Mandy asks…

Herb and Flower Drying…..?

I’m reading a book on growing and harvesting your own herbs and flowers for medicial, skin care, hair care and health ingeneral reasons.

They say to bunch long-stem flowers and herbs and to bundle herbs/flowers such as lavender, St. John’s wert etc.

In gardening, what is the difference between a bunch and bundle? I thought they were the same lol.

GardenersCardiff answers:

They are the same, just tie the stems and hang up side down in a dry place

John asks…

Tips for growing your own herbs in containers?

Hello all, I would like to start growing my own herbs next year and was wondering if you had any hints or tips at all? I’m going to be growing them in containers as I have a small patioed garden. The containers are going to have to be plastic as my money wont stretch to some nice terracota ones! I’m looking to grow basil, corriander, rosemary and thyme as these are the ones I use most often. What would be the best type of compost to use? Multi-purpose compost I suppose?

I am a beginner at this so any help would be much appreciated, thanks 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have a garden for my vegetables but my herbs are in pots so I can keep them close to the house for easy harvest. The right size pot. Rosemary and basil require a larger pot 18″ +. Coriander and thyme can be grown in a smaller pot 12″ +. Use all purpose potting soil. Make sure you have good drainage. Remove the saucer. You do not want your plants sitting in a saucer of stagnant water – not to mention the breeding ground for mosquitoes. Give them full sun – 6 – 8 hours. Adjust your watering schedule to the season. All purpose water soluble fertilizer monthly during the growing season. When the plants begin to produce flowers cut off the flowers to extend your growing time.

LOL

Chris asks…

Do you grow your own tomatoes at your garden?

Living in southern California, gaves me a great opportunity in growing my own herbs and spices.

So I def grow my own tomatoes. Much more delicious then buying them from the grocery store! lol

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes. I also grow my own lettuce, onions, peas, beets, carrots, beans, corn, broccoli, potatoes, radishes, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers and pumpkins.

It’s called ‘gardening’ and people all over the world do it.
