fruit and vegetables – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-461/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-461/#respond Wed, 05 Jun 2013 12:05:05 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-461/

Sandra asks…

Do you grow your own fruit or vegetables?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My six year old daughter wanted a garden 2 yrs ago and we planted corn, green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, garlic, water melons, green onions, cucumbers, and banana peppers. The deer around here ate all the corn and the rabbits had a field day in the garden too, we have moved across the street since then and all we have planted so far is flowers, but the veggies and fruits are not far off, possibly this spring.

Mandy asks…

Should everyone start growing their own fruit and vegetables?

If enough people did this, prices would come down and governments and greedy bankers would realise they don’t have such a hold on us. At the moment too many people are reliant on buying food from supermarkets-who’s prices are fixed by the city and walk street. Growing your own produce, all or just some of it. This can be grown in your garden, in an allotment if you have one, a roof garden. Even if you live in a flat this can be done inside and in window boxes. We the people need to start influencing politicians and bankers with our actions as they are meant to be our loyal servants, not the other way round.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Great question, yes everybody should as its better for you and tastes better. The supermarkets stuff is garbage, i get the kids involved growing healthy little gem lettuce and potatoes, they actually get excited at cropping time.
Everybody should do this and there should be more allotments available to the ordinary joe public.

Great question and happy growing to all posters

Linda asks…

Ii it better to buy vegetable seeds in a packet, than to harvest seeds from your own vegetables for later use?

I grew some okra from seed I took from last years crop. They are very stunted.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t think that it’s a “racket” by the seed companies to get you to buy seed in packets. It’s the knowledgeable advancement that botanists use in plant genetics that makes you have to by hybridized seed. Seed in the F2 generation, will not grow true to form. In other words, it will not be just like the plant that it came from and will most likely take the growing and production habits from one of the parent plants, which in the long run may have an undesirable trait. In order to get a healthy maximum producing plant, you will need to buy seed in packets which have been bred for maximum yield and perfect plant growth. Hope this answers your question.

Joseph asks…

Do you have your own fruit/vegetable garden?

What sort of things do you grow? Why did you decide to grow your own fruit/vegetables? Do your kids help and does it help them want to try a variety of foods?

GardenersCardiff answers:

We’re going to try again this year, and this year I think we’ll be using mostly pots. The fireants and the soil here is just too hard to deal with. I plan on tomatoes, some pumpkins, sweet-peas, squash, some carrots. Because I grew up with a veggie garden and loved it as a child, and it’s sort of a nudged thing in my religion in order to be more self-reliant. My kids will help, and in the past every time I’ve done this every child I’ve had help (from my own to nieces/nephews) ALWAYS ate more veggies because they helped grow them.

Sandra asks…

Do you grow your own fruits and vegetables?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t but my mum likes gardening. We’ve got a vegetable patch in the garden with all sorts of vegetables, including: tomatoes, potatoes, spinach…. We’ve also got mint leaves growing as well. And we’ve got an apple tree, cherry tree and pear tree. And we’ve got some strawberries and blueberries growing too. But we also buy fruit and vegetables from the shops as well.

Carol asks…

do you grow your own fruit and vegetables?

GardenersCardiff answers:

No…

John asks…

Is it a sin in America to grow & consume your own vegetables , will you go to hell for doing so ?

H.R. 875

http://www.campaignforliberty.com/blog.php?view=12671

Is it a sin yet ?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It is not a sin, just government trying to reign in the populus and have us more firmly under their thumb. Government doesn’t want free thinkers, just dumb followers. It is scary what Gov’t is doing and not telling.

Betty asks…

What type of incentive would persuade you to grow your own fruits and vegetables?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Having the space for a garden, a free supply of seeds, a shorter work week, and a tax write off.

That’s all I would need. Oh, and maybe someone to come over and weed the garden for free, but that’s not a deal breaker just a bonus.

Susan asks…

How much better is it really to grow your own fruit and vegetables, particularly organically?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Organic gardening is the best! You should try it. Be prepared for a big harvest and you will have to can, freeze, or give away a lot of stuff cuz it all comes at once.

Lizzie asks…

Have you donated your unmentionables to this year’s summer Grow Your Own campaign at Hampton Court Palace?

Visitors at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show were asked by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to donate their unwanted underwear for its summer Grow Your Own campaign at Hampton Court Palace.
The clean unwanted bras, briefs and boxer shorts donated would be used in display of how to grow your own fruit and vegetables in unwanted underwear.
The donated underwear will now be used, alongside stock contributed by Marks and Spencer, in a ‘good life’ display at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, from 7-12 July.
Georgie Webb, of the RHS, said that old undies could be used like hanging baskets where people have little space.
“Due to their conical shape, bras are ideal containers for turning into hanging baskets, and if you sew two together, you have what is best described as a ‘hanging bra-sket’,” the Telegraph quoted Webb as saying.
“Once filled with compost you can grow salad leaves, herbs, alpine strawberries and even tumbling cherry tomatoes in them; the bigger the bra the more you can grow.
“But the serious message behind the ‘bra-skets’ is that you do not need a lot of space or even a lot of money to start growing your own food – just a bit of imagination,” Webb added.
The ‘good life’ display is part of a wider campaign by the RHS to encourage more people to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and civic organisation, including the National Trust, have also called for more people to grow their own food in order to improve healthy eating and tackle climate change by reducing food miles

GardenersCardiff answers:

Just how big is Georgie Webb’s bra? Hanging basket size? Good Lord, whatever next!

