Daniel asks…

Olive Garden vs Red Lobster?

I want to get my parents a $50 gift card for somewhere to eat for Christmas, and I was thinking of Red Lobster or Olive Garden…

Which is better? Which is cheaper?

I’ve been to Olive Garden and it’s really good (IMO) and I think it’s cheaper, but I’ve never been to Red Lobster, which I’m leaning towards for them.

Which gift card should I get them, that will get them good food to fill them up (as much as 50 dollars can lol, that’s all I have!)

If not Red Lobster or Olive Garden, what gift card should I get them? They hate fried/greasy foods lso nothing like Applebees, IHOP, Fridays, Chili’s, etc.

Something “classy” I guess. I know Olive Garden isn’t really classy lol but it’ll do. So something like that.

Thank you!
Haha I live in Dallas so of course there’s many amazing restaurants, but I don’t think I can afford those 🙁

GardenersCardiff answers:

Olive Garden is priced well enough for them to purchase two meals, dessert, and drinks all at around $50. In addition Olive Garden carries a very light, romantic ambiance which your parents I think would appreciate very much. The type of food that is served is italian and is well portioned, however they typically use many cheese and oil based sauces with their pasta dishes making them inevitably greasy, which may not be appetizing according to what you stated regarding your parents food liking.
Red Lobster on the other hand is a more sensible choice if they are watching their diet, they carry some light seafood dishes that are filling yet not saturated with salt and grease. The pricing is heavier so they would most likely have to leave dessert out. The enviorment is more family oriented and sociable so maybe it won’t be the best “date” night, per se, but it would be nonetheless a good night considering the great seafood dishes that Red Lobster has.
I would say Red Lobster is the best choice.
🙂

Mandy asks…

what is a good 50th wedding anniversary gift?

My friend from work that I have known about 40 yrs is having a 50th anniversary. What should I get them that would not be another nick knack to sit around and collect dust and not be too expensive? I Love her lots but dont have much money.Any ideas ? and is it rude to show up without a gift?

GardenersCardiff answers:

On a budget, I would think a golden rose bush would be appropriate.
A friend of mine sent me some rose plants from Tyler, and they were lovely.

A fiftieth is the golden wedding anniversary, and a rose bush would bloom for years to come in their garden. A gift that would keep on giving, and wouldn’t cost the earth.

Here is a list of rose varieties to check out:
Gold Symphonie
Golden Anniversary
Golden Beryl
Golden Celebration
Golden Future
Golden Handshake
Golden Kiss
Golden Memories
Golden Mimi
Golden Wedding
Golden Wedding Anniversary
Golden Wedding Celebration
Goldfinch
Good as Gold
Happy Anniversary

Ruth asks…

What is a good gift to give someone who likes to garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

A gift certificate for fedco seeds. (www.fedcoseeds.com)

They are an excellent source for heirloom seeds and do not sell any genetically morphed seeds 🙂

The catalogs are invaluable – if you have time, call them and get the catalogs to give with the certificate.

Lizzie asks…

my vegetable garden?

ok I have a little garden going, I have tomatoes, jalapeños, bell peppers, red chili peppers and cilantro that I bought and they had the vegetables growing on them and its been 3 weeks since I planted them and they are all dead, and I also have seeds growing sunflowers and onions, and there doing just fine. Now the weather here has been hot in the high 90’s and even topping 100, and I went out every night watering them and every other week giving them food, and there still dead except for one tomatoes plant my goliath tomatoes, any thing I can do to bring them back ok keep my others from dieing?
I do wait till the sun goes down, and if my plant dont sprout back up next year ill go seeds, cause i did plant sunflowers from seeds adn there dooing greate

GardenersCardiff answers:

Lots of things can go wrong in a garden, including overfertilizing and overwatering, as the previous answerer stated.

You need to get your soil tested, to find out the pH and the amount of essential nutrients available. Check at stores that sell gardening supplies and they should be able to tell you how to get a test run. Here in Tennessee, the Univ. Of Tennessee has regional labs that handle it for about $ 6. It’s a bit late to help you out this summer, of course.

Plants don’t need watering every night. A good soaking once or twice a week is actually better for the plants.

Keep trying — gardening is a fun activity and you’ll have success sooner or later.

Helen asks…

Where can I buy fish emulsion?

I need it for my garden

GardenersCardiff answers:

Any place that sells garden supplies. It is a very popular form of fertilizer, Home Depot has it, but I’m gonna have to recommend your local garden supplier.

