Donna asks…

What if your husband wanted to put hundreds of gnome statues in the front yard?

Maybe not hundreds, but enough to fill the yard. It would probably set a record for garden gnomes. The lawn is gravel anyway because of desert climate. I am thinking about doing this without bothering to tell my wife or neighbors. What do you think they will do upon seeing my front yard filled with garden gnome statues? Would you be upset if your husband did this?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Heck no i’d be tickled pink and then ask him if he had lost his mind ☺
never mind what the neighbors would say just hope the local news or newspaper didnt get wind of it.lol

Linda asks…

Have you ever broken a garden gnome?

I heard that if you break one, you get cursed, and garden gnomes will haunt you forever.

GardenersCardiff answers:

No-I have not.

Daniel asks…

Where can I find a ceramic unpainted gnome?

I can’t find a store anywhere around my hometown that sales unpainted, ceramic/bisque garden gnomes. Anybody know any good online stores?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Http://www.gnomebisque.com/

FAQ on their site…
“Do you have unfinished (without color) gnomes available?”
Yes. Just specify ‘Unfinished (without color)’ by immediately e-mailing Customer Service after placing your order. Be sure to include your name and order number with the request. Prices and shipping rates are the same as finished gnomes.

Ruth asks…

What would you do if you were suddenly attacked by a garden gnome?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Ha ha!! I’d totally shishkabob his head with a stake that i had for some reason that helped me plant my flowers.. 😛

Paul asks…

who’s gonna win this fight?

some elves just attacked my garden gnomes.man i need some more beverages.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The garden gnomes eventually.I ‘ll bring you a cooler of beer. However, I think your gnomes should suffer a little first for drinking all the beer in the fridge again, plus it is free entertainment. Cheers.

Charles asks…

How To Stop Turf Wars?

For the past 2 years the Lawn Gnomes and Pink Flamingos in our hood have been at war. They have attacked each other with weed whackers and gardening claws, even resorting to massacring entire clans with a Black & Decker self propelled mower.

Last week we brought in a Granny With Bloomers to act as a mediator however she was attacked last night by a herd of polyresin deer and may not recover. How can we stop the carnage?!?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It sounds to me as if you should call your state Gnovernor, who will instruct the Attorney Gneneral to send in some Gnendarmes.

Mark asks…

How to start a Vegetable Garden?

Hey! I plan on starting a vegetable garden soon, I’ve never done any gardening before. Would an experience gardener like to offer some advice? I’ve got a few basic questions!

1) Do you test pH levels of the dirt in your garden? If so, can you have different pH levels in each row of plants?

2) I read that you can’t plant strawberries close to peppers because they spread diseases. Have you tried this before? Is it better to have 2 gardens?

3) What do I need to do to the soil beforehand? Obviously I need to loosen it up a bit, maybe get some nice healthy dirt in there. Make it moist. Anything else?

4) What tools should I buy to start off with? I’m thinking a shovel, a trowel, some gloves, and a cultivator.Would you suggest anything else?

5) I know I’m a bit late on the spring season. What are good items to plant at this time? (I live in Tallahassee, FL) I would really like peppers, strawberries, spinach, and butternut squash (or pumpkin). Possibly blueberries or raspberries. Are these ok to plant at this time of the year?

6) Where is a good, local, informative place to shop for plants, seeds, tools, etc? I’d like an organic garden.

Any other advice you’d like to offer? Thanks a bunch for any help!!! I really appreciate it!!!

Any other advice???

GardenersCardiff answers:

You are gonna love gardening, don’t try to do it all in one year. Get to know where the sun shines the most, and where the shaded areas are. Veggies need at least 6 hours of sun per day. And lots and lots of water everyday if you do not get rain.

Since you are a beginner, this year start your garden with plants that you get from a garden center or nursery. They are called bedding plants and come in a six pack. Look for a little tag sticking in the six pact showing directions on how to grow the plants. If the tag is not there, ask for one or buy something else. Directions are VERY important.

Seeds are not always easy to grow.

Two good things to do for yourself is to call your local County Extension Service and ask for all the information that they have about home gardening in your area. They usually have a packet/kit of things for the home gardener.

And number two would be to pick up a couple of beginner books. You really do need to know about soil, compost, mulch and etc.

To keep from over watering or not watering enough, buy a water analyzer from a nursery or garden center. Be sure to read the directions. This will be one of your best tools.

