Helen asks…

Who likes gardening and houseplants?

What’s your favorite thing to grow in your garden? What’s your favorite houseplant?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I love gardening, indoor and outdoor. I don’t care for the heat so in the hot months I garden outdoors very early or some times very late. I have been known to put flood lights on so I can do some gardening in the cool of the evening. This fall I’m enrolling in a master gardening class so I can do an even better job. I read something interesting about natural eco systems which has somewhat changed my style of gardening. There are less destructive insects in a natural forest because of the plant diversity. It seems that some plants actually attract beneficial insects which protect the area from those greedy flower and plant eating bugs. Lots more to know I’m sure. I can’t wait for each day to see how my plants are doing and love taking care of them. Gardening is an act of faith. You put in a seed or a little plant and hope and pray that your work turns out well.

What Are The Different Gardens Show Sites
My Mum Really Want The Garden Done So Thought I Would Look Up Sites To Submit And Try And Do Up My Mums

GardenersCardiff answers:

Take a good look at what you have available, and try and utilise that. I think gardens should develope naturally,ie. You alter to suit your own ideas, thoughts etc.

Happy gardening (I love gardening)

George asks…

Pests in garden?

This is my first year gardening. I started to late.

I turned my flower bed into a veggie garden for the time being.

I have loads of ants in my garden and there eating some of my plants any ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I, too, was late in starting my garden this year, as we just moved to this house, and I’m going to try for a fall veggie garden. I know that if I start preparing the beds now, my spring garden will be great! As will yours…

As for ants, try an assortment of natural remedies before you go chemical, if you can. Here is a link that has just gobs of ideas.

The best way I’ve found is to follow the Texas Two-Step method. No, it’s not a dance step, but something the Texas A&M came up with…an organic way of ridding your yard/lawn/garden of ants. You start with Green Light Fire Ant Killer with Spinosad, and follow up with Orange Guard.
Here is the link: (I’ve seen it at Wally World) http://www.cleanairgardening.com/fireants.html

Ruth asks…

where i can download “home and garden” magazine(pdf) or decoration magazine ?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most print magazines aren’t available for download like that. If they were, why would people actually buy them?

However, many magazine have their own websites with decorating tips & ideas in addition to the print version. Here are a couple:

Mary asks…

Herb garden?

I would love to grow my own fresh herbs and spices. Is it ok to grow them indoors or should I wait for the summer to start? Also any websites or books you can offer for suggestions would be most helpful. I live in an apartment with a balcony so growing one in a garden won’t do. Thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grew herbs on our balcony and in my bedroom window (it’s the only place that gets enough sun!)

I subscribe to a magazine called The Herb Companion. It’s a great source of information. The USDA has a web page with links about herb growing too.

Have fun!

Olive Garden gift cards?

does anyone know if they would have them at a local CVS? or Super stop and shop? because i want to try and get one for my parent for christmas :]

GardenersCardiff answers:

Seen them at Stop & Shop and other chain stores. You can buy Olive Garden Gift cards wherever gift cards are sold.

Paul asks…

Gardener’s Gift?

My husband loves to work in our garden, and I want to get him some type of gardening gift, but as I am not a gardener, I don’t know what would be good. He has all of the basic gardening tools, but I want to get him something fancy. What is a gift that would knock a gardener’s socks off? Also, what is an exotic flower that would grow well in the mid Atlantic region of the US?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well, I love to garden and I think the small greenhouses are just awesome for propogating plants. They are quite inexpensive and accomplish a lot! (see link below)

A butterfly bush would be nice; it has a long flowering season and produces plenty of seeds for more starter bushes to pass on as gifts to friends or to put in starter pots and sell at markets for a nice profit. It has tall, showy spikes of very fragrant blooms and tremendous butterfly-attracting ability. Hummingbirds love this plant also. To control, cut back flowers as they fade. (There are miniature varieties available.)

Linda asks…

Holiday Attire and White Elephant Gift?

Let me start off by asking what the hell is a White Elephant Gift exchange?

