Sharon asks…

I’m an aspiring Wiccan and I have some questions about herbs…?

If I wanted to began growing my own herbs is their any recommended ones to start with, you know is there any basic herbs I should make sure I have?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You may want to get one of the herb samplers from e-bay to find out if you have an affinity for working with certain herbs.

Mugwort is an important one. I personally like hyssop too, but some people don’t like the smell. Roses are important for a lot of things, but roses are really hard to grow! Orris is pretty much the same as iris (from what I can tell) and then there is yarrow. Borage is good for bees and for courage spells. Catnip and dill for money spells. (Those two are really easy to grow.) Lavender is very popular for cleansing and memory, though I personally dislike the stuff. Chamomile is very good. Morning glory is used for binding spells (since it’s a vine) and is also a good incentive to get up early in the morning to harvest you herbs. If the morning glory flower has closed up then it’s too late and too hot to harvest your herbs and they won’t smell as good as if you had harvested them earlier in the day. Violets are very good to have but hard to grow.

I’m very fond of milkweed as a magical tool but I have yet to find it in any book. Same with lilac, actually, though I think lilac has been listed as something “calming and cleansing” or similar. You’ll start to get an instinct for this sort of thing after a while.

Joseph asks…

Where can I find recipes that start from scratch. I grow my own vegetables and herbs.?

Answers on how to combine different already prepared foods cannot help me. I make my mustard from seeds, ketchup/spaghetti sauce from tomatoes, baked beans from fresh picked beans, etc.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I must admit I am amazed at the number of US recipe sites that comprise recipes that require little more than opening tins. Especially when using fresh ingredients are healthier and make cooking fun. I too make all my stuff from scratch – I cook and freeze surplus tomatoes to use as sauce bases, and cook my own chickpeas/garbanzos for making curries and hummous – the latter being far better then those that come out of a tin and way cheaper.

I’d recommend getting a recipe book that enables you to do a range of foods until you find ones that you like but don’t require hours of preparation. Also I find that the prep gets quicker with experience. One of my favourite authors is Nigel Slater who does a range of books and I use his recipes constantly because they are tasty, different and don’t take me hours.

I anticipate that you are in the US, if so you can get his books from Amazon at the site below.

If you want to try food from the UK, one of the best sites I know is the BBC web site which has an excellent search facility and different types of cusine, again see the link below.

Have fun!

Mandy asks…

whats cheaper to buy herbs or to grow my own in pots?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It’s cheaper to grow your own from seed. We have lots of herbs in our garden, Mint,Oregano,Basil,Rosemary,Chives,Sage,Parsley,Thyme,Lemon Thyme,Lemon Verbena,Marjoram etc, some from seed but most from tiny plants. They require very little attention apart from weedind & watering & can be dried & put in jars or frozen straight from the plant. Do try it

Susan asks…

I want to grow my own herbs?

Where can i find seeds or starters, for basil, rosemary and the such?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Your local garden center or nursery. And come spring, often even home improvement stores that have “home & garden” section will have both plants and seeds.

Ken asks…

Growing herbs in upstate new york?

I’m looking to grow my own herbs this year… I cook a lot and I don’t like having to pay $5-$10 for flavorless dry herbs when I can grow them at home.

I’m looking to grow basil, parsley, cilantro, mint, sage, and lavender. I intend on growing them in their own individual containers hanging over a railing, as we have a family of rabbits living underneath our deck.

Where can I buy the seeds? When should I start growing them?

Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Walk into any hardware store, or a Target or Wal-mart. They all have those seeds. You’ll need containers, soil, and plenty of sunlight. It is still a bit cold to start the seeds outside, so use a sunny window for now. Then when it warms up, move the herbs outside.

If you get too many herbs, and need to trim the plants, go ahead and trim the extra herbs, then hang them upside down to dry. Fresh dried herbs taste better than store bought.

Sharon asks…

Help with growing herbs?

