Gardens ?????

There Are Tv Shows That Give You A Chance To Win A Makeover For Your Garden

Can You Give Me Some Websites So I Can Submit My Garden

Thanks xxx

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try hgtv.com. You can sign up if you want to be in any of their shows. Most of the shows do ask for a budget from you since they only supply the designer and an added thousand dollars (or less) to your already existing budget.

If you are planning to do it anyway and pay for it then it would be a good idea since they help with the planning, execution and all that other stuff.

Sharon asks…

How do you create a community garden on a slight incline?

I’m a novice to gardening and we are planning to create a community garden. The area suggested is on a slight incline. Maybe 20-30 degree. What are the particular challenges involved in creating a garden in such a landscape and also how would you do a community garden in such an area? We’ll need a deer fence too. Please help!
Our garden is only 20×20 big … please advise.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Try using a raised bed garden which conforms to the incline.

Mark asks…

How do I start a garden in a small space?

I have a small area for gardening and have never tried before but I would like to start my own garden. I know I want to plant tomatoes and other veggies, anything that is simple to grow. When do I plant each particular plant?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hey there – good on you for starting your veggie garden. 🙂

It really depends what you want to plant as different things obviously harvest at different times.

Try these sites to help you out.

http://www.yates.com.au/garden-guide/videos/growing-vegetables/

This second site will also help you out with ‘how’ to grow, not only ‘when’.

Another option is to check the back of seedling packets OR a good bet is whatever is at your local nursery now is what is in season.

Good luck & happy growing.

Ruth asks…

Is a grow tent good for indoor gardening?

I will move into an apartment next month and I really like gardening. I want to purchase a grow tent for indoor gardening. Does any one know whether it is easy to use? Or should I buy any other accessories?

GardenersCardiff answers:

With a grow tent, you can enjoy the fun of gardening indoor even your home is not spacious. What’s more, a grow tent may be used in conjunction with a hydroponics system, which allows you to garden and grow plants without the use of soil. This sounds really amazing for those who live at the top of an apartment building and have nowhere to get rich soil to for encourage plants to thrive.

If you are planning to get a grow tent for indoor gardening, I suppose you would like to use it with the hydroponics system. In order to make the best use out of the grow tent, you should also get a few indoor gardening supplies to round out and complete your plant growing setup.

One of the most important hydroponics supplies is indoor grow light. The grow tents are usually square shaped and can be totally enclosed so the grow lights will take the place of sunlight most of the time. Use the indoor grow lights to mimic natural sunlight is good for your plants.

Since there is no soil for your plants to thrive, the plant food is another necessity. The plant food which is known as nutrient can be mixed into water to create a nutrient solution in hydroponic gardening. Another advantage of use the nutrient is that you can use different amounts of it to suit specific types of plants at certain stages of growth.

Using hydroponics has many advantages but there is still a drawback that: because the crown of the plant is always submerged in water, it gets rot easily. You can use nets or trays to prevent this from happening, and use pumps to change the water level so that the roots can take up the liquid food.

Ken asks…

What supplies would I need to start growing bhut jolokias and chocolate habaneros inndoors?

I just bought some of these seeds and I would like to start growing them but I don’t think the conditions outside are very good right now. I live in New York and it is pretty cold here. I don’t really know anything about gardening, so any help would be appreciated.
Also, how much would all the supplies cost?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi Andrew,

This is Ricks Picks. I work in the Garden Department for The Home Depot. The biggest issue with getting you indoor garden going successfully inside is making sure that your new plants are receiving the full spectrum of light. Having a grow light will be a must for successful propagation of your garden Jolokias and Habaneros.

Initially, getting the seedlings to sprout can be done with your window box and a standard grow light found at The Home Depot or other hardware supply store. As the plant gets bigger the light requirement will increase. Temperature is also a key factor in getting your plants to grow well. LED’s are great for giving out a good light spectrum but do not produce the heat needed to help your plants grow to their full potential. With spring not too far away, it may be enough to just get your young seedlings to sprout and then come spring, transfer them to on outside area that gets more light.

