gardening zone – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-496/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-496/#respond Wed, 10 Jul 2013 12:05:03 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-496/

Chris asks…

What is the best or worst thing about your garden zone?

Also if you could change your zone which would that be? And why?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think the best thing about my gardening zone is the weather. Living in So. Cal., we can grow things pretty much year round and don’t have to move plants inside or cover them in the Winter or worry about the snow and cold killing them. Having said that, though, the soil in my area is basically like clay — very hard and difficult to dig. And like a previous respondent said, weeds run amok. I can pull them one day, and when I go back outside the next day, there are new ones already growing!

If I could change my zone, I think I might choose Zone 1. At certain times of the year, it would be SO cold there that nothing could possibly grow, so I’d just pack up the gardening gloves and enjoy the snow.

Maria asks…

We live in Winnipeg MB, gardening Hardiness Zone 3a. We are planting perennial Mum plants this fall.?

Are wondering how we winterize these e.g. Cut the plants down to ground level etc.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Perennial mums are zoned for zone 3-9. Although it really depends on the cultivar as to its hardiness.
Florist Mums are not as hardy as others.

Mulch them and create a microclimate to shelter them from winter winds. If you can’t plant them on the south side of your house, build a modified version of the shrub shelters used for winter protection. You can build shrub shelters out of natural materials.
Or you can build an A-frame (or “snow frame”) out of store-bought lumber. Don’t prune in fall: existing branches offer the roots protection.
Prune in Spring.

Sandra asks…

How do you get through the garden zone in Kirby : superstar ultra for ds?

It’s the last zone of the great cave offensive and I need a full description of how to clear the it.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Its either this one if not just keep watching ^^

John asks…

When is it safe to plant veggies in Gardening Zone 5?

My father always told me not to plant before Memorial Day weekend. I noticed the newly published gardening zone changes though so I was wondering if it might be safe to plant a bit earlier then people used to? According to the new zoning, we are located on the borderline of zones 5a and 5b. I have peas, cucumber, zuchinni, summer squash, hot pepper, green bell pepper, and pumpkin seedlings growing in the sun porch. I am wondering when is the earliest it would be safe to transplant them into the garden which is getting rototilled today? I also want to buy some tomato and more pepper plants to put out there when the time comes too.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I live in zone 5.

I have had some garden plants in the ground since mid March (radishes, lettuce, potatoes, carrots etc.)

My tomatoes (still protected) have been in the ground since mid April.

Of course you can lose some plants to frost if you are not careful….. But if you wait until nearly June to plant tomatoes… It will be late July before you have any ripe tomatoes.

Planting by the calendar, in exactly the same way every year… Is silly. If you have night temperatures approaching 50 degrees consistently… You can plant tomatoes and peppers. You can plant things like lettuce and spinach much earlier…. They can get snowed on and still come out fine (they actually LIKE cold nights… And tolerate temps down into the upper 20’s if it only lasts a few hours).

Joseph asks…

What plants would help to repel wasps?

I live in gardening zones either 5 or 6, it’s very dry here, gets hot in the summer and cold with lots of snow in the winter. What plant would be ideal for deterring wasps?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t know of any plants. I hang glass wasp traps (or you can make your own but the glass ones are really pretty) I bait mine with fermented honey and water, but you can use jam or fruit juice. If you get the traps out early and keep them going all summer, you may be able to keep them from nesting too close to your house. Also, if you see them coming and going from holes in the ground, you can cut plastic 12-ounce water bottles in half and screw the halves into the ground over each hole. Your yard will look like a bubble garden but the wasps will all be gone in a few days. The glass tops from big Yankee candles are also good for this.

Donna asks…

Can anyone tell what zone 10 means, in gardening terms.?

I want to grow a Brunelsia pauciflora but would like to know more about the conditions needed. Thank you.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The Brunfelsia pauciflora originates in Brazil and Peru. This means that they flourish in a tropical climate. They can stand a temperature of 50 degrees F in the winter and survive at
41 degrees F for short periods. They like a moist atmosphere and being well watered in the summer but must be shaded from hot sun.In the winter they should be kept fairly dry. In Zone 10 the winter temperatures can go to 22 degrees F with the lowest recorded temperatur around 6 degrees F.
The zones 13, 15-17and 20-24 are suitable for Brunfelsias.