I want to create a herb garden but I don’t know what herbs to grow. Also, does anyone know anything about herb to herb companion growing?
oh. right. sorry. I live in Australia, in the Central West part of NSW

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi; Why not grow herbs you may use in cooking? Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley _Italian and curled, coriander.
They can all be grown now. Herb to herb companion planting I dont think is a big issue, but alot of herbs are used as companion planting with vegetables. Eg, garlic with roses (to keep aphids away), wormwood in the vegie garden to keep white moths at bay, etc. Go to your local nursery and see what herbs they have in stock, im sure you will find plenty that you just MUST have and goodluck. Im sure you will love growing your own herbs.
Cheers

Richard asks…

Growing herbs at home!?

As I am getting a bigger interest in cooking, I was thinking about to start growing some herbs. Do you grow the outside or indoors? I live in the UK so its pretty cold outside at the minute. What are the best herbs to grow? Is it just pot and soil needed? any help would be appreciated

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are many books on growing herbs – have a browse in your local bookshop. Basically, grow spearmint, basil, parsley, marjoram, chives, thyme, lemon thyme and summer savory for savoury dishes. Rosemary is nice for roast lamb, but it grows into a large bush. You will need about 15 inches square of ground for each herb if you want to have plenty, as pots don’t really yield enough to be useful. Herbs do very well in raised beds. Thyme and marjoram last all winter, the others die off in winter, but you can cut and dry them for winter use. Your own dried herbs make really tasty stuffings and forcemeat.
I should buy seed packets and follow the directions.

Carol asks…

Tips on growing herbs?

I want to grow my own herbs over the winter since I just got the idea now. I want to grow mint, and oregano. This is obviously going to be an indoor project and i might sell some of what I grow. So for those experienced, what are some do’s and dont’s of growing herbs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are several ways on growing herbs indoors your best bet is getting a growing cabinet or constructing one yourself. There are also smaller growers like http://www.mysecretpantry.com/departments.asp?dept=39
and believe it or not there are hundreds of tips and help from people who grow cannabis (legally) I would search around dutch websites(translated in English) they always seem to be on top of everything new and exciting when it comes to gardening. There are very simple ways of growing plants/herbs indoors just depends on your workspace and the amount of herbs you plan on growing a simple indoor window box would work. I would Just google for more information

Donna asks…

GARDENING: How to grow your own food?

My fiance was wanting me to ask this question… How do you grow your own food? I personally have a general idea and know how better than he does because I grew up gardening with my father. I was so young then, so having someone throw out tips or anything helpful would be great, because I know I would need a good brushing up.

So, what do we need to know, do…? What’s the perfect weather to start planting seed? What kind of chemicals and stuff would we need to help protect the plants from parasites and what kind of things should we set out to protect the plants from any type of animal? Anything will help us.

Thank you. (:

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow tomatoes & herbs, have a patio garden (all in pots & hanging baskets). I start in the spring, when there is no chance of frost. In my area (SW Ontario, Canada), the rule of thumb is to plant at the end of May. My lettuce grows best when the days are warm & nights are cool (Spring & Fall). Some plants are sensitive. Also, the seed packs will have instructions on them. Most seeds should be started indoors in early spring. Some plants like squash, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, corn & beans are best started in the garden.

Those are some ideas, just read labels & google lots!

Mary asks…

Does anyone grow their own herbs?

I want to grow parsley and I was wondering if anyone grows their own and if it is better than buying them at a store

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grew some basil and some oregano once and it was awesome. The basil was so strong, it was almost hot. When the herbs got just to the point of budding, but not yet blooming, I cut them down and hung them upside down in the garage to dry. This forces all of the essential oils out to the foliage prior to drying. I then cut the stems to fit into mason jars. I didn’t crush them right away. I only did that when I used them. This preserves the oils and keeps the flavor intense long after you cut them.

Sandra asks…

Does anyone grow their own herbs?

I want to grow parsley and I was wondering if anyone grows their own and if it is better than buying them at a store?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow parsley–curly leaf and Italian and they are much better tasting than store bought. And I can just take off what I need as I need it. In my last yard, my parsley was uncontrollable–it overwintered, spread seeds everywhere, I was pulling it up, giving it away, my kids were ODing on it. It was crazy.

