good gardening blog – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-622/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-622/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2013 13:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-622/

James asks…

Looking for a good gardening blog for my wife?

She’s really into gardening and magic fairies and stuff like that. She has lots of little statues like that in her garden. Any suggestions that sort of combine the two?

GardenersCardiff answers:

We have a great gardening community at
http://www.gardnersgumbo.com
You can get lots of ideas from other members who also love statues, fairies and other garden art.

Laura asks…

What are your favorite herb and vegetable garden web sites?

I live and garden in the desert Southwest. I’ve learned how to garden around killer hot summers and super alkaline soil. So, far the places I visit most are the Garden Web Arizona forum and the University of Arizona agricultural sites. What about you? Where do you learn about growing herbs and veggies?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I also live in the southwest. I like http://davesgarden.com/. It has regional forums, including a southwest forum populated by other people who garden in the same conditions. Some of these people are very experienced, and some are new like me.

Beside the regional forums, the site also has general education articles and videos; garden blogs; garden journals, plant database, bug database, bird database, insect reference guide, and gardening terms reference.

You can just browse, register for free, or subscribe for about $20/ year.

I also use the Univeristy of Arizona Extension for Maricopa County.

Except for Daves Garden, I have not found much information about gardening in the desert. I have added your Garden Web Arizona to my favorites.

Susan asks…

What are the best vegetables to start seedlings for my garden?

I am planting my very first garden this year!! I want to start some seedlings indoors since I typically have a black thumb and thought it may help to start something indoors 😀 What would be best? We know we want green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet corn, zucchini, melons, beets, peas, green peppers, and I am sure something more…which are best to start indoors? I thought tomatoes for sure…and we are still snow covered here in Michigan so I cant put anything in the ground yet, or for a few weeks weather pending :/

GardenersCardiff answers:

IF you have a black thumb, tomatoes are ill advised. They are extremely fussy and are very prone to fungal diseases and pests.

Cucumbers can work, but you need to give them something to grow on and harvest them before they go bitter. Zucchini is easy to work with as long as you don’t have stem borers. Green beans and corn are also reasonably easy. FYI, “Green peppers” are simply bell peppers that are picked before they ripen. All peppers change from green to something else.

Peas and beets and all brassicas (cabbage/radishes/mustard/kale/etc.) are cooler season crops, so don’t try to force them to work in summer unless you live in like Minnesota or Canada.

Best thing to do is research local gardening blogs in your area/state and use their input as a guideline. I guarantee, they will know more about your area than any Home Depot ‘expert’ or strangers on the internet. Good luck.

Sandra asks…

What are some blogs/magazines that showcase houses & gardens & buildings?

I like looking at architecture and I’m looking for a blogs and/or magazines that feature nice houses and buildings. I’m not so much into modern architecture, but more European/urban townhouse/cute cottages style architecture. I’m not sure where I can find this type of thing though…help?

I’m looking for exterior architecture, not interior design, and something that deals with small houses not huge mansions.

Thank you 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

Better Homes & Gardens, Sunset Magazine, Martha Stewart Living Magazine & Coastal Living are all very good ones Visit a few garden sites, too, Spring Hill Nursery is my personal favorite.
He architural BIBLE in the Archetecural Digest Magazine. (Bar none) Look for magazines that specilize in the typef of architecture of what you’re looking for. Country Living is a good one.
And do a google search for Engliisshj Country homes And English Country Gardens,

Before you start spending money on plant material. Puchase t Western Garden Book. It;s the best to assist you with plants and flowers that will grow best in your growing zone. They provide excellent photos of garden ideas, too.

What’s a good gardening blog?

My GF is trying to study up for planting a garden next year. Any suggestions for helpful blogs or websites? Thanks.

Dave’s Garden has encyclopedic amounts of information available. They also have GardenWatchdog, which gives feedback on many mailorder gardening companies, so she can check out reputations before she places any orders.

Hey Matty D,

South Carolina has the Emmy Award-winning “Making It Grow!”, which is a live, interactive call-in program produced by ETV and Clemson University, serving viewers with current research-based horticultural information. Host Rowland Alston, Jr., and featured guests focus on gardening topics, while highlighting interesting places and products from around the state.

The chat is open at various times.
