George asks…

Can I grow herbs indoors in a basement apartment?

I am very interested in growing my own herbs for cooking. I used to have a herb garden where I grew dill, parsley and a few other plants but that was when I lived with my parents and had a house, and my garden was on my deck.

Now I am living with my fiance in a basement apartment. I was wondering, if I put the herb plants on the window sills, would they get sufficient light to grow? I should also say I live where we have very cold winters and very hot summers.

Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yeah you can grow herbs anywhere you will find that they grow better on window sill and rotate them around so they get some light and keep moist and when you find right places for each herb you will have great selection ..i have lots types herbs growing and there scatterd around garden and indoors on window sill and all have taken well ..just water when the sun low not at its peak ..but its basically get the water, light and temperature.right and you will have great selection off herbs …

David asks…

Do you grow you own herbs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

LOL. I have a black thumb. I killed a cactus.

Maria asks…

I really want to grow my own veggies and herbs but there’s a problem?

We moved to an apartment a while back and we have no sunlight anywhere other than my mom’s room, my room, and the patio. Problem is, my mom smokes a buttload outside and I think it’s one of the reasons why our last plants died. We had two basil plants, mint, parsley, oregano, rosemary, and two strawberry plants. All died a couple months after we bought them. Yes they were container plants, but how can mint die!? Mint used to be a weed in our backyard!

What the heck do I do here? I don’t want to have to keep spending loads on fresh tomatoes and cilantro 🙁
Probably could be from weather. It started getting hotter as they started dying. Florida heat is a mofo.
I know the lighting was perfect. They all drained well, but overwatering could also have been a problem.
lol I actually was using Miracle Gro potting mix and their container plant fertilizer. They also coincidentally started going when I started using it 🙁

Maybe I just can’t grow things.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Divert course from Singapore to Florida. Initiate program ‘Never grew a thing before this’.
First attempt failed – try again! Don’t look for attention on the Internet! Speak to the people at the Garden Center or join a group. Trust ME! Old icky men are seeing a confused simple Asian with a command of the English language and you might not even get dinner.

Richard asks…

Growing herbs at home!?

As I am getting a bigger interest in cooking, I was thinking about to start growing some herbs. Do you grow the outside or indoors? I live in the UK so its pretty cold outside at the minute. What are the best herbs to grow? Is it just pot and soil needed? any help would be appreciated

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are many books on growing herbs – have a browse in your local bookshop. Basically, grow spearmint, basil, parsley, marjoram, chives, thyme, lemon thyme and summer savory for savoury dishes. Rosemary is nice for roast lamb, but it grows into a large bush. You will need about 15 inches square of ground for each herb if you want to have plenty, as pots don’t really yield enough to be useful. Herbs do very well in raised beds. Thyme and marjoram last all winter, the others die off in winter, but you can cut and dry them for winter use. Your own dried herbs make really tasty stuffings and forcemeat.
I should buy seed packets and follow the directions.

Tips on growing herbs?

I want to grow my own herbs over the winter since I just got the idea now. I want to grow mint, and oregano. This is obviously going to be an indoor project and i might sell some of what I grow. So for those experienced, what are some do’s and dont’s of growing herbs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are several ways on growing herbs indoors your best bet is getting a growing cabinet or constructing one yourself. There are also smaller growers like http://www.mysecretpantry.com/departments.asp?dept=39
and believe it or not there are hundreds of tips and help from people who grow cannabis (legally) I would search around dutch websites(translated in English) they always seem to be on top of everything new and exciting when it comes to gardening. There are very simple ways of growing plants/herbs indoors just depends on your workspace and the amount of herbs you plan on growing a simple indoor window box would work. I would Just google for more information

Donna asks…

GARDENING: How to grow your own food?

My fiance was wanting me to ask this question… How do you grow your own food? I personally have a general idea and know how better than he does because I grew up gardening with my father. I was so young then, so having someone throw out tips or anything helpful would be great, because I know I would need a good brushing up.

So, what do we need to know, do…? What’s the perfect weather to start planting seed? What kind of chemicals and stuff would we need to help protect the plants from parasites and what kind of things should we set out to protect the plants from any type of animal? Anything will help us.

Thank you. (:

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow tomatoes & herbs, have a patio garden (all in pots & hanging baskets). I start in the spring, when there is no chance of frost. In my area (SW Ontario, Canada), the rule of thumb is to plant at the end of May. My lettuce grows best when the days are warm & nights are cool (Spring & Fall). Some plants are sensitive. Also, the seed packs will have instructions on them. Most seeds should be started indoors in early spring. Some plants like squash, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, corn & beans are best started in the garden.

Those are some ideas, just read labels & google lots!

Joseph asks…

Anyone have good tips for an indoor herb garden?

I have never even had a real plant, but I’m interested in growing my own herbs indoors. Where is a good place to purchase what is needed for one? What are some helpful tips in growing and maintaining?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Lack of sufficient light is the main problem that most people have with regards to growing herbs indoors. Be sure to keep them in a sunny window or provide supplimental artificial light for them. Also try using a top quality potting soil, I use Miracle Gro because of the slow release fertilizer which lasts about 3 months. The easiest way to have a good start to your garden is to get small plants/seedlings from a nursery or garden shop.Their knowledgeable employees can be a great resource for growing any type of plant, indoors or out.

Ruth asks…

where can i buy a chia herb garden or something similar in a store, not online please?

i am looking to grow my own herbs the only problem is that i don’t have alot of room to grow them. i heard that the chia herb garden is good and that it doesnt take up much space. thanks all.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I usually see them advertised or available in stores around Christmas. Sometimes, however, you can find a few left on the shelves in discount stores like Wal-Mart, Target, or K-Mart. Drugstores may have them–the Walgreens in my area practically has a monopoly on them at Christmas so I’d bet that they have them year-round–especially something like the herbs. Have you tried the close-out type of stores–Big Lots, for instance?