I also grow chives–that is so cool. It’s oniony and garlicky but delicate all in one. And the green is so pretty in all sorts of dishes. I grow that in a pot tha I planted oh, 9 years ago? That one packet of seeds has really paid off!

Basil–I plant it every year. To me it really signifies summer is here. While I was at Home Depot gathering some new plants, an elderly woman told me she picks her basil leaves and puts them in freezer containers as is, and she uses them all winter. I can’t wait to try this tip!

Lavender–I’m growing this for the first time this year. Not quite sure what to do with it yet, but I love lavender and just enjoy sniffing it every time I go past.

Let’s see, I planted Thyme, oregano and cilantro

Mint– I have to disagree with Christa. I’ve grown mint in my yard since 2000 and never had any problems–not like the killer parsley! We use it in watermelon, mint and lime salad, iced tea with mint, hot mint tea, tobouli salad and just to chew on.

I guarantee that once you start growing herbs, you’ll be hooked. The scent, the taste, the usefulness, the ease…Enjoy! 🙂

Michael asks…

how do i grow my own herb?

im trying to grow my own herbs and i dont know where to start, plus im on a poor mans budget so help me please find the cheapest, idiot proof ways to growing my own herbs….

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most herbs are really pretty forgiving. They like a well drained soil so if you’re using potting soil, mix in some sand and/or vermiculite (very cheap and a little goes a long way).

Herbs need full sun, too so be sure you have a southern exposure for at least 4-6 hours per day.

During the spring it’s easy to find seed packets because everyone is getting ready to plant. At this time of year, I’m not sure what you’ll find in the way of seeds but if you have a local nursery, you should still find some packets available. If they’re packaged for 2008, you may also get a price break – the season is over.

I will assume you already know what kinds of herbs you want, but I would just give you one suggestion:

Mints are VERY pervasive so I’d keep those in a separate pot – otherwise they’ll invade everything else.

Have fun and welcome to the world of Herb Gardens!!

What temp is too cold for growing herbs?

when it got warmer i started my own tiny herb garden outside. it’s supposed to drop to about 40 degeres tonight. Should i cover them? Will they be ok?

GardenersCardiff answers:

If they are very young plants cover them.
I lost some sage this winter but it was -18. But my bay and chives and mint and thyme survived and are thriving again

Richard asks…

What herbs and vegetables can I grow indoors?

I love cooking (A lot) and would love to try growing some of my own vegetables or herbs, but I don’t have a garden!
I do however have a fair bit of inside windowledge space by windows that get a lot of light during the day, does anyone know any vegetables, herbs or anything that would be suitable for growing in these conditions? And how would I go about it?
Should probably say, I already grow some plants/flowers etc inside and they actually seem to grow fine (Including an orchid oddly)

GardenersCardiff answers:

Not really anything will grow well inside. The light is never enough and they tend to grow long and spindly. For more knowledgeable answers try www.gardenweb.com which has Forums for every kind of plant question, free and no hassle.

William asks…

i want to grow my own herbs. What herbs are suited to the same pot,?

I preferably would like to grow corainder, sage, rosemary, parsley, basil and thyme.
can I just pot them any old way, or am I best keeping basil away from sage for example.
I heard 1 type can take over, just wasn’t sure which one, if it’s mint, that’s grand, cos wasn’t going to plant it anyway..

GardenersCardiff answers:

You need a large pot or at least several pots if you want them to continue to do well, and you need to decide if you want to mix annuals with perennials or if you’d prefer to have one or the other. Anything in the mint family is a bad idea to plant together. Spearmint, peppermint, some basils, lemon balm, bee balm (aka bergamot), catnip and even fennel are all going to run everything else out of the garden, if you want an of these, plant them seperately and give them lots of room. Other than that I’d keep rosemary seperate also b/c it doesn’t like water as much as some of the others. Honestly they all do better if in the ground, but depending on you and where you are some herbs do better than others in or out of pots. I would not start planting now though the season is getting to late, it’s almost harvesting time. I usually start my garden from seeds indoors at the end of January or the beginning of Feburary, that way if something should not take well I always have the option of getting an established plant. I usually then add bits and bobs that I find but I stop around the beginning of May.
I hope this helps.

