Sandra asks…

Can I use an Olive Garden gift card AND coupon together?

Why yes, I AM cheap! Haha.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes you can. The gift card simply has a pre-determined value that has already been paid for. It is like paying in cash. The coupon is a special discount that is deducted off the bill.

Secret Santa: gardening gift ideas?

We are having a Secret Santa in our office and the name that I picked is for a woman who I don’t know much about. All I know is that she has a nice garden near her home. Last year, I picked her name and I bought her a plant. She loved it! I don’t want to get her the same gift this year. It’s too difficult to transport from home during the morning rush hour. Any suggestions? The maximum is $20. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

She would like a gift card to a gardening center.

Linda asks…

Can you redeem gift cards with different companies?

What’s this I’m hearing about business’ accepting gift cards from other companies? Are all the major places like Best Buy, Home Depot and Wal-Mart in on this? I have a Khol’s card I’d rather use at one of these places. Any links with detailed info or a list of participating business’ would be much appreciated!

GardenersCardiff answers:

The only way you could use a giftcard elsewhere would be if they were all owned by the same company like….red lobster giftcards can be used at Olive Garden,Bahamas Breeze…..

Khol’s is a great place to shop, why would you not want to shop there?

Good luck and happy shopping!

James asks…

What should I eat at Olive Garden?

I’m taking my mom and sister to eat at Olive Garden (late mothers day gift) once I get out of school for the summer break (thank god). This is my first time going and I’ve read reviews on it being bad, but I still want to try it. My question is what do you like to eat there? Besides the breadsticks and appetizers.

GardenersCardiff answers:

My favorite thing at Olive Garden is the Fettuccine or Chicken Alfredo. Other things that are delicious include Chicken Parmesan, Spaghetti, and the Chicken Marsala. Personally I love the dishes that have alfredo based sauces because they are creamy and delicious. This past weekend I tried the Asiago-Garlic Fettuccine which was very good as well.

I choose soup instead of salad to go with the breadsticks. The Zuppa Toscana is very good and my latest favorite is the Chicken ‘n’ Gnocchi.

Steven asks…

What gift should I get for my 2 years old son?

I already planned for his birthday party this week on Sunday. He have so many clothes and toys. What gift should I get for my son?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi there,

I think it depends on the personality of your child. What does he like? Some children love to attend live children’s concerts. Some love picture books. There are some good learning video cassettes like “Baby Einstein” or “Baby Mozart” series. There are children’s version of laptop computers. Some children like attending special children’s workshops, for examples, art & craft, music, dancing, sports, gardening, drama, photography etc. There exist a lot of workshops that offer free trial sessions that you may like to consider.

A trip to a place of interest also might be appealing to your child.

Personally, I would buy what my child finds “cool”.

Most importantly, I’m sure you have already prepared for him a day filled with joy, laughter, and loving memories.

Wishing your child a Super Happy Birthday!

Daniel asks…

Anyone else experiencing problems from all the garden gnomes coming in and messing up your desk overnight?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Wow! I’m glad I’m not the only 1! I thought they were just targeting me! 😉

Joseph asks…

What is your favorite weapon from any video game?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most of my favorite weapons are either from stuff from a story perspective (Phantasy Star’s Elysdeon, Fire Emblem’s Ragnell, etc), or those that are so hillariously OP/rediculous that they’re just fun to use.

Many of my favorites came from Fallout 3: The junk cannon, letting you fire high velocity garden gnomes at people, the MIRV – not just one nuke, have a whole bunch of them! (it’s near impossible to use this thing without killing yourself in the process, it does so much ridiculous damage over such a massive area), and the gauss rifle, soley for one single sniping kill.

Me, on one radio tower, my target on another, maybe a quarter mile away. I scope in, fire, and hear a “CLANG!” as it… Pops the thug’s head clean off. I see it go shooting into the air and in a massive arc, it traveled, i don’t know, maybe 3 or four miles before I lost it in the horizon (it was still in the air at the time). I absolutely lost it laughing, and I’d like to think that punk’s last words were “hey, I can see my house from up here!”

Also, honorable mention goes to Phantasy Star Online (Blue Burst version’s) unbelievably broken Heaven’s Striker. I found one with hit on it, modded up the dark photon stat to 100 with the pile o’ photon drops I had stored up, and rolled up a Ranger soley to use it. Abusing PSO’s equip requirements, I made a solid ATA exploit mag so said RAmarl could use it at level 1.

And I then proceeded to kill every. Single. Monster (including bosses) in one, overpowered berserk special attack all the way up to very hard’s vol opt (i think he took 2), and Falz (who took about 2 per form). Broken as hell, but hillariously funny.

Charles asks…

My boyfriends 21st birthday is coming up, and i wanted to get him 21 gifts.?

