With all the controversy over how tobacco should be illegal, and weed should be legal, why don’t we compromise?
Why don’t we make them both illegal to mass produce, illegal to sell, but legal to grow on your own for personal consumption? If you want the drugs, you’ll need to work for it, but you’ll be able to have as much as you want.
To Jennifer d: Oh, how I wish!
I’m totally down with that buddy!

I am not a smoker, but some of my friends are. They are upset about the price of cigarettes. Is it feasible for them to grow their own tobacco?
There seems to be some differnce of opinion about whether or not it is legal to grow your own tobacco.
Sure is me and my father inlaw have looked into it and planned on doing it it will taste better and not have all the crazy chemicals in it. And growing it isnt going to be that hard at all we have a garden anyways and we just put up a green house last fall for gowin all year i cant wait to start this project and bo its not illegal unless u are trying to sell it

I would like to try and grow my own tobacco and try to make my own smokes. has any one done this and what do I need to know before I get started?
Burley tobacco seeds are available from Gurney’s seed and nursery as well as others.
Easy to grow, smells good in the flower garden. In fact ornamental tobacco is a popular flower. As for the flavor, that might disappoint you. Your smokes are made from blends some of which are aged or cured in specific ways. Flavoring is also added, including vanilla chocolate and licorice so you might not like the taste of natural tobacco.

I’ve been reading a lot of people saying that the theoretical tax revenues generated by legalizing cannabis would not exist, because everyone would simply be growing their own. Don’t those people know that tobacco is a plant that grows just as naturally as cannabis? I don’t hear of many people planting, harvesting, drying, and curing their own tobacco simply because they can.
I don’t smoke tobacco, though it seems more convenient to just go pick up a pack of state-taxed smokes than to grow your own.
That makes no sense at all. People can make a lot of things on their own, but don’t. Have you seen this thing called a restaurant? Of course people can make their own food at home, yet night after night, these places are filled! People can make their own bread, but why bother when the market has it available for such a good price?

If you had it growing in your yard, for your own use, or for use (free) by people who would otherwise ask for cigarette money, is it legal?
Thanks to you all. I think we have a near-concensus that it can be grown with little trouble (legally), but that selling it involves more complication. I think several answers are “good” but must pick only one “best”.
Yes legal. In fact i had some about christmas that a local guy grew. He needs to work on the curing process, but it is legal to grow, however not to sell. You would need a tax stamp for that and that may be difficult. Farmers do grow it evey year in several states.

Is it legal to grow your own cigarette tobacco, and if so where could I get the seeds or plants?
Just about any seed catalogue can offer you tobacco seeds at a cheap price. Growing the tobacco itself doesn’t help much, even if you can grow it without the blights tobacco in itself is subjective to. It’s all in the curing of it that comes part and parcel of the deal. It’s certainly legal to grow your own tobacco, which I find curious as cannabis (aka marijuana) is in itself an indigenous herb grown in the “wild” but still remains prohibitive according to the the FDA regs. I’ve grown my own tobacco and even gone so far as to try and cure it on my own via text-book directions, but it’s always ended up being non-smokeable. Unless you really like that lung-burning and raw sensation. If you’re able to connect with people “in the know”, I’d say either give it up or just pay the price.

Did you know that a tobacco addict cannot manage to grow their own tobacco? Do you know anyone that does grow there own quality tobacco? Are you trying to quit because of the new taxes?
I’ve heard of a few that said they will quit because of the new taxes, but saying it and doing it are two different things. I quit years ago.

Does anyone know if it is possible to grow your own tobacco at home? The reason I want to do this is obvious. With the price of cigarettes up to $9 a pack where I am from. Plus I read or heard that if you grow your own tobacco it won’t have additives or preservatives and from what I understand these are capable of producing cancer just as much as the tobacco itself if not more. Also, If you can grow your own tobacco can you grow it indoors??
Actually you can. I have been growing my own tobacco for about a year now. Surprisingly it is a lot easier and simpler than most people think. It is no more difficult that growing lettuce or tomato. You can grow it indoors but you get the best and sweetest tobacco growing it outdoors. Something about real sunlight that just makes the tobacco come out better. When you smoke tobacco you have grown yourself you will be absolutely amazed at how much different it tastes but in a good way. It just tastes more natural and real. My recommendation is to grow it outdoors during whatever your growing season is. Either grow enough to last you through the winter or grow it indoors during the winter. Just so you know. When you grow your own tobacco at home it costs about a dollar to make your own pack of cigarettes so you save big TIME!. The best guide out there and the one that I use is called Roll, Grow, Smoke your own