Ken asks…

GArdening help, what zone, etc??

I am in Haliburton, Ontario- what gardening zone would I be in?

I bought some pansies (about 32 4-packs), for the front of my house. When can they be planted safely?
I also bought a pack of 65 bulbs for spring planting, summer blooming- says its a garden in a bag… heres whats in it

-20 glad bulbs
-12 sparaxis
-3 dahlias
-12 acidantheras
-8 iris
-10 anemones

What I wanted to do is plant the pansies in the front of my flower bed, and plant the bulbs in the back, so when the pansies fade with the hot weather, the bulbs will be grown and flowering. The area I am working with is 14″ wide, 10 feet long, then another of the same area on the other side of our front steps. I want to plant the dahlias in a large pot on our front steps, since we don’t use the front door.
DO you think this will work, and do you have any further ideas for me to work with (placement of the bulbs, etc)… I just want colour in front of our boring bland white house!!!

GardenersCardiff answers:

This map will help you figure out what gardening zone you’re in: http://www.thegardenhelper.com/hardiness.htm

Your plan sounds like a good one. I like the idea of planting both annuals and bulbs. Watch the height of your plants and be sure to put the smaller plants (usually anemones) in front of the taller ones (such as glads).

I haven’t tried planting bulbs in spring for summer blooms. I plant bulbs for spring color (we now have daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips in bloom), then rely on annuals and perennials for the rest of the season.

Have fun!

“Jerry Baker, America’s Master Gardener” is one of my favorite gardening websites. One of the things you can find out on the site is what your gardening zone is based on your zip code. Here is a link to the page:

Good luck with your gardening.

Chris asks…

What are some of your favorite gardening blogs?

I am a college student majoring in Environmental Studies, and I just recently started to become interested in small-scale food production. My university has an amazing community garden where I have a small plot. I’d love to find a good gardening blog that will help me along as I attempt to care for this super small but awesome garden. Do you guys have any favorites? (My zone is 8B, by the way.)

GardenersCardiff answers:

I’ve been growing food organically in the San Francisco bay area (zone 9b) for 26 years, and I’m putting everything I’ve learned about organic gardening into a web site, http://www.grow-it-organically.com

Organic gardening is about feeding the soil to feed the plants, and growing robust vegetables that can fight off pests and still produce high yields.

Pictures on the site are from my garden. Some pages you might find useful:

Sharon asks…

Can wild orange lilies grow in a container? I live in Ontario, in the zone 5 gardening region?

Do they require shade? Full sun?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I live in 5b gardening zone.in mid-central Ohio

here the wild orange day lily grows up to 36 to 48 inches tall. They can grow in a container but as Cat wrote it needs to be quite large perhaps on the order of 2 to 21/2 feet deep

there are a bunch of faux planters on the market (made from resin covered foam) which would fit your needs and not wreck your back when moving them.

Mark asks…

Where can I find a gardening chart for Northeast Mississippi, zone 7?

I’ve just got into gardening, I was wanting a graph or information on when to plant things. I really like vegatable gardens. I was thinking about starting a winter garden, I just don’t know where to start. I’ll be really greatful for any help.

GardenersCardiff answers:

This question has gone six days without an answer. Here is my favorite gardening website:

http://www.gardenguides.com/

There are hundreds of thousands of websites devoted to gardening. A Yahoo search for “southern gardening” (include the quotation marks) and other similarly worded searches will turn up more site than you care to explore.

Good luck with your search.

Interesting to click the link that says “See changes from 1990 to 2006”. Most maps show the zones using 1990 info. This one is the only one updated.

Gardening Help! ~ Looking for perennials for Zones 8a ~ 8b.?

I soooo do not have a green thumb! I don’t even have a yellow thumb…

However, I do have a spot in the front of my house that is absolutely screaming for some flowers and I’m determined that Gardening is going to be on my list of 2008 resolutions…

So, what I need…
I am looking for good cutting flowers; Iris, Daffodil, Tulip or the like for a space that gets ALOT of direct sunlight. Drainage is fair but can be improved. I would prefer, to begin with, not to have to deal with bulbs that have to be dug-up every year.

I have asked around at several of the local gardening centers and haven’t really found anyone who could adequately answer my questions.