Ok so it’s a holiday party for the company that my significant other works at and it’s at a hilton garden inn and it’s suppose to be holiday attire…when you say holiday attire what does that mean to you? … and each couple of suppose to bring a white elephant gift….what’s a white elephant gift? and what would you get for a white elephant gift?

GardenersCardiff answers:

WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE

Traditionally, a “White Elephant” is something lying around the house that you don’t want (some horridly ugly item that someone gave you as a gift or some other item unwanted for some reason). I am of the belief that in most parts of the country, if you tell someone to bring a White Elephant gift it will almost certainly be a gag gift and not something genuinely useful or desirable.

THE GIFTS:

1. This party’s gift theme is XYZ.
2. The gift should be valued as close to $xx.00 as is reasonable.
3. The gift should be something someone would actually want or use. It should be in new or good condition.
4. The gift should be wrapped or in an envelope before arriving to the party. Gift bags are OK only if a wrapped item is inside.
5. Gift certificates are OK only if it is accompanied by some other item as part of the gift. For instance, a $xx Starbucks gift certificate, by itself, is not OK, but a $yy Starbucks gift certificate together with a coffee mug is OK.
6. As guests arrive to the party, the gifts should be placed in an area where few people can see who brought which gift. All efforts should be made to hide who brought which gift.
——————————————————————————–
THE GAME:

1. Each guest who wishes to participate must contribute a gift. Everyone sits or stands in roughly a circle around the pile of gifts.
2. Prepare slips of paper equal to the number of gifts with clearly written numbers. Be sure to distinguish 6 from 9, 1 from 7. Each participating guest draws a number and holds onto that slip of paper.
3. On the first turn, the guest with paper slip #1 chooses a gift, opens it, and all admire it.
4. On the second turn, the guest with paper slip #2 gets the choice of “stealing” any unwrapped gift (#1’s) or choosing a wrapped one. If #2 steals #1’s gift, then #1 must open a wrapped gift.
5. On the third turn, the guest with paper slip #3 gets the choice of “stealing” any unwrapped gift (#1’s or #2’s) or choosing a wrapped one.
~*~
Holiday attire is evening attire. Evening attire is not to be confused with f

The game continues based on the following:

1. If a gift is stolen from you, you can steal a gift (within limits, described below), or open a wrapped one.
2. The turn proceeds until a wrapped gift is chosen.
3. A gift cannot be immediately stolen back from the guest who just stole it.
4. The fourth “owner” of a gift gets to keep it. The gift is “dead” after it has been stolen three times.
5. “Owners” of “live” gifts must keep them visible and hold them up when requested.
6. The gift exchange ends when the last wrapped gift is opened. Usually, guests are encouraged to perpetuate the gift stealing as long as there are “live” gifts, but no one is obligated to do this.

~*~

Holiday attire is Evening attire. You are there to dress to impress as they say. This is not to be confused with Formal attire. You dress should be considered after-5 wear and in extremely good taste. Treat it as if you looking for a promotion.

~*~

White Elephant gift: go to the 2nd hand stores a set of ugly coffee mugs. Place a set of hot chocolate mix in each, Make them the stupiest, ugliest mugs you can find.

Steven asks…

Is a lawn mower a gardening tool?

personally i don’t think it is i never walk down the street and see someone mowing their garden i think it would be more of like a lawn tool or something like that……..

GardenersCardiff answers:

Its not a tool, a lawn tool sure, but not a gardening tool.

Jenny asks…

what is this garden tool called?

it has a long (can also be short) t-bar handle and has a kind of twisty bit on the bottom. it is used for turning over heavy soil, such as clay really easily.

i can’t remember what it’s called, but i need to buy one!

GardenersCardiff answers:

The garden claw…..What a waste of space this tool is….really easy…I don’t think so…..
If you are intending to grow veg I suggest that you make raised beds where the clay will act as a water holder. You will never make good soil out of clay..

But if you insist on digging it up then use a spade….Its much easier.

Michael asks…

What age range would buy a gardening tool?

For a project at school, I’ve chosen a gardening tool, but I can’t seem to find the age range for people who want to buy it.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Depends on the type of tool. Long handle, older people who can’t bend easily. Big tiller type tool, young people who can manage heavy equipment. Think about what strength and agility the tool will require, then figure out the age group which is best for it.

garden tools?

