Mary asks…

Where can I get a catalogue of winter plants and shrubs? for texas?

online catalogues too!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Easy – go to Cyndi’s site (see url below). She has the biggest catalog of gardening catalogs in the US. If it is not there, there isn’t one

Jenny asks…

Green Garden Peas?

I want to grow peas – just plain old green ones like you get in the freezer section. What variety am I looking for (seeds)?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Just look in the catalogs but I grown Early June peas. Remember to get them in the ground early. Peas can go in the ground as soon as ground temperature is 40 degrees. We are often out in a layer of snow putting in the seeds/ They like cold weather and will soon die when early summer begins. We plant ours in March. Also, allow the peas to soak over night before planting. The seed coat needs to be softened in order for the seedling to break through. Any peas that float on the top are not good seeds. These peas are wonderful. We pick them right off the vine and eat the whole thing. You will need to grow a lot of peas to get even a few servings.

Hi there, I’m currently in Kihei (Maui) and I’m looking to buy some large burlap coffee bags. I just moved to a great area that is growing massively! i want to start my own coffee shack one at a time and get them all over this small city while it is open, there is little to no competition so i think its a good deal for far! i would like to know what it takes to open your own shop and what i will need to know, i have plenty of time and good work ethnic so i think this will work. Any help is appreciated.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You did not indicate where you are; or why you feel a city
in the US does not have many coffee shops; I claim that
in your city, there are many…….perhaps closed today or
hiding with poor signage or in inexpensive locales.

Can guide further

James asks…

addicted to coffee or nicotine?

or both?

GardenersCardiff answers:

My name is John and I am an addict.

I smoked fifty plus cigarettes per day and I have been clean for five years.
My addiction also included coffee abuse and I consumed 25 plus per day.
I owned an urn so I really don’t know how much I was consuming.
I thought it was O.K because most people drink coffee and the habit grew gradually. It took me decades to realise I was suffering from withdrawals when I didn’t get enough caffeine. Symptoms included and were not limited to sweats, bad migraines, and moodiness. I think that I may have been argumentative on these occasions.
I now don’t smoke at all and I consume coffee a few times per week.
I am no longer dependant on any chemicals of any sort!

Richard asks…

Growing herbs at home!?

As I am getting a bigger interest in cooking, I was thinking about to start growing some herbs. Do you grow the outside or indoors? I live in the UK so its pretty cold outside at the minute. What are the best herbs to grow? Is it just pot and soil needed? any help would be appreciated

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are many books on growing herbs – have a browse in your local bookshop. Basically, grow spearmint, basil, parsley, marjoram, chives, thyme, lemon thyme and summer savory for savoury dishes. Rosemary is nice for roast lamb, but it grows into a large bush. You will need about 15 inches square of ground for each herb if you want to have plenty, as pots don’t really yield enough to be useful. Herbs do very well in raised beds. Thyme and marjoram last all winter, the others die off in winter, but you can cut and dry them for winter use. Your own dried herbs make really tasty stuffings and forcemeat.
I should buy seed packets and follow the directions.

Carol asks…

Tips on growing herbs?

I want to grow my own herbs over the winter since I just got the idea now. I want to grow mint, and oregano. This is obviously going to be an indoor project and i might sell some of what I grow. So for those experienced, what are some do’s and dont’s of growing herbs?

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are several ways on growing herbs indoors your best bet is getting a growing cabinet or constructing one yourself. There are also smaller growers like http://www.mysecretpantry.com/departments.asp?dept=39
and believe it or not there are hundreds of tips and help from people who grow cannabis (legally) I would search around dutch websites(translated in English) they always seem to be on top of everything new and exciting when it comes to gardening. There are very simple ways of growing plants/herbs indoors just depends on your workspace and the amount of herbs you plan on growing a simple indoor window box would work. I would Just google for more information

Donna asks…

GARDENING: How to grow your own food?

My fiance was wanting me to ask this question… How do you grow your own food? I personally have a general idea and know how better than he does because I grew up gardening with my father. I was so young then, so having someone throw out tips or anything helpful would be great, because I know I would need a good brushing up.

So, what do we need to know, do…? What’s the perfect weather to start planting seed? What kind of chemicals and stuff would we need to help protect the plants from parasites and what kind of things should we set out to protect the plants from any type of animal? Anything will help us.

Thank you. (:

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow tomatoes & herbs, have a patio garden (all in pots & hanging baskets). I start in the spring, when there is no chance of frost. In my area (SW Ontario, Canada), the rule of thumb is to plant at the end of May. My lettuce grows best when the days are warm & nights are cool (Spring & Fall). Some plants are sensitive. Also, the seed packs will have instructions on them. Most seeds should be started indoors in early spring. Some plants like squash, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, corn & beans are best started in the garden.