Send for some free gardening catalogs and get use to the different types of plants, colors, and when to plant. They are filled with good informtion and pictures. And they will keep you company during the long winter months. Here is a list of just a very few. There are hundreds more:

http://www.waysidegardens.com
http://www.dutchbulbs.com
http://www.jacksonandperkins.com (Roses)
http://www.parkseed.com (vegetables and flowers)
http://www.burpee.com (vegetables and flowers)

Other catalogs:
http://www.leevalley.com
http://www.gardeners.com
http://www.GardensAlive.com (pests and insects)
http://www.deerbusters.com (all types of animal control)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can grow vegetables in large containers too.
All need holes in the bottem for water drainage,
Vegetable potting soil that comes in bags,
Slow release fertilizer for veggies, OR liquid fertilizer that will need to be used more often-read directions,
Water crystals to be mixed into the soil for holding water,
Bedding plants or full grown plants.
William asks…
I want to plant a flower garden im SE Missouri.?
I just need some help picking the best ones to stay around all spring and into fall… Are there any like that? Or you can just tell me some good flowers for SouthEast Missouri.
GardenersCardiff answers:
Checkout Springhill Nurseries. Their catalogs have “planned gardens” that are designed to compliment each other in color and bloom, with plants that bloom continually with plants that bloom at different times.
I don’t know if their website offers the same feature — but they’ll be more than happy to send you a catalog and a discount coupon.
These planned gardens — some for shade, some for sun, some for around a fence, next to the house, etc. Etc., will give you lots of info and inspiration. The catalog — as well as the site — will indicate the zone-hardiness for the plants they sell.
Your local garden center will also be helpful, as they will carry plants that are suitable for your locale.
Perennials will offer blooms only once, unfortunately. Annuals will continue to bloom through a season. The ideal is to create a garden with a mix of perennials and easy-to-deal-with annuals. The “exception” to this rule are roses. Hybrid bush roses will bloom intermittently from early summer to the first frost, but rarely will they have blooms continually.
All that aside, look into Columbines. They are billed as “biennials,” but are actually perennials — blooming their second or third year after planting from seed. You can get mature plants from the garden center, and they will reseed themselves, often creating offspring of unusual color. Generally, Columbines start blooming early-to-mid-May and continue through mid-to-late June. Columbines are beautiful, graceful, medium tall, and attract butterflies and humming birds, so I am always eager to suggest a gardener to get a few established in their yard.
Good luck and happy gardening.
ADDED: Laney made a good suggestion, but they are called Purple Cone Flowers, otherwise known as Echinacea. They are perennials, medium tall, and bloom from mid-summer to mid-to-late fall, so they do have a long blooming season. Another is bee balm. This is a perennial that spreads rapidly and comes in various purple to red flowers, is very aromatic, and true to its name, attracts bees and often hummingbirds. This also blooms from early-to-mid summer to late-fall. (Makes great potpourri also).
Sandra asks…
I want to start a garden in the spring….where do I start?
I live in SW Florida, if it makes a difference.
On a canal.
What are some basic steps to begin growing a garden?
GardenersCardiff answers:
Know what your zone is for one, and what will grow in that zone. You can get some free garden catalogs off the internet for ideas. Start off with the easier plants and read up on the various varieties. If there is an agricultural extension center in your county they have should have a Master Gardener to talk to and help you with advice.
Mark asks…
How tall can daffodils grow?
Does anyone know how tall daffodils can grow to?
And does anyone know how tall the tallest daffodil was/is?
GardenersCardiff answers:
Well, garden catalogues claim some bulbs grow up to 65cm
If you’re prepared to stake them for support-sure you could make them grow taller.
Last year some of my Lily bulbs which were advertised to grow to 55-60cm grew to about 110 cm’s.
You just need something to lean them against though !
Daffs get blown over by the wind quite easily, and as they seem to flower only at the top, I’m not sure what the advantage would be in havng taller ones….
I do wait till the sun goes down, and if my plant dont sprout back up next year ill go seeds, cause i did plant sunflowers from seeds adn there dooing greate
GardenersCardiff answers:
Lots of things can go wrong in a garden, including overfertilizing and overwatering, as the previous answerer stated.
You need to get your soil tested, to find out the pH and the amount of essential nutrients available. Check at stores that sell gardening supplies and they should be able to tell you how to get a test run. Here in Tennessee, the Univ. Of Tennessee has regional labs that handle it for about $ 6. It’s a bit late to help you out this summer, of course.
Plants don’t need watering every night. A good soaking once or twice a week is actually better for the plants.
Keep trying — gardening is a fun activity and you’ll have success sooner or later.
Helen asks…
Where can I buy fish emulsion?
I need it for my garden
GardenersCardiff answers:
Any place that sells garden supplies. It is a very popular form of fertilizer, Home Depot has it, but I’m gonna have to recommend your local garden supplier.
Brand new to gardening…Help!?
I am brand new to gardening. My husband rented a tiller and tilled up a spot to put our veggie garden. We bought seeds for bell peppers, sugar snap peas, tomatoes, cucumber, and yellow squash. I call my mother to tell her about it and she said we need to start it inside first, then move it outside to the garden. My hubby says we can plant the seeds directly in the garden. Can we? Any other advice to help our garden? Thanks!
GardenersCardiff answers:
Yes, you can plant outside once the weather has warmed. It is best to wait until the night temperatures are in the 60’s every night. We usually wait till the temps are between 68 and 70 degrees. Lots of people wait until after Mother’s Day to plant seeds. Your packets will have all the information on the back.
Joseph asks…
I Need a Gift Suggestion for…?
I would like recommendations for my favorite garden center employee.She’s great! She answer every question patiently and frankly,. I appreciate what she brings to the workplace. Of course, she has access to all types of plants and garden things so, I was wondering if you all would suggest something, please.
Thanks!
I meant to state she answers…thanks.
GardenersCardiff answers:
As a former garden center employee, I loved pretty scarves with flowers, tee shirts with garden themes and slogans, garden books, garden themed stationery, garden theme jewelry, unusual garden ornaments from places where I could never afford to shop. Garden theme aprons, a really good tool, an unusual flower pot. Lots of journals and interesting books about gardeners and gardening out there that would be good gifts.
Robert asks…
Gift for mom!?
I am making a gift basket for my mom. It has a gardening theme, and I was wondering what kind of unique things I could put in it. Like gloves, seeds, etc. Give lots of ideas plz!! Thank you so much!
GardenersCardiff answers:
I would get her some hand tools to go with the gloves and seeds. Also put some lotion for her hands and some sunscreen, as well as a hat. You may want to check at your local nursery and pick her up a gift certificate to get her started. Books and magazines are also a very good idea, as well as some pads for her knees — gardening can be pretty tough on the knees/body. Don’t forget the water bottle for her and a watering can for the plants.
Donald asks…
How To Plan Your Herb Garden?
GardenersCardiff answers:
Hi Sharon Salt,
This is Ricks Picks. I work in the Garden Department for The Home Depot. Thank you for your question about planting an herb garden. The “How to” part depends on where you are planning to put your garden, inside or outside. If you are in an area that freezes, then you will need to plant your herb garden inside in the brightest part of the house. The southern exposure is usually the brightest spot and is recommended for successful herb planting indoors. You can also use grow lights to supplement the lack of bright sunshine indoors.
Whether you are planting indoors or outdoors, you will want to use the right soil. For outdoor planting, you can use a garden soil. For indoor plants, you will need to use a potting soil. The big diffrence is that potting soil has perlite in it and garden soil does not. The perlite in the potting soil helps the plant breath better since all the sides of the pot are covered except for the top. Your local Home Depot carries several types of potting and garden soils, as do many other nursery supply stores. Check with you local store associate for more information.
One thing to be aware of if you plan on having your plants indoors is the window sill. If you do not have thermal windows, you herb plant could get too hot or too cold, depending on the weather outside. Glass can also magnifying the sunlite which can possibly burn your herb plant.
Regular watering will be the key to keeping your herbs alive inside. You will want the soil to be damp but not wet to the touch. The environment plays a key roll in how often you will water. If you have a low humidity location for your plants, they will require more water. Try not to have the plants in direct line of the heater vent. This will dry them out too quickly.
For planting outside, place your plants in a full sun area, this is usually in a south facing part of your property. Be sure to amend the herb garden with a good quality garden soil. Pre-place the plants on the ground before you actually dig the holes and plant them. This will give you a preview of what your herb garden will look like. If you do choose to move the plants around, it less stressful on the young plants. Once you are happy with the placement, it is time to dig into your amended soil and begin your herb garden. After you have your plants in the ground, water them in with a hose or watering can so that the soil around each plant will settle. Try not to bury the plant. The level of dirt around the plant in the pot should be the same on the ground, unless the roots are showing. You will need to make sure that the roots are covered.
If you are in an area that receives regular rain, you may not have to water your garden much. For the first week, you will need to water your plants once a day, unless it rains that day. Watering after that first week will depend on the weather. Regular weeding may also be necessary, although in the cooler weather the growth should have slowed some. Try to keep your garden soil damp but not wet. Keep an eye out for things like snails and slugs which love to eat the young tender plants. You can tell if there have been snails or slugs traversing your garden by looking out for that silvery slim on the ground first thing in the morning.
