Lisa asks…

What age do you have to be in order to purchase tobacco in Washington?

I know 18 is smoking age, but I found out, in order to buy tobacco from online, you have to be 21. So can an 18 year old go to a store and purchase some cigs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes, you can purchase smokes in a store if you are 18 or older.
Or you grow your own at any age. Order some tobacco seeds from the internet or a seed company like Gurney’s and then grow your own. If tomato’s will grow in your area, tobacco will grow in your area.

Daniel asks…

Is it illeagal to grow my own tobacco plants?

GardenersCardiff answers:

No, but it’s difficult in some areas and the green leaves can kill you by nicotine poisoning. You can buy seeds and get instructions at http://coffinails.com/

William asks…

Can a tribe grow it’s own tobacco on soverign land ?

I am a member of a small tribe in California and we want to know about the taxation and laws regarding growing tobacco. It would be “high mountain tobacco” and only from ceremonial consuption as it has a very high nicotine content.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I am pretty sure that if you are not selling it then the Gov will care less…

Lisa asks…

If everyone grew at least a few veges in their garden, would it make a difference to the environment?

I grow all of my own herbs and leafy green (spinach, lettuce, bok choi, rocket, silverbeet) – i find them easy to grow, easy to pick what I need, and that store bought greens don’t last long in the fridge.
Apart from the convenience to me – does this help the environment?
My back yard is inner city – measures 5m x 5m.

GardenersCardiff answers:

This helps the environment because, no one is driving your produce to or from a store, no gas is being used to transport them.. So no cars are giving off polution in the air or carbons.
No plastic bags, or cartons etc.. Are being used to sell them in… Which uses less oil. And makes for less trash in our land fills.
You can grow without using harmful herbicides or pesticides, which run off into the environment.
So, by growing at home you do all that! 😀
Keep on growing stuff at home. Good job!

Lizzie asks…

What veggies and herbs grows well in central Illinois?

Now that it’s warm, I’m getting excited to start planting some things in my new back yard. I know NOTHING about growing ANYTHING. I can’t keep a cactus alive. However, I’d really like to start growing my own vegetables and herbs this season. Any ideas on what I can grow, when to start, and how to keep it alive?
Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Square Foot Gardening…get the book at the library. Makes gardening simple.

While you are there, ask the librarian for any resources they may have for gardening in your area. I just left my library with a few brochures.

Ruth asks…

How much attention do growing fresh herbs need?

We live in a small unit, without a window sill but with a balcony. I’ve always avoided recipes with many herbs, but I don’t mind just buying one (expensive) bunch, and make good use of it. Growing your own herbs seem like too much work and I don’t even know how. So what exactly do I do??

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have basil, oregano, sage, thyme and rosemary growing in inside window boxes. And frankly don't pay much attention to them. They might get watered twice a week or not. Point is once you get them going, mine were started from greenhouse sprouts, the damn things grow like weeds.

Lisa asks…

Why do people say marijuana wouldn’t generate taxes because it could be home-grown?

I’ve been reading a lot of people saying that the theoretical tax revenues generated by legalizing cannabis would not exist, because everyone would simply be growing their own. Don’t those people know that tobacco is a plant that grows just as naturally as cannabis? I don’t hear of many people planting, harvesting, drying, and curing their own tobacco simply because they can.

I don’t smoke tobacco, though it seems more convenient to just go pick up a pack of state-taxed smokes than to grow your own.

GardenersCardiff answers:

That makes no sense at all. People can make a lot of things on their own, but don’t. Have you seen this thing called a restaurant? Of course people can make their own food at home, yet night after night, these places are filled! People can make their own bread, but why bother when the market has it available for such a good price?

Donald asks…

Is it legal to grow tobacco in the United States?

If you had it growing in your yard, for your own use, or for use (free) by people who would otherwise ask for cigarette money, is it legal?
Thanks to you all. I think we have a near-concensus that it can be grown with little trouble (legally), but that selling it involves more complication. I think several answers are “good” but must pick only one “best”.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes legal. In fact i had some about christmas that a local guy grew. He needs to work on the curing process, but it is legal to grow, however not to sell. You would need a tax stamp for that and that may be difficult. Farmers do grow it evey year in several states.

Thomas asks…

I am getting very concerned about the price of cigarettes, so I was just wondering?

Is it legal to grow your own cigarette tobacco, and if so where could I get the seeds or plants?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Just about any seed catalogue can offer you tobacco seeds at a cheap price. Growing the tobacco itself doesn’t help much, even if you can grow it without the blights tobacco in itself is subjective to. It’s all in the curing of it that comes part and parcel of the deal. It’s certainly legal to grow your own tobacco, which I find curious as cannabis (aka marijuana) is in itself an indigenous herb grown in the “wild” but still remains prohibitive according to the the FDA regs. I’ve grown my own tobacco and even gone so far as to try and cure it on my own via text-book directions, but it’s always ended up being non-smokeable. Unless you really like that lung-burning and raw sensation. If you’re able to connect with people “in the know”, I’d say either give it up or just pay the price.