Sandy asks…

I want to try and start an herb garden?

I really like cooking, and it’d be a lot more convenient and cheaper if I grew my own herbs.
I want to do it indoors though.
I live in northern Indiana, so in the winter it gets reallllllly cold.
But would putting them in a window still work?
I get that they’d be getting sunlight, but it’s still cold next to a window.

And what would be some good herbs to start with?
And how much and how often should I water them?

Do you think the library would have books about it too?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi growing your own herbs is a fantastic idea, some herbs that do good indoors are lavender, basil, oregano, rosemary, chamomile, and mint.
Putting them in a window sill would be a good idea preferably a window facing south it will provide the best sunlight. Most herbs require a moderate amount of sunlight but if they don’t get enough sunlight you can supplement by using a “grow lamp” or fluorescent lighting.
When watering over watering can be bad you just need to keep the soil moist all you need to do is keep an eye on your herbs not let the soil dry.
Water about once a week should be ample. A sign of over watering is yellowing of the leaves.

Daniel asks…

To all that battle here in this RS section?

We can argue and debate till the cows come home. But is anyone noticing the real items behind the curtain?

Like HR 875 is trying to be pushed through congress/senate during the next few weeks all nice and quiet. What is HR 875 you might ask? Monsanto’s law that will stop you from growing your own garden, your own herbs, the end of organic food.

So is the battle here really worth it? Or is the real battle that is out there more important? Spread the news, research the topic, tell others. Our very food source is in danger.
I cannot believe the majority of you don’t even know your own country nor your own laws being passed. Go back to fake TV land as clearly you have no clue what real life is.

Robert and the FEW others that grasp the complexity and urgency of this knowledge. Thank you for being awake among the blind and deaf sheep that walk among us.

And to all who said no one is coming to take their garden. You need to wake up and just watch the world. You might learn something past who gets the high score in a video game.

Thank you for posting this. Here’s the link to the act.

Everyone else, please bother to read it before you criticize this guy for posting about it. As I’m reading it I’m not 100% sure what the implications are for homegrown vegetables, but this could definitely put all but the very largest ag-business farms out of business.

George asks…

Poll: Do you grow your own. . .?

Uh, veggies? and/or herbs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes .. Ive just spent 6 hours today in the allotment we have .. Palted out loads today .. Shattered now .. But feeling good.

Mandy asks…

Can anybody share their experiences of owning an AeroGardener for growing vegetables and herbs indoors?

Where we live, it’s too cool to grow vegetables outdoors in winter. There’s a device manufactured in the States called an AeroGardener which supplies light, warmth, water and nutrients and allows you to grow salad vegetables in your kitchen even in winter. Can anybody please tell us of their experiences with this product? Is it as good as the manufacturers claim?
Hi afk. Why is it that you have to buy their seeds?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I bought one for my girlfriend last month and she is loving it. Everything grows real fast and real big. The pain is that you pretty much have to buy their seeds, so it can get a little expensive. I’m sure a generic version will be out soon enough on Target/Walmart shelves. The main problem with it is that you can only grow certain plants together. It’s not really a design flaw, but a fact of nature. Overall I highly recommend the thing.

Betty asks…

Does growing your own herbs and veggies, save money?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Herbs sure save money by growing them especially if you use alot. Almost all are perennial or self sowing annuals/biennials. And you can sure wow your friends and family by going to the garden for fresh herbs when you are cooking for them.
I have young leaf lettuce and spinach in about 6 varieties now and will eat a nutrition packed salad a day for a couple months before it gets too hot. I take bags to friends and family. The seed cost $2.00.
Tomatoes should be grown by everyone!
If you have room small fruits are worthwhile too. Look at Heritage or Caroline raspberries, blueberries, bush cherries and blackberries.
The nutrition value of home grown veggies can be many times that found in the supermarket. Many micro nutrients in the soils the large producers grow in are depleted and not replaced.
If you are still not convinced spend a season shopping at a local growers market for your produce. The taste and nutrition should help make up your mind.
Of course you need to do some research to make sure you prepare the beds correctly and plant at the right time in your area. Good luck and bon appetite.

Susan asks…

How to Grow your own Herbs?

I’m looking to grow my own herbs and was wondering if anyone new of something i could use. I live in Boston, and its basically impossible to grow anything. Maybe something indoors? Looking to grow basil, dill, chives, cilantro, etc.. I’m tired of buying herbs from the food store and spending a fortune!

Donald asks…

If you were to grow your own herbs/ spices at home what kind would you grow?

Can you tell me what they taste like

Are they best dried or fresh?

If dried should you keep them whole or crush or ground?

What is the best way to store them?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow thyme, oregano, tarragon, rosemary and chives that are all perennial plants – they come back every year, so they are incredibly low-maintenance!
Then each year I plant green basil, purple basil, cilantro, and parsley….at the end of the season, I transplant these to pots and bring them inside for the winter…usually lasts for a few months..gets me through much of the cold seasons here.
These are all the herbs that I cook with most often.
I prefer fresh herbs much more over dried, although I do dry my own, so I have some on hand at all times!
To dry, I just take a good bunch, rubberband the stems, and hang them upside down to dry for a week or so. Then I scrape the leaves off the stem and store them in containers – I like to keep the leaves whole, as opposed to crushing them.
I also keep a few “herb cubes” in my freezer..pack clean fresh herbs into ice cube trays, top with water, and freeze. Then pop em out and throw into a marked freezer bag…that way I can just toss the herbs into soups and stuff when I want to.

I hope this all helps!