I want to get him 21 small presents to make up one big special present! does anyone have any ideas of somethings i could get him. it would really help! Thanks so much

Sandra asks…

What activities to organise for annual dinner and how to do a gift exchange?

We had an auction last year and as for the gift exchange we had something call secret santa whereby the receiver of the gift do not know who is the gift from.Kindly help me out suggesting something different from last year. Thank you so much.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Just please DO NOT do that gift exchange when people have numbers and you can pick from either a wrapped gift under the tree or take a gift from a coworker. I’ve had soo many jobs do that. All it does it make people feel insecure when their gift isn’t traded 5 times. Or people get pissed when they open a great gift early b/c they aren’t going to get it in the end. In a group of 20, only one person goes home happy. Everyone else wishes they had those 2 hours back.

Plus I’ve had it happen once where we got to pick 3 different numbers so that everyone would have two chances to steal a gift. Problem was that several of us ended up with low numbers and went home with no gift at all. Yeah. That sucked.

Also don’t make things unisex. Most gifts appeal to either a man or a woman.

If you are going to allow gag gifts, make that the rule. All gifts must be under $15 and must be humorous. Or make a no gag gift rule. Between $10 and $20 and no gag gifts at all.

I like Secret Santa as long as you know each other. I hate buying gifts for people I don’t know at all and have never met. Especially if the person in charge doesn’t help at all. If you are going to run a secret santa, have every participant fill out a survey. The survey can change to different things. If you had any job, what would be your ideal job? What do you need for this job? This can allow a person to describe how they enjoy gardening, camping, or knitting. Include Things You have enough of (please no more bath products), favorite scent, favorite restaurant, favorite store. That way people can at least make an effort to Santa something they would like.

We did a 2 round Secret Santa. You pick a name. Go get the survey and get them a gift. Then check off the question that you got (for example–check off Favorite Scent). Put survey back. Then draw names and do it again. That also gives you the opportunity to regift that 1st round gift.

My sister’s company did a Christmas ornament exchange. It was great b/c no one had expectations. Everyone just got a simple ornament and hung it on the tree. Make sure you do not have non-Christians in the office when starting this tradition.

I think the best idea is a gift card exchange. Everyone bring a $20 gift card to different places. Then you can pick a new card or switch with someone else. You can only be stolen from twice. Everyone gets a gift card. Everyone will be happy with getting to pick something out at Best Buy, PetSmart, Target, etc.

Susan asks…

What gift can I make with shells I found on the beach?

I have these small shells I got on the beach, I was planning on painting them purple and making a gift from them but I need some suggestions, for a guy or girl it can be hearts or something, I have about two handfuls of them. Any help? Thx.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try these sites.

http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/home-garden-projects/outdoor-projects/beach-crafts/chime-bracelets-660923/

If you want something fun and easy to do with small shells you can make candles. Buy cheap pillar candles, I liked the white. Use the tip of your hot glue gun to melt a spot on the candle and press a shell into the wax. You just have to hold it until the wax starts to set. If you do the bottom half of the candle this way and then tie a piece of raffia ribbon around the center it makes for a nice accent piece in a bathroom or anywhere.

Basically, you can glue them to any small trays, mirrors, frames, etc. You can also make jewelry with it. I took a box once and glued them onto it. Then I decorated the box. It was so cute

Well I would just recommend using a little imagination too. Good Luck!!

Donna asks…

What do you buy someone who has everything as a housewarming gift?

My sil and her husband are moving into a new house, my boyfriend and I want to buy them a gift for about £40, they are very well off and have everything they need already. What would be a thoughtful housewarming gift for them. If it helps they’re early thirties and have a 7 month old baby boy.

GardenersCardiff answers:

A large potted plant that baby can not topple over, vouchers for their favourite shops or a wine merchants.
Someone said baby sitting service which is a great idea, especially if they have not moved in yet you could take the little one whilst they are organising the new house. Do they have a garden get something for the new garden or a baby swing to put in it.
There are so many things you can still get them even if they do seem to have everything.
You could also treat them to a take away on the first night in to save any cooking.

James asks…

How should I start a pepper garden?

I really like gardening but I want to start growing peppers like habanaros bhut jolokia and Trinidad scorpions so how should I start when should I start where can I get seeds how many peppers can I get from 1 plant can I sell excess peppers I don’t need where can I sell them and how do I grow peppers?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It is too late to start your plants from seed. Purchase small plants from your local nursery or garden center. They need to be planted in full sun and soil rich in humus. They are also very suitable for pots on you patio. The vibrant color of the fruit make them very attractive plants. Different varieties produce different amounts. Contact your county for FREE professional advice specific for you region. I have sold excess vegetables at farmer’s markets and independent, locally owned vegetable markets.

