Mary asks…

Looking for work as a Garden Maintenance person?

I have my own transit van and Garden tools, ie Grass cutter, chain saw, hedge trimmer, and leaflets

I don’t have a website, as I can’t afford it at the moment.

I hand posted about 4000 leaflets In the Hertfordshire areas
and I received only about 10 calls.
What am i doing wrong ?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try being proactive also by driving/walking past different homes and looking in the property where possible. A lot of properties have loads of junk piled up in their yard or other major issues that you might spot that should be repaired. Take notes and the address and return to make a flyer that targets those issues or better yet knock on the door and maybe negotiate a deal (depending on how good a salesman you are 🙂

I’m not sure how it works there but maybe inquire at the local council if they have tenders or any public works available (they should be supporting their local business). Join the Chamber of Commerce if you have that in Britain and see if you can network there as there is usually some council members that attend meetings.

Also advertise in your local paper (usually not that expensive) and leave your brochures on notice boards where ever you can (libraries, townhall, schools, pub etc etc).

You could maybe have a promo where if your client recommends you to someone else whom gives you a job you provide a discount to both or just provide a 10% discount to every first time customer. Not sure if these are practical ideas but they might work.

Good luck

Ken asks…

How do I check irregular items at the museum?

I was helping a volunteer organization downtown planting a vegetable garden. I was able to take a shower at my friend’s house nearby. I had brought my own equipment and couldn’t keep it at my friends house. Anyhow, I decided to visit the history museum before going home. I was able to check my bag and my jacket, but not my gardening tools. So, I guess my question is: How do I get these hoes in check?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Find or buy a nylon or canvas bag with a draw string or snaps or get any reasonable container into which the garden tools would fit and put your garden tools into the bag, then, check the bag. Now, if the tools have long handles, you should still be okay as long as the “business end” of the tool is completely in the bag. You could even attach a name tag to your bag of hoes if you want.

Mandy asks…

what’s the best way to rid garden tools of poison ivy?

I know I got poison ivy and the oil may still be on my tools. How do I get rid of it for sure? I can not become reinfected! My wedding is in 4 weeks.

GardenersCardiff answers:

First of all rinse your tools with copious amounts of cold water; then take a solution of bleach ratio: 1 part bleach-9 parts water. Then pat them dry. I’d keep some Cort-Aid or Tech-Nu around just in case you inadvertently contact it unaware. The volatile oil is called urushiol and is very potent. I just petted my dog, then touched my face when I was getting hair out of my eyes–and consequently, looked like a leper for three weeks. If you are especially sensitive just washing with soap and water may not do the trick. And whatever you do make sure it’s cold water–hot water causes the oil to disperse into the pores of your skin.

Mark asks…

What to do to prep for spring gardening in the fall?

I live in the midwest and would like to know what I can do now for preparing next springs gardening. Would it be wise to dig up areas now for planting in spring? Also, what perennials are good for Wisconsin?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I now live in St. Louis, but lived in Minnesota for 5 years, and whatever you are going to do you should have a plan executed by the endof October! I would stake out the area(s) you can use pegs and string, remove all grass(It’s just a thing I have about it coming back) and til the areas, dig at least 6-8 inches down, and loosen the dirt really well. Don’t worry about lumps and all, you can let the area sit over the winter, the gorund will be ready to plant in Spring.
My zone for planting in StL is 5, and I know you can plant alot of things under zone 5. You will want to watch your areas for amount of sun and shade as most perennials are pretty particular to those specifics. Full sun means at least 6 hours….part sun is anything less than that. You can spend the winter planning your flowers so you don’t “impulse” buy! You can plan your colors, heights, textures, and blooming times. It would be fun to draw it out on paper. There are alot of gardening sites and plant shopping sites that have great info. Some of your plants can be ordered on line and you can save money and time. This may be alot more than what you were wanting to do, and you can modify it. The most important thing for success is knowing your plants and that comes from research.
I have had to do alot of plants trial and error. Although the plant is zoned for your area sometimes they just don’t do well, so be patient, gardening is just that “trial and error” Good luck and have fun

Lizzie asks…

How do you go about finding a gardening club to join?

I am pretty new to the world of gardening, and I’d love to join a group where I can learn from fellow gardeners and get together, etc…the only problem is that I haven’t a clue as to how to go about finding such a group. I live in Scranton, PA. I’ve googled it every way I could think of and have come up empty.