Can anyone reccomend the best garden tools for cutting down large bushes stumps and also up rooting them ?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It all depends on how much you have to do, and how valuable you consider your time.
The cheap way: axe, garden saw ( coarse teeth), pickaxe spade etc, and an awful lot of HARD WORK.
The easy way: hire a small excavator from your local Homebase, garden centre etc. And have a fun weekend, digging stuff out and filling a skip or two. ( Hippo bags might be cheaper – check the costs). With an excavator, you will probably get lots of offers of help from friends (male). Best of luck, and enjoy !

Portable gardening tool caddy questionnaire, please help !!!?

I am currently studying Product design for an A level and I and intending on designing a product which allows gardening tools to be transported around a garden without all the hassle of carrying individual tools. I am wondering how much any one would be willing to spend on a portable system like this?

Questionnaire

1) How much would you be willing to pay for a portable gardening tool caddy?

£0 – £10 or £10-£20 or £20-£30 or £30-£40 or £40 +

2) What are the top 10 tools which you use in your garden or own?

3) Do you currently own a portable gardening tool system, what is it, how much did it cost?

4) What colours do you think would be suitbale for this type of product

– bold (red, yellow, purple) – Camouflaged (green, brown, black ) – neutral (yellow, blue, white)

if there are any gardeners who have this problem, please answer this question, you could also give me feedback on how you think I could do this. ???????????
1 second ago – 4 days left to answer.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Personally I use a sort of garden trug thing for carting my small tools around and the bigger ones ride in the wheelbarrow.

I see the reasoning behind using green or brown as a more suitable colour to fit in with the garden, but I too would suggest at least an option of a bright colour such as yellow for any equipment used in the garden. It might also brighten up a dull day.

I’ve not infrequently mislaid my green-handled pruners and have also done the classic in tripping over the rake because it too was green and I didn’t notice it. Therefore I have a winter project in mind where everything I use in the garden is going to be painted or otherwise coloured bright yellow. Perhaps you might consider the same for the tool caddy, or whatever you come up with, then the user can say “Where did I leave that caddy? Oh yes, I can see it shining through that bush . . . “

Thomas asks…

Any gardening tips?????????????????????????

Im going to grow a garden this year i have all kinds of seeds ( sunflowers, cosmos, nasturtiums, radishes, and tomatos.) does anyone have any gardening tips, especially to remember that you have plants because in past years i’ve tried to grow things and then I forget all about them and they die. this year im making a resolution not to let that happen, so any tips for that or any gardening tips in general?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Main resolve – water thoroughly every day in summer. Two times of day to water – preferably in the early morning. If that doesn’t work for you, in early evening. (Never in the heat of the day, unless your plants look like they might not survive until evening and then water underneath them, so the water doesn’t scorch their leaves when the sun evaporates them.) Tomatoes might need watering twice a day during the hottest part of the summer.

Research each plant you want to grow to learn all about what it needs.

When you get hooked on gardening (and it sounds like that happened last year lol), start learning. Rule of thumb – the more you know, the greener your thumb becomes. 😉

Learn fertilizer, sun conditions, micro-climates, soil, tools, routines, why I said when to water, and everything else pertinent to your particular garden and needs. (I’m a container gardener, which is different then gardening in ground soil. Some plants like sun – like all of your choices – some like some sun, some like shade. Some plants like acidic soil, some like neutral, some like base…. So much to read, so little time.)

Lisa asks…

Gardening tips for calgary anything please?

thanx 😀

GardenersCardiff answers:

Here are some helpful gardening tips for you

• Cutting tips. Before cutting tall, damp grass, spray the cutting blade of the lawn mower with vegetable oil spray, so wet grass won’t stick. Be sure blades are sharp. Dull blades will rip rather than clip the grass and cause leaf tips to turn brown. Great State push-reel mower and Rust-resistant Hedge Shear are both ideal for small lawns since they are lightweight and easy to use.

• Organize. Hang a removable tote basket from the handle of the mower. You can either fill this with debris as you go along or use it as storage for your garden tools, so you save time and effort while mowing.