I have also pickled and canned peppers and vegetables to sell and to give as gifts.

Maria asks…

What is a list of small things I can put in a gift basket for my dad for Christmas?

After hours and hours of thinking of something to get my dad, I’ve finally came up with a small idea. I’ve gonna have one semi-expensive thing in a gift basket surrounded with other small things for my dad. The big thing is going to be a new, quality checkbook since his is so beat up, it’s insane. Do you have any idea on what I can get him to surround the wallet? Just small, cheap things that a dad would like.

GardenersCardiff answers:

What about a calculator and a fancy pen? A bottle of his favorite cologne? A mini bottle of champagne? A packet of peanuts? Some winter gloves? A mug with his name on, or with ‘best dad!’ on.
Some books. How about some tools? Maybe you could buy him a little painted boat that sits on a stand? A photograph frame? What about a gardening set if he likes gardening? Some DVD’s? How about some underwear with a funny word on?

Have a merry christmas!

Richard asks…

What type of gift card do you most like to receive?

I want to offer a gift card as a prize in a corporate promotion and want to find out what type of gift card people most like to receive. Specific suggestions would be welcome.

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you are giving out a gift card for a specific city, make sure the card can be used in that area. For example, I live on the south coast of Oregon. We have 1 Starbucks (in the hospital), few major retailers (no Target, no Home Depot or Lowes, no Office Depot, no Olive Garden or similar restaurants, no Borders or Dalton bookstores). So getting a gift card from one of these vendors wouldn’t attract many people to participate in the promotion.

What we do have (so would be more likely in ‘any’ city) – Walmart, Kmart, JC Penney, McDonalds. Another option is a card that can be used online – these can be used anyplace in the US.

My personal favorite card – Either a American Express, DiscoverCard, JCPenny or Amazon giftcard.

Betty asks…

What are some good gifts to give to teachers at the end of the year?

Keep in mind that these are gifts for 8th grade teachers so it would be my last year at this school. Also there are about 10 teachers so keep cost in mind too…Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Trust me, teachers have so much accumulated junk in the form of gifts from students that they could live off yard sales for much of their careers.

So, what you get the teacher is something that is going to be used up. If you know for a fact that the teacher loves a particular brand of chocolate, then get that. If you don’t know such preferences, don’t guess.

Otherwise, it’s all about gift cards at restaurants such as Olive Garden, Outback or whatever.

But that’s kinda cheesy, right? I mean, is s/he really gonna remember YOU when that card gets used? No, of course not. UNLESS you also present her with a card that has your mug on the inside and says,

“Thanks -everyone in your class is better because of you. I appreciate it and will never forget what you have taught me -both in terms of the (name of subject) and also in terms of just growing up. What I’ve enclosed is a small token of my appreciation -and if I enclosed a thousand of them, they wouldn’t be enough. Hope you enjoy, and please -don’t stop teaching any time soon!”

Now get going!

David asks…

How much should we spend on wedding gift and what kind of gift certificate?

Our family is going to the wedding of a church friend (the groom). Both the groom and the bride are in their 40s. They are getting married in our church and the invitation does not mention any wedding registry or reception. I am thinking of buying them a gift certificate, but I don’t know what they like. All I know is that the groom is very simple, nature-loving person.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Technically, and under the rules of etiquette, the invitation won’t have the registry listed in it. If you want to know what they want, and where they are registered, call them, one of the wedding party, or their parents, if they are around and involved in the wedding. And yes, it is polite to do so if you want to call and ask.

If you want to be practical, a gift card to a big box store like K-mart or Walmart is good. They could buy anything they wanted to, even putting your card on a pricey item.

If you know he gardens, a gift card to the local nursery, or one of the hardware stores that sells gardening supplies.

Ask if they have hobbies, a gift card to the camera store, or the craft store would be OK.

Or ask what their favorite restaurant is, and even if it is McDonald’s, that is fine for a gift card.

And money is always fine. Depending on how well you know them, and how many people are in your party and will be listed on the card, around a $100 for the present would not be out of line.

Jenny asks…

What is a small business i can start in a country town in W.A?

There is plenty of shops and warehouses to rent for minimal money. I want something different and that will be popular.. I was think of opening a body peircing shop or a garden center/outdoor gift lines..

Does anyone have any other differnt ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Sure do…and no matter how small or big the town is, everybody will find a need for this. Its legal, its from home, and its a money maker.

Can you email me? I promise you will find the information I’m going to share with you to be enlightning.

What part of WA? I used to live in Steilacoom outside of Tacoma. Loved it there. Hope to hear from you soon.

Ruth asks…

Can they take tips out of gift card balances?

