Sandra asks…

Raised garden bed question?

I am going to be planting a raised garden in my backyard this spring. The zone that I live in 3B. Since I am planting in raised beds, will this change my zone to a 4? The majority of the vegetables that I am planting are zoned for my 3B zone, but some that I want to plan our zoned for 4.

Thanks so much 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

Your gardening zone will not change. If you are interested in raised bed gardening check this site and get the book. I have been using this method for years with great results.

Since you give no information on your location I can not give you specific guidelines on varieties. I suggest that you contact your County Agent and you state land grant university for research based, region specific information on what and when to plant. The information is free. Also look into having soil test done $10 – $15 – well worth the $.

Good luck.

Steven asks…

What kind of plants can I grow in a zone 2b garden?

preferably plants that do well in shade or partial sun. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Unfortunately plants that will thrive in a zone 2 are not many.
Ones for shade:
OSTRICH FERN
Matteuccia pennsylvanica (M. Struthiopteris var. Pennsylvanica)
GREEN MOUND ALPINE CURRANT
Ribes alpinum ‘Green Mound’
LUXURIANT FRINGED BLEEDING HEART
Dicentra x `Luxuriant`
Aconitum (Monkshood)

There are a couple types of Yarrow, Summer Pastels and Paprika are particularly nice varieties that are zone 2 they are full sun.
Most of your columbines do well with partial sun, especially since they don’t like hot sun.
Physostegia or Obedient plants like full sun to partial shade.

As far as trees go, paper birch are also hardy to a zone 2.
Hopefully this helps.

Paul asks…

Zone 5 rock garden – what can I plant?

Hi! I have a pile of rocks in the yard that is partly shaded, all I have right now are weeds and lily of the valley. I want to plant some perenials, but I don’t know were to start, I love poppys and gazanias… I am in a Zone 5.

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you really want free, professional information call your County Agent. You will get research based information specific to your region.

OK bring it on – every time I advise calling the Count Agent I get “thumbs down”.

Your County Agent is a wonderful, free information provider. Your tax dollars pay for the service so use it.
Happy gardening