• Say goodbye to grass and weeds. A more practical solution than an afternoon of mowing and weeding is to sprinkle salted boiling water on unwanted weeds. This effectively kills grass or weeds growing between sections of cement walk.

• Nuisance control. To keep screws from loosening and vibrating noisily on power motors, apply some weather strip-sealer to the ends of screws. The screws will hold tight, but may easily be removed when necessary.

Quote by Winston Churchill about Operation Market Garden?

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
I am doing a high school powerpoint presentation tomorrow. It is a BIG part of my grade and I don’t want to bring down my grade by misquoting Winston Churchill. Did this quote pertain to Operation Market Garden? Or WWII in general about the same time as Operation Market Garden took place? (September 1944)

GardenersCardiff answers:

This quote is about the Battle of Britain. He was exactly right too.

Dear Lord. Have we come this far that we cannot find a child who can find an attribution for one of the most famous quotes of the 20th century?

By going to yahoo search and typing in “Churchill Quote Arnhem” I found 2 websites within 30 seconds that contained Churchill Quotes about Arnhem.

Can you imagine what it was like for us old people when we needed quotes or comments? We had to go to a Library and troll through books, by hand, to find usable quotes.

I sound like my father. You youngsters have no idea how lucky you are.

To finish my rant. LOL

“There were 42 of us living in t` shoebox in the middle of t` motorway”

Charles asks…

Is it possible for me to build my own a garden greenhouse?

One of my best friends is a gardening fanatic and I notice that I become more and more interested in gardening. I am planning to have my own garden but you know the day is cold now. I wonder is it possible for me to build my own a garden greenhouse? How to do that?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Firstly it’s brilliant you want to get into gardening. I can tell you that you will get lots of good exercise and if you opt for growing fruit and veg, your grocery bills are going to come way down.

Yes, you can build your own greenhouse. These mostly come in kit form from a DIY supplier and they have a range of sizes to choose from.

Here’s a guide on building a greenhouse – http://hometipster.com/Gardening/how_to_build_a_greenhouse.aspx

Also, considering you are new to gardening, check out our How To Gardening section – http://hometipster.com/Gardening/home.aspx There are loads of guides and videos that will show you how to grow all sorts of things plus a whole lot more.

Hope you find this useful and good luck with your gardening 🙂

Help with what to plant in new garden?

I’m new to the whole gardening thing; I have an area outside I’d like to plant in…it’s a raised area next to the house surrounded by rocks. It gets lots of sunlight throughout the day. Any suggestions what to plant there? I want a variety of height and color. Can I go to a garden store and just buy a bunch of flowers?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Welcome to gardening!

Since you are new, you will want things that are easy to care for. I chose a bunch of culinary stuff for my bed: Tomatoes, green peppers, basil, oregano, sage, and lemon balm. You may want to actually put the lemon balm and oregano in containers, because these two plants are related to mints. Which can spread aggressively. I also got marigold seed.

Check at your local nursery: There should be someone who can advise you there. And take a look at the Arbor Day foundation site for planting zones: There has been some change in climate since the zones were first established.

Good luck!

Linda asks…

What can I grow in a small garden with poor sunlight in London?

Hi,

I am new to gardening and I have a small garden with poor sunshine. I would like to grow plants (trees) or some vegetables, what do you suggest? I really would like to plant lemons but I guess I needs lots of light for them!

Thank you

GardenersCardiff answers:

One of the coolest things you can do in a place like london is to grow smaller things, pretty much anything in a hydroponic garden atmosphere. It works so incredibly well. ‘

Also if you want to grow outdoors use low light herbs and things. They are gorgeous to look at and you can use them in your foods or for other things as well.

Amazon has this thing to grow stuff inside that I love. Its pretty expensive but it works. There are also little lights that you can use to grow things inside that don’t take up much space. I live in a cooler climate like you in the winter time so growing things outdoors isn’t always easy but you can do it inside very nicely wtihout much room.

I’ve tried pasting in the link twice but it won’t work to show you teh image so here is the link to the product.

