Nancy asks…

What attracts birds and other wildlife to my garden?

I love birdwatching and there are so many different varities in my garden that I felt that I had to ask this question. I keep my gardens in the best condition I can for someone my age and my wife called me over to the window earlier and I saw Robins, Blackbirds, Starlings, Sparrows and there was even a little fox out too. What is it that attacts all this wildlife to my garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I assume you have a mature landscape where birds feel safe visiting or hanging out. The number 1 reason birds come and stay is that there feel safe. Plus if you provide food from either your plants or in a feeder you have created a magnet. Water is very important and running water is the best of all. Ruth asks…

Is there a garden atop one of the major buildings in Philadelphia, possibly the free library?

Hi, I have heard a rumor that there is a garden area atop one of the major buildings in Philadelphia. I think it may be the Free Library of Philadelphia, but can not find any evidence. I hear it can be used for weddings or other various events? Does anyone know if such a place exists?

GardenersCardiff answers:

The Free Library of Philadelphia has something called a “Green Roof”. It isn’t a garden in the traditional sense, but it is organic covering for the roof that is more energy efficient. The green roof is viewable by the public (it’s a demonstration pilot) but I’m not sure if it’s available for events. You’d have to contact the Free Library for that.

Hope this helps.

Donald asks…

What can i plant in my garden right now?

i live in N.E. Texas, and my green thumb is always turning brown. I just made a nice little garden & was woundering if i can plant anything now or if i should wait til spring. I kinda need something that is easy to neglect (lol).

GardenersCardiff answers:

Bulbs are best planted in the Fall; and they are fairly easy to grow and very low maintenance. They’re perennials so they come back every year.

Sandy asks…

what is the cheapest and easiest way to get rid of garden waste?

my husband is wanting to removed 2 large conifers (12 ft ish) 1 small conifer and i medium sized fir tree, as well as alot of turf. I wasn’t sure as all the waste is recyclable garden waste what the easiest and cheapest method of disposal would be. Obviously skip hire is an option, but no subsidy seems to be made because the waste is 100% recyclable. thank you

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most tree removal services have a trailer with a huge chipper. They cut the tree down, feed the branches and trunk in, and make mulch on site.
This is perfect for your lawn or garden area. Have the service dump it on your site, then rake it over your area and work in in with a shovel or tiller.

When my neighbor had 6 storm damaged trees taken down, I asked them to dump the mulch in my front yard. He got a discount because they didn’t have to drive 30 miles and pay to dump the organic waste, and I got 10 to 12 yards (a $400 value) of mulch for free.

Even if you don’t plant anything right away keep the mulch that’s been created. It will save you from having to buy more, and by the time you need it it will be composted just right. Don’t throw this gold mine away.

Carol asks…

Has anyone seen this coffee table from the Febreze Flameless Luminary print ad?

http://i1040.photobucket.com/albums/b406/scheherazade_stories/CoffeTable.jpg

It’s the one the luminary is sitting on made up of all those logs, but I can’t for the life of me find it. I saw it in an autumn edition of Better Homes and Gardens. Looks easy enough to make with the proper tools however I am not a lumberjack. Anyone have any suggestions?

GardenersCardiff answers:

According to this article that table is hollow http://www.descendingashtray.com/archives/date/2008/04
This was made in 2008 probably difficult to find now.
