Maria asks…

Do Christian families need help in homeschooling their children?

One day while Father was away at work, a knock came at the door of the family’s home. Mother opened the door and found a stern man with sharp teeth and a very pointy nose standing on the doorstep.

“May I help you?” Mother asked.
“I am here,” snarled the man, “to inspect your home and your children.”
Mother was surprised. “Whatever for?” she asked.

“It has been reported,” snapped Mr. Pointy Nose, “that you do not institutionalize your children, as is the norm. It has been reported that you spend an abnormal amount of time with your children, and you have been seen laughing with them, and they with you. It has been reported that your teen child is not embarrassed to be seen with you and that she smiles while working in your garden and hanging laundry. I will have to inspect your house and ask you some questions.”

Mother invited Mr. Pointy Nose in and offered him a cup of tea. Mr. Pointy Nose pulled a great pile of papers from his briefcase and began asking important questions: “How many television sets do you own, how often do you dine out, why do you have so many books, what do you have against institutions, why do you grow your own food, do your children know who Madonna is, how about Beavis and Butthead?”

GardenersCardiff answers:

So Mother answered all Mr. Pointy Nose’s questions to his satisfaction, and he left.

And they grew up to be annoying Fundies who hung out on R&S and perplexed atheists.

Betty asks…

Hi, fellow Senior Citizens today I was wondering if there are any….?

gardeners amongst us?

Do any of you cultivate your own fruit and veg,or grow flowers ?

Hubby and I have a wonderful flower garden and are now quite proficient in growing Floribunda and Tea roses.
Considering we live on the coast we are delighted with the results this year.

How about you, any green fingers amongst us?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My garden is a bit unusual, but thriving. Turnips, parsnips, cucumbers, squash, peas, brockley, brussel sprouts, cabbage, water melons, cantaloupe, musk melons, crenshaw melons, potatoes, lettuce, chard, corn, sun chokes, seedless grapes, and the trees are loaded with apricots, plumbs, and cherries. It’s like a jungle out there. It’s my retreat.

Joseph asks…

Why cant marijuana be legalized if………………….?

Alcohol and cigarettes and so many legal drugs are legal if they kill far more than marijuana? People say that since they cant tax it because then people would just grow their own? What about alcohol? People could easily make their alcohol and beer and liquor (moonshining) and theres no problem keeping alcohol legal. People could easily grow their own tobacco but they dont have a problem keeping that legal and people will still buy it taxed. People could grow their own fruits and vegetables, why not make that illegal? Theres other legal drugs like datura and saliva which can easily get a person intoxicated and crazy, yet thats perfectly legal! You can make your own ginger for tea and feel better, why not make that illegal? Whats this whole fascination with marijuana and trying to keep it illegal? Wanting to keeping illegal is almost like supporting the dangerous drug dealers and drug cartels and the black market of drugs. What do you think will happen to that black market if those drugs were legalized?
How can anyone support freedom and liberty and also support the law on drugs when law abiding citezens should have the choice of them especially if they are responsible with it?
Whats the big deal and whats the problem why marijuana cant be legalized? What about peoples rights?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi. Your right. It is Double Standard. Many do not want to legalize it I think due to fear that those who use it would just do it all day and not work and be responsible in other areas of their life. It’s the same with alcohol though people abuse it and it’s legal. I think we each are accountable for our own actions. Peace

Joseph asks…

Do you grow your own fruit and veg, or even just some herbs?

pennywise I have a spare bar of soap handy, to wash your mouth out with, what a horrible suggestion, no I’m not a rozzer.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Tried a few bits last year. Think I might be the wrong disposition though , every time so much a a bird or indeed one of my kids went near I would run at them with my washing line prop.

Trying beans this year…..we shall see. Don’t know if my nerves can stand it.

Helen asks…

Paul asks…

What are the tax consequences of growing your own food?

If I grow food for my own personal consumption, do I owe federal income tax on that food? I would apreciate answers from those knowledgeable of the U.S. tax code.

GardenersCardiff answers:

As long as you do not sell it, it is tax free. The only way income tax plays a part of the equation is if you sell your produce, and gross more than $10,000. Food grown for personal consumption has always been tax free.

Lizzie asks…

How many of you will growing your own food to help keep your food costs down?

Or increasing your garden size. I sure am.
Because food prices have increased 24% in the past year and will continue to increase.
I don’t think a 24% increase is small but hey, your opinion.
I have 3 fruit trees too!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow a vegetable garden as a hobby not because of the small increases in food costs. Same reason I have fruit trees planted.

It’s just me, my wife and 3 cats to feed and I have yet to see anything close to a 24% increase in food costs.

The grain being used to make ethanol isn’t grain thats grown for human consumption, this still is used as feed grain for livestock and there’s more than enough to feed all livestock and still make fuel.

Mandy asks…

What are the advantages of growing your own food?

What are the advantges of growing fruit and veg in your garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Great question!

Here are my ideas:

1. Freshness and taste. This is the best reason to grow your vegetables and fruits. Have you ever tasted corn on the cob that was picked within an hour of harvesting? You won’t soon forget that experience, trust me.

2. No insecticides if you do organic gardening. Why not grow organically? There are ways to make it even easier than using those UGLY pesticide poisons. Try sheet composting, for example. Buy some hay bales and cover your garden with it at the end of the growing season. At the beginning of the next season the ground under the cover will be fresh and loamy. Keep the mulch on the garden year round and avoid weeding your fingers bloody.

3. Exercise. Gardening is a great way to get your much needed exercise. There are thousands of gardeners who are well into their 80’s and still growing great gardens. Perhaps this gives us a clue why we should too?

4. Price is not the issue. In fact, it is questionable if you can save money growing your own food. You will prbably come out even on a pure price comparison with your local grocer. But so what? The other reasons bury the price argument.

5. It is a lot of fun. We need more fun in our lives.
