moss topiary frame~have – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-526/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-526/#respond Fri, 09 Aug 2013 12:05:04 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-526/

Betty asks…

Why would God put a tree with fruit that was forbidden in the garden of Eden?

I thought god wanted us to love him, why would he put the fruit there in the first place? Is god malevolent?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Malevolent means to be spiteful, and God is anything but!

God does want us to love Him, willingly. He gave us free will to make choices. As mankind’s creator, Jehovah God put the tree of knowledge in the garden. There were many other trees of the same type, he only asked that Adam and Eve not eat from that one tree. It was symbolic of his right to rule, and to choose what right and wrong. Since he made us, he is the one to know best what benefits us

What God was asking of them caused them no hardship, and more importantly did not rob them of their dignity. He merely asked them to display respect for Him out of love. When the first couple sinned, they were in effect following a headstrong course in opposition to God.

Example : A loving parent is preparing for a family meal and has made several plates of the same type of cookie. This parent now tells the children that they can eat from any of the plates except the one in the middle, since they are for the guests. This parent isn’t being cruel, and as a gesture out love, this parent even put the acceptable plates on the outside edges so they would be easier for the children to reach and make the middle plate less tempting. [The same way with God. Adam and Eve could have eat from the many trees surrounding the Tree of knowledge. They were all of the same type of fruit. They just allowed their curiousity and desires to overtake them.]

MOSS topiary frame~have YOU actually made one & how is the maintaining?

of these plant sculptures?
did you make the frame urself as well?
Or purchase it?
they look great and exciting for the garden 😉

GardenersCardiff answers:

Moss dries out very fast , & can’t take full sun well. Better to use small sedums & Hens and Chicks , unless it’s deep shade.. They’re drought-tolerant & much easier care .

Paul asks…

What is a good place in San Francisco to go to dine and dance after a private wedding?

My mom is 44 yrs old and is having a small private wedding in San Francisco. She wants to go eat and dance afterwards. Any suggestions as to where to go?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My husband and I got married in SF, same thing, small wedding and we went to a really elegant dinner at Acquarello which was delicious Italian food in an old church (perfect for wedding attire as it’s formal dress code). Http://www.acquerello.com/

Then we went dancing and had drinks at Top of the Mark, which someone already mentioned. Http://www.topofthemark.com/entertainment.html
That is a great, traditional “dancing” place for mature people. I don’t mean mature like gray hair and walkers, but not a night club. It’s classy jazz music you can dance to. We rented a limo to take us from place to place since there weren’t that many of us, and that made it really easy to get from one point to the other without having to worry about parking. It also gave us the ability to zip all over town to have our wedding pictures taken in front of the “Painted Ladies”, China beach, Japanese Tea Garden, Shakespeare Garden, etc.

I personally wouldn’t recommend going to Jazz at Pearls for seveal reasons. The first being that it’s an actual concert venue, which means no talking. I think that on the night of a wedding, it kind of brings the celebration to an abrupt halt to go sit and watch a jazz show. It’s better to go somewhere that has live jazz to have drinks where you can still socialize and celebrate. Secondly, something dreadful is going on at Pearl’s. I’m not sure if they are under new management or just going through some kind of issue but the last few times we were there, they were totally disorgnized and the staff was rude, so something has changed. It’s still a neat place to go see a good traditional jazz show, but not on your wedding night. The staff at the Top of the Mark is top notch, very classy place.

William asks…

Growing vegetables for first time?

I bought some carrot seeds, cucumber seeds, watermelon seeds, tomato seeds, lettuce seeds, and strawberry seeds. I have never tried to grow my own vegetables before. I live in Pennsylvania, and right now it’s cold and there’s snow on the ground. Could I grow the vegetables/fruits indoors? I bought a biodegradable potting thing that has 32 little pots in it. I also bought organic potting soil, specifically made for vegetables.

Any advice on how to get started would be great. Thanks!!
I do not have a greenhouse lol. I live in a townhome complex. I have a small front yard, but my backyard is surrounded by trees, and in the summer hardly gets any sun because it’s very shaded.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Start them indoors 1-2 weeks before the weather will clear up. If you transplant them into larger pots they might go as long as 3-4 weeks before they’re too big for the pot. Don’t forget to mix fertilizer with the potting soil. A tray underneath the pots can make it easier to water, since you can pour water into the tray and let them soak it up. The soil should be kept lightly damp not wet, except during watering time. Roots need air. Transition them very slowly to the outdoors, increasing the time the pots spend outside a little each day or they’ll get sun burnt.

I would plant the cucumbers, watermelons and tomatoes. If you plant any more after the weather clears up, the cucumbers and watermelons will do better if planted directly outside while the tomatoes can continue to get special treatment. Though even with the tomatoes you may want to leave the pots outdoors from the beginning if the weather is good. That way you won’t have to transition them.

Get tomato cages for the tomatoes. Fertilize outdoors too, remembering that summer plants like a lot of fertilizer. Weed and till before you plant. Like the pots water regularly but don’t overwater. Dig 1/4″ underneath the soil with your finger and water only when that is dry.

I’d return the carrots, lettuce and strawberry seeds since this is your first time. They will be harder to grow and yields won’t be as great. I’ve been gardening for a while and I still don’t bother with them unless I have extra space. I do love garden carrots, but I love the easier plants too.

All the summer plants need full sun, so I’d risk growing them in your front yard. If you can’t do that I don’t know what to say. You could grow lettuce in your backyard, but it hardly seems worth the trouble. Maybe you could start a backyard herb garden. You can’t grow much indoors without ludicrous lighting bills.

I bought all of mine. They’re very easy to maintain…just keep them wet.

Steven asks…

What’s a good hobby/thing to do in my spare time that’s fun and cool?

I’m 14 and 6’4″ and I need something to do. But not like gardening or cooking or reading or cards or chess or magic or sports or exercise

GardenersCardiff answers:

Prepping! Gathering gear and supplies for survival in the case of the collapse of society. Or if that doesn’t appeal to you, leather craft is fun too. I’ve made two sheaths so far and its pretty fun and easy.
