Maria asks…

What are good quotes to tell someone to get over it already?

Omg,so theres this guy that was going out with my bestfriend, but they broke up like 6 months already. He keeps saying sorry but what he did cant be forgiven. My friend says shes tired of it because he just wont stop calling/texting her.She also tried avoiding him.The worst part is that she is still doing what caused them to break up and keeps insisting.
I know it has nothing to do with it,but what could be good quotes or sayings to try to see if he finally understands?

GardenersCardiff answers:

“In life, events change us. They define us. They leave scars to remind us of that time in our lives. The scars will never go away, nor begin to fade. They’ll be there forever, whether we like them or not. And we’ll look at them everyday, and… Everyday they will remind us of our strength, of the power we have within ourself to maybe not be able to get over something- but be able to get through it.” – Emily R. “I gracefully stop to smell the roses along walking the garden path to getting over you” – Monique Lloyd

“I don’t think that’s something that you ever get past or get over, and I don’t think it’s something you should get past or get over. It’s something you learn to deal with, but I think it’s driven him to work on some things that he feels he needs to work on. And also make a push for staying that No. 2 and making a push for No. 1, whether it’s at the end of this year or next year or whether it’s somewhere else.” – Jon Jansen

Helen asks…

How could a predator (dinosaurs) world exist before the garden of Eden and before the fall of man?

Before man, there was T-Rex and Raptors and such. If God created dinosaurs, why did he make them vicious? How could there be a world of violence (dinosaurs hunting dinosaurs) before the harmony of the Garden of Eden? Surely, this isn’t the nature of God. Any thoughts?

GardenersCardiff answers:

The First Earth

There was a time of great creation. Solar systems were created planets and many other marvels not all at the same time but with many different ages. How this was done no one on this planet knows. Let me repete this “No one knows” including scientist. They can push any theory they wish in hopes to promote their we have the answers idea. But in truth the more they say the dumber they appear.
Any idea of accidental happenings is idiotic for there is great complication of design in all that exist. Therefore there has to be a great architech or designer beyond our capability or understanding.
If there is a designer there must be a place the designer calls home
I call this place heaven and the designer GOD .
How these things came to be I have no idea, but hope that somewhere in the future I will be blessed with that knowledge.
So somewhere in the past the earth was created long before the time of man. Of course before man was it even called earth I doubt it.
Was there any life here before man ? Yes the proof is in the ground.
The fuel we need today is the result of that life. Was that accidental or was that planned all along. Perhaps that was the design of many worlds progress in many steps. Were there any humanoid type creatures before man perhaps but not man. For man was created at the time of genesis when the first earth had been layed waste covered with darkness and water shrouded by a mist of darkness with no land for beast or visitors. This is the time I see as prior to the book of genesis or the re creation of a earth capable of being a home for mankind. Why did that happen I do not know but it would explain
The fossel findings or why occasionally pre historic sea creatures are discovered still alive for only they had a chance of surviving the fall of the first earth. After all modern man has found sea life thriving in places unthinkable before. These strange sea creatures are rare as though only few survivers not abundant as the sea creatures created during genesis.
This to me explains how every mountain on earth can have fossils of sea crustations for the earth could have remained in this state of darkness covered in water for a very long time unlike the short period when Noah was afloat.
So the first earth went through many changes one of being inhabited by very large land creatures and plants of which eventually none survived. The first earth went through periods of extreme heat and cold. And in it’s final days was cast into darkness covered with water and mist where only few sea creatures driven deep into the earth survived. The submersed land holding fossil remains to present many questions for the future inhabitants of the second earth.
The Second Earth
In the beginning GOD created the heaven and the earth. Now the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the spirit of GOD moved upon the face ot the waters.
The above is a direct quote from genesis. For me it reads in the beginning GOD created heaven and earth. So when was the beginning at least prior to now as in now the earth was without form. I believe there is a long time period between these two sentences. The first sentence refers to the first earth. The second sentence now the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep. Describes the condition of the the first earth at this point in time upon the replenishing creation of GOD upon the earth.
Also the second sentence of genesis does not describe creation from nothing but rather a damaged water covered dark world that exist already. GOD’s presents seems as the repair man of the universe. The next few passages describe repairing or returning earth to a beautiful life supporting world. The word replenish is used several times as in again not for the first time.

Betty asks…

Why would God put a tree with fruit that was forbidden in the garden of Eden?

I thought god wanted us to love him, why would he put the fruit there in the first place? Is god malevolent?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Malevolent means to be spiteful, and God is anything but!

God does want us to love Him, willingly. He gave us free will to make choices. As mankind’s creator, Jehovah God put the tree of knowledge in the garden. There were many other trees of the same type, he only asked that Adam and Eve not eat from that one tree. It was symbolic of his right to rule, and to choose what right and wrong. Since he made us, he is the one to know best what benefits us

What God was asking of them caused them no hardship, and more importantly did not rob them of their dignity. He merely asked them to display respect for Him out of love. When the first couple sinned, they were in effect following a headstrong course in opposition to God.

