Steven asks…

Do you grow your own vegetables and herbs or do you buy them from the market?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Living on a village has its good sides. I have made a a small hot-house and there, herbal plants that need care are growing and so do lettuces, peppers and tomatoes. Out on the open are growing spinach, cabbages, leeks and onions.
Many years ago we grew potatoes too, but moles got the best of the crop. So that was given up. In all, the bought green groceries are limited to fruit, mostly during the summer.

John asks…

Pagans, have you ever tried to make your own wine or mead for your rituals or as offerings?

Do you grow your own herbs for religious purposes? If so, what herbs did/do you grow? Do you feel that this has deepened the experience for you?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I brew my own wine for rituals (and as a hobby). I make my wine from grapes that I buy from a vineyard. I don’t grow any herbs for the process, as herbs are not normally added to grape wines. While I’d love to grow my own grapes, I don’t have the space or resources to cultivate a vineyard at this time.

Considering that Dionysos is my patron deity, making wine has been a very powerful ritual experience. Dionysos’ mythology has many subtle and not-so-subtle connections to the vine, the wine, and the lifecycles of both. My understanding of these connections have deepened considerably since I’ve taken up winemaking as a hobby.