What are essential herbs to grow for use in Wiccan rituals?

I’m new to Wicca, and i’m teaching myself with books and the internet. I’d like to start growing some of my own herbs for use in rituals, and I have no idea which ones I should start with, or really how to use them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

GardenersCardiff answers:

You sound just like me when I started! I walked into a store and asked what kind of herbs should I get because I just started…she asked me what spell I was doing. It really got me thinking, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of different herbs and neither is better than the one before it.

Bottom line, think about what kind of magic you want to do overall, then research the common herbs used.

Just a few common herbs that are used in a variety of things:

Lavender (aka ‘eye of newt’)
Peppermint
Dragon’s Blood (it’s the resin from Palm trees)
Mandrake root
Chamomile

Why some of the strange names? Because during the times of the witch hunts, if people were convinced that you used ‘eye of newt’ in your spells, then they wouldn’t be suspicious if you were out harvesting plain old ‘lavender’…

Mary asks…

When is the best time to plant?

I want to grown my own herbs like: Parsley, Basil, Sage.. things like that. When is the best time of year to plant them, and is there a special soil, way to plant them or do you just plant them like everything else?
freesumpin: I live in Ohio, USA

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most perennial herbs are hardy plants that are able to survive winter, but one should check their specific zone map to be sure. Most Herbs prefer to grow in well-drained soils, and soils that are heavy should be amended with organic matter to loosen the clay structure. Another method of improving drainage is to plant the herbs in raised beds. Plants that are marginally hardy (such as rosemary & Greek oregano) should be dug up, potted, and wintered indoors. They can be moved back to the garden the following spring.

Herbs are classified either as *Annuals, *Biennials, or *Perennials. Annual herbs are usually grown from seed; they grow, flower, and produce seed during one season, and then die. Biennial herbs grow for two seasons, flowering the second year only. Perennial herbs, once established, come back each season. Some herbs are Tender Perennials; these do not survive severe winters and are best grown as annuals or wintered indoors.

Chris asks…

What is the best way to dry herbs?

I have been growing my own herbs and would really like to know the best way to dry them. Thank you!

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are several ways you can dry herbs – natural, oven and microwave.

With the natural i tie them in a bunch and hang them upside down in a brown paper bag and put it in a dark place.

Oven – lay them out on an oven tray and put in a slow/low heat oven for several hours.

Microwave – place on a paper towel in the microwave and cook on defrost a minute or so at a time.

Not real sure about the oven and microwave i usually just do it by ear so to speak. You could probably check this out on the net.

James asks…

Which of the following best supports the author’s viewpoint regarding the value of herbal healers?

Herbal Healers

You may not realize it, but herbs are everywhere in your life. The mustard you put on your hot dog is made from an herb. Many of the items in your salad are herbs. Herbs add flavor to your food—basil can add a hint of mint to your cup of tea, ginger can make your food spicy, and dill can add the taste of pickles to any dish.

More than Flavorful
There are other uses for herbs besides adding extra flavor to your favorite foods. Because herbs are plants that are filled with vitamins and minerals, people have used them as medicine for centuries. Some scientists believe that herbs should be used in addition to any medication prescribed by professionals. Many agree that herbs are a natural, tangible way of bringing balance and health back to one who is sick.

People have used herbs for medicinal purposes dating as far back as 2700 BCE, when a Chinese herb book listed 365 plants and their uses. The Chinese Emperor Chi’en Nung named the book Pen Tsao. Ancient Egyptians also used herbs such as garlic and indigo as flu remedies. Even American Indians, Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas had sophisticated herb-based healing systems, though medicinal herbs in those times were usually mixed with forms of magic and superstition. As time has progressed, however, herbs have been put to scientific tests, and many have proven to possess remarkable curing powers.

Here is a sampling of herbs that are commonly used today for healing purposes.

Chamomile
Having a fresh aroma that resembles apples, this delicate herb is a favorite in many gardens. This popular beverage herb can calm nerves, relieve stomach distress, prevent or heal ulcers, and help fight infection.