Example : A loving parent is preparing for a family meal and has made several plates of the same type of cookie. This parent now tells the children that they can eat from any of the plates except the one in the middle, since they are for the guests. This parent isn’t being cruel, and as a gesture out love, this parent even put the acceptable plates on the outside edges so they would be easier for the children to reach and make the middle plate less tempting. [The same way with God. Adam and Eve could have eat from the many trees surrounding the Tree of knowledge. They were all of the same type of fruit. They just allowed their curiousity and desires to overtake them.]

MOSS topiary frame~have YOU actually made one & how is the maintaining?

of these plant sculptures?
did you make the frame urself as well?
Or purchase it?
they look great and exciting for the garden 😉

GardenersCardiff answers:

Moss dries out very fast , & can’t take full sun well. Better to use small sedums & Hens and Chicks , unless it’s deep shade.. They’re drought-tolerant & much easier care .

Paul asks…

What is a good place in San Francisco to go to dine and dance after a private wedding?

My mom is 44 yrs old and is having a small private wedding in San Francisco. She wants to go eat and dance afterwards. Any suggestions as to where to go?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My husband and I got married in SF, same thing, small wedding and we went to a really elegant dinner at Acquarello which was delicious Italian food in an old church (perfect for wedding attire as it’s formal dress code). Http://www.acquerello.com/

Then we went dancing and had drinks at Top of the Mark, which someone already mentioned. Http://www.topofthemark.com/entertainment.html
That is a great, traditional “dancing” place for mature people. I don’t mean mature like gray hair and walkers, but not a night club. It’s classy jazz music you can dance to. We rented a limo to take us from place to place since there weren’t that many of us, and that made it really easy to get from one point to the other without having to worry about parking. It also gave us the ability to zip all over town to have our wedding pictures taken in front of the “Painted Ladies”, China beach, Japanese Tea Garden, Shakespeare Garden, etc.

I personally wouldn’t recommend going to Jazz at Pearls for seveal reasons. The first being that it’s an actual concert venue, which means no talking. I think that on the night of a wedding, it kind of brings the celebration to an abrupt halt to go sit and watch a jazz show. It’s better to go somewhere that has live jazz to have drinks where you can still socialize and celebrate. Secondly, something dreadful is going on at Pearl’s. I’m not sure if they are under new management or just going through some kind of issue but the last few times we were there, they were totally disorgnized and the staff was rude, so something has changed. It’s still a neat place to go see a good traditional jazz show, but not on your wedding night. The staff at the Top of the Mark is top notch, very classy place.

William asks…

How did Adam and Eve live in Garden of Eden?

Did they lived in a nice beautiful building? Or cave or sleep on grass?

They were naked all the time? No belly button. No genitals before they ate the Tree of Knowledge good and evil?

Why God needs a woman for Adam? Was Eve going to have an easy child labor, no pain, just have babies?

Or did God knew Eve was going to eat the fruit eventually….???

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well if your god didn’t know she would eat the fruit eventually, what kind of god is “he”?? I mean “he” created everything and everyone (supposedly), so he made the serpent that had eve eat the apple, so it was all god’s fault.

Mythical creatures. Mythical beings. Mythical story. The end.

Sharon asks…

Best lining to use to transport plants from pot to pot?

I’m growing some plants, and I realize that one day they must leave their plastic Tupperware cribs and move onto larger pots. But that process sounds scary, and with my luck I would just screw the whole thing up. So, I’m asking what is the best lining to use to transport my plants from pot to pot? And if there is a choice I would like it to be biodegradable, you know? Easier to transplant, eh?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Newspaper works great for a liner. If you want to eventually plant them outside, you can buy pots made of peat moss at a home improvement or gardening center. I have also seen pots that are made of crushed paper pulp that are meant to be temporary, you just need to make sure you have something water proof underneath to protect your floor, furniture, or whatever they may currently be sitting upon.

Steven asks…

I have a horrible drain in my front garden – what should i use to cover it up?

I appreciate it still needs to be accessable and a plant pot is the obvious choice but has anyone got any alternative ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

In many garden catalogs and websites that sell outdoor ornamentals, I have seen fake boulders they are made of plastic and easy to remove. They are quite real looking.

What’s your opinion of gorilla gardeners(illicit cultivators)?

http://www.guerrillagardening.org/

http://foodfreedom.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/guerilla_gardening_vb.jpg

Seemingly certain local councils are opposed to the gorilla gardening movement, but where’s the harm?
Fair point Prop, all the drivers I know would consider it a game to run over the pothole flowers so they wouldn’t last long anyway.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Wonderful!

Except, “pothole guerrilla gardening?”
That might be going a little too far as the roots could possibly damage the pavement further,
and make it more difficult and costly to repair.
That would be a valid point coming from local councils.

And was that a sewage drain in the picture?
That would be a no-no also.

Otherwise, brilliant!

Sharon asks…

Spiritually speaking: Who knew that potash was a fertilizer?

http://blogs.wsj.com/source/2010/08/18/bhp-loses-potash-patience/

I mean, it seems like such a waste. We used to just empty our bowls in the trash. Who knew we could have emptied them in the garden to help the plants grow?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I do…but then I grew up on the prairies.

