John asks…

Request for comments (Soilless medium)?

Hi Everyone,

First time gardener from Ohio need your help. TIA.

I am planning for vegetable plants in a (container) wooden boxes of size 4 foot x 4 foot x 8 inches (=~ 11 cubic foot). Four of these boxes makes 45 cubic foot approximately.

I filled these four boxes with the soil less medium as following:
Coarse Vermiculite – 15 cubic foot
Sphagnum Peat Moss – 15 cubic foot
`Compost kind of` – 15 cubic foot (1 cubic foot each of below)

I have searched 50+ of garden centers locally (zip code: 45040) and
couldn’t find so called “COMPOST”. For next year I will be preparing
my own compost so this question won’t arise. But, to begin my first/
fresh vegetable garden; in the place of compost I used the following
mix. I mixed them *VERY* thorough spending a week.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Question: is the following mix ‘OK’ to begin my garden? Am I sort of
something here? Am I going to kill the plants with Over dosage? Any
other suggestions/ideas to help myself is greatly appreciated.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My `Compost kind of` – 15 cubic foot is:

1.Mother Nature’s – SWEET PEET – Composted soil conditioner – 1 cubic foot

Sounds okay. Not sure about items 2 and 3 but they don’t sound like anything that would hurt. For not finding “compost” you have a lot of compost in there. I think your garden should grow great.

Richard asks…

What if life is literally one big drug trip?

For starters, this is simply a theory in a sea of theories that I have about what life could possibly be, so please, don’t take it too seriously.

But, what if life is a giant drug trip that we don’t even remember? People who take drugs like LSD often enter trips knowingly, but as soon as the trip takes a turn for the worst, they immediately forget and interpret everything as “real”.

Imagine this before you were “born”

Your friend: Dude, I wouldn’t try life if I were you, I heard it’s some pretty heavy stuff and you have to be mentally prepared for the trip.

You: I think I’m ready for life, man. I’ve always wanted to try it. Are you going to do it or am I going to have to do this alone?

Your friend: Haha.. go for it, man.. I’m good. I heard some pretty crazy stories about people on life, I don’t think I could handle it.

You: Alright, well I’m doing some life, fuck it

Like all most drug trips, they begin nicely. Like mushroom trips or LSD, but very soon, they take a turn for the worst, you begin to suffer through the bad trip.

Isn’t that kind of what life is like? At first (childhood) life is USUALLY an amazing time period, but at you slowly but surely age (or progress through the trip), life USUALLY becomes miserable. You either realize or experience suffering or both, amongst the many negative aspects that almost everyone is inveitably forced to face in life (ie. violence, war, racism, sexism, hate, cheating, sins, prejudice, physical pain of aging etc.) What if growing up is part of the drug of life – a trip going very bad.

Of course like drugs like LSD and shrooms some people have an entire trip without having a bad trip and are lucky (such as rich people, famous people, people who find meaning in life or love etc.)

What if people who commit suicide in life in fact commit suicide in their “real” life outside of the drug trip – just like people do when they can no longer distinguish a drug trip from reality? Because they could no longer handle “life” so they killed themselves. Other people ride the trip (life) all the way to the end.

Most people (not all) learn various amounts of important things in life by the time they die. Just like people go through drug trips (good or bad) become “reborn” or “enlightened” or with new perspectives etc.

What if that’s the meaning of life?

I don’t know, it’s an interesting theory that I thought up. Have any of you had thoughts similar to the meaning of life?

For the record, I don’t do any drugs, I just enjoy thinking.. sometimes perhaps too much for my own good.
What if life was “perfect” outside of the life that we currently know? (outside of the trip) – There was no logical reasoning behind wanting to do the drug life, but we did it anyway.

Sort of like Eve giving in to temptation and eating the forbidden fruit. What if life is symbolic of the story of Adam and Eve and vise versa?

Laura asks…

George asks…

What are some quotes about trees/gardens/plants that profoundly relate to volunteering?

For example,

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit” ~Nelson Henderson.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The quote you gave [“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit”] is one of my favorites.

Other quotes I’ve used in connection with volunteerism (some of which *directly* relate to nature, and some of which only *indirectly* do) are as follow:

The breeze, the trees, the honey bees –
All volunteers!
~Juliet Carinreap

the strength of fire,
and the life that never goes away,
they speak to me.
And my heart soars.

Sandy asks…

what are some quotes from Garden State?

i mean profound ones, but if you want to put funny ones in thats fine.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Andrew: You’ll see when you move out it just sort of happens one day one day and it’s just gone. And you can never get it back. It’s like you get homesick for a place that doesn’t exist. I mean it’s like this rite of passage, you know. You won’t have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start, it’s like a cycle or something. I miss the idea of it. Maybe that’s all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place.
————————————————————————-
Sam: This is your one opportunity to do something that no one has ever done before and that no one will copy throughout human existence. And if nothing else, you will be remembered as the one guy who ever did this. This one thing.

William asks…

Where can I get quotes for a water garden online?

I’ve found several designs online I’m interested in but I never can seem to find a cost to go along with them.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I’lll give you a price. I put in 2. A 2×5′, and a 4×8′. All the plants, stone, pumps, fish and landscaping cost me $325.00. It took me about 12 hours, over 3 days. I live in NW Ohio.