Any ideas for me? Thanks.

The very best gardening club is the Master Gardeners. This link below will connect you to the closest chapter. These folks are serious gardeners who want to help other learn about gardening.

Paul asks…

What should I get for my gardening grandfather for Christmas?

I’ve bought for everyone but my grandfather. He’s 82 and loves gardening and water gardening. Usually, I get him a bird feeder (he loves bird watching) or something that has to do with hummingbirds. This year I’m at a loss. I’m a first year teacher on my own and on a very limited budget. Any ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Get a flower pot and fill it with accessories for gardening and wrap it like you would if it was a gift basket.

*things to fill the flower pot with; soil, gardening tools, flower/plant seeds)

Cany anyone tell me how to sharpen my garden tools?

I am looking for a way to sharpen garden tools (shovel, shears, loppers, lawnmower blade, ect). I have heard this is a good thing to do but am having a hard time finding any good sources of information. Thanks for any tips!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Matt:

Your question covers a great deal of area. The diversity of garden tools is unbelievable but I will offer a few comments.

Sharpening any tool, garden or otherwise, is a process of reestablishing the factory shape and cutting edge. A few GOOD files (don’t skimp on files, cheap files are just that) are essential. A midsized vice of reasonable quality will make life a lot easier. A nice but not necessary item is a midsized midcost grinder. A six inch grinder will do a fine job on damaged tools providing they are salvageable. All that remains is some elbow grease and patience.

Sharpening powered tools like chainsaw chains, hedge trimmer and so forth can be a bit tricky. Some hands on instruction would be very helpful in this area. Some items in the power catagory likes mower blades are doable by weekend gardners. A balance checker, usually available where mowers and mower parts are sold, is important. Keeping the blade balanced is important to safety and to the life expectancy of your mower engine. I do mower blades with a file. Some use a grinder, I think it’s a matter of personal preferance and perhaps speed required by professional sharpenes.

I did a Yahoo search, “How to sharpen garden tools”. I received several hits for books and magazine articles. Take a look at the book rack in a home improvement center. You might find something there.

Last thought: You are, of course, free to spend your money as you see fit but I wouldn’t spend any of my money on any of the cheap sharpeners. Sharpening tools just has too many variables to make any of them get my money.

If you care to discuss a particular tool, contact me through my profile and I’ll do my best to help.

Sandy asks…

Where Can I get a Voucher for a Garden Tools shop in Athens?

Friends of mine have brought a house near Athens, and I would like to get them a voucher to buy garden tools. Can anybody advise me.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The only thing I can think of is to ring Tourist Information on +210 0606 8800 and ask them…..or ask them to look up a number for Garden Centres, Plant Sales or Nurseries in the area and go from there. Hope this helps 🙂

Daniel asks…

who can supply some gardening tools purchaser to me ?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I went to the local KMart today and saw most of the gardening tools marked down 50%. That normally doesn’t happen until Labor Day weekend, when garden and outdoor supplies are marked down. I got more planters, more hummingbird feeders and a few seeds for next spring.

So…go check out your local KMart and see if you can grab a few bargains.

Helen asks…

What are the essential tools for a beginning gardener?

I have a friend who is wanting to start gardening in her bare backyard. Her birthday is coming up and I want to put together a little package of essential gardening tools. I don’t know anything about gardening myself, so please help!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I am a long time gardener, and I own a variety of tools, each does a specific job. If your friend is going to plant roses or shrubs, a pair of hand pruners would be welcome (about $12).

A shovel is great (I only use short handled ones, I like that type best). $8 – $15

Small tools like a trowel and a hand hoe are nice (I never use a big hoe,it’s too much work). $5 – 10

And gloves. Nice, leather gloves, the thinner the better ($10).

A metal rake, the kind for moving soil or small rocks as opposed to the floppy leaf rake. I love to use a heavy rake to smooth out planting beds. $8 – 12

A good book on gardening, preferably organic gardening would be the best gift of all. $20

There are some excellent gardening forums in cyber land too, with people who have all sorts of know how.

If you shop around, you might find very cheap garden tools as stores tend to try to get rid of all that stuff by the end of summer.

I can garden anywhere with gloves, a shovel, a rake and a trowel. I can only prune things if I have snips, so those are the basics, for me (been gardening a long, long time).

