanks and blesses!!

Can Anyone Give Me Info On How To Pick Out A Decent Electric Weed Eater/ Edger @ A Good Price?
We live in base housing and really need to fix up our yard, however, my husband and I are both landscaping/garden virgins. I don’t know what makes a more expensive electric weed eater/edger better than a cheap one or the best place to buy one at a good price.
Also, we have already failed our yard inspection 3 times which is HORRIBLE so any tips or advice on how to keep a yard maintained well or even decorating/gardening tips would be great! Thanks!

If you’re the wife, and will be stuck doing the weed-eatting (Like Me:) My best advice is to go to the store and find one that feels comfortable to you. Don’t get one that is too heavy or awkward feeling for you. I have a Homelite, and it’s really light weight, but does a great job…and was inexpensive. I like to mow before I do the trimming, that way you don’t miss anything and have to go back over it. Whatever model you get, read the manual, and get familiar with re-stringing the line on the cutting head~I think they are all a pain in the butt when it comes to that…I never have used one that you can just “tap” and the line comes out smoothly, like it’s suppose to~lol
It’s not hard to “spruce-up” your yard and make it look nice. Just keeping it mowed and trimmed is a major improvement~but you can also plant some nice annuals in pots, if there aren’t any flower beds available, and that will make it look even better! Just grab you a few pots, potting soil, and head to a garden center~then all that’s left is the watering;)

Zinnias and marigolds are very easy to grow. They are almost easy enough to plant, water and forget. (But keep them watered.)

I would like to plant hydrangeas and peonies. And maybe some zinnias. Im not sure if I can plant these all together or if they will even thrive in my environment. Can someone please give me some tips about if i can plant these flowers, what season to plant, and how big my garden should be to plant all these. If you could give me as much info as possible, even just general flower gardening tips! PLEASE!

Peonies have to grow in colder climates. They have to go through a frost dormancy period. They are perennials, which means they come up each year as new growth. Zinnias are annuals, meaning you plant them each spring.
The fool proof method of getting plants for your garden is taking a trip to a local nursery. They will only carry plants etc that will grow successfully in your climate.
It’s really not that hard at all. Soil is most important. I’ve found that you don’t have to get all fancy having your soil tested for pH. I’d only do that if I had a plant that was extremely picky or if the soil was somehow contaminated. Just make sure your soil is not hardpan or only sand. You want soil that is a nice mix of sand and organic matter and some clay.
Just read the tags that are in the pot at the nursery. They will tell you how much sun and watering it will need etc.
Don’t let everybody make it all complicated for you with soil etc. If weed will grow there, so will plants. Just make sure the soil will hold water, but not bog it down. In other words, don’t use sand because it wont stay moist, and don’t use solid clay because it wont drain.