Other than a few precautionary checks for bugs, your herb garden should be in good shape. Be sure to take some before and after pictures of your garden and send them in. Have a happy holiday.
cheapest gardening shop?
GardenersCardiff answers:
Local garden centres are probably best – otherwise http://www.diy-supplies.co.uk has plenty of gardening and outdoor equipment. It allows you to search all the major household DIY and garden retailers (like Wickes, B&Q, Robert Dyas) and loads of gardening shops using one search.
Helen asks…
Who likes gardening and houseplants?
What’s your favorite thing to grow in your garden? What’s your favorite houseplant?
GardenersCardiff answers:
I love gardening, indoor and outdoor. I don’t care for the heat so in the hot months I garden outdoors very early or some times very late. I have been known to put flood lights on so I can do some gardening in the cool of the evening. This fall I’m enrolling in a master gardening class so I can do an even better job. I read something interesting about natural eco systems which has somewhat changed my style of gardening. There are less destructive insects in a natural forest because of the plant diversity. It seems that some plants actually attract beneficial insects which protect the area from those greedy flower and plant eating bugs. Lots more to know I’m sure. I can’t wait for each day to see how my plants are doing and love taking care of them. Gardening is an act of faith. You put in a seed or a little plant and hope and pray that your work turns out well.
Pests in garden?
This is my first year gardening. I started to late.
I turned my flower bed into a veggie garden for the time being.
I have loads of ants in my garden and there eating some of my plants any ideas?
GardenersCardiff answers:
I, too, was late in starting my garden this year, as we just moved to this house, and I’m going to try for a fall veggie garden. I know that if I start preparing the beds now, my spring garden will be great! As will yours…
As for ants, try an assortment of natural remedies before you go chemical, if you can. Here is a link that has just gobs of ideas.
The best way I’ve found is to follow the Texas Two-Step method. No, it’s not a dance step, but something the Texas A&M came up with…an organic way of ridding your yard/lawn/garden of ants. You start with Green Light Fire Ant Killer with Spinosad, and follow up with Orange Guard.
Here is the link: (I’ve seen it at Wally World) http://www.cleanairgardening.com/fireants.html
Happy Gardening!
James asks…
Vegetable Garden books??
What is the best book you have found on Vegetable Gardening?
GardenersCardiff answers:
“Sunset Magazine” puts out some really cool, user friendly garden books including a real nifty veggie series. By user friendly, not only do the speak english that we can understand with color pictures and detailed diagrams, but the printed them with materials that allow you to carry them out into the garden with you. They clean up real nice if you get mud and garden crud on them. Any thing short of putting them underwater won’t hurt them. It’s cool to have your answer book right out in the garden with you.
Mary asks…
Garden railway/Garden?
Live in the suburbs of city and have a acre lot and about half an acre to landscape myself, any websites i can look at to get a idea of what to make outa my backyard? Looking to make garden with garden railway.
GardenersCardiff answers:
The “Do It Yourself Network” has ideas. Besides “Landscape”, use other search terms (gardening, walkways, pool, fountains….) to find more. I noticed on the HopePage, they had a link for “water walkway” — sounds interesting, but didn’t check it out.
Http://www.diynetwork.com/
Also, the public library and home improvement center [i.e., Lowe’s, Home Depot] have books and magazines you can skim through — buy/borrow or not.
Like DIYnetwork, there are also a lot of TV programs on gardening & landscaping — discovery, TLC channels … They are really interesting.
This site does Landscapes (and has a search box). There’s a link on it’s HomePage (currently) on “yards and gardens”.
Http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh
These sites offer ideas:
http://www.bechtelslandscape.com/landscape-ideas.shtml
http://www.landscapegardeningonline.com/
http://www.gardenrailway.org.uk/
This site looks like it may be REAL helpful:
http://www.the-landscape-design-site.com/landscapedesign5.html
Do a search for “landscape ideas” (and use other terms) in your browser. Search for “parts” of landscaping (like pools, rock, cement structiures/statues, patio furniture, decks…). The results listed usually have their products set in gardens and yards — and you can get ideas. Like this site (check out the links (buttons) across the top):
http://www.bridgewaterlandscape.com/
And, search famous gardens (like botanical gardens … Like Marie Selby Botanical Garden, Sarasota FL), if you know of any, and look at their settings for ideas.
Peace. Have fun!!!!!
Chris asks…
GardenersCardiff answers:
It’s a great magazine although there aren’t many beauty tips in it, just mostly about home and garden and they have wonderful recipes. It’s worth the money to subscribe instead of buying off the stand. I know you must be excited about getting your own place, Good Luck!