Fluorescent bulbs are a great way to start off our indoor gardening adventure. To maximize your results, you will need to switch you bulbs out at the different stages of growth of your vegetables. The cool white bulbs give off more of the blue light spectrum which is great for the initial growth of your vegetables. The warm white bulb gives off more of the red light spectrum and is good for your plants blooms. To keep your project affordable, remember that you will need about 20-40 watts per square foot of growing area. Check out your local nursery supply for a heated seed starter that should help in keeping the “feet” of your new seedlings nice and warm.

Best of luck with your indoor gardening project. Be sure to take pictures of each step you take and share it with all of us!

This has been one of Ricks Picks

Mark asks…

Where can I buy the supplies (as least expensive as possible) to start my own balcony garden?

To grow vegetables/fruits etc. I live in an apartment and would like to grow these in containers on my balcony. Where in my city (Austin, TX) could I purchase the things I need?

Any tips are welcome as well!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Watch for sales at your local Home Depot, and Lowes. Walmart and Target have good prices also.
The main thing to remember is keep the soil moist and not to over water, or dry out. I live in a climate similar to TX and it gets really hot in the summer. I check my containers every morning and every evening.

Good Luck

What is the name of the garden supply place in Stanton, MO?

I’m looking for the garden supply shop/statuary just off Highway 44 in Stanton, MO. It’s either on the road (Hwy. W/Y ?) leading to Meramec Caverns or it’s on the outer service road near the Toy Museum. I tried an on-line search and found other garden supply places in the area but the one near I-44 and Stanton exit is what I’m specifically looking for.

Thanks for any help.

Gardening tips….bell pepper?

Does anyone have any gardening tips for growing bell peppers?

GardenersCardiff answers:

What, is cyanne2ak nuts?? The plant HAS to flower to produce peppers!! The pepper comes from the flower.(a very small white flower about the size of a dime) I have been growing Bell peppers in the N.E. For 40 years. Plant seedlings outside after the threat of your last frost. Water and fertilize with all of your other vegetable plants in the garden. I plant mine right next to my tomato plants. They are very hearty and easy to grow. Good luck and BON APPITITE!

Sounds like you need to do some terracing and spend some time learning and deciding what you want. Visit some gardens, hang out at garden centers, look through books, and visit websites.

Mary asks…

Would you tend to agree or disagree that people are rediscovering vegetable gardening in America?

Almost year-round, when I visit Home Depot and Orchard Supply Hardware or any nursery, it tends to be active with people buying supplies for their garden. Also, I have been seeing television programs focusing on neighborhood gardens; there are even websites about “living off of the grid” that incorporate how to live off of your patio garden. What is your view on all this?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I feel the prices of food today is contributing to the fact more people are growing their own. I am totally stunned at the prices I see at the market. We have been growing a garden for about thirty years and the funny thing is,we have no place to really grow one. If there is a will there is a way. We have grown just about everything there is but all in large pots and tubs around the pool and patio. The funniest one I can remember growing are the cantaloupes. We had them in pots but the fruit is so heavy they needed support as they couldn’t lay on the ground to grow. This is kind of embarrassing to say, but I put them in a pair of panty hose and tied them to the fence behind. The panty hose allowed them to grow quite large and supported their weight.Like I said, if there is a will there is a way and I refuse to pay the prices of today’s food when I can grow my own. I think more people should try doing this. It’s fun and fun for the kids. Kind of brings the family together again.

Donald asks…

Where can I get supplies for a Japanese garden diorama?

I need to make a small diorama of a japanese garden (not a zen garden) does anyone know where I could find some good supplies for it?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I guess you’d just use the same stuff that hobby shops sell for making the landscaping for model railroads, etc…. Grass, trees, bushes, gravel, etc. To make a flowering cherry tree for a diorama I once made (for the opera Madame Butterfly), which was seen through the sliding doors, I glued tiny bits of scrunched toilet paper to a multi-branch twig I cut outdoors… Looked pretty convincing!