Garlic
This herb, a favorite among chefs around the world, is a root that grows in the form of a bulb. Each bulb contains cloves of garlic. Garlic is a strong, natural antibiotic. Before penicillin, it was often given to fight infections. It can also reduce cholesterol levels and help prevent the formation of blood clots that trigger heart attacks. Many call garlic the miracle herb because it has so many health benefits.

Slippery Elm Bark
Rich in nutrients and easy to digest, this sugary plant can even be made into food. Slippery elm bark can soothe sore throats and upset stomachs. It is often found in cough drops and throat lozenges.

Spearmint and Peppermint
Often popular flavors, these herbs can do more than add the flavor of mint to a cup of tea or piece of candy. Tests have proven that they can reduce the chance of indigestion or upset stomach if taken after eating a large meal.

Devil’s Claw
Though it has no odor, devil’s claw does have a bitter taste. Like garlic, this herb is a root. Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of this herb in treating joint conditions, such as arthritis and small joint disease. Devil’s claw can also help those who suffer from lower backaches. It can even be applied topically to sores and other skin lesions.

Ginger
Another herbal root, ginger is useful for the prevention and treatment of mild to moderate motion sickness or indigestion. In fact, researchers found that powdered ginger is more effective than many common motion sickness medications. Ginger can also help with the body’s circulation of blood.

Herbal Roots
Where did all of these herbs come from? Herbs originated from all different parts of the world. For example, popular herbs such as chives, gale, and juniper were first cultivated in Europe. Other herbs such as sage, lavender, and rosemary came from the Mediterranean region. Ginger, lemon grass, and lime herbs originated in Asia, and sesame came from Africa. America is even believed to be the origin of some herbs, such as oilseed, pumpkin, and chile.

In a recent study of 76 popular herbs, however, most had Asian origins. Many historians believe that this is due to China’s early use of herbs for medicinal purposes. Below is a map that demonstrates the number of herbs that came from different parts of the world based on the recent study.

Research before Remedy
Should herbs be used more often as forms of medicine? Not all herbs are beneficial, and it is important to study herbs before eating too many of them. In fact, some herbs, such as foxglove, will make you feel sick instead of help you feel better. But the use of herbs for medicinal purposes is growing, and it could not hurt to research the topic further and discover more about what can be one of Mother Nature’s more helpful contributions!

A. Many herbs possess remarkable curing powers.
B. Herbs are plants that are filled with vitamins and minerals.
C. Herbs can provide positive medicinal effects if used properly.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I would say the answer is a many herbs possess remarkable curing powers

though he mentions b this is more a fact than the gist of the article

Also he does not much cover using them properly

so the gist of the article seems to talk about some of these healing powers so that is the one I would chose

Ken asks…

Is this enough presents for my family on Christmas?

I believe that Christmas is a very spiritual holiday and should be celebrated with jesus in mind, which is why I don’t expect many gifts for Christmas, (though my parents spoil me anyway xD) but I really enjoy giving my family as much as I can, and I was wondering if you would be happy if you received what I got for them. I chose to use my own money this year, which wasn’t easy considering I am only 15 and can’t get a job yet. But I did earn the money I needed, and thanks in advance for your help with this question.
Mom-2 homemade embroidered pillows, a homemade makeup case, a catholic book about rediscovering faith(she will LOVE this!! :)), 3 mary kay items that are on her wish list, a bath and body works candle in her favorite scent,a homemade picture frame with a picture of me and her, and for her stocking a homemade breast cancer magnet and a mini book about what I love about her.
Dad-personalized kindle cover, boston red sox toaster, cookbook incorporating his favorite show(diners drive-ins and dives)ove glove, amazon card($15), homemade picture frame, homemade magnet, homemade book why i love him.
For both mom and dad together a $25 olive garden gift card.
Brother- 1 year car magazine subscription, $15 i-tunes card, homemade magnet, video ame organizer (hangs on wall and holds 10 games, 2 controllers, and a xbox headset.)
And for everyone all together I made 2 ribbon christmas trees for a decoration next year.
Do you think that’s enough? Christmas is so stressful..

GardenersCardiff answers:
