this is for educational purposes only :)))
is there a possible way to grow shrooms without a kit?
if there is can someone tell me or give me a good reference site?
P.S. psilocybin mushrooms to be exact

GardenersCardiff answers:

The secret is keeping a pure culture going. This is easy to do with a pressure cooker and the proper technique. Mushrooms grow from a mass of filaments called a mycelium. It looks a bit like bread mold, but is more compact and there are no dusty spores of any kind. A small piece of this tissue is carefully placed in a sterile growth medium of some sort. Potato agar is frequently used in large labs, but ordinary gelatine can be mixed with molassis and a little plant food. Boiled and cooled, it sets into an appropriate growth medium. If things work as they should, the fungus will eventually cover the medium with a blanket of mycelium. Sometimes however, too many bacteria also enter the culture and out-compete the mushroom. This is easy to see because the medium liquifies, darkens and rots. A good culture will remain solid with only a white covering of mycelium. Stock is best kept in the refrigerator when not in use. Most mushroom stocks can even be frozen.

Having established a stock culture, it can be used to innoculate growth cultures. Many edible mushrooms grow on some cellulose base. Shitake are fond of hardwood sawdust, especially oaks. Oyster mushrooms are more tolerant of compost and can be grown on straw. The important thing is to insure the compost is sterile before placing any stock on it. After being i9nnoculated, the compost is re-sealed and incubated a month or so. Properly innoculated, the compost will fill with a thick mat of mycellium. At this point, the compost container is opened and exposed to fresh air and light. This will trigger the mature mycellium to produce fruiting bodies. These expand into full sized mushrooms fairly quickly. The mushrooms can be harvested and a well grown compost can produce several crops of mushrooms before exhausting itself. The material can then be added to garden soil as mulsh to enrich it. Some soil mushrooms can colonize the garden by doing this, like shaggy mane mushrooms and even morels.

Another popular way of growing wood mushrooms is to drill holes in logs and stuff stock mycellium into them. This will eventually grow into the log after the holes are capped with a wax plug. After 6 months to a year, the log will begin to sprout many mushrooms.

The white button mushrooms most common in stores are grown on sterilized manure and wheat straw. A bed of sterile compost is laid down in a barn and stock is applied to it. The bed is covered, kept moist and a flush of mushrooms is harvested.

Truffels are the rarest and most expensive fungus in the world. They are impossible to grow in a lab and have to grow naturally in oak forests. The mushroom lives on the roots of oak trees and dogs or pigs have to be used to find them undergound.

FYI: The Fungi Perfecti company sells mushroom kits, books and most everything else one needs to grow their own mushrooms at home.

Susan asks…

How to make mushrooms stop growing and spreading on lawn?

I just noticed a couple days ago that I have a few patches of mushrooms in my yard. How do I get rid of them and prevent them from spreading?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You can’t without killing the lawn too. When it runs out of cellulose, it will just die out on it’s own. Until then, just mow them off as they come up.

The actual mushroom is growing underground. It is a white fibrous organism that eats cellulose in your lawn. Stuff like dead grass and dead tree roots or shrub roots. As long as cellulose is present, and moisture conditions are just right, it will grow and send up Caps (which are actually the flower of the mushroom). When moisture is taken away, or it eats up all the cellulose, it dies.

Richard asks…

how do I get rid of mushrooms that grow around the base of the tree of my yard. There are so any of them. Ugh

They look like mushrooms. They cluster together in large numbers. They look gross to me. These things keep coming back. I would like to get rid of them permanently.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I would wonder if your tree is dying? If it’s on the roots and in the bark you might end up killing the tree rooting it out as suggested by that one person, sounds like it’s being kept too wet around the base, perhaps you have mulch or dirt mound up around the trunk? You might want to get rid of that. I doubt the salt would work and that would definitely harm the tree and surrounding plants and soil. If you had all my snails they’d probably gobble it up lol. Whatever you do don’t tear off the bark that will kill the tree for sure, its lifeline of “arteries” is right underneath. Fungacide might be harmful to the tree as well although maybe they sell something you can spray on the surrounding soil, I’d ask an OSH or other garden store expert. From my own experience mushrooms growing on the ground are either growing on dying or dead tree roots or grass or if they’re on the trunk, they’re doing damage to the tree

Ruth asks…

How do you grow shrooms at home?

I went to sacredspores.com and they carry lots of great sterile shroom spores, but I want to know what the best method is to grow my own shrooms. The site has lots of great prices, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. When I grow mushrooms I am only shopping at sacredspores.com

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are many different ways of doing it, it can be quite complex as everything will need to be sterile, and you will need to make Brown Rice Flower cakes for which to grow the mycelium to the point where the whole jar is white with fungus. At this point you remove the cake from the jar and place it into your fruiting chamber and wait a few weeks for them to grow. You should download the torrent Psilocybin and watch the videos included.

John asks…

Is it possible to cultivate one’s own Chanterelles / Pfifferlinge mushrooms?

I love these mushrooms, but they are so expensive in the USA. Is it possible to grow my own, and if so, can someone provide detailed instructions and links to starter supplies?

GardenersCardiff answers:

No sorry so far this species has resisted laboratory culture and is only found in the wild.

James asks…

How do you properly clean mushrooms considering they are covered in dirt and manure?

Okay, so I know that mushrooms grow in manure and they usually have a nice amount of debris on them when you buy them in the package. I’ve been told that you are not supposed to get them wet or they will soak up the water like a sponge and get ruined.

So, how the heck are you supposed to clean them to get the manure off? If I’m not mistaken, manure causes ecoli (similar to the recent spinach outbreak).

GardenersCardiff answers:

Rinse them off.

Most mushrooms are grown in compost, which may or may not have manure in it. But cow manure has to be pasteurized (as in previous post) or well-rotted (which will kill off harmful bacteria) before you use it.

And don’t eat them cow-flop mushrooms. Yuck.

So rinse them off. Don’t soak them…just rinse them.

Dry them off…moisture gone.

If you pick your own (if you’re good at recognizing edible ones, that is…get a book or an expert!) you can just throw them in the pan.

But leave the wild ones to those who know which to eat.

Donald asks…

Can i grow psilocybin mushrooms in cow poop?

Mushrooms are always hard to find where i live so i was thinking i might grow my own. I live near a cow ranch and wanted to know if i could grow them in the cow’s excrement.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It is a difficult process – and it is illegal.

There are books and websites on growing mushrooms. It is possible, but difficult to get them started.

Ruth asks…

How do resteraunts & grocery stores grow mushrooms for eating?

How do they grow their mushrooms and how do they know that they are safe to eat? Please list sources.
I KNOW they get them from MUSHROOM DEALERS, but how do the MUSHROOM DEALERS get their mushrooms!?!?1?!?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Presuming you are asking how mushrooms are grown commerically for supply to either restaurants or supermarkets, because as the others have pointed out, restaurants don’t usually grow their own produce and supermarkets definitely don’t.

I have been to a commercial mushroom farm. They are grown indoors in darkened barns in trays which are stacked in racks right to the ceiling, all at different stages of growth. The growing medium of the particular place I went to was a combination of straw and horse dung (yes that’s right). The mushroom spore is placed into the growing medium and left under strictly controlled lighting, temperature and moisture conditions. Once the tray reaches the right size, they are packaged and sent to market where they are purchased by restaurant chefs, small supermarkets, etc or they are sent under contract direct to the larger supermarket chains.

Lizzie asks…

What are some gourmet or exotic mushrooms I could grow at home?

Just got back from mushroom hunting in the smoky mountains and am thinking about growing my own at home.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Mushrooms, regardless of what kind, is considered exotic to me. 🙂

Basically, you can grow any mushroom you like to grow. Provided that you give them the nutrients for them to feast on.

For starters, try the “easiest” one : Oyster Mushrooms.
Just google it and you’ll find a lot of ways to grow it.

Are there any classes in Georgia that show you how to grow edible mushrooms?

I live in Georgia and I am very interested in growing my own edible mushrooms. I love cooking with them but I am limited in the varieties I can purchase at my grocery store. I would love to be able to produce my own. After reading about them I have found that it isn’t an easy process so I would love to have someone show me in person step by step. Sharon asks…

How difficult is it to grow mushrooms?

I used mushrooms frequently when I cook (so I tend to run out quickly) and was wondering how difficult it would be to start growing my own. Can someone recommend me a website or a book? It would be much appreciated.
sorry, meant *use

GardenersCardiff answers:

The easiest to get started with as a rookie are Plurotus ostriotis aka Oyster mushrooms. You buy wooden dowels inoculated with spawn. All you need are tree stumps or logs 4 feet long and 6-8″ in diameter. You drill holes in you stumps or logs, insert the dowels and seal them with wax. If you start now, you’ll have large portabella size mushrooms this fall. After that they bloom spring and fall for about 3-5 years, the stumps and logs fall apart. Cheaper than a stump grinder. They can also be grown in plastic bags of straw. The mushrooms like Ports and buttons are the most difficult to grow for beginners and require a lot of money for equipment. Google Fungi Perfecti or the Mushroom People for dowels. RScott

Daniel asks…

How to grow edible mushrooms?

