Sandra asks…

Can I use an Olive Garden gift card AND coupon together?

Why yes, I AM cheap! Haha.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes you can. The gift card simply has a pre-determined value that has already been paid for. It is like paying in cash. The coupon is a special discount that is deducted off the bill.

Paul asks…

Good mothers day gifts?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Garden plants and your help in planting them. It’s inexpensive and you give of your time and you get your hands dirty all at the same time. The gift will keep on giving all summer long.

Lizzie asks…

How do you take care of outdoor plants in winter?

I am no expert when it comes to gardening. This spring, I accidentally locked myself out of the house and, having nothing better to do till my husband got home and let me in, I went to walmart and bought a bunch of gardening supplies, and planted a flower bed in our front yard. That one bed has progressed into pots, and hanging plants in our front and back yard, and now that cold weather is on its way, I realize that I have no idea how to take care of plants in the winter. Can I just leave them out? will they just die off and come back next spring? I can take my potted ones inside, but what about the ones in beds, are there any precautions I need to take, or will they be ok? We live in south Texas, so it should not get too cold, but it has been known to freeze here. I have various wildflowers and other garden plants in beds, Amaryllis and Calla Lilly, Impatiens, and a small Kumquat tree in pots. Is there any kind of maintenance I need to do to them over the winter?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Kumquat tree needs to be brought in.
Impatients will not tolerant freezing temps. Bring them in or cover with plasitc or sheet during cold temps.
Wildflowers will probably come back in seed form as long as that area gets water.
Calla lilly should be trimmed low….It should sprout out during mid spring.
Amaryllis needs to be brought in or covered.

Susan asks…

What are these seeds in my garden?

I decided to pull out the gardening supplies and do a little makeover to this tiny garden I have at the front of my house. I was pulling out weeds when I saw these small things appear from underneath the soil when I pulled it away. I don’t know anything about seeds, but these looked like tiny onions and when they were bigger they looked like chestnuts. They have a brownish skin and are white underneath.

So are these from actual plants, weeds, or are they more maple trees growing in my garden?

Thank you for your help.

GardenersCardiff answers:

They would be bulbs, corms, or tubers–depending on what the plant is. Plants such as tulip, daffodils, jonquils, lilies and such grow from corms or bulbs. Tubers are such things as elephant ears, canna lilies, day lilies grow tuberously. 100’s and 100’s of very pretty plants grow this way. Maple tree grow off a little winged samivar seed that has a small hard nut on one end and a sheath like a wing on the other. Definitely maple seeds are much smaller than a chestnut.

Mandy asks…

What do you do if your boy friend keeps asking you for money?

He asks for money for weed. Like its okay. He just ask me for money like hay can I have some money. Like it grows on tree or some thing. It’s driving me crazy. I mean if you want to spend Money on weed get a job support your own habit. Or quit.

GardenersCardiff answers:

So basically your paying him to be your boyfriend….. Dump that loser

Donald asks…

Why does everyone care so much that weed be legalized?

1st off, the Govt will end up putting a sin tax on it and making it even more expensive than it is now.

2nd They’ll probably make the penalties even tougher for growing your own so that you will be even more afraid and have to buy theirs.

3rd Now we got a bunch of inexperienced smokers out there driving around and acting stupid.

4th They’ll probably make you register or something so they can keep track of who does what.

I mean it makes absolutely no sense! In most (if not all) states it’s a misdemeanor as long as you only have enough for personal use anyway. So it’s not like you’re going to get into big trouble with the way it is now.

Is it just because there are so many people who want to smoke but are afraid because it’s illegal so they want it legalized? It would be treated just like alcohol so oyu wouldn’t be able to drive while smoking or walk down the street or fire up at the local Wal Mart.

Please help me understand why legalizing is better.

weeder
wiseguy – less than an ounce you won’t. And is the cop coming to your house?
tyranus – when it’s legal you’ll pay $400. That’s my point.
Anyone who thinks that the weed will cheaper when legalized is insane and there is no guarantee that you will see any of it back OR have any other taxes reduced. I already pay $20 for a case a beer that costs $2 to make due to taxes and the same thing would happen with weed.

Also, if you think they would let you just “grow on your own” you’re crazy. That would take $$$ out of there pockets and the growing of tabacco is not a good analogy. Who the hell grows their tobacco now to avoid buying cigs.

I guess I’m just old school and like it just the way it is. Whether it’s legal or not had no effect on me now and legalizing it would only make it owrse for me. And yes…..It’s all about me! I don’t know you people.
Some of you guys are clueless. Since when has the Govt EVER done something that more a benefit to you than to them? You guys are in dreamland and we they ever do you will see and be like “Dammit! why couldn’t we just keep it underground like we used to!”
Don’t you ever wonder why you pay $150 bucks for $20 worth of prescription pills? THE US GOVT IS WHY
But you can buy them much cheaper elsewhere but it is illegal! You seeing the correlation now?
geez!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Think about it, if it’s legalized the government will charge big time taxes and make mucho dinero and they can help pay your SS wages when you retire but the best part is, the dope dealers won’t make any money out of it anymore and that will be worth it all.