Secret Santa: gardening gift ideas?

We are having a Secret Santa in our office and the name that I picked is for a woman who I don’t know much about. All I know is that she has a nice garden near her home. Last year, I picked her name and I bought her a plant. She loved it! I don’t want to get her the same gift this year. It’s too difficult to transport from home during the morning rush hour. Any suggestions? The maximum is $20. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

She would like a gift card to a gardening center.

Linda asks…

Can you redeem gift cards with different companies?

What’s this I’m hearing about business’ accepting gift cards from other companies? Are all the major places like Best Buy, Home Depot and Wal-Mart in on this? I have a Khol’s card I’d rather use at one of these places. Any links with detailed info or a list of participating business’ would be much appreciated!

GardenersCardiff answers:

The only way you could use a giftcard elsewhere would be if they were all owned by the same company like….red lobster giftcards can be used at Olive Garden,Bahamas Breeze…..

Khol’s is a great place to shop, why would you not want to shop there?

Good luck and happy shopping!

James asks…

What should I eat at Olive Garden?

I’m taking my mom and sister to eat at Olive Garden (late mothers day gift) once I get out of school for the summer break (thank god). This is my first time going and I’ve read reviews on it being bad, but I still want to try it. My question is what do you like to eat there? Besides the breadsticks and appetizers.

GardenersCardiff answers:

My favorite thing at Olive Garden is the Fettuccine or Chicken Alfredo. Other things that are delicious include Chicken Parmesan, Spaghetti, and the Chicken Marsala. Personally I love the dishes that have alfredo based sauces because they are creamy and delicious. This past weekend I tried the Asiago-Garlic Fettuccine which was very good as well.

I choose soup instead of salad to go with the breadsticks. The Zuppa Toscana is very good and my latest favorite is the Chicken ‘n’ Gnocchi.

Steven asks…

What gift should I get for my 2 years old son?

I already planned for his birthday party this week on Sunday. He have so many clothes and toys. What gift should I get for my son?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi there,

I think it depends on the personality of your child. What does he like? Some children love to attend live children’s concerts. Some love picture books. There are some good learning video cassettes like “Baby Einstein” or “Baby Mozart” series. There are children’s version of laptop computers. Some children like attending special children’s workshops, for examples, art & craft, music, dancing, sports, gardening, drama, photography etc. There exist a lot of workshops that offer free trial sessions that you may like to consider.

A trip to a place of interest also might be appealing to your child.

Personally, I would buy what my child finds “cool”.

Most importantly, I’m sure you have already prepared for him a day filled with joy, laughter, and loving memories.

Wishing your child a Super Happy Birthday!

Michael asks…

Can you use Applebees gift cards at other restaurants?

For example on an Olive Garden gift card I got, you could use it at Macaroni Grill, and some other affiliates. Does Crapplebees have this type of affiliation with another restaurant chain that you could use the gift card at?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Applebees is incorporated with IHOP. I have never heard of them sharing gift cards like Darden Resturants (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Seasons 52, Longhorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, and The Capital Grille.) That is why they can share gift cards amongst the restaurants Because they are the largest full service restauants. That makes it easier to use the gift cards. Compared to just two resturants. Darden is the only place I have heard of that allows sharing of gift cards.

Nancy asks…

Is this a good gift to get my dad for his birthday?

I’m visiting my dad for his birthday..I haven’t seen him in a long time..Anyway I was thinking about getting him an Olive Garden gift card..I wasn’t sure what else to get him, and I know that he likes Olive Garden, and also he said I don’t have to get him anything but I want to anyway..So is this a good idea? Any other special suggestions?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Would be nice if you gave it to him and maybe went with him, I don’t know how long your visiting. It may also be nice to give him a nice picture of you to keep.

Paul asks…

Can I bring Chia garden herb in my suitcase and take it overseas on an airplane?

I want to take the Chia herb garden as a gift to my friend overseas but can I take seeds on a plane?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It depends on where you are going. You’d need to find out what the seeds are (what herbs) and then contact the agricultural department for the country you are going to and ask them if the seeds are allowed. Not all countries allow all plants.

Conservatives: Should a Private Business have the right to refuse a Patron displaying a US flag on their land?

Read this:
http://blogs.ajc.com/news-to-me/2011/10/12/olive-garden-says-no-to-u-s-flag/?cxntlid=thbz_hm

This seems like a huge moral quandary to conservatives.
They profess their full-throated love for this country and her flag nonstop.
But at the same time, they insist corporations are people to, and businesses deserve liberty.