Charles asks…

Is it very wrong to collect snails in my garden and throw them over the hedge into my neighbours neglected…

…garden?
The Drunken Fool,
You’re a cad, Sir! Throwing snails into a well-tended garden.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It’s the right and proper thing to do.If he kept his garden nice, then you wouldn’t do it. Although I would carry on, it’s much more fun!

Sharon asks…

In which countries are garden centres (and gardening) popular?

Which countries around the world have lots of gardening centres?
There are certainly plenty in my native England, because there are so many keen gardeners. Where else would I expect to see garden centres, and gardens that the householders look after?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well, I’m sure it is impossible to say since I’ve never been everywhere, but I’d assume that although quite a few countries may not have the “Garden Center”, they do have avid gardeners. Just to name a few, the places I’m certain you can expect to find household gardens are in:
Great Britain
United States
India
China
Japan
Australia
Spain
Mexico
Holland
Germany
Russia
Canada
There are just way too many to mention, but you get the point. Gardening and the love of Gardening is not unique to any country.

Lizzie asks…

What department stores have good GARDENING DEPARTMENTS?

You know how Wal-Mart and K-Mart both have pretty big gardening departments? Well I don’t have either of those stores near me. I’m in Los Angeles, but for some reason they aren’t as big or popular here.

What other stores have good gardening departments? I don’t think Target does, as far as I know. Any others?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Lot’s of hardware stores have a section in the back that has garden stuff. I love to just browse those stores myself.

Nancy asks…

Where do I start to learn how to create a backyard vegetable garden?

I have a roughly 20’X3′ area in the backyard that would be perfect for a vegetable garden. Having grown up in the city I have very little clue about gardening.
Where do I start to gain knowledge about gardening and specifically about vegetable gardens. The vegetables/herbs/fruits I would like to grow would be tomatoes, parsely, lemons, etc. Suggestions on what is possible are also very welcome.

I am looking for recommendations on books, websites, etc.

I am in central California, USA.

Thanks very much in anticipation of your replies.

Regards!

Thomas asks…

How to start a home garden?

Hello. I’m interested in starting my own garden at home. I’m planning to plant strawberries, tomatoes, blueberries, watermelon, and grapes. I’ve chosen a plot of land, but I don’t know exactly how to start a garden. The plot of land is riddled with weeds, soil seems to be poor, a bit sandy. What can I do to make it suitable for gardening? I’m an absolute beginner.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Take the grapes off your list, for starters. If you’re a newbie, start small, with a few plants, and expand your garden as you gain experience. A common mistake for first-timers is that they put in too big a garden, with too much, and then are overwhelmed, and give up in frustration.

Strawberries I recommend growing in containers where you see them every day, and can keep an eye on them. A small vegetable garden with a couple tomatoes or peppers, or 1 or 2 other things is a good start. Pick your spot – a 3 foot by 10 or 12 foot is plenty big for your first year – in a sunny place, that isn’t too far from water or a hose. Till or just turn the soil with a shovel, and work in a lot of compost a couple weeks before your last frost date, and you’ll be ready to plant.

Grapes are a whole learning curve in themselves, and I recommend them NOT being the first thing your plant.

Blueberries, if your soil ph is below 6.5, are do-able, as they’re fairly simple to plant. If your soil ph is close to 7.0, though, they will never be very happy.

Tomatoes will want about 9 square feet of space per plant (I often see them planted about a foot apart – easy to do when they’re so small when you plant). Watermelon will sprawl – the vines traveling 10 to 20 feet…but if you have the space, you can kind of “direct” where the vine goes as it grows.

Michael asks…

How can I keep people from stealing from my garden?

I live in area where people are known to steal from peoples garden, unlike others who stopped gardening, I would like to plant this year.

I also have limited yard space to work with.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Plant something like squash that makes a lot and give it to your neighbors. Share what you have even if its not much at all. Talk to people who walk by while you are gardening. Give it a year or so. People don’t steal from their friends so be their friend.

Friendship and talk brings a sense of community instead of distrust and bickering.

I get more pleasure from sharing my produce with friends than actully eatting it all myself. Nobody in my area would steal becasue all they have to a do is ask.

Downtown in summer you must lock your car doors. If you don’t somebody will fill it with squash!