Donna asks…

can recomend gardening tools which brand are good?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Michael asks…

Which gardening tool to use for pulling weeds?

I have three tools: Jimmy, age 9, good at PE and lunch in school, my husband Terry, 43, good for nothing except after the annual Christmas party when he’s good for 8 minutes, and Jenny, age 16, going on 23, good at doing her hair for 2 hours prior to going to school in the morning.

They are all tools, which is best to use in eradicating weeds from my tulip bed?
But Drizzt, my husband can probably do it in 8 minutes. It just wouldn’t be thorough.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Use them all, but be delicate:

Terry – liquor him up and have him pull weeds at a fever pitch for 8 minutes, the let him lie in the garden to sleep it off.

Jimmy next – bury a grilled cheese sandwich in the dirt and he’ll basically till your garden looking for it.

Jenny – have her tell the neighborhood boys that the first one to remove all the weeds gets to cop a feel on her.

You will have zero weeds left after this phase 3 deployment of your tools.

George asks…

Gardening Tools have been have been robbed on several occasions, yesterday Garage brken into???

WE’re so tired ot it. Now they stole our tools again and this time they stole them out of the locked garage. They broke the piece of metal that held the Lock.

And we are all asleep here at 10:00pm or by 12:00pm.. so they usually come at 2 , 3 or 4 i guess.

What can we do to stop these crooks?? Last time we called the police, this time too. But they keep coming. And it’s been like a year since we got robbed the last time. SO it’s kind of impossible to know when they are going to try it again. I could stay up all night and never sleep and check.. but that’s unrealistic.

What can we do?

WE’re not rich actually. There’s many semi wealthy Americans around this neighborhood, but we are hispanic and my father does labor ( gardening).. but they always steal his expensive gardening tools. So today we have to spend 500 Plus to buy gardening equipment just so we can do the job.

aaaarrgh.. why us? what can we do? Now the garage door will be open cause the lock mechanism is broken

GardenersCardiff answers:

Get a securiy video system they are cheap. And you can monitor it from any pc in the world. Here’s a direct link to some on ebay.

William asks…

what are the 15 basic tools for gardening. give its importance and pictures?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My basic tools are much fewer than 15.

One Spade
One hand trowel
One garden fork
A Wheelbarrow
A leaf rake
Good hand pruners
Lopers – for the stuff too big for hand pruners

Anything else is a luxury.

Paul asks…

Do i need more Gardening Tools?

I bought a hoe, rake, trowel, hand cultivator, and i have a shovel. Do i have to get a Garden Fork also or will that stuff suffice?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes, you should have a spading fork, and a good spade. Spading forks are handy for turning compost, because you can aerate the pile as you turn it by bouncing clods on the tines to break them up. They’re also handy for opening up the lower layer of soil, when you deep-dig or plant trees or large shrubs. Look for a fork with square tines that taper to a point. Most garden forks have flat tines, and don’t work as well because they’re weaker and they bend.

A garden spade is handy for cutting earth and framing beds, for stripping turf, and for flattening an area for a new terrace. The blade is heavier duty, and flatter, than a round-nosed shovel. It cuts a flat track, instead of scallop-shaped divots.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Plastic boxes are great

Lizzie asks…

What do these gardening tools mean to You.?

Spade and a Hoe.
Sorry, I put this in the wrong category by mistake.

GardenersCardiff answers:

A vegetable garden so I can feed myself.
A levelling tool to sow grass and improve the value of my home.
A gardening tool so as to improve the value of my home.
A sanitation tool so as to dig a long drop toilet in emergencies.
A fencing tool so as to put in fence posts so as to identify boundaries around your property.
Tools that all decent, civilised societies used to develop their infrastructure and develop their nations.
Those simple tools are the foundations of all decent societies. I salute the spade and hoe.

James asks…

What do I make to store my garden tools?

I have 5-6 long handles gardening tools. I need to hang them or make a covered box for them outside, I don’t want to store them outside w/out protection. Not much room in the garage. Any clever ideas out there?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You could make a simple box long enough to hold your gardening tools with a hinged lid. Finish this off with a back on it and convert it to a bench. I would put a few holes in the bottom for drainage of moisture. If you do make it, try to make the lid for the box wider and longer than the box itself so any rain would run off of it and not into it.

Good luck hope it helps
