indoor garden – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-1003/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-1003/#respond Thu, 11 Dec 2014 20:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-1003/

John asks…

Which store has the best ‘Garden Supply’ varieties?

This weekend the 18th and 19th I am starting my 2009 Vegetable Garden and I need to buy quite a few Garden stuffs, that’s why I’m asking.

Thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

It might help if you said where you are.

Local growers and suppliers are the best source of everything that grows well, and fit your needs.

Big box stores have all that expensive real estate and advertising to recoup with your purchases. Local growers don’t. You benefit greatly!

Sandy asks…

Indoor garden advice?

I want to grow an indoor garden with my 3 year old daughter. What are some easy plants to grow, veggies, herbs or whatever.. I’d like to grow tomatoes, but I’ve been reading up on it and it looks like quite the process. What’s best for someone starting out (and someone without a green thumb!) I’ve heard of using teabags in the soil to help plants grow. Should I try this? Any other advice?

I’d like to grow everything from seeds, and I’d like to try at least 3 different plants (or more!)

Also, I’m in Ontario, Canada, so there’s lots of sun in the summer, but not so much in the winter, spring and fall.. plus it gets pretty cold by the window I plan on using for sunlight.

Thanks for reading!! 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

You might try getting some grow lights from your hardware store or garden supply, check for different sizes to find which will work for you. While grow lights may not be cost effective you may be able to grow a few plants indoors.perhaps you could start some plants indoors & plant them outdoors later. You might try lettuce in a windowbox and parsley & chives in pots to start. Try experimenting with additional plants to see what works. Good luck!

Susan asks…

Which is cheaper getting garden supplies & plants from a chain store (WalMart, Lowe’s etc) or from a nursery?

My mothers front yard needs some sprucing up, but neither she nor I have a lot of money to spend. I would like to plant some flowers and/or small shrubs, nothing too fancy, just want to make it look nice. It’s an activity that my kids (6 & 8) are willing to help with so it also can not be overly complicated. I have NOT been successful in the past with trying to have a flower bed, they look great for a little bit, but eventually just die. So any tips on what to plant, where to get the lowest price, or ways to make them live longer would be greatly appreciated! ~Thank You~

GardenersCardiff answers:

Walmart would be the cheapest… However, you could check for online coupons and watch for sales at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Nurseries tend to be a bit pricier.

As an annual flower, Marigolds are pretty easy to plant and take little fuss to grow. Just clip off the dead flowers and you will be rewarded with even more blooms.

Wave Petunia would be another pretty flower with little fuss…they plant them in abundance around my city they are inexpensive and give off quite a show for months.

Another favorite is Alyssum…very fragrent low growing border plant. Although this is an annual it reseeds itself and comes back year after year.

They all need to be watered. At least 2 or 3 times a week if the weather gets above 90.

My favorite go to web site for all my gardening questions.
Have fun… You and your children are building some good memories.

Donald asks…

how can I make essential oils for myself?

I grow my own medicinal herbs and would like to make essential oils from them.

GardenersCardiff answers:

WEll essenntial oils can be extraced from plants in several methods. One is by crushing and choppping them. Then further you chose your method by the property of the essential oil. If it has a low boiling point, you can easily fracion distill it. If it decomposes before boiling off you can use simple solvent extraction. Bo hify kits required!!

Thomas asks…

How can I start my own indoor garden (grow my own produce)?

I’m interested in growing my own produce, but I live in an apartment in the city so I don’t have a garden to grow produce in. How can I grow a good amount of produce indoors and what are the best veggies/fruits to grow under such conditions?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Herbs is the only thing that you can grow indoors. Produce must be grown in a green house or outside. You cannot grow produce under lights or in window sills indoors.
You can however grow some produce in containers on a balcony if it gets direct sun for 6 or more hours. Don’t waste you time trying anything other than herbs indoors.

Donna asks…

How hard is it to grow your own veggies?

with an obvious upcoming depression/recession [my sales are down badly and my sister a company director cant get work]

should I start growing my own veggies in the yard? As long as you have food and shelter it doesnt seem like a big deal.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Growing some vegetables can be really rewarding if you like growing plants. You can use a container or plant in the yard. What you can grow depends on your climate. I grow fruit trees and have berries. If you can grow extra food, you can barter with it for other goods. If you freeze and/or can, you can provide much of your own produce.

I used to grow beans that could be eaten as green beans and some left to mature for dried beans for soup or chili. Herbs are really fun, too!

The important thing to remember is that growing plants need water regularly. You can’t skip or your plants may die. It isn’t difficult and it need not be too time consuming.

Gardening can become a great passion and it can enhance your pleasure in cooking and eating to grow varieties you can’t buy at the store.

My best advice would be to start small and see how you like it.

Charles asks…

Looking for outdoor garden supplies in Vancouver, BC?

I’m making a fountain for my garden and am not sure exactly what material to use or where to find them. I want it to be three shallow dishes of different sizes that are slightly tilted, so the water pours from one to the other.

I would love some suggestions on what type of dishes I should use…I was thinking some kind of metal?

And some ideas on where I can find these dishes would be much appreciated!

Thanks so much!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Look in the phone book under Gardening supplies

Donald asks…

Where do you shop for garden supplies in San Francisco?

I really like Plant Warehouse!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try Sloat garden center out by the Zoo. Easy to get to and lots of parking.

Susan asks…

Where can I buy garden supplies fo a cold climate.?

I live in an area that does not have a long enough summer to have a full harvest. Where can I buy material to start my garden indoors?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Most garden centers will have what you need or can order it for you. Just tell them what you want to do and they should be able to make solid recommendations.

Or, You can also get an Aerogarden (I’ve seen them at Bad Bath and Beyond or you can mailorder one), start your outdoor garden in it and move the plants outdoors or leave it as an indoor garden and then continue to grow indoors through the winter.

Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-208/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-208/#respond Tue, 25 Sep 2012 12:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-208/

George asks…

Would you ever grow your own food?

If so, what would you grow/raise?
And, if you don’t mind, please tell me why you might want to grow/raise your own food. I’m sincerely interested.

GardenersCardiff answers:

ABSOLUTELY. I grow tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, yellow squash, and jalapenos every year. Tomatoes are definitely my biggest crop. If you ate a tomato grown in your yard, you’d understand. I can’t even begin to tell you how much more flavorful home-grown tomatoes are compared to the hot-house variety you buy at a grocery store. Go to a farmers market and buy a couple – you’ll never want to eat those tasteless hot house tomatoes again.

Since I can’t grow my vegetables all year round, and I can’t eat all my vegetables before they go bad, I make things with them that can be canned like homemade salsa, marinara sauce, and dill pickles.

I also keep an herb garden all year round…fresh herbs are so much more flavorful and fresh than using the dried variety. In the winter months, I use an aerogarden (hydroponic, indoor garden) for my herbs. The best part is that my herbs are ready when I need them, I don’t have to buy them, and they don’t go bad before I can use them.

James asks…

Is growing your own food worthwhile?

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you have the room and the time then yes it is.

Donna asks…

With food prices going up is it cheaper to grow your own food?

I don’t have to buy land because i have a backyard.

Farm equipment: wouldn’t i just need some garden tools? it’s not like i need farm vehicles.

Fertilizer: is composting cheap? can’t i just my own poo or something like that?

Seeds are cheaper than buying the actual vegetable with all the packaging and marketing i have to pay for, right?

What about water?

GardenersCardiff answers:

In some cases, yes but if you consider all the expenses that are needed and the labor, the benefits are nominal. You do get much better tasting food, I can attest to that. The market for seeds have also gone through the roof. See the order catalogs. However, it’s not only for the savings that a person should have a garden, it’s for the advantage of being self sufficient. You should not use poo from creatures that eat meat in your compost, but it’s not very costly to make your own. Right now is the time to start one with the fall season arriving, for leaves and most people still mowing their grass, you can have lots of material just for harvesting it. Should we have a food shortage or by some catastrophe the food markets goes awry, you will be glad to have your own food supply. I strongly recommend that every able bodied person have their own garden. Our relatives used to come visit us once a year when the corn was ready for picking, so there’s also a social factor involved. Water is a big factor in gardening. Mother nature will not always cooperate when moisture is needed, so you do have to make some provisions to irrigate when those things don’t happen. It doesn’t take a lot of land for a family garden. You can grow lots of things in a small area, so good luck if you decide to go ahead with it.