Robert asks…

Why do some Christians consider curiosity a vice?

I just read a blog over at the New York Times’ website by a Christian apologist who insists that curiosity is a bad thing. He mentions the story of the Garden of Eden and quotes several Christian leaders over the last few centuries who believed that the pursuit of knowledge was a bad thing. Do many Christians feel this way? If so, why?

http://fish.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/14/does-curiosity-kill-more-than-the-cat/?ref=global-home

GardenersCardiff answers:

This is more knee-jerk anti-science rant than anything. Without any evidence or justification, Stanley Fish claims that research scientists “are obsessive and obsessed,” and “have no power of self-control because they have no allegiance — to a deity, to human flourishing, to community — that might serve as a check on their insatiable curiosity.”

That’s an insulting generalization. No allegiance? I wonder if he knows how running a research lab works. You don’t needlessly subject animals to torture. You don’t run experiments on any old thing. It’s very much directed by money, by IRB approval, and by what the public at large wants to fund. Which is spurred by real human problems (and profit motive).

Yes, new ethical situations arise as science develops, but that simply means we should put in money and effort towards neuroethics and bioethics, not stop research altogether.

Sandy asks…

Can you give me an honost opinion?

I see real crappy songs and short stories getting acclaim here, please tell me what you really think. The truth helps not hurts.

It was like the sword just did her bidding. She never had to train herself to use it. She had a lack of thought when it was doing it’s work, her mind void of everything. Just the rhythm of dancing, of step forward, step back. It came as easy as breathing, as effortless as a heartbeat. The clang of metal was rarely heard in her encounters, it seemed so barbaric to bash your weapon against another, and because she was so natural at the use of bladed weapons that her sword more often touched flesh. When it did come in contact with another sword or knife it was a deliberate kiss meant only to set up the next move.
She had her first experience with a bladed weapon when she was only three, she had stolen her fathers favorite meat knife and taken it into the garden. It had a balance she could feel, slightly off center. The wooden handle was worn with his touch, and she could see the fine lines of his finger prints still on the blade from the last use. Her father was fastidious about keeping his blades sharp, you could shave with this knife. From six feet away she skewered a snake to the ground as it moved through the parsley patch, the knife seeming to leap from her had of its own violation, like the snake was a magnet and the knife its polar opposite. The knife centered in the snakes body widthwise, and planted hilt deep just behind its wedge shaped head. The snake had hoped to make a meal of one of the garden rats, and instead became the first sheath she ever owned. Her father hearing her tale made her the sheath and gave to her the meat knife, fending off the warnings of her mother, of how a three year old should never handle a knife let alone carry one at her side. He looked at her with sad eyes some times, knowing she would become something beyond him, something foreign to others, something they would not understand. He had seen it before with his other children.
Now she carried an assortment of bladed weapons, among other more exotic weapons she procured in travels across the lands. Practicing with them even though their use came natural to her, for to her it was not practice but pleasure. She killed her first man at 12, her meat knife (she called her snake blade) just nicking the artery of her foes ankle, a deliberate action so as to watch him bleed out into the sand. To hear him beg for his life. She felt more remorse for the snake, it was only looking for dinner. This man had been looking for prey.

He still liked the simple tricks. Playing fire throughout his fingertips, pulling coins from some ones ear. The true sleight of hand. Or shocking people with his handshake. A simple trick of focusing static electricity into his palm. Just a little bit of focus was all it took, really just a thought.
He learned as a baby that he could “focus”. He could draw toys to himself, or make animals do his bidding. He didn’t know then that the best of mages worked years to get enough focus to harness just one familiar, and that none of them worked wood or metal. As a rule abhorred manual labor, and thought of sleight of hand as tomfoolery. The sleight of hand actually took practice and dedication. True physical ability. It felt good to work his hands, doing carpentry with his father was the best, and he could apply his “focus” to what ever project he was on and imbue it with his essence. The problem; it was then a negative for anyone else. Only his father seemed to be able to tolerate anything he created with his focus. And even he rarely actually touched those creations. He would smile and say, this is yours. And it is beautifully done, but we cannot sell it. Others simply looked at them with distaste, thinking it an ugly thing. His room was full of his own creations. He loved his father for never complaining about the use of the material he worked so hard to obtain, the hours of effort he spent creating things that could never be sold. He was asked politely to leave his mages apprenticeship. Politely because they were scared of him. The other students laughed when he created a wand from the branch of an ancient oak tree, laughed because everyone new that true mages did not use wands. That was for tricksters to, used to distract the audiences attention from the bumbling sleight of hand tricks they performed. But he didn’t bumble, and he was no trickster. He could feel the universal energy flowing through the wand, he could see it. The branch of the ancient tree had seen over two hundred seasons. It had called him to it, gave itself up. He traveled miles into the old forest to find it. Didn’t know what he was going to find, just following the tickle of his focus, sitting under the tree for two days listening to it grow. Then harvesting the branch that was to become the wand. Taking it to his fathers workshop and sanding it down to the heartwood. Saving the wood dust from the

John asks…

Are there employment mafias in New York?