I live right on the edge of Zones 8a & 8b, or more to the point, on the very eastern edge of Williamson County, TX. About 20 miles northeast of Austin.

Thanks!

Ken asks…

Why is Halifax NS half a gardening zone milder than Kingston Ontario?

Rhodos will grow in Halifax but not in Kingston, Ontario. Southern Ontario seems milder than Halifax yet Halifax is doomed to be half a gardening zone better.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Probably because Halifax and NS is situated close to the Gulf Stream.

May be the soil pH is incapable of supporting Rhododendrons.
They being an ericacious plant require acidic soils, below a pH4.

As I am located in Old Scotia [Scotland] I do not have any real experience on Ontario soils or climate.

Daniel asks…

I live in Gardening Zone 5. Can you tell me the best time to trim my cedars?

GardenersCardiff answers:

The only time I wouldn’t is from about Aug. 1st. – Christmas. Any other time is fine. They will store winter hardiness by processes going on in the foliage in late summer- fall. Also, pruning encourages carbohydrates upward into the top of the plant. Plants going into winter need to be moving carbohydrates downward into the roots.

Ruth asks…

Referring to gardening and plants, what is a zone and what zone am I in?

When planning for my garden/front lawn, I hear a lot about zone’s…I think it has to do with what plants can be grown in certain zones, but I don’t know for sure.

Can anyone tell me what zones are and what zone am I in? I live in central Ontario, just north of Toronto. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

A ‘zone’ is a number with the smaller numbers being more tropical (near or on the equator) and they get higher the farther north you go. These numbers are given when purchasing plants, to tell you whether the plant will grow well in the zone you live in. To find your gardening zone, you can do a search for your area, or the closest large city. Then do a second search to find the plants that will do well in your zone. There is another way to find out which plants will do well, though … Take a walk around your neighborhood and talk to the gardeners you’ll see … Because I have yet to meet a gardener who wouldn’t share everything they know with someone who is truly curious, and who wants to become a good gardener. I know … I am a long time gardener who now lives in a different state … I take walks, not look on the internet, because my neighbors are the best at what grows well here!

Charles asks…

What is the gardening zone of Boulder, Co?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Apparently, due to the “warming trend” AKA global warming, the zones have been updated. You can find your precise gardening zone for heat tolerance at the American Horticulture Society website (http://www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_finder.htm) using your zip code. As well, the Colorado State University website contains some info as well (http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Garden/zones.htm). HGTV also has some information about this subject (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gl_seasonal_zones/article/0,,HGTV_3631_1399487,00.html). Good luck!

Sandy asks…

Is there any way to know what gardening zone folks live in when they as a queston??

so many people have so many questions about gardening but the answers depend upon what gardening zone they live in. In even more detail what part of what state. I would like to reply to a lot of these questions but if they don’t live in a zone that I am famillar with my reply is useless. Any way to find out???

GardenersCardiff answers:

The only way is if they tell you. You could e-mail them or IM them if they have that option on their answers Q&A page. You could also tell them the answer in a couple different paragraphs for different zones.
If they don’t have the e-mail or IM options, and you don’t want to go into detail for different gardening zones, you could ask in your answer what zone they live in, add the question to your watch list and go back and check to see if they added their zone to the question. 🙂

Mandy asks…

I live in Gardening Zone 8 and i want to move some banana plants (1 foot tall) into my yard ?

Should I wait to buy and move them until spring or should i go ahead and do it now?? I am very anxious to plant some .
– I live in Dallas. Would they die over the winter?
Any other banana growing/soil/sunlight/watering tips????
THANKS

GardenersCardiff answers:

One thing to consider when planting banana plants: Dig a comfortable square, 2-3 ft X 2-3 ft., min. 1 ft deep, to be able to work in. Plant the plants, one plant per hole in the hole.
Banana plants grow lots of surface roots and the following generations will be shallower and shallower. That is what the hole is for: You fill in a layer of dirt every year or according to new shoots, so there is enough soil around the roots. Otherwise the plants will be falling all over the place.

James asks…

What is my gardening zone in Weber (Ogden) UT?

I have been searching for the correct zone (zip 84405) and I seem to get differnt answers every time.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think you are in zone 6. But in any case, you may have variations based on microclimates on your property – local topography, windbreaks, ponds, a hill, etc.
