Donna asks…

Could someone please tell me the title of this movie?

The movie’s most probably done in the 90s. I remember this kid (boy – thin, cute, looks a bit like Harry Potter/Daniel Radcliffe) who sold his soul in exchange for a couple? of wishes to the devil’s secretary – who’s a black guy, as I can remember. He wanted to be cool and he even had the coolest clothes and asked for a husband for his mom – the husband, however, didn’t turn out to be who he wanted to be. He also wished for a car, to impress the girls – he ended up returning all of these though. They had to device a plan in which they break the deal off so that he could have his soul back again. There was a girl in the movie too, a pretty one, who turned out to be extremely UGLY, freakishly tall before she sold her soul for a couple of wishes (to be cool, pretty, a model, etc.)- whose mom had a weird liking to miniature decorations of gnomes(?) in their garden. They succeeded in the end because they found a way to break the deal they made with the devil’s “secretary”. Please help! 😐

Try “I Was a Teenage Faust”

Richard asks…

Please can you critique my Harry Potter oneshot story?

I called it “Freds Goodbye”
Not really original but its all I could think of 😛

It was dark. Snow was falling heavily into a large garden with a long table placed in the middle. The hedges that were placed around the table were full of small garden gnomes eating strange looking food and wearing not their usual pointy hats but sparkly Christmas ones that you get in crackers. A young, matured boy was sitting on the edge of the table watching two gnomes pull a small cracker apart. It gave a great bang and fireworks flew out of it, along with another Christmas hat with miniature witches that flew around the rim on their brooms singing Christmas songs, a silly joke and a fake wand. The boy had blazing red hair that stood out against the blanket of white snow like a sore thumb. He was very tall and had a kind, happy expression blasting through his eyes. He was wearing a large woolly jumper that had an ‘F’ emblazoned across the chest and his jeans were worn and frayed. He was facing a door that led into a large living room. Lights were on inside and silhouettes of people could be seen dancing and laughing through the windows. He was unknown to them but that did not matter. He wanted them to be having fun, to be celebrating the days they had together. Yet there was someone that the boy realised who wasn’t dancing. Who wasn’t happy looking and celebrating. He was walking towards the door holding a large jumper in his hands. He was running his fingers over a stitching on it. It was an ‘F’. A large golden ‘F’ and it was the same as the one the boy on the table was wearing; only his was a dark green. He looked identical to the boy sitting on the table. His hair bright red, his body long and slender yet his face wasn’t full of happiness. It was sad and un-happy. A pretty, young girl who was dancing with another young, bespectacled boy smiled at him. He forced a smile back, trying to look happy but it was more of a grimace. He opened the door and walked out into the cold. He was wearing a dark green jumper that had a ‘G’ across the chest. He came through the snow and sat down next to the boy, yet it was as if he could not see him. He took not notice that the boy was watching him intently, a kind of happy sadness filling his eyes.
“I still have hope you know, Fred.” George began. He was looking up into the sky; talking to someone he hoped could hear him. “That you’ll come back and we can run the shop together again.” Fred, who was still watching George carefully, smiled and tried to speak back but nothing came out. “I can’t go back there. Not without you.” He lay back onto the table, staring up into the starry sky. Snow was floating down and landing in his hair and eyelashes. “Mum can’t seem to get the fact that you’re dead. She made you a jumper again-” He lifted the jumper off his lap and looked at the ‘F’ carefully, hoping for Fred to come out of it or hoping for him to appear. “-It looks a million sizes too big.” George chuckled. Then he sat up and started to lift his own jumper up, revealing a broad chest with a large phoenix tattooed across his chest. “I’m part of the Order now. Properly. I’ve done a few missions. Only small ones but its still something to keep me occupied.” He placed the other jumper on and stared down at the ‘F’. His eyes filled with tears quietly and when he blinked the fell down his cheeks onto his lap. “All members of the Order have to have a symbol to show that they are part of it. A Phoenix. Most people just wear jackets and stuff with the Phoenix stitched on but I wanted a tattoo. We could have gotten them together you know… if you were here.” Those words struggled to come from his mouth. It was like swallowing ice cubes whole. The way they almost made him vomit when he even thought them. “Mum and Dad can’t even look at me now. They see you in me. They struggle to speak to me. Its like I’m not here anymore.” Fred was still watching his brother, smiling but still sad.

Theres more but it would be too long if I added it all…
I think this one is a lot darker than anything J.K Rowling would write… I wasnt really looking to write like Rowling, I was writing in my style…

GardenersCardiff answers:

You’ve done an excellent job at describing the setting. Not only do I get a vivid mental picture of what the scenery looks like, you’ve chosen words that really develop the sad atmosphere of the story. I can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into this piece. Great job!

Carol asks…

Garden ornaments….statues……Backdrop ideas…?

I wish to purchase a garden ornament but dont just want to stand it on its own looking boring in my garden. Im trying to find some inspiration for backdrops from the net but cant find any. AND my PC is so slow I wonder if anyone can send me some sites with photos for ideas. Its a LARGE garden. We are not talking small garden.

GardenersCardiff answers:

When decorating your garden, use the ‘surprise’ principle. It’s really very easy, especially if you have paths that curve, and high perennials that can ‘hide’ the stuff around the curve. Get whatever ‘fun stuff’ you like, and if you have even just one ‘standard lot’ you’ll have room for at least 10 ‘decorative items.’ You can put one gnome or a group of gnomes either peeking out or ‘working unaware’ under the leaves. You can put a ‘reflection ball’ in a small pond or birdbath in a sunny place where it can sparkle and shine with the sun. You can use things you like, and set them where you want, because it’s your garden. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and at our Flower and Garden Show every year, the people who win the top ‘amateur garden’ prizes aren’t those who use stuff they find in books or on the web or a ‘formula’ from a book. They spend time in their gardens, they love their gardens, and they have a ‘natural feel’ for the decorative pieces they put into their gardens. Whether you want gnomes or stone animals and reptiles or glass balls or all three … It’s YOUR garden, and you should buy what you like and put it where you want to … I guarantee that it will look wonderful, not just to you but to those who can see in or take a walk in your garden.

Ken asks…

Where In Bermuda Is The Botanical Gardens?

Where in Bermuda is the Bontanical Gardens????

Thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

The Botanical Gardens in Bermuda are located about a mile from Hamilton, accessable by taxi, scooter, or by the Number 1, 2 or 7 bus. The closest bus stop is at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital stop.

The Botanical Gardens are open 365 days a year, and are 362 of those days are free (the only exception is in April during the Agricultural Exhibition). The 36-acre gardens have a mix of collections, all quite beautiful. Were acquired from the Tucker family.

A new exhibit is the cactus house, which came on board in 2003.

The Gardens are open sunrise to sunset.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I started gardening to create shade on my home. I get blazing hot sun across the back of my house when the temps get into the triple digits and gardening has helped cut my AC bill.

Then I started gardening for privacy. I plant where I need to block my neighbor’s view.

Now it is noise control so I don’t hear my neighbor’s dogs barking incessantly all night and day. And, because friends and neighbors give me cuttings which I propagate in my memory garden. When my husband’s mother passed away, I inherited her roses, her orchids, her succulents and her cactus collection which I planted in a memory garden in her honor. So, that would be gardening in remembrance.

Richard asks…

Seniors, do you grow your own vegetables? If so, what have you planted?

so far and what is now beginning to show through the soil?

I have planted very many things but, so far, I have onions and garlic showing and the first potatoes which I put in much earlier than my second lot (which are not showing yet). Some things I put in and expected to be showing by now are not so either the frost got them or I’m just being impatient. I’m quite a novice so will be making notes of what has worked for me and what hasn’t and trying to find out where I went wrong and what suits my soil and what doesn’t etc.

I’ve planted a second batch of certain things in case it was the frost that was the problem so I hope to get some tomatoes and cucumbers, cabbages and lettuces and have decided to forget the peas and beans this time round as I’m running out of garden. I only have a front garden and want some flowers in there also – nearer to the road.
Sophieb, it is not a large garden by any stretch of the imagination but I have dug up half of the lawn which was there when I moved here so I now have the borders AND the space where half the lawn was. Next year the other half of the lawn is coming up. I am just utilizing the space I have as best I can. This year is a learning curve and will determine what I grow next year. I have put in only small amounts of each veg I mention to see how they cope with the soil here (which looks as if it will be much better than my previous one which had a lot of clay in it).
Lynn, my mobility is not all that good really. I have very stiff knees and back problems (dating back to my teens) but, like many people, I have good days and bad days and I just utilise the good ones. If I don’t feel able on some days I don’t do any gardening but it’s coming along in much the way I envisaged it but next year might be quite different. Digging up half of my small lawn was a challenge and had to be done spread over many days. I’m still trying to find a way of getting rid of all the clumps of grass now which are in a large heap.

GardenersCardiff answers:

We have asparagus, cabbage carrots, broccoli, beans, radishes, potatoes, lettuce, spinach,Swiss chard, tomatoes and peppers growing now. Also my favorite….strawberries. I will be planting corn and okra soon.I may have room for sweet potatoes too.

Linda asks…

Vegans- do you grow your own fruits and vegetables?

If so, what do you grow at what times of the years and do you think it’s better to?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Tomatoes, raspberries, oranges, lemons, apple, peach, blueberry, jalapeno, bell peppers

Thinking of growing green beans and potatoes

I try to grow the stuff on the “dirty dozen” list, or things that’s better to purchase organic. It’s just plain cheaper, plus it’s usually fruit, so it’s better fresh. As for what and when to grow, it depends where you are. If you look up “master gardener” and your major city, and use some search skills, you can find some guides on what, and when, to grow seeds, when to transfer into the ground, etc. All the brain work will be done for you. I tend to buy plants, though.

This is for my area (Los Angeles County): http://celosangeles.ucdavis.edu/Common_Ground_Garden_Program/Garden_Tips_for_Los_Angeles_County/
And here’s some general tips: http://celosangeles.ucdavis.edu/Common_Ground_Garden_Program/Gardening_Articles/

There’s no sub for research. You can also go to your local garden center and ask them for advice. Go to a good one, though.