How do you grow the mushrooms you have on pizza or with stir-fry’s and other foods?

Where can you buy the seeds?

GardenersCardiff answers:

The mushrooms you are describing are called White Button Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) They are fairly easy to cultivate. The easiest way to start your foray into growing your own mushrooms is to purchase a kit. There are many kits available and you can order them online and have them shipped to you. After you have successfully grown mushrooms from a kit you can start experimenting and start growing mushrooms from your own spore prints.

William asks…

What do you think my poem is all about?

(I just want to see if there is someone who can figure out my excat message within it)

A human is a dreamer,
a human is a murderer,
a human is a forgiver,
a human is an inventor.

For we dream of things never seen,
we kill with what we dont belief,
we forgive the worlds autrocities,
and we invent time machines.

Maybe dreams come true,
I cant bring those back from the dead to see it,
they fought for a future,
and now we begin to reverse the natural ways.

If I could Id take the mushroom clouds to the baron deserts,
and burn and fade away with them to dust,
to show the world that one single human,
can make our ways unrust.

Dieing for sins so that we can live again,
Live again only to sin again,
why would I want to bring back the ones who dreamed to only see it all wash away.

And yet some humans believe in Gods of their own,
taught to believe from the moment they are born,
and others who simply believe in love,
are told they’l never reach a heaven above,
for loving what others view as wrong,
that makes them out to be possessed and unstrong,
by demons and ghosts and sickly rains,
washed by words within their brains,

Skin colors frowned upon,
even though a white fox or red fox is still a fox,
people brand beliefs to be the cures,
when my heart tells me that belief is cruel and infectious.

And yet some of us dream of the day,
when the world will just grow up,
and be one with the blackman, the believer and the gay,
a world united one of love.

My heart will never beat to see the day,
for I am no immortal,
I respect anothers beliefs but dont want it forced or swayed,
upon me like a gaunlet.

Noone will ever bring me back from the ground,to where I will one day belong,
I chose not to go to heaven or hell, because it is my choice, not yours or your Gods.

I am who I am,I’l fall in love with whoever I want,
I am who I am,Il dream of whatever I want
I am who I am,Il believe in whoever I want

I am what I am,a simple human.

What causes mushrooms to grow?

What exactly causes psilocybin cubensis to grow in the wild? Like if you have cows on your property about how long untill they start popping up and what causes this? I am in the southern hemisphere down here in Texas and I have found a bunch of them on each property that I own that has cows, Ive just always wonderd how they got there. Please detailed answers.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have never seen psilocybin cubensis grow but like most mushrooms they prefer a dark rich soil and heat from the sun but in the absence of sun cow manure will speed up their growth. I am going on the fact of ordinary field mushrooms which I have seen growing where cows have been dropping and they also appear like magic growing out of the ground at night with a moon shining.

Sandy asks…

How do I grow my own mushrooms?

I have always wanted to grow my own mushrooms from home instead of purchasing them from a store. I don’t trust the quality and have no idea how they were grown or what kind of pesticides / toxins and fertilizers were used.

If its not difficult I want to know how to grow my own shittake, oyster, reishi, morels, and other edible mushrooms from home.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Mushrooms are grown inside, in the dark. Not much in the way of pesticides are ever used, because not much wants to eat them, or can even get at them, when they’re grown in such controlled conditions.

But it’s fun growing them yourself anyway. Google “mushroom growing kits”, and you’ll find a bunch of ready-to-grow, spore-innoculated logs and other kits to do yourself. Under the kitchen sink works well. And you can find all those varieties, too, not just basic button mushrooms.

Sandy asks…

Does anyone know where online or in-store I can find button mushroom spores (not the illegal mushrooms)?

I’ve searched all over the internet and all I can find for Button mushroom spores is results from Google and Bing that say “Button mushroom spores” and then when I click on the link, all the website has is spores for the hallucinogenic magic mushrooms. I don’t want to grow that stuff.

Last year and the year before I grew Pink Oyster mushrooms, Blue Oyster mushrooms, and Shiitake mushrooms from mushroom kits. But I don’t want to use a kit because then I can’t grow as much as I want. I’m not trying to start my own business. I don’t want to grow as many Button mushrooms as possible so I can sell them off. I don’t even want to give them away as freebies. I just love the taste and I’ve had success in the past with the kits and I’d like to try Button mushrooms.

A friend suggested to me why I don’t just buy Button mushrooms at the produce section at the grocery store and try to collect spores from the gills underneath the caps that way. I’ve already read about that. It apparently doesn’t work because many of the spores are collected through the air ducts in the warehouses where companies grow mushrooms and also the fact that who knows how old the mushrooms themselves are, plus the fact that they’ve been refrigerated can kill off the spores.

