I’ve never grown herbs before but we’ve got this nifty garden window in the kitchen and I want to grow basil, cillantro, oregano, maybe some thyme. First off, are these herbs compatible to grow in close proximity? Secondly, how difficult is it to grow my own garlic? And lastly, can I grow garlic near these herbs in the same garden window?
All these herbs are compatible but put them in different pots or they’ll try to compete one another out of existence. Garlic is pretty easy to grow but it doesn’t seem to taste as strong as supermarket garlic. Just start with one clove and it will sprout green onion-like stalks out the pointy end.

What I know about gardening could be written several times on a postage stamp, but as I buy a LOT of salad and have just got access to a greenhouse I was wondering how difficult it would be to grow my own, my plan is to grow:
Tomatoes (standard + sweet plum),
Spinach,
Rocket,
Lettuce(Iceberg & cos),
Watercress,
Radish,
Potatoes,
Onion(standard & spring).
The greenhouse is a fair size can be heated, any advice would be welcomed.
Watercress = so easy you could do it blindfolded….. Stick the seeds in a small tub with a thin layer of soil, add a wee bit of water, and hey presto…….
Potatoes = Probably the most idiot-proof vegetable you can grow…. Stick them in some dirt, leave them to grow, and a while later they’ll have turned into even more potatoes.
In the past I’ve left shop bought bags of them in the cupboard under the sink, then weeks later found several feet of potato roots wrapped round the wastepipe.
Lettuce = can be a little bit tricky………. Slugs & snails will drive you insane trying to keep the damn things from munching them.
Tomatoes = medium hard…… Buy part grown plants from a Garden centre, stick them in growbags in the greenhouse, requires a bit handywork with some string to train them to grow in the right direction……….. Require regular watering (use a watering can, and count to 6)……. May require you having to paint the outside glass of the greenhouse with a special white solar control paint in the brightest part of the summer to stop them getting scorched.
Spinach, Rocket + Radish = don’t know
Onions = can be a bit tricky
To make things easier, get a copy of “The Vegetable & Herb Expert” by Dr D.G. Hesayon (£3.99)
and it’ll fill you in with everything you need to know (e.g. What varieties to plant, common pests, etc)

I live in an inner city appartment with limited window space and no back yard. I want to supplement my groceries by growing my own produce, from tomatoes to zucchini, lettuce, eggplants as well as herbs indoors.
Does anyone know any plug and play solutions available on the market. Ive heard of Aerogarden.
Also do you have an idea of the best composting solution.

I want to make a potted herb garden for a Christmas gift for my dad. He loves cooking and all, and I’d like to make it with the following herbs
-Cilantro
-Basil
-Rosemary
-Oregano
-Parsley
-Tarragon or thyme
Can these herbs be store bought as clippings and planted directly in soil? I’ve heard of just using a clipping of a mature plant and letting it grow in the soil. Is it possible for these herbs? Do I have to get seeds or buy plants?
That would be a wonderful gift. If he has a window in the kitchen, it would be a perfect place for a herb garden.
Stores do not sell clippings. So buy the plants already growing in small pots. OR you can plant seeds in pots, keep moist not wet until you see the green appear.
OR give your dad pots that match, GOOD potting soil, and the seeds. Let him grow his own.
Take a look at this (but I am sure you can buy this locally at stores such as Home Depot or Lowes, at gardening centers and nurseries:

She is a teacher – but retiring this year.
She LOVES gardening ( but i dont know anything about gardening so i have no idea of what to get her in that department )
I want to spend around 20/25 dollars.
ANY ideas? it doesnt have to do with gardeneing – it could be anything.
A gift card for a gardening place, or for a place she likes to eat.

I have a friend I work with that was recently promoted to being a manager of a team. I am looked for good suggestions for some gifts for her. They must travel well – wither through mail or via air travel as I will be visiting her next week.
Money plant and a card
flowers
maybe a zen garden
maybe a travel book or any sort of book that can help pass time on a plane or waiting in line!
Maybe make a collage of the old friend in old job and then show the improvement!
Ask them what they need and get them that!
Out of suggestions now !
Good luck
and tell your friend Kudo’s
