Charles asks…

Is it very wrong to collect snails in my garden and throw them over the hedge into my neighbours neglected…

…garden?
The Drunken Fool,
You’re a cad, Sir! Throwing snails into a well-tended garden.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It’s the right and proper thing to do.If he kept his garden nice, then you wouldn’t do it. Although I would carry on, it’s much more fun!

Sharon asks…

In which countries are garden centres (and gardening) popular?

Which countries around the world have lots of gardening centres?
There are certainly plenty in my native England, because there are so many keen gardeners. Where else would I expect to see garden centres, and gardens that the householders look after?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well, I’m sure it is impossible to say since I’ve never been everywhere, but I’d assume that although quite a few countries may not have the “Garden Center”, they do have avid gardeners. Just to name a few, the places I’m certain you can expect to find household gardens are in:
Great Britain
United States
India
China
Japan
Australia
Spain
Mexico
Holland
Germany
Russia
Canada
There are just way too many to mention, but you get the point. Gardening and the love of Gardening is not unique to any country.

Lizzie asks…

What department stores have good GARDENING DEPARTMENTS?

You know how Wal-Mart and K-Mart both have pretty big gardening departments? Well I don’t have either of those stores near me. I’m in Los Angeles, but for some reason they aren’t as big or popular here.

What other stores have good gardening departments? I don’t think Target does, as far as I know. Any others?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Lot’s of hardware stores have a section in the back that has garden stuff. I love to just browse those stores myself.

David asks…

What is the best method for freezing green beans?

I grow my own vegetables and would like to freeze my romano beans. Last year, I followed blanching instructions carefully. After draining the water from them, I sealed them in a freezer bag using a food saver appliance. They were kept frozen for 3 months only. When I went to cook them for dinner, they tasted very rubbery and not at all like the “crunchy” store kind. Does anyone have suggestions as to what I did wrong or how they freeze theirs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try going to this website – it should have everything you need.

Jenny asks…

Can I grow vegetables in a greenhouse?

Please can someone answer me this question am I able to use a large plastic greenhouse to grow vegetables all year round as I would love to grow my own vegetables but only have concrete in my garden thanks.
Oh I do have space to bring the greenhouse indoors as I have a spare room that doesnt get used much and as it will be able to be moved so that will solve winter problems thank you for your help im new to gardening and just wanna start my own vegetables.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Sure you can but plastic green house cannot support snow fall in winter unless it was built with strong steel pipe. And you need to install hot air heater to keep temperature at least above 20C during winter no sun period. It costs a lot of electricity. Therefore, double layer plastic green house is preferable.

Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-178/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-178/#respond Sun, 26 Aug 2012 12:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-178/

Laura asks…

Is it rewarding and fun to grow your own vegetables in your back garden ?

for years now, I’ve had this fascination and desire to do gardening.

Its fun, its relaxing and therapeutic and rewarding.

Its november – what sort of Vegetables might I be able to grow now – thru into Dec,Jan and Feb ?

I’d love to give Potatoes, Carrots and even Onions a go.

no idea if any of them are in season or out of season for this period.

Do you need to do your homework first, to find out the ideal conditions to grow certain vegetables ?

what are the basics – the essential things you MUST do to get off to a safe start that will give me satisfactory results ?

the idea of growing my own potatoes and making chips sounds quite fun.

Or using the onions & carrots grown by myself, in cooking.

GardenersCardiff answers:

For the first couple of years,

you will spend quite a bit on your tools, pots of different sizes, bags of compost to make your soil good, Insecticide and fungicide spray along with other sprays which you will need, garden canes, cloches, water butts and hose pipe etc.

Its hard work in preparing everything and keeping it that way, but once done you will get great satisfaction when picking them fresh from your ground plus giving a few left overs to your neighbours.

It depends on how serious you want to make it and it can be more expensive than buying from the shops at times, but once you get the bug you wont be able to stop.

As for your information. You can get all this from your own P.C. Just type in…for eg… (growing cabbages) and it will give you all the info you need. ( Or preparing a vegetable garden.)

It will tell you how and when to grow all types of veg.

As for your seeds…Buy them off ebay, there are some good cheap sellers there. Don’t get paying high prices from shops or garden centres when you can buy them for 99p a pack.

You will soon learn what to do and what not to do.

Its not the growing you have to worry about, its all about getting the soil right. Just like I said at the beginning. Buying compost and adding all what you can to the soil to make it a good texture, as your veges wont grow very good just in soil alone.

Happy Gardening.

Donald asks…

What kind of Government would make it a crime to grow your own vegetables?

Look here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhPAHhwApA4&feature=player_embedded

Hello……?

All thoughts welcome.

GardenersCardiff answers:

A criminal enterprise headed by Monsanto . Even our food has been sold to the corporate masters ..

Lisa asks…

VEGETARIANS… If you had to grow your own vegetables would you still be a veggie?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Absolutely! They taste a lot better than shop bought veg, no chemicals or artifical colouring. It’s also very satisfying when you’ve grown them yourself. You don’t really need a garden either, a lot of veg can be grown in large pots.