Those are some ideas, just read labels & google lots!

Mark asks…

I want to start growing my own dipping tobacco and i am wondering what would be the best type to grow?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow English Burley , Virginia Bright and also seeds from last years crop , what ever may develop . It is the curing and treatment which makes it a dipping use . I really enjoy the Burley.

Lisa asks…

Anyone on here know how to grow tobacco and then turn it into chewing tobacco?

I have always been interested in making my own chew.
How do I grow the plant? I know nothing about it…
I’ve heard it is a leaf when grown.. But It starts out as a seed right?
Can someone tell me about tobacco?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Nancy asks…

Is growing my own Tobacco and smoking with no added chemicals better then buying it from the store?

So, i’m looking into growing my own tobacco and I want to know, will it be better for me than buying it from a gas station. It’ll be smoked, most likely it’ll end up being a cigar, but it’ll be straight from the plant, no added chemicals. Will it be better and still addictive?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You may be undertaking a little more then you may want to.
I mean the tobacco in gas stations may be crap but it has been honed over years and years to be as crappy as it is today. The curing process alone is mind-boggling. Fun! But mind-boggling. Your tobacco may not taste good the first few plants. Especially if you have never grown a plant before. As for it being better, as i said tobacco companies took years to make their stuff and your just starting. They do all types of soil testing and ph testing. So it would be hard to say. As for the nicotine, cigarettes contain 10% nicotine. Tobacco naturally grows with any where from .05% to 3% Nicotine, depending on the strain. The other is added by the company along with other chemicals. So your first cigar probably wont taste good, smell good, and will have less nicotine. Overtime you should be able to make something more palatable but thats the fun of growing your own.

Richard asks…

Gardening durring “end of times/SHTF/government takeover/rebellion” when food supplies are low? Equipment?

I have about 500 bucks I’d be willing to put towards equipment for growing in a shelter, one that would have no light likely being built out of concrete.
Sorry, my keyboard went dead and i had to cut it short.. yes, i would be running off of either a crank energy source or solar panels, to fuel the power needed for the lights that are capable of growing plants, i would like to know where i could get this type of equipment, Lights. panels, what types of plants are the best for growing under these conditions and time is a matter since it would be a small concrete room under the surface food would need to be raised fast.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You would be better off buying a lot of canned and freeze dried foods. To start growing food if there is a catastrophe would take too long and you’d die of hunger before it grew. And as mentioned above, no light equals no growth. And $500 won’t start to equip a real shelter. Gets some canned stuff in case you need it and don’t over worry.

Lisa asks…

Prices for garden supplies?

I need to know the prices of garden equipment, products etc.
This could include the price of:
* fertalizer
* Plants
* Hoses
* Water Features

Anyone have an idea on where to find this?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well, you can go to home depot or check at ebay.com

Charles asks…

What should a 16 year old wear to a job interview at a garden shop?

I’m interested in getting a job at a local garden supply job but I’m not quite sure what I should wear. Any suggestions for my resume while on that topic?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well you should wear something that says “i’m ready to work!” not something that says “I don’t care are you giving me the job or not”.But i suggest a nice skirt black what ever suits you a nice collared shirt boots, heels, flats. And a flowered headband (if you have one) and that’s what i think!

Mary asks…

Cigarettes vs. Weed?

My older and I were having a discussion about this topic. His smokes cigarettes, I smoke weed. He’s 18, I’m a 17-year old guy. Here’s the gist of the arguments.

My brother’s arguments:

Weed is not legal, first and foremost. It kills brain cells which cannot be regenerated. Often times you are buying from shady characters, so it could be laced with more dangerous substances. It is a gateway drug which with prolonged use has the potential to lead to other addictions, such as cocaine. It impairs the mind and changes your personality when under the influence. It carries a social stigma to it that could be a turnoff to prospective employers.

My arguments:

Cigarettes are several times more toxic than weed. They are readily available to the underage public, also illegal. They contain nicotine, making smoking an extremely difficult habit to quit. Unlike weed, they are extremely addictive, and many people die every year as a result of smoking. It can be very expensive, whereas weed you can grow you own self. Weed is a plant, whereas cigarettes contain several very unhelathy additives. Weed is totally safe in moderation and there is no evidence supporting “gateway drug” theory.”

In your opinion, who has the stronger argument?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Cigarettes are not more toxic than weed and weed is very addictive. Anything can become addictive and weed its self has more tar and carcinogens than tobacco. Both contain unhealthy additives and weed is only not as bad for you if you do grow it yourself. Lots of the things you say are not fully true so I would say your brother. Also purchasing weed contributes to the drug violence in Mexico and South America.