Robert asks…

Is it hard to grow weed indoors?

Do you save money by growing it on your own rather than buying it? I’m specifically interested in hash. If anyone has any experiences with hash could you please tell me about it?:)
Oh and the title question: is it hard to grow weed indoors? And if you get caught with it can you go to jail? Sorry I’m so naive about this, I’m a beginner:)

GardenersCardiff answers:

You should look into the ‘Autoflowering’ strains.. Very very easy to grow, from seed to harvest in 60-70 days quality ganj

William asks…

how often has your own child grow out of toddler clothing?(2t-5t) and how often do you shop for them?

i am just curious about clothing sizes when kids get to certain ages and other people’s experiences.i know all kids are different weight and height.my baby is almost 6 months is a way taller percentile wise than most ones her age,so i know she will continue to grow like a weed and it wont stop no time soon.lol.i shopped every two months for clothes since she was born.

if you could share your clothing cost with us too.just to know what other mothers/fathers are doing brand,store,new/used wise with their children’s clothing.all people have a different view on what clothes their kids are in.why is your preference the way it is? it would be fun to hear,if you do not mind sharing.

thank you for your answers, all are welcome.

GardenersCardiff answers:

My son is 2.5 and he has always been in a little bigger size than his age (I think most are). He has really long arms so his shirts are 4T and 5T, his jeans are currently 4T but he has some 4T that he can still wear. I am miffed by the guidelines they make children’s clothes with. Some brands I need a huge size and others he can wear 3T. Just last night he picked out some pj’s to wear that I have not had a chance to throw out yet. They are 24 months, a shirt and pants (the tight kind) and he fit right into them.

I do a lot of consignment shopping and also get him clothes off Ebay. You can buy lots of nearly new clothing (brand name) for ridiculously low prices. We are constantly getting some with the tags still attached. Other than that I like to buy Gar-animal clothing (Wal Mart) because he can wreck them and it’s not a big deal. It’s about $3/each for a shirt and pants.

Lisa asks…

Do you grow your own plants? LOL?

Like weeds and other garden plants? Thank you.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes phil all the plants i grow are my own but they are just your average house plants lol

Lisa asks…

Have you ever grown your own vegetables and if so what kind?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes. Heirloom tomatoes, chard, chioggia beets, haricot verts, herbs, heirloom carrots, turnips…..

Sandy asks…

doesn’t walmart sell seeds to grow your own vegetables or fruit?i want to try to grow bananas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have some banana trees. I do not live in a tropical climate, I live near the Mississippi River in the upper midwest.
You grow them from trees. The trees shoot up new trees when they are about two years old. You can separate the new baby trees from the roots of the bigger trees to grow separately. They do not have seeds.

We take our banana trees outside in April where we plant them in sand and full sun. At about age five, they will drop a long rope with a beautifully sweet-smelling flower on the end of it. Small four inch bananas then form on the top of the plant that grow upward not down like you see them in the stores. After having bananas the big tree dies. By that time it is about ten feet tall or more.

Each fall in mid October, we dig up each tree, cut off all the leaves and wrap the roots in a garbage bag then haul them to the basement. They winter there where we dribble water on each rootball about three times during the winter. In spring we take them back out where they sprout new leaves and grow.

I accidentally killed some of them last year by fertilizing them. So just for reference, do not fertilize. Just let them grow. They are sturdy, hardy plants. And when you get rewarded with a flowering tree you feel wonderful. Their scent is beautiful.

Robert asks…

How many people have grown their own vegetables?

To grow your vegetables organically does not take a lot of space. Have been growing our own for many years and it great to know where your food is coming from and under what conditions it is grown. With climate change it might be a very useful hobby! With a quarter acre and a freezer its possible to grow all your needs for a small family.

GardenersCardiff answers:

In my country Hungary most people who have a garden grow some vegetables and have fruit trees. We have them too. It’s a very useful hobby but for people who have low income it’s a way of survival.
We don’t use chemicals but my greatgrandma used a lot and it sometimes made everybody run to the toilet like crazy.lol
Our vegetables and fruit are good tasting but we’ve gotta watch what to plant and when we trim the trees. One apricot tree has died cause I trimmed it when the weather was getting warm and I didn’t put tree-cream on the wounds only a day later and it died of Monilia, so gotta be careful with the timing and do the work properly when doing biogarden.

Lisa asks…

Why is it illegal to grow your own tobacco?

I know its illegal in Australia, I am not sure about other country’s, but why is it illegal, when you can legally buy it from shops.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Because its taxable, and if you grow your own you wont pay tax.

Charles asks…

Mary asks…

Is it legal to grow your own tobacco in Florida?

If so, where can plants or seeds be purchased?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Sure, you can grow your own tobacco anywhere you want to.

You just have to follow federal law if you intend to sell it.

You can get seeds at the farmer’s co-op.
