salt and pepper – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-487/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-487/#respond Mon, 01 Jul 2013 12:05:02 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-487/

Nancy asks…

Looking for a climbing flower blooming flower/plant. Live in between zone 5/6 in the midwest?

I like right on the map where zones 5 and 6 cross I need a climbing plant to put in one of my gardens. Any names you know of that would grow well?
I have alot of rose bushes in my backyard. I didn’t even realize there were climbing roses!! Do they go by a certain name or are they just called climbing roses?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Clematis, wisteria, climbing roses for perennials.

Hyacinth bean, cardinal flower, cypress vine, blackeyes susan (thunbergia) for annuals.

Edit: there are quite a number of varieties of roses which climb. They are varieties of rose bushes which develop long canes. Here are some examples:

Sharon asks…

Is there any real Italians out there who can please give me a recipe for real home made Italian Tomato Puree?

When i lived in italy for a short time in the late 70’s in a little village called Vaglia outside Firenze i got friendly with the local farmer’s wife – she gave me the recepe but have lost it. I use to make it when i was in Italia and there is nothing to compare the real thing – can someone please help?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I hope you have garden fresh tomatoes because the ones that you buy from the store are flavorless. Here is a couple recipes that I have used. Hope this helps.

Tomato Puree
1 onion
3 stalks celery
3 sweet peppers
12 cups tomatoes (quartered)

SIMMER all ingredients until soft.
Press through sieve, season with salt and pepper.
Fill jars to within 1/2 inch of top.
Put on cap, screw band firmly tight.
Process in Boiling Water Bath 45 minutes.

Oven Roasted Tomato Paste or Puree
4-5 lbs ripe tomatoes
2 tablespoons olive oil
4-5 garlic cloves, minced
salt and pepper
dried basil
dried oregano

Peel tomatoes. The easiest way to do this is to drop them into a container of boiling-hot water, leave for 30 seconds, then drop them into a container of ice-water – the skin slips right off). Halve them and put into a baking pan large enough to hold them in one layer.
Dribble with olive oil (the amount is arbitrary – I imagine that’s about what I use), sprinkle with minced garlic, generously season with salt, pepper, basil and oregano. Give everything a stir to distribute.
Pop into 350F oven and roast for about 3 hours (this is approximate – it all depends on how thick you want your puree or paste).
When they’re done, I like to mash the tomatoes into a paste because I like a more rustic texture. If you want smoother, use a processor.
I keep the puree/paste in a tupperware container, in the refrigerator, covered by a thin film of olive oil to prevent oxidization. I dig into it almost daily to provide a burst of flavour into many, many dishes like soups, stews, sauces, gravies, omelettes, etc.
This freezes well, too

Chris asks…

How to go from pads to outside?

I know a lot of people say you shouldn’t of used your house as a toilet but I had no choice, I don’t have a garden and I live in a ground floor flat, and didn’t want my puppy to catch anything as he is only just aloud out, my puppy has mastered his pad which is by the patio door, any idea of how to get him to go outside? As soon as we come in he does it on his pad

GardenersCardiff answers:

Puppies normally need to urinate every 15-20 minutes. Take him out after playing, after a nap, and after food. They need to poop every hour and a half or so. Take him out, and when he goes say something like “Go pee” or “Toilet” and keep saying it till hes finished, then praise him and give him a treat. Then when you go out next and he does it, use the word command again while hes doing it. He’ll come to realize that the word you use, mean he needs to use the bathroom, and he’ll eventually go. My puppy used to go on command when i said “go pee”, and it made life much easier.
He’ll get there eventually, you just have to be quick, patient and persistent.

Good luck.

Linda asks…

Good Recipe for easy home made pasta sace??

i have a few cans of diced tomatoes and an herb garden, so i think i want to make a pasta sauce, but ive never made one from scratch.. any suggestions for recipeis or any tips? HELP!?!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Take 4 cans of diced tomatoes (or less, depending on batch size) I like to pulverize them a little to help break them down but i usually use whole tomatoes. Anywho, chop some garlic and an onion. Take a big pan and saute the garlic and onion in olive oil, add a little redpepper flakes. When the onion turns translucent add the tomatoes. Do not burn the garlic!!! I always add a pinch of sugar and a dash of vinegar to bring out the flavors. Cook for as long as you can, the longer the better. SEason with salt and pepper, and add the herbs like basil and parsley at the last few minutes. It’s a delicious simple recipe, it’s excellent with chicken parmesean!

Steven asks…

I am looking for this tool for digging holes that made it easy.?

This metal tool is T shaped and the garden hose attached to one side of the top of the T. Then when you squeeze the trigger, water shoots out of the bottom of the T. When it is pushed into the ground, it injects water and basically flushes out a hole. I had one that eventually wore out and have not been able to find another one. Can anyone tell me where to find one here in the midwest? Thanks for your time and have a great weekend!

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you are looking for something that is NOT pressurized beyond the normal household water pressure in the garden hose then what you are looking for may be a “ROOT FEEDER” these are used to get water and nutrients down to the root zone of bushes and trees.

My father had one years ago, that had a space for fetilizer tablets to be inserted so that they dissolved into the water as the tree roots were watered.

They were not designed to “dig holes” for other purposes, but they did soak the ground and shoot the water in a concentrated stream that allowed you to slowly (eventually if the ground was hard) push it down into the ground to root level.

Here are some I found online, (I do NOT know anythig about them.)

http://www.thefind.com/garden/info-root-feeder

Professional ROSS® Root Feeder

http://rootfeed.com/ross_comparison.html

My guess is that any larger Garden supply, or larger Hardware supply, like Lowes, will have these.