If you use a gift card and you want to leave a tip, can you take the tip out of the gift card balance? How does that work? For example, for Olive Garden gift cards.

GardenersCardiff answers:

No, a gift card balance is money that goes directly to the restraunt. A tip however, goes to the waitress.

Donna asks…

How do I stop all the spam emails I get?

I filled out a survey to get a free olive garden gift card.I did not get the card but I cant stop all the junk mail now in my spam folder.

GardenersCardiff answers:

99% of the free offers are scam when the amount of the prize is over a few dollars. It is just to get your address to sell to mailing lists. I am sorry but it is next to impossible to stop. Many spam emails have a link to remove you but the majority of the time it just confirms that you exist.

NOTE: If the junk mail is actually in your spam folder then the Yahoo filter is doing what it is supposed to do.

Thomas asks…

What’s the best plant for someone bad at gardening?

I’m not exaggerating – I’ve killed an aloe plant, rosemary (twice), even a bamboo that you only have to water once a month! Right now I have a cactus as a gift and I’ve kept it alive for almost 6 months and would like to expand. I’m looking for an indoor plant and get some sun (I’m on the west side of my building). Sometimes I go away for a weekend and don’t really have anyone to water plants for me. Ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Spider plants are hard to kill, and beginner gardners have luck with them:

Is there any way to send a coupon or gift card to a Myspace email?

I am wanting to send a gift card to someone’s Myspace email account. Do you know if this is possible? Do you know which companies would allow this? For example, could I send an Olive Garden gift card to their email and they could download it and use it or claim it at a local Olive Garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

This would work with online coupons all you have to do is send them the link or send them the picture of the coupon that you downloaded…however as far as i know any major retailer would require an actual gift card (those pretty little plastic things) in which case you would need to either mail it to the person or give it to them (read: a gift…)

I think olive garden is a crock. I’ve been to locally-owned Italian restaurants owned by the same Italian families for years and years. I have no interest in the McDonald’s of Italian food. So, what’s so great about it? Win me over, if possible.
Ps- I can’t sell the card, my MIL works there, so she’d know. And I’m not ungrateful.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I like that soup that has the little dumplings in it. {but they could easily cut out some of the salt in it; and it might even be better.}

For the main course, go for something that is more meat, cheese, and sauce. A chicken entree would probably be your best choice there.

Carol asks…

Would it be rude to open gifts at the wedding reception?

I’m having a small wedding(under 30 people) and the reception will be at either Red Lobster or Olive Garden. I want to open gifts at the reception, but my mom says it would be rude to those that don’t bring gifts.

Would it be rude? I’m not greedy, I just thought it’d be fun to do at the reception.

So should me and my fiance open them at the restuaraunt or on our honeymoon?

HELP!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t think it would be in very good taste. Many people don’t bring gifts at all – they bring cash in a card, and it’s really not polite to open cash gifts in front of others. That’s best done at home, in private, for both etiquette AND security/safety purposes. You don’t want to be walking out of some family restaurant with wads of loose cash!

Also, remember that guests have plenty of time after your wedding to send a gift on. If someone wants to wait (say, until their payday) to buy and mail a gift, it would be very uncomfortable for them to have that fact highlighted by their gift not being there at the time of the opening.

Follow your mum’s advice, she knows what she’s talking about.

Donald asks…

what does a debut party program include aside from the 18 ancdles, 18 rses and 15 gifts?

I’m about to throm a debut party next week. How do I make it different? What else should I include aside from the 18 roses and candles and gifts? What games can I prepare? It’s gonna be in a small garden with rain-proof covers. guests are in formal attires. What can I do to make the party short but not boring?
that’s 18 candles, 18 roses, and 18 gifts…sorry for the error in spelling. i want a short game but a lively one. i also need the mechanics of the games. No video games please. Preferable can be played by teens or young adults who come in pairs. thanks.

Can you use Applebees gift cards at other restaurants?

For example on an Olive Garden gift card I got, you could use it at Macaroni Grill, and some other affiliates. Does Crapplebees have this type of affiliation with another restaurant chain that you could use the gift card at?

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you can use the gift card at more than one restaurant owned by the same company it will say so somewhere on the card. If you don’t like Applebees and would prefer a gift card for a different restaurant, there are websites where you can sell gift cards for cash or exchange them for gift cards from other companies. If you want to check some of the reputable companies, here is a link with more information: http://www.squidoo.com/unwanted-gift-cards

George asks…

how much money should I put on an olive garden gift card?

whats a good price for a b-day gift card to olive garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I usually figure in $15-$20 per person when I give a gift card, with a minumum of $30-$40 (enough for two people). If they have a family then I usually give closer to $70 so they can bring their kids and it will cover some of that, too.

Even if they are single they will more than likely go with somebody so I would think $30 minimum.