James asks…

Witches or pagans who use herbs in their spell work?

Do you grow your own or do you buy already prepared or dryed herbs for your spells and rituals? I grow some like sage and then buy some as well. If you buy them how do you make sure they are as pure as possible? There is a health food store near by that has bulk dried herbs that I use but sometimes I wonder about quality.

This year I am going to try to grow as much of what I use as possible.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Ms Crone, not only do you have to worry about the purity but also the manner in which the herbs were “harvested”, planted, and grown. I prefer to use only herbs which I can locate, and harvest myself. That way I know that the plants were well cared for and that they were harvested with respect and in a manner that ensures their sustained continuance in the spot where they were growing. I can also leave a small gift to that which remains behind as appreciation for the plant’s sacrifice of itself for my purposes.

Add to this the added energies of the practitioner by doing all of this work yourself and it only adds to the likelihood of success in your endeavors. For those herbs which one can ONLY get through commercial sources, I have found it beneficial to use them but actually grow them in ones “Spirit Garden” using techniques of visualization to prepare the soil, plant the seeds, care for the plant to maturity and properly harvest it in accordance with how you would do so if you could grow the plant yourself. One should even offer a gift to the Earth upon acquiring the herb, just as though you had gone out and harvested it yourself. Additionally, with commercially obtained materials, I have found it necessary to purify them with symbols of the Elementals and consecrate them to the Gods. This removes any unwanted energies that may cling to the materials from those who have handled the stuff before it finally got into your hands.

I hope this gives you a bit more insight into this aspect of things.

Brightest Blessings,
Raji the Green Witch

Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-100/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-100/#respond Sat, 09 Jun 2012 12:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-100/

Laura asks…

Do you think growing your own vegetables is better than buying at a Farmer’s Market? Why?

why?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try growing in your own garden and then maybe supplementing with stuff from a Farmer’s market. Buying at a Farmer’s Market where local growers sell is good because it’s better than buying at the store and you can ask the people how they grew it, what chemicals they used, etc.

Ken asks…

Are you growing your own fruit and vegetables to beat the high shop prices now?

Lettuce is so expensive now!
Nelly: There are lots of good books on the subject. Reader’s Digest being one of the best!

GardenersCardiff answers:

No I haven’t grown anything to beat the high shop prices now. I have been growing for years for control on how much ripening my produce gets. For taste by choosing my favourite sort. For the fun and exercise and fresh air. For the Flavour most of all. Basically for my pleasure. The cost has not been a factor and I have planted for many years. It is an added bonus not to pay the hideous prices for such poor quality produce sometimes, but my biggest reason is a love of growing things. And how handy to be creating some dish and realise you need a bay leaf, some oregano and a tomato and a capsicum. Just wander down and select which one you want and how much you want. I recommend this hobby to you if you are three years old or 93. It is fun.

Nancy asks…

If you were fined $5000 for growing your “own” vegetables, on your “own” land,…would you pay?

No,..you read the question correctly.

‘A Georgia resident who has been an organic farmer for years is now facing $5000 dollars in fines for growing too many vegetables on his OWN land. That’s right. Steve Miller, who has sold some of his produce at local farmers markets, as well as growing food for himself, is likely the victim of an Online Aerial Invasion of Property.’
http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/us-farmer-fined-5k-for-growing-too-many-vegetables/story-e6frfku0-1225921745275
Recent reports of Local & State Officials and Bureaucrats using online mapping software have now become mainstream tools for assessing fines and generating money for cash strapped local & state budgets. Does it seem right that anywhere that Google Maps & Bing Maps can go is legal to use as a source of information. If a person was bathing in their pool, with every expectation of privacy, and someone peeked over a fence, wouldn’t that constitute a criminal offense?

Is government today at a point where the end justifies the means? In January and February, when he received his first citations, Steve was able to get the property re-zoned allowing him to grow his garden – a right MOST AMERICANS believe he already had. The Declaration of Independence states one’s inalienable right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Isn’t growing your own personal food supply an exercise of that right to Life and Liberty? No Constitutional Government can assess any fee for exercising these inalienable rights.

Are people going to let this FASCIST TAKEOVER to continue – even growing a garden in the privacy of our own personal property be taken away? If the answer is NO – then what are you prepared to do about it?

That’s right,…

WHAT ARE YOU PREPARED TO DO ABOUT IT????

ALL THOUGHTS WELCOME,..AS USUAL.

🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

The government is trying to stop organic farming period.
