Betty asks…

What are the requirments for a garden wedding?

I am torned between planning a church wedding or a garden wedding.

GardenersCardiff answers:

A church wedding means you don’t have to worry about the weather and you don’t need a back-up plan. If you’re a worry wart, a church wedding might be a better choice.

That said, a garden wedding can be beautiful – as long as you have a back-up plan. A tent is a good idea, but won’t protect you if there are high winds and torrential rains.

When you are looking for an outdoor venue for your garden wedding ceremony, find out if tents are permitted, or if there is a building nearby that can accommodate your wedding.

Many conservation areas now offer garden weddings, as well as public parks, historical settings, botanical gardens and private estates. Your home, or the home of a friend or relative can also serve as the perfect venue for your garden wedding.

Many garden venues will only permit ceremonies, and some do not supply chairs for guests. If you are looking for a simple garden ceremony this won’t be a problem.

Here are some things to consider when looking for a venue for your garden wedding ceremony:

Visit the venue beforehand. Is it big enough? Maybe it’s too big for your intimate wedding? Are there washroom facilities? What about parking? Ideally, visit the site at the same time of day you plan to have your ceremony. That way, you can figure out how to configure your site so that you and your guests are not blasted by the sun.

Find out if any other events are being held at the location on your wedding date. You don’t want the Addams Family Reunion a stones throw away from your ceremony site.

Find out if chairs are provided. If not, find out if chair rental is permitted. If they are, choose wooden chairs. Metal chairs get scorching hot in the sun.

If you are planning to get married in the summer, find out if there is shade where the ceremony is being held. You might be able to stand up to the 90 degree heat, but what about your grandmother? Also, provide bottled water for your guests to keep them hydrated. You could also offer lemonade or sparkling water before the reception. Parasols for elderly guests are also a nice idea. Or you could make your programs in the shape of fans so guests can fan themselves.

If the venue is in a secluded area, make sure you give your guests good directions and allow for extra travel time for guests to find the venue. If your guests have to take back country roads to find the site, they might need some extra time to get there.

Keep decorations simple. Gardens need little adornment.

When choosing a wedding gown, make sure you keep in mind that you will be having a ceremony outdoors. A gown that will bustle or has no train is your best bet.

Don’t choose flowers that can’t stand the heat. If you are working with a florist, s/he should be able to guide you in the right direction. Also, keep several buckets of water onsite in a shady spot to store wedding bouquets so that they spend less time in the sun.

Go with the flow. Garden weddings are less predictable than weddings indoors. Be prepared for inclement weather. Even if the weather is perfect, unexpected things like bird droppings, sirens and bee stings are always possibilities.

Michael asks…

Can we objectively look at how bad Obama hates America?

Example 1: Trade Bill Signings, Cancels public signing, does it in private

Why? Image of Republicans and Democrats working together for America’s best interest kills Obama’s divisive hate filled spite filled message concerning Republicans

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/10/why-did-the-white-house-cancel-the-rose-garden-bill-signing-ceremony-for-the-free-trade-agreements/
goes against his cynical Republicans “Do Nothing” message, and simply say “No” message

too busy campaigning than to show America…

Hey! We are working together! Which America has demanded of Congress and the White House, so yes, not doing so means he hates America.

He promotes diviseness
Its all about campaigning against the evil Republicans rather than show markets and credit agencies they are working together to improve the tone and working environment in Washington.

In the coming several weeks the poop hits fan and in Obama’s face: debt deals, budgets, tax debates
trade deals always hurt American workers. Obama took the union money, but he shipped the jobs with these bills.
Alex: You are wrong. It is important as a LEADER to show the country in deep need of seeing work, accomplishment, and cooperation by Democrats and Republicans.

He chooses hate rather than a positive message for America. You know it. And you know why he does. Because he is a hate filled political hack who won’t hesitate to miss an opportunity to show America that they are working together on many fronts, Trade being one of them, and this would be a positive message, but it undermines his “poltitikal message” which is all the narcissist cares about

GardenersCardiff answers:

He’s ashamed to be seen sending American Jobs Overseas.

Nancy asks…

Isn’t this just one more PREVENTABLE death??

Mother seeks $100 million in son’s death

By Phil Ray, pray@altoonamirror.com

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The mother of a man killed in a triple homicide last year plans to sue the federal government for $100 million, court documents state.

Sandra Miller of Altoona is the mother of Stephen Heiss, who died Aug. 28, 2005.

Miguel Padilla was convicted and received death sentences this month for killing Alfred Mignogna, owner of the United Veterans Association building; Fredrick Rickabaugh Sr., UVA doorman; and Heiss, a patron.