I wonder which side they’ll take… Olive Garden… or this 80 year-old woman…

GardenersCardiff answers:

Absolutely not. Hating the flag should be considered treason and the offender deported or interned in a labor camp.

Olive Garden did not pull Letterman Ads. More Right Wing Lies?

http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/18/olive-garden-says-it-did-not-cancel-ads-on-letterman-show/

Apparently an actual spokesperson for Olive Garden, said the restaurant did not pull ads from David Letterman’s show schedule.
Rich Jeffers, from the Olive Garden, said the news item in the right wing Politico by Andy Barr, “is erroneous”.

So the Politico made up a source and claimed Olive Garden pulled their ads from Letterman. The Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebels said, “tell a lie big enough, and over and over again and it becomes truth.” Not this time….

GardenersCardiff answers:

Typical…many of those Conservatives are incredibly gullible.

Can they take tips out of gift card balances?

If you use a gift card and you want to leave a tip, can you take the tip out of the gift card balance? How does that work? For example, for Olive Garden gift cards.

GardenersCardiff answers:

No, a gift card balance is money that goes directly to the restraunt. A tip however, goes to the waitress.

Donna asks…

How do I stop all the spam emails I get?

I filled out a survey to get a free olive garden gift card.I did not get the card but I cant stop all the junk mail now in my spam folder.

GardenersCardiff answers:

99% of the free offers are scam when the amount of the prize is over a few dollars. It is just to get your address to sell to mailing lists. I am sorry but it is next to impossible to stop. Many spam emails have a link to remove you but the majority of the time it just confirms that you exist.

NOTE: If the junk mail is actually in your spam folder then the Yahoo filter is doing what it is supposed to do.

Thomas asks…

What’s the best plant for someone bad at gardening?

I’m not exaggerating – I’ve killed an aloe plant, rosemary (twice), even a bamboo that you only have to water once a month! Right now I have a cactus as a gift and I’ve kept it alive for almost 6 months and would like to expand. I’m looking for an indoor plant and get some sun (I’m on the west side of my building). Sometimes I go away for a weekend and don’t really have anyone to water plants for me. Ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Spider plants are hard to kill, and beginner gardners have luck with them:

Jenny asks…

Is there any way to send a coupon or gift card to a Myspace email?

I am wanting to send a gift card to someone’s Myspace email account. Do you know if this is possible? Do you know which companies would allow this? For example, could I send an Olive Garden gift card to their email and they could download it and use it or claim it at a local Olive Garden?

GardenersCardiff answers:

This would work with online coupons all you have to do is send them the link or send them the picture of the coupon that you downloaded…however as far as i know any major retailer would require an actual gift card (those pretty little plastic things) in which case you would need to either mail it to the person or give it to them (read: a gift…)

Donna asks…

I got an olive garden gift card for Xmas. What should I order?

I think olive garden is a crock. I’ve been to locally-owned Italian restaurants owned by the same Italian families for years and years. I have no interest in the McDonald’s of Italian food. So, what’s so great about it? Win me over, if possible.
Ps- I can’t sell the card, my MIL works there, so she’d know. And I’m not ungrateful.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I like that soup that has the little dumplings in it. {but they could easily cut out some of the salt in it; and it might even be better.}

For the main course, go for something that is more meat, cheese, and sauce. A chicken entree would probably be your best choice there.

Carol asks…

Would it be rude to open gifts at the wedding reception?

I’m having a small wedding(under 30 people) and the reception will be at either Red Lobster or Olive Garden. I want to open gifts at the reception, but my mom says it would be rude to those that don’t bring gifts.

Would it be rude? I’m not greedy, I just thought it’d be fun to do at the reception.

So should me and my fiance open them at the restuaraunt or on our honeymoon?

HELP!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I don’t think it would be in very good taste. Many people don’t bring gifts at all – they bring cash in a card, and it’s really not polite to open cash gifts in front of others. That’s best done at home, in private, for both etiquette AND security/safety purposes. You don’t want to be walking out of some family restaurant with wads of loose cash!

Also, remember that guests have plenty of time after your wedding to send a gift on. If someone wants to wait (say, until their payday) to buy and mail a gift, it would be very uncomfortable for them to have that fact highlighted by their gift not being there at the time of the opening.

Follow your mum’s advice, she knows what she’s talking about.
