Helen asks…

It is going to get freezing this weekend. What is best to cover new plants: sheets ( fabric ) or plastic?

Gardening tips

GardenersCardiff answers:

Depending on how tall the plant is… Low lying plants can take the plastic with bricks or rocks holding it down around the plants. If they are taller plants like foot-tall tomato plants
(shame on you for planting this early, lol), then the absolute best thing I have found to use is upside down turned plant pots placed over top of the plants (screw into the soil about 1/8th or 1/2 inch deep so that no air gets in around the base. I have also used empty milk jugs with the lids and most of the top cut off. Just set over top of plants and push into soil a little bit. If your plants are too tall already and you don’t have any empty containers big enough to comfortably hold the plant inside, most veggie and flower plants can stand a little stress (by cramming them (just LIL bit) into the pot). The right kind of Stress actually makes most plants stronger and more resilient to future stresses and/or diseases. Hope this helps.

Betty asks…

I need help with my garden, how do I start by getting rid of weeds without chemicals?

I want to plant fruits and veggies, and I wanna to do it without chemicals. How do I do this? Please share your own garden tips too!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well unfortunatly weeds come with gardening, but that is the fun of it! The only way to get rid of weeds without using a chemical will be the following:
1. Rent a “tiller” ffrom home depot and “tear up” the earth and “mix” the soil.
2. Pull the weeds by hand.
A good way to help prevent weeds from coming back is to make sure you add a good ground cover such as mulch, this makes it harder for the weeds to get light and grow.
Good luck.

Joseph asks…

Mary asks…

How can I overcome my fear of gardening?

I tried to get into the hobby of gardening recently. I loved it until one day in my garden after removing weeds I saw the soil move by itself! I’m very superstitious and I fear that my house has being built on an ancient burial ground. I’m very scarred to go out into the garden now and I’m afraid something terrible will happen such as zombies. It makes it hard to sleep at night. I’m being very serious, how can I overcome this?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Sounds like you disturbed an earthworm or some other (very normal/natural) critter in the soil. Best advice is to just get back out there & get to know your local plants & animals. Get back in the saddle, so to speak.

James asks…

How can I protect myself and daughter while gardening in the yard?

Besides insect repellent lotions or sprays. Is there anything further I should use to minimize insect bites? Mosquitoes are ramped in my area. And now that the weather is getting warmer, I’d like to some pruning and gardening. Is there anything additional I should do to protect myself and dear daughter?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Even if it’s a little warm, you would be more protected by wearing long-sleeve shirts and jeans instead of shorts. Also, to protect yourselves from the sun, wear gardening hats to shade your face and head. If you’re gardening, it’s always a good idea to wear gardening gloves. You might also want to not garden during the hottest part of the day, when mosquitoes are more lkely to bite.