I’ve heard the best way to inoculate your medium (in my case, my friend’s mother in southern Illinois has a sheep farm and collects the dung and sells it as fertilizer for plants, and I bought some of that in bags) is to use a plastic syringe that has a mixture of some kind of liquid (probably distilled water) and the spores themselves and to put the needle into the middle of your medium and inoculate that way. I’ve seen the syringes they sell online for the magic mushrooms, but I don’t know if they do it the same way for gourmet mushrooms.

I’ve already checked Ebay. No one sells spores of any mushroom kind there. Probably because they don’t want people growing their own mushrooms and competing with their business of selling dried mushrooms on Ebay.

Thanks for any info. I really appreciate it =)

Here is a long list
http://www.shroomery.org/8689/Mycology

I grew a whole bunch of oysters a few years ago. Straw works great. The basic instructions are that you pasteurize the straw by dipping it in very hot water to kill the mold spores and then innoculate it with your grain spawn. I used about half a gallon to each basket. I got the baskets at the 99 cent store by the way.
I grew a culture by scrapping off some store bought mushroom onto a potato dextrose agar pitri dish..

Jenny asks…

what mushrooms are eatable?

I am wondering how you know if a mushroom is eatable. I know mushrooms that usually grow in your yard are said to be poisonous but how do you know for sure. Can you grow your own mushrooms? If you find one is there a test to know if it’s eatable?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Shitaki’s can be grown at home. You’ll need a kit to do it. It will come with an oak log and spore plugs.

There are many kinds of edible mushrooms you can find growing wild. Take a mycology (the study of mushrooms) course at your local community college (if they offer one) or purchase a field guide.

The best field guide out there is David Aurora’s “Mushrooms Dymystified”. What you do is follow the identification charts in the book and perform a spore print. With a little practice, its pretty easy. However, I don’t suggest consuming them unless you’ve gotten pretty good at identifying them. A lot of mushrooms are deadly.

Sandy asks…

Researching how to grow my own mushrooms at home. Noob Questions!?

I’m watching instructional videos on how to grow mushrooms at home and it looks like it might be something I can do…

I’m watching part 2.1 of “Lets Grow Mushrooms” called “Cloning Mushroom Tissue and it says to clone a mushroom, you can use a tissue clone method that allows the spread of the mycelium on to agar then you can transfer the mycelium to a grain or rice flour base. After only about 24 hours, you will see the mycelium begin to grow out in to the agar…

Knowing that almost every tissue from the mushroom can produce viable mycelium, would it be possible to just buy a pound of mushrooms, take them to your back yard, break them up, and bury them with pasteurized substrate and be able to get your mushroom of choice to colonize and fruit in your back yard?

I know I may be WAY over simplifying the process which seems much more fragile and easily contaminated then I think it is but still… I know that MANY forms of wild mushrooms grow wild around the MI/IN area and a friend has some land up there and I was thinking of trying to seed his property with edible varieties…

Can you tell me if this is even a viable option and if not, why?

Thanks!!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Mushrooms need to grow in temperature, humidity, and light controlled environments, as well as being in a particular type of substrate. Just throwing them out in the backyard would probably produce very inconsistent – and disappointing – results.

Paul asks…

Magic mushrooms growing kits?

What I wanna know is are these illegal or not?! Also is it easy to grow your own magic mushrooms? where would you recommend I buy a kit from?
To add, I live in the UK. I’ve seen kits for sale on the net, but this confuses me if they’re supposed to be illegal?!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Psylocibin mushroom spores are legal to purchase in every state except California, Georgia, and Idaho. They can be somewhat tricky to grow, and can become deadly if there is any contamination during growth. I recommend going to the following site: http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms.shtml

James asks…

grow your own mushrooms?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I’m trying to grow oyster mushrooms right now. I’ve not had luck as of yet but I understand that it can require a lot of waiting. I bought a kit that consists of a small log with holes drilled into it. The holes filled with spores packed into what appears to be sawdust. I bought it at my local co-op about four months ago and I’m still waiting for signs of life.

I’ve been told by someone that grows mushrooms as a hobby that I will probably have better luck ordering kits from Fungi Perfecti. Http://www.fungi.com/

Susan asks…

how do you grow your own magic mushrooms?

wondering and thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

Get a mushroom growing kit and some magic mushrooms. Use the magic mushrooms as the spores and keep moist. Mushrooms don’t need light to grow and will grow in your cupboard.