Charles asks…

how and what are best ways of making your own liquid fertiliser using the outside rain barrel ?any hints?

liquid fertilizers?anyone got any good recipes for using garden cuttings in my rain barrel,to help fertilize my garden plants and lawns.dont grow any brassicas or veg, only garden plants and weeds. can weeds be used to help make a fertilizer? or is it best to just use grass and plant leaf cuttings.?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi the best liquid fertiliser is sheep’s droppings, collect in a sack, fill your water barrel with water, then hang your sack in the water and await the brew, about 4/5 weeks, you could also use horse dropping, grass cutting and any other green vegetation can be used in a compost heap but this takes much longer to break down have two, then you can spread them over two years,it all work good gardening John

John asks…

When is it safe to plant veggies in Gardening Zone 5?

My father always told me not to plant before Memorial Day weekend. I noticed the newly published gardening zone changes though so I was wondering if it might be safe to plant a bit earlier then people used to? According to the new zoning, we are located on the borderline of zones 5a and 5b. I have peas, cucumber, zuchinni, summer squash, hot pepper, green bell pepper, and pumpkin seedlings growing in the sun porch. I am wondering when is the earliest it would be safe to transplant them into the garden which is getting rototilled today? I also want to buy some tomato and more pepper plants to put out there when the time comes too.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I live in zone 5.

I have had some garden plants in the ground since mid March (radishes, lettuce, potatoes, carrots etc.)

My tomatoes (still protected) have been in the ground since mid April.

Of course you can lose some plants to frost if you are not careful….. But if you wait until nearly June to plant tomatoes… It will be late July before you have any ripe tomatoes.

Planting by the calendar, in exactly the same way every year… Is silly. If you have night temperatures approaching 50 degrees consistently… You can plant tomatoes and peppers. You can plant things like lettuce and spinach much earlier…. They can get snowed on and still come out fine (they actually LIKE cold nights… And tolerate temps down into the upper 20’s if it only lasts a few hours).

Joseph asks…

What plants would help to repel wasps?

I live in gardening zones either 5 or 6, it’s very dry here, gets hot in the summer and cold with lots of snow in the winter. What plant would be ideal for deterring wasps?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t know of any plants. I hang glass wasp traps (or you can make your own but the glass ones are really pretty) I bait mine with fermented honey and water, but you can use jam or fruit juice. If you get the traps out early and keep them going all summer, you may be able to keep them from nesting too close to your house. Also, if you see them coming and going from holes in the ground, you can cut plastic 12-ounce water bottles in half and screw the halves into the ground over each hole. Your yard will look like a bubble garden but the wasps will all be gone in a few days. The glass tops from big Yankee candles are also good for this.

Donna asks…

Can anyone tell what zone 10 means, in gardening terms.?

I want to grow a Brunelsia pauciflora but would like to know more about the conditions needed. Thank you.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The Brunfelsia pauciflora originates in Brazil and Peru. This means that they flourish in a tropical climate. They can stand a temperature of 50 degrees F in the winter and survive at
41 degrees F for short periods. They like a moist atmosphere and being well watered in the summer but must be shaded from hot sun.In the winter they should be kept fairly dry. In Zone 10 the winter temperatures can go to 22 degrees F with the lowest recorded temperatur around 6 degrees F.
The zones 13, 15-17and 20-24 are suitable for Brunfelsias.

Robert asks…

Is it hard to grow weed indoors?

Do you save money by growing it on your own rather than buying it? I’m specifically interested in hash. If anyone has any experiences with hash could you please tell me about it?:)
Oh and the title question: is it hard to grow weed indoors? And if you get caught with it can you go to jail? Sorry I’m so naive about this, I’m a beginner:)

GardenersCardiff answers:

You should look into the ‘Autoflowering’ strains.. Very very easy to grow, from seed to harvest in 60-70 days quality ganj

William asks…

how often has your own child grow out of toddler clothing?(2t-5t) and how often do you shop for them?

i am just curious about clothing sizes when kids get to certain ages and other people’s experiences.i know all kids are different weight and height.my baby is almost 6 months is a way taller percentile wise than most ones her age,so i know she will continue to grow like a weed and it wont stop no time soon.lol.i shopped every two months for clothes since she was born.

if you could share your clothing cost with us too.just to know what other mothers/fathers are doing brand,store,new/used wise with their children’s clothing.all people have a different view on what clothes their kids are in.why is your preference the way it is? it would be fun to hear,if you do not mind sharing.

thank you for your answers, all are welcome.

GardenersCardiff answers:

My son is 2.5 and he has always been in a little bigger size than his age (I think most are). He has really long arms so his shirts are 4T and 5T, his jeans are currently 4T but he has some 4T that he can still wear. I am miffed by the guidelines they make children’s clothes with. Some brands I need a huge size and others he can wear 3T. Just last night he picked out some pj’s to wear that I have not had a chance to throw out yet. They are 24 months, a shirt and pants (the tight kind) and he fit right into them.

I do a lot of consignment shopping and also get him clothes off Ebay. You can buy lots of nearly new clothing (brand name) for ridiculously low prices. We are constantly getting some with the tags still attached. Other than that I like to buy Gar-animal clothing (Wal Mart) because he can wreck them and it’s not a big deal. It’s about $3/each for a shirt and pants.

Lisa asks…

Do you grow your own plants? LOL?

Like weeds and other garden plants? Thank you.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes phil all the plants i grow are my own but they are just your average house plants lol