I maybe exaggerating but i believe there are employment mafias in America. Employment in america is something everybody had a right to. specifically because its the way you earn a living. I believe that to be employed is an Universal right. Every person has the right to work and be employed decently. But finding a job is becoming harder and harder. Find a job job in America is like trying to find gold.
When in the past it wasn’t like that. In the past when you were sent to a place to be hired you were hired right away if they needed someone now they look at you if you are black, the cloth you were, the way you speak they don’t even bother to have you fill an application and then they say I already hired someone or the classic leave your phone number I will call you and they never call.
And those that actually hire workers treat them bad, because they know that out there Competition is fierce. So employers become despots, ogres and tyrants. It’s surprising to see the great amount of discrimination that is going on in New York right now there is no regard for the antharrasing and anti-discrimination laws no enforcement no respect. discrimination comes from the whites, chinese,
europeans, spanish etc.
In the past If you were send to place for a job you were hired. But now you risk losing five bucks in train or bus fare what ever you use.
When Adan was in the Garden of Eden The one thing God guaranteed him and had for him was job, his job was to take care of the garden Genesis 2:15 The Lord took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. So God meant man to work. Adan had a cool job he had no one pushing him around or discriminating him or yelling at him. His job was easy. So what I want to say is that God gives us an example of how he wants things to be done. To work is an universal right.
I dont see ants denying other ants the right to work. I don’t see the bees doing it either.
Everything works in the Universe the Sun, the Moon the stars even our bodies are continually working. So work is part of human nature.
And work is an intrinsically and necessary thing in society.
The Other day I spoke to a fellow we made agreement through an employment agency that I was gonna go see the job in two weeks.
He said he wanted to see me in two weeks an that he was gonna hire me. I waited two long weeks. when the time came I paid 30 bucks on train fare to go see the the job. When I got at the train station I called the fellow he told me that that he had already hired someone and I had called WHO before saying I was not interested in the position, I never called him. He wanted me to go back from the train station something I refused i walked for about 30 minutes two where he was in Cold Springs and spoke to him face to face. Finally I asked him to give me back my train fare something to which he agree although he only gave me back 20 bucks I lost 10 bucks that they then I came back to New York.
Bu thimpressionon I get is that there is a job mafia going on and somehow they controsystematicallyly who gets hired and whdintnt
In the past jobs in the New York were a free market issue… but not anymore.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Honestly, there’s gangs, mafia, etc wherever you go. Don’t be too paranoid about it or whatever. It happens. You can still get a job. XD

Big friends Problem?? Pls HELP?

okay here is my question .. I’m 19 in sophomore yr at college, the thing is people like me so much BUT i never feel included. last year i made a group of friends (like 3 girls n 4 dudes) i was so happy .. we went everywhere together, studied together .. u no like best friends.. but friends just LOSE INTEREST in me somehow. after six month we weren’t friends anymore.. everyone found other friends and they r like super happy. so i moved on, n found another group of friends, but they were friends since kinder garden or something, so i wasn’t feeling very included as well.. but i made a good progress, they liked me so much..every time they went out they called me to hang with them, i started to feel included, they liked my jokes, my stories. but a week ago the same freaken thing happened again.. they went all on a trip n didn’t tell me.. i found out later that they were gone.. n when they got back they acted like they were here the whole time.. Now, they don’t even call me to hang.
last month there was like 4 birthdays, n i wasn’t invited to any of them!! i didn’t even know there was a party till it was over. all my friends were there n no one even mentioned it!!
this thing started happening to me since i was 16. I can’t have a constant friend or a group of friends. n i’m not the kinda guy who is like a geek or something, everyone say dat i’m stylish, girls say i’m super cute, i’m not dumb. n ppl tell me u r easy to be loved. i help my friends with homework n projects… i do everything they ask. n i don’t have like self-pride..and yet i always end up with no friends
so what did i do wrong???

GardenersCardiff answers:

I wasn’t sure what advice to give you until I reached the end of your question. And here is the critical line, “I do everything they ask”. There it is. I’m not saying they are, but consider that they are using you. If they get you to help with homework and all that stuff, but don’t invite you to fun stuff…I don’t know. I don’t know them or you, so I can’t make that conclusion. But another thing I can say is that you have to learn to say no. If you’re always doing everything that they ask and agreeing to do everything they say, they have no way of knowing what you like and what you don’t like. Therefore, they have no way to get to know your personality. It’s much more complicated than this, but here is a short example: Bob asks Jen to help with math. Jen says yes. Tom asks Jen to tutor him in chemistry. Jen says yes. Maggie asks Jen to help her make breakfast, Jen agrees. Thus, Bob, Tom, and Maggie, all think that Jen likes math, chemistry and cooking. Maggie could be really close to Jen, and Tom just a classmate, but since Jen agrees to both happily, Maggie doesn’t feel that Jen regards her as a best friend, so she doesn’t know that Jen thinks that Maggie is closer to her than Tom, so Maggie doesn’t treat Jen like a best friend either. Also, if Jen agrees to everything, her friends can’t tell what her personality is. They think she is like a robotic person who likes everything and smiles at everything…people have more respect for you if you sometimes say no. Don’t get me wrong, still keep helping people, but also let your personality shine through. 🙂 Now of course, I could be going in the completely wrong direction here, but it’s all I got. Hope this helps at least a little bit 🙂 !

Mary asks…

A question to Christians about the Creation story?

So God made man, animals, trees, etc. and put them all in the Garden of Eden and the only rule for humans was that they couldn’t eat the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Now, God is supposed to be omniscient so he knew that they would indeed eat from the Tree of Knowledge. So then why would he punish them for eating from it? He created them with the ability to disobey him, he put them in a situation with easy access to the Tree of knowledge, and he had foreknowledge that they would disobey his rules. And yet he did nothing to stop them, he didn’t put up any warnings or obstructions between Adam and Eve and the Tree, he didn’t tell them that an evil snake would try and tempt them, he just sat back knowing that they would sin and prepared to punish them for it even though he could have easily stopped it. How is this fair? An analogy for this is if I gave a kid a a delicious piece of cake and told him not to eat it even though I knew my diabolical cousin would come in as soon as I left the room and convince the kid that eating it was the right thing to do. And then I sit back and wait for him to eat the cake and when he does I beat him and throw him out of my house, even though I easily could have stopped it from happening at any point or at least warned them. So why would he do this? And is it fair?

The black atheist has spoken.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Your account is not entirely accurate, but I’ll answer within its confines…

You fail to understand that it is not about man but God. God is not one-dimensional as man is, who must choose between being one thing OR another, and is in fact all of His attributes equally and completely, simultaneously. Therefore, both evil and good in this world show His glory. And it was precisely to show His glory that is the purpose for creation itself. None of what transpired was a surprise to Him, in fact, if read in order, it is shown that He put the signs in the stars (day 4) of what was to come before the rest of what was made was even made! (See NASA photos of the center of the black hole in “The Darling”, one of our neighboring galaxies that’s situated in such a way that they were finally able to look directly into a black hole and take a photo of one of the “signs” placed there on day 4 of creation!)

Also I’d challenge you to read the whole chapters through again of Genesis 1 and 2. Some believe all was created and placed in a Garden, while others believe there is a gap between those first two chapters and all was created sometime prior to making a Garden and placing his chosen Adam and Eve within it.

Lastly, you have a childish perspective that the world is somehow supposed to be “fair”, and that “fairness” is to be extended only to mankind. It’s time to grow up and stop putting limited finite and childish views on that which is far higher and Infinite than that. Or don’t…He gives you that right, but remember, He also tells you what the consequences of that choice is; and if you haven’t learned anything else from “the creation story”, He abides by His rules regardless of what we think…you see, as pointed out already…it’s His story and show, not ours.

Ken asks…

Myklia’s Diary (newly wed) Long But Funny?

Dear Diary,

Monday: Now home from honeymoon and settled in our new home, it’s fun to cook for Bob. Today I made an angel food cake and the recipe said, “Beat 12 eggs separately.” Well, I didn’t have enough bowls to do that, so I had to borrow enough bowls to beat the eggs in. The cake turned out fine.

Tuesday: We wanted a fruit salad for supper. The recipe said, serve without dressing.” So I didn’t dress. But, Bob happened to bring a friend home for supper that night. Did they ever look startled when I served the salad.

Wednesday: I decided to serve rice and found a recipe which said, “Wash thoroughly before steaming the rice.” So I heated some water and took a bath before steaming the rice. Sounded kinda silly in the middle of the week. I can’t say it improved the rice any.

Thursday: Today Bob asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said, “Prepare ingredients, then toss on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving.” I hunted all over the garden by my mom’s. So I tossed my salad into the bed of lettuce and stood over there one hour so the dog would not take it. Bob came over and asked if I felt all right. I wonder why?

Friday: Today I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said, “Put all ingredients in a bowl and beat it.” Beat it I did, right over to my mom’s house. There must have been something wrong with the recipe, because when I came back home again it looked the same as when I left it.

Saturday: Bob went shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. I’m sure I don’t know how hens dress for Sunday. I never noticed back on the farm, but I found a doll dress and some little shoes. I thought the hen looked real cute. When Bob saw it, I wondered why he counted to 10.

Sunday: Today Bob’s folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast, but all we had in the icebox, was hamburger. So I put it in the oven and set the controls for roast. Must be the oven, because it still came out hamburger.

Good night, Dear Diary. This has been an exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come, so I can try a new recipe on Bob.

Carol asks…

Some questions on the this article about Benjamin Franklin…?

From Time Magazine:

” The Spies Around Franklin

The system was remarkably simple. Every Tuesday evening, detailed reports of what had transpired in Ben Franklin’s French household made their way, in invisible ink, to the southern perimeter of the Tuileries Gardens. There the missives were stuffed into a bottle and lowered by string into a deep hollow at the foot of a tree. After dark the British ambassador’s secretary fished them out to be dispatched to London and deposited his side of the correspondence under a neighboring boxwood.

Franklin was encircled by spies from the minute he set foot in Paris to solicit support for the Revolutionary War. On all minds the burning question was whether France intended to assist the rebel colonies, and if so, when and how it would do so. The French monarchy had its own efficient news service in thousands of paid informants who reported from their favorite cafés, their mistresses’ boudoirs, their medical rounds, their hotel desks, to police chief Jean-Charles Lenoir. Among Lenoir’s roundups was a weekly catalog of the city’s sexual escapades. This was a city of which it was said that when two Parisians talked, a third inevitably listened. Lenoir was among the first to trail the celebrated American on his arrival, sounding a note of uneasiness about his potent celebrity. The chief had serious competition: Lord Stormont, the British ambassador in Paris, pledged to observe the “veteran of mischief” as closely and as inconspicuously as he could. As that was not easy for an accredited ambassador, British intelligence stepped in.

The British agents reported to an immensely gifted master spy who spoke better French than most Parisians and whom even Lenoir’s men found difficult to shadow. America might claim some credit for Paul Wentworth’s spectacular performance: he was a New Hampshire native. His agents were a varied but inventive bunch, filching diaries and diving into closets. They proved recklessly unable to resist Paris’ charms. One agent, as fond of back stairways as of disreputable addresses, never left Paris without attending a drunken orgy. In the course of one such evening, he entrusted his confidential documents to a more sober reveler, who saw that they made their way to Versailles.

Franklin knew himself to be the object of what he aptly termed “violent curiosities” but at home insisted that he had no intention of speaking other than the truth or of implementing any particular security precautions — or even of dismissing his valet if he were “a spy, as probably he is.” Against all counsel, he stayed his course; he reasoned in part that the quantity of information in itself provided a kind of smoke screen. His apathy about security came at a price. Armed with detailed inventories of French munitions bound for America, the British were repeatedly able to confront the French with evidence of this collusion.

Meanwhile, the weekly white-ink dispatches arrived like clockwork in London, where, moistened with a chemical solution, their hidden messages appeared in red. And the source? Decades after his death, he was revealed to have been a perfectly loyal servant — of both sides. The consummate double agent was the brilliant Edward Bancroft, Franklin’s secretary and one man who had had his confidence all along.

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2012113_2012104_2012012,00.html ”

1. About the second paragraph: Did the French spied on Franklin too? If they did, What were the French looking from Franklin?

2. About the third paragraph: Who is the gifted master spy mentioned in the first line? ” Paul Wentworth ” ? Why should the Americans claim credit for his skill? And the reveler mentioned in the last sentence who ” who saw that they made their way to Versailles. ” — what’s his role in this subject?

3. From the fourth paragraph : What does the last sentence mean?

GardenersCardiff answers:

1. Yes, it says the police chief himself followed Franklin. That the French monarchy had 1000’s of paid informants that watched everybody. They spied on Franklin because they spied on everyone important and he was a celebrity.
2. Yes, Paul Wentworth was the British master spy. The Americans could take some credit for his talents because he was born and grew up in American New Hampshire (which was then of course still a British colony).
The reveler mentioned just refers to the prior sentences when it talks about Wentworth’s secret service of British spies in Paris, it says though they were so successful they often got drunk and attended Paris orgies….the one guy being too drunk to carry out a mission that time, having to give the secret papers to someone else to deliver.
3. The paragraph talks about that Franklin knew about all the different spies watching him but refused to hide, do things in secret etc. Because he thought it would make him look bad and they would still get the same information anyway. So, he did things openly. The last sentence means that although a good strategy Franklin’s ‘openness’ provided the British with easy knowledge of military supplies France was sending to the Americans, which kept getting the French in trouble with the British because it gave the British proof of the shipments, and the British complained to the French.

Susan asks…

how to stop people from stepping onto plants?

well i had some good seedlings and i transplanted them into the garden yesterday and sure thing today i found them all trampled over. i mean they are pretty easy to see if you look down chances are no one looked down and just walked all over it. im not really made about it since i have more seeds and all but how can i prevent this i mean i want to utilize my garden and where i planted them is where their is sun. the rest a big fruit tree is covering it i did trim most of it but the tree is big.

so how can i make it to the point someone won’t step on the plants? i don’t want to be container gardening all my life and i want to fix the garden up it hasn’t been maintained in YEARS..

something eye catching for older people because my grand and i are the only ones who go in the garden
hmm i think i will have to fence it off or simply grow them till they are somwhat root bound and plant them or at least grow in a bigger pot then transplant when bigger.

i transplanted when too early to avoid shock so they were too small to see i guess i’ll grow em bigger.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You can also place large stones or stakes around the plants. Stakes are cheap and you can spray paint them in neon colors so people cannot miss them. It may look tacky, but it’s cheap and worth it until the plants get big enough.

You can also put those tomato cage things around them short term.

David asks…

I’d like intelligent, respectful comments on my stated frustration.?

Maybe, I’m just expressing my frustrations rather than seeking an answer, as I’m not sure that an answer will exist in my lifetime. As a result of my past experiences, what I’ve learned works for me has more to do with a total package than one specific aspect of a person, yet each aspect is equally as important to make the package work for me. I understand that I’ve made choices that limit my options (many women aren’t interested in my choice of simple country living), and I accept responsibility for those choices and the resulting limitations. I have no desire to have anyone change for me. I am more interested in finding the rare woman who already fits what I am seeking.

I appreciate a woman who can carry on an intelligent conversation (not limited to text speak), someone who shows she cares about more than herself without ignoring taking care of herself (volunteering in her community), someone who has a good balance of respect, responsibility and playfulness, someone who respects differences in others without expecting them to conform to her values and beliefs (including my preference of philosophy over religion), someone who loves nature and isn’t averse to getting her hands dirty while working with me in the garden or on home projects, an easy-going woman who appreciates tranquility, subtleties and sensuality and hasn’t been numbed to anything but extremes, someone who is more introverted (like me) than extroverted, someone who values open/honest communication (not just filling all voids with non-stop chatter), someone who appreciates equality in a relationship rather than expecting to be provided her entitlement package (seeking no more than she brings to the relationship), and someone who prioritizes keeping herself healthy and fit (mentally and physically) (I’m drawn more to small packages than large packages – proportionally smaller than me).

The last item seems to be the issue for most women, as they seem to prioritize fine dining over presenting the best package they can. They say that it is normal to get fat as you age, yet I don’t see the reason that I can put forth the effort to exercise and watch what I eat, but they can’t. The ones who have maintained a slender body seem to feel that they should be rewarded monetarily for doing that. I expect no more from a partner than I am willing to do myself. Also, I am drawn to small-built women (not short), and it is challenging to find small-built women who don’t feel that they are flawed and not feminine. What’s the logic in the belief that women are more feminine as their breasts grow larger? It’s not much fun to be in a relationship with someone who feels insecure or defective. Can’t they see that for every type of person, there are people who truly appreciate what they have to offer?

Women get up in arms when I include a physical requirement, claiming that I am superficial and unrealistic, yet they don’t seem to have problems expressing their preferences in a partner who has a particular build or eye/hair color or tattoos or money. I’m not saying that women who don’t fit my ideal are bad or wrong or defective or even being rejected. I’m just identifying what works for me, so that my partner will know that she truly is an amazing woman to me and not that I am just settling for her. I want for the women I don’t choose to find happiness with partners who truly appreciate them as they are. We all deserve to be appreciated for the total package we choose to share with a partner. I wish our society promoted valuing uniqueness rather than conformity, so people could truly thrive with self-confidence and self-esteem.

I’m not interested in hearing you blast me for my choices, but I would like to hear well thought out comments to my desire for people to accept responsibility for the results of the choices they make and my desire for people to believe in what they have to offer and not settle for anyone who doesn’t appreciate their total package.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I understand your frustration. I have extremely high standards for myself and for others, and i don’t feel that settling for “almost” will ever work out.
However, i think that people like you and i sometimes create an idea or an image of our perfect mates that doesn’t exist anywhere other than our heads.
It’s a double edged sword.

Helen asks…

Why is there an account of God creating two adams in the Old Tetsament?

Im not saying this for argument sake i just need clarification as im studying my bible i find this part at the beggining of Genesis rather confusing? First it says God made Humans on the 6th day a man and a woman easy enough to understand. Yet as I read further it says on the 3rd day when God made the earth ( correct me please if im wrong) nothing was growing in the fields because God had not made it rain yet, there was no one to care for the plants. So water came up from the ground then God took dust from the earth or ground and made a man, He breathed life into him he was to take care of the garden of Eden. Saw that he was alone made him sleep deeply and took a rib and formed the first woman or Eve as we know. This is where im confused first it says humans were first made on day 6 now from further reading it states they were made on day 3 (never specificaly says day 3 yet we can assume because God just finished creating the earth on day 3) when earth and after sky was formed. Is this not a contradiction? First God made woman and man at the same time, now its saying he took Adams rib and made a women? Please some clarification maybe i missed something? I dont pretend to know alot about the Bible I just want some help understanding ? Thank you

GardenersCardiff answers:

The two accounts focus on different aspects of the story. Just because something is missing from one version (like three days passing) doesn’t necessarily mean it can’t have happened.

The first version is a list of what was made when.
The second version is a story about Eden.

Putting them together you get that God made the Earth on day 3, and then spent three days creating rain and other stuff that the second writer doesn’t consider relevant. Then He made Adam on day 6, took a rib and made Eve also on day 6. The first writer skipped the details and just said humans were created on that day.

David asks…

What more efficient way to prevent Mankind attaining Everlasting Life than to present a Dead-End “Easy Path?”?

Mankind was not ejected from The Garden of Eden because they sinned, but because they might eat The Fruit of The Tree of Life and so live for ever.

. GENESIS 3:22-24.

22. And The LORD God said,
“Behold, the Man is become as one of Us,
to know Good and Evil:
and now, lest he put forth his hand,
and take also of The Tree of Life,
and eat, and live for ever:”
23. Therefore the LORD God
sent him forth from The Garden of Eden,
to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24. So he drove out the Man;
and he placed at the East of The Garden of Eden Cherubims,
and a Flaming Sword which turned every way,
to keep The Way of The Tree of Life.

Therefore, any effort by Man to regain what was lost might be expected to be met with, if not outright sabotage, a certain… lack of Divine cooperation?

. GENESIS 11:3-9.

3. And they said one to another,
“Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.”
And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4. And they said,
“Go to, let us build us a city and a tower,
whose top may reach unto Heaven;
and let us make us a Name,
lest we be scattered abroad upon the Face of the whole Earth.”
5. And The LORD came down to see the City and the Tower,
which the Children of Men builded.
6. And The LORD said,
“Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language;
and this they begin to do:
and now nothing will be restrained from them,
which they have imagined to do.
7. “Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language,
that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
8. So The LORD scattered them abroad from thence
upon the face of all the Earth: and they left off to build the City.
9. Therefore is the name of it called Babel;
because the LORD did there confound the language of all the Earth:
and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad
upon the Face of all the Earth.

Never to suggest that Our Loving Creator does not always know best-

. GENESIS 6:7.

7. And The LORD said,
“I will destroy Man whom I have created from the Face of the Earth;
both Man, and Beast, and the Creeping Thing,
and the Fowls of the Air;
for it repenteth Me that I have made them.”

God would, of course never lie to us, nor mislead us with incomplete information, would He now- because that would be, um. (What’s that Word?) EVIL?

. PROVERBS 6:16-19.

16. These six things doth the LORD hate:
yea, seven are an abomination unto Him:
17. A Proud Look,
a Lying Tongue,
and hands that shed Innocent Blood,
18. An heart that deviseth Wicked Imaginations,
feet that be swift in Running to Mischief,
19. A False Witness that speaketh lies,
and he that Soweth Discord among Brethren.

. PROVERBS:26:24-28.

24. He that hateth dissembleth with his lips,
and layeth up deceit within him;
25. When he speaketh fair, believe him not:
for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26. Whose hatred is covered by deceit,
his wickedness shall be shewed
before the whole Congregation.
27. Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein:
and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
28. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it;
and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

Jesus Promised us Everlasting Life- did a good job of demonstrating that he could deliver.
Then Something Happened- Something that we knew was Impossible, but it happened anyway:

. MARK 4:33-34.

33. And with many such Parables
spake he the word unto them,
as they were able to hear it.
34. But without a Parable spake he not unto them:
and when they were alone,
he expounded all things to his Disciples.

Jesus delivered The Message, as Ordered- but he encoded it- scrambled it- so that the only people who could ever understand it would be those who didn’t need it.

. MATTHEW 13:10-23.

10. And the disciples came, and said unto him,
“Why speakest thou unto them in parables?”
11. He answered and said unto them,
“Because it is given unto you to know
The Mysteries of The Kingdom of Heaven,
but to them it is not given.
12. “For whosoever hath, to him shall be given,
and he shall have more abundance:
but whosoever hath not,
from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
13. “Therefore speak I to them in Parables:
because they seeing see not;
and hearing they hear not,
neither do they understand.
14. “And in them is fulfilled the Prophecy of Esaias, which saith,
‘By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand;
and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15. ‘For this people’s heart is waxed gross,
and their ears are dull of hearing,
and their eyes they have closed;
lest at any time they should see with their eyes
and hear with their ears,
and should understand with their heart,
and should be converted, and I should heal them.’ ”
So you see that Jesus followed the same Genesis Pattern of Immortality Prevention?
We see the Division of Brethren- who should be comrades together- by driving a wedge between those who could decipher riddles, and those who couldn’t. Giving those who did understand the Temptation to nobble their “competition,” rather than cooperate to help those perceived as weaker. We see Jesus dissemble The Truth to his Disciples, until the time he had to tell them that The Master Plan all along was that they would be made to share Heaven with the despised Gentiles (John 14-17).

Linda asks…

everyday garden problems?

my project is really about personal difficulties or hassles that affect a garden user directly… things that you physically dislike doing or find inconvenient to carry out.

For example: keeping beers cold when mates are round, picking up what your dog curls out, or getting the football out of the hedge.

Imagine a typical day in the garden… perhaps you’re hosting a bbq, having a water fight, or simply sitting with your feet up enjoying a brew.

What problem are you likely to face… and what could be done about it? I want to know how peoples lives can be made easier or more enjoyable- that’s my angle.

A couple of other examples are things like flies on your food, sun glare in your eyes, spilling your drink etc.

Please list anything garden related that’s a reluctant obligation or that you feel could be made easier some how- don’t be shy, anything is absolutely fine. If it gets on YOUR nerves, it gets on others’. Just brainstorming absolutely everything you can think of will be enormously helpful.