The jury wasn’t told that Padilla is an illegal alien.

The civil lawsuit notice, filed by attorney Art Cohen of Hollidaysburg, blames the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for allowing Padilla to remain in the United States.

Padilla, 27, came to America as a young boy with his mother and brothers to escape an alcoholic father.

He graduated from Penn Cambria High School but never became a U.S. citizen.

He was involved in a stabbing incident in which the victim was his then-father-in-law.

ICE never took Padilla into custody or attempted to deport him.

U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-9th District, spoke of the case on the House floor, saying ICE did nothing about Padilla.

Most of the money sought is for punitive damages because the government did not take any action that could have prevented the homicides.

An attorney with ICE declined comment Wednesday. ICE has asked Cohen to provide it with more details concerning the Padilla case.

GardenersCardiff answers:

This is great news….I asked a question awhile back if people thought victims of an illegal should be able to sue the Gov. The majority said yes. I wish more would start suing!! I hope she wins and I want to stay on top of this to see how it works out.
OH and to answer the Q, yes it is a preventable death. Our gov. And greedy business owners have American blood on their hands, not as much as the actual perpetrator, but they do have some.
Another Great post seals!! Thanx for this one!!

~add on~ If a moron can sue McDonalds (for her own idiocy) AND actually friggin wins, then I am sure this mother has a case.

James asks…

What can I add to my story?

We are supposed to write a story based on the picture. In my story the girl finds fictional rare “jelly worms” that are very valuable. Aparently she has alot of jelly worms in her garden. She decides she wants to sell them at a bait shop.
I don’t know what else to put. Any ideas? I just want the girl to find out at the end that the worms are endangered species and decides to let them go like in the picture/caption. Well I have no idea about what to do when you find a rare species that is endangered. What should I put in the story so it makes sense for the characted to realize they are endangered? How can I make my story make sense?

GardenersCardiff answers:

That’s a neat idea. You have proposed something that can potentially cause the central conflict of your story (the worms are endangered), but you don’t quite have that conflict outlined yet.

My suggestion:
-Girl starts selling worms to local bait shop
-They become quite popular. Fishermen come from neighbouring towns to buy them, and she just keeps pulling them from her garden to sell.
-The shop owner loves getting all the extra business, the fishermen love the bait, and the girl loves having so much extra money to help her family
-Then she discovers that the worms are endangered. Maybe she reads it in a book, or learns it from a teacher, or something. I think involving law enforcement would make your story too complicated, so just keep it simple. It’s a small town, nobody ever bothered to call the government about it.
-The girl feels terrible about it, and knows she must stop selling the worms. But unfortunately: her family has come to rely a bit on the money she was making, and the bait shop owner pressures them to continue harvesting the worms by offering them a better price, or to buy them a new truck, or some other monetary reward that the family needs.
-So it’s pretty much a greed vs. Environmentalism story.
-In the end…I’m not sure how it ends, but the girl finds a way to solve her family’s financial woes so that she doesn’t have to sell the worms anymore.

Added:
Actually, it’s not really a greed vs. Environmentalism story. The family isn’t being greedy, they need the money. So it’s more so just an ethical dilemma; are unethical actions justified when necessary to meet one’s needs? Sort of like the classic example of the penniless thief stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family.

David asks…

How can I write a complaint letter to Better Homes and Gardens magazine?? I can’t find their address anywhere!?

not the one in Australia either, just the regular Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Go to pipl.com and search it and it should give you the address

Lisa asks…

do you know any good Garden magazines?

Also any Garden advise would be good

GardenersCardiff answers:

Organic Gardening is my personal favorite. The Herb Companion is another good one. The Farmers Almanac, Horticulture Magazine and Mother Earth News are also good sources if information. My local library subscribes to all of these so check out yours and see what they have. Best advice- Use lots of clean compost and rotate veggie crops yearly. Good luck

Helen asks…

I’m making a scrapbook with magazines/pictures of me & my friends/family. What are good magazines to use?

I want to buy some magazines to cut up and use the letters to spell stuff, and I want lots of cool/ interesting pictures. I’m 17 years old by the way, so Better Homes & Gardens, isn’t what I’m looking for.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Good Housekeeping? Just kidding! LOL

Why not go to a place that sells magazines, and look through a few to see what you want. You’ll see what is available that way, and can better make a choice. I don’t know what your definition of “cool/interesting” is for this, and I’m far from 17, so I don’t know what is even out there for your age group.

Sounds like a really fun project though! Scrapbooking is a very big thing now, so you will find some neat papers and other things in the hobby section at stores, too! Have fun doing this!