Steven asks…

Has anyone grown there own weed plant?

Has anyone grown there own weed plant?
Was it successful, and if so Please provide me with a picture of it.
i live in Uk and i want to start my own growth.

GardenersCardiff answers:

And a picture will help you grown your own…how?

*shrug*

You know, smoking that stuff is not going to improve your vocabulary any. Look in the dictionary for the difference between “there” and “their”.

That said, go ahead and subscribe to High Times magazine if you really want to. All you need to know and more about growing.

And good luck with that. If you’re serious about it, you should also research the local laws in your area applicable to that hobby.

Laura asks…

What supplies do you need to start a garden?

I have a garden plot but it’s just dirt with some tanbark on top. what supplies do i need to prepare it? I just moved and i dont even have a hose.thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

You will need to get a hose for sure! Also you will need at least a shovel and a rake. A rototiller would be good to rent or borrow if it a good size plot. Depending on the quality of the soil you might need compost mixed in . I would remove the tan bark instead of mixing it into the garden soil though other would just mix it in .you will have so much enjoyment! I had my first tomato yesterday from my garden .

Ken asks…

If I were to start a gardening club at my school what kind of supplies would I need to buy for us to use?

Hypothetically speaking, that is. This is a project for my economics class. (However we do have a chance at actually getting this to happen) I need to know what kind of supplies to get. I’ve never done gardening before but the idea was proposed by my partner. I’ll handle how much to get and researching the places to buy/the cost…. but it would be really helpful if someone with experience in gardening could help me out in preparing the equipment/materials. Any tips would be VERY appreciated, too! Thanks a lot!!!

GardenersCardiff answers:

First thing would be to have your soil checked and see what you might be missing and need to add. Not sure how much they charge for that. With that done, collecting the needed supplies wont be cheap. Renting a tiller would be the best- you really don’t want to own one they break down a lot. Once the area is tilled, its time to add what the soil is missing, and u will need rakes- there are 2 kind, one fan, one straight tine. Actually you might need both. And lets don’t forget, the shovel’s to break up the clods. There are 2 types of them also – flat head and pointed, use both. The 2 shovel’s will help break up the soil. Ok now if your half dead now you will need to amend the soil with rake and shovel, Buy some seeds, and some fertilize that are made for them. Plant the seeds water them in. Oh, yea that’s one hose, length and water source? Next you will need markers to remember where what is planted, and if the plant is a vine, or needs a trellis, cage for tomatoes. Then you have to keep watering them if there is no rain, and if there is you have to watch so the seeds wont go where there not suppose to. Then watch it grow.

Richard asks…

What is a way to get donated plants and supplies to start gardens at my middle school?

I work for Jackson Public Schools in Jackson, MS and am planning to celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by planting flowers and need potting soil, flowers, etc. I cannot afford all of this on my own. Any suggestions?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Call around to your local nurseries. If they donate the things to your school, they can get a tax deduction for it, plus it’s free advertising for them.

Jenny asks…

can you buy seeds to grow your own tea in australia?

i would like to grow some tea bushs to make geen tea thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes, Diggers Seeds have an online catalogue and can be ordered. They are a bit hard to grow from seeds. Can sometimes buy the plants fairly cheaply. It’s a species of camellia.
Our local nursery sells them.
They are sometimes available from ebay

Follow the link below, they have them for $2.85 a pack

Hope this helps

Lisa asks…

Click Here If You Have Grown Your Own Tea?

I like tea, and I heard that the stuff you buy in the grocery store has toxins from the chemicals and processing done to it. I plan to grow my own tea, harvest it, then add my own mix of flavours and see how it turns out. If it turns out well I might sell it. I need to know the following

What kind of tea do I need to grow?
How do I harvest it?
How long does it take to grow?

GardenersCardiff answers:

This would as difficult and tedious as trying to make your own wine by growing your own grapes. You can try it, but the results will likely be mediocre unless you invest a lot of time money and effort into it. On a personal scale, I don’t think it would be worth it.

It’s not easy, but if you have the money to order them $$$, then order several tea plants. It would be great if you have a big enough yard to plant at least a dozen tea shrubs. You will need the patience and knowledge on how to grow them, easily searchable online I guess. They will take a few years to get to a reasonable size. This process can take years, I am telling you. Its not instant gratification. You would also need to research on how to properly prepare the tea leaf buds for drying.

Mary asks…

how to grow your own tea Leafs?

thats it how do you grow tea leafs where do you get the seeds? what eve i need to know

GardenersCardiff answers:

You have to get the tea tree from New Zealand. The best bet is to contact a Maori Iwi. Iwi translates from Maori to English as I Wont It. Tea tree grows very well in America. It probaly grows better than Pohutikawa does in San Fransico.
