Mushrooms are categorize in fungi and by no means produce their own food. They are exclusively hetrotrophs.
So long as ferns are concerned they reproduce by forming spores. But if you think the ferns are reproducing with cactus ,the answer is not for sure.

Because there may come a day when you have no choice but to grow some of your own food and I would hate to wait until that day to start learning, kind of like waiting till the power is out to run for flashlight batteries. Have you ever been to the store and observed how people act when a storm is coming? Its never a good idea to be completely dependent upon any one system. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for our ancestors growing there own food and its foolish to think that we shouldn’t carry on some of these traditions that got us where we are now.

The lawn.. the lawn along with the suburb is an absolute ecological disaster.
I think that if people took the extra time and effort to grow their own food the world would be a lot more peaceful and happier.
Gardening is hard work which would require the American fatass to work and work hard for his food – people would get more exercise and eat healthier.
My last point is it would greatly improve the biodiversity of this planet – there used to be 1000s of different kinds of potatoes now there are only 4. so how about instead of living in the middle of grass we live in the middle of a forest with many different bugs and butterflys that live with the plants to ensure sustainability.
oh yea and whats all this stuff about making growing your own food illegal? can they do that? or will civil disobediance result in a few well needed public hangings?

Can you solder or braze a hole in an automobile AC line?
My my wife ran over a garden tool and it put a small hole in the AC line that connects down by the bottom of the radiator. I have found the hole and was wondering if it can be soldered or some kind of weld can be done to plug the hole. I hope this is not an expensive repair.

NO it can not be fixed like that. In the long run it will cost you way more!! If you get trash in your ac line then you take a chance on destroying your compressor and drier!! So save your self the headache and expense and buy a new ac line.

I grew some basil and some oregano once and it was awesome. The basil was so strong, it was almost hot. When the herbs got just to the point of budding, but not yet blooming, I cut them down and hung them upside down in the garage to dry. This forces all of the essential oils out to the foliage prior to drying. I then cut the stems to fit into mason jars. I didn’t crush them right away. I only did that when I used them. This preserves the oils and keeps the flavor intense long after you cut them.

I grow parsley–curly leaf and Italian and they are much better tasting than store bought. And I can just take off what I need as I need it. In my last yard, my parsley was uncontrollable–it overwintered, spread seeds everywhere, I was pulling it up, giving it away, my kids were ODing on it. It was crazy.
I also grow chives–that is so cool. It’s oniony and garlicky but delicate all in one. And the green is so pretty in all sorts of dishes. I grow that in a pot tha I planted oh, 9 years ago? That one packet of seeds has really paid off!
Basil–I plant it every year. To me it really signifies summer is here. While I was at Home Depot gathering some new plants, an elderly woman told me she picks her basil leaves and puts them in freezer containers as is, and she uses them all winter. I can’t wait to try this tip!
Lavender–I’m growing this for the first time this year. Not quite sure what to do with it yet, but I love lavender and just enjoy sniffing it every time I go past.
Let’s see, I planted Thyme, oregano and cilantro
Mint– I have to disagree with Christa. I’ve grown mint in my yard since 2000 and never had any problems–not like the killer parsley! We use it in watermelon, mint and lime salad, iced tea with mint, hot mint tea, tobouli salad and just to chew on.
I guarantee that once you start growing herbs, you’ll be hooked. The scent, the taste, the usefulness, the ease…Enjoy!

im trying to grow my own herbs and i dont know where to start, plus im on a poor mans budget so help me please find the cheapest, idiot proof ways to growing my own herbs….

Most herbs are really pretty forgiving. They like a well drained soil so if you’re using potting soil, mix in some sand and/or vermiculite (very cheap and a little goes a long way).
Herbs need full sun, too so be sure you have a southern exposure for at least 4-6 hours per day.
During the spring it’s easy to find seed packets because everyone is getting ready to plant. At this time of year, I’m not sure what you’ll find in the way of seeds but if you have a local nursery, you should still find some packets available. If they’re packaged for 2008, you may also get a price break – the season is over.
I will assume you already know what kinds of herbs you want, but I would just give you one suggestion:
Mints are VERY pervasive so I’d keep those in a separate pot – otherwise they’ll invade everything else.

What do weed trees look like?
I have a big problem in my back yard! All the trees that were beautiful and big keep dying, and a bunch of new ones keep growing on their own. I think the ones that are growing on their own are a result of weeds. Does anyone have any pictures that I can see to confirm these are bad trees and so I can cut them down? Or maybe you can offer some tips/suggestions?

How much can I grow in a 300sqm allotment?
I am new to growing my own and have decided to take on an allotment. The size of the large allotment is around 300sqm. The cost is £22 a month which sounds very cheap for the amount of land. How much could be grown on an allotment of this size and approximately how much would I save if I could grow all the fruit and veg needed for a year (if this is possible to do). I have never gardened or attempted to grow my own so not sure where to start. At the moment the allotment is just grass covered and needs a full clear out as it has not been used for over a year (private allotments run by the housing estate, not council).

A vast amount. You will have trouble getting it all into cultivation this year. I’d suggest you spray off the grass with glyphosate on half the area this year and borrow or rent a rotovator to get it turned over. Youll have lots of weed trouble this year but get opotatoes beans peas courgettes squash and so on in soon. Probably best to buy some of these as plants Potatoes beans and peas OK from seed. You also need to grow lettuce and rocket and herbs etc for salad. See if others can grow outside tomatoes where you are and ask neighbours for advice on what does well.

How can i tell if my Mushroom Spores are contaminated?
I am just starting to grow my own mushrooms and i need help knowing what to look for to determine if theyre contamiated. some of my cakes are different colors then the others. and i have to throw them out if theyre contaminated. How do you tell?

Umm mycylium (the “roots”) should only be white – off white. Any other colors in there should be considered contamination (ie mold) and the cakes should be removed. If there are splotches of furry looking dufferent colored shyt then definitely discard. If theres funky smells, discard. You can try to salvage but success of these salvaged cakes is little to none. When it comes to shrooms, dont f around cuz bad shrooms can make u rly sick.if u have a microscope than u can look at the substrate under the microscope for contamination… But when innoculating you must make sure everything is clean (rubber gloves, spray glade or other disinfecting spray constantly, vaccuum so no dust, and no airflow are just SOME precautions). Be careful and happy growing!

With all the controversy over how tobacco should be illegal, and weed should be legal, why don’t we compromise?
Why don’t we make them both illegal to mass produce, illegal to sell, but legal to grow on your own for personal consumption? If you want the drugs, you’ll need to work for it, but you’ll be able to have as much as you want.

Sure is me and my father inlaw have looked into it and planned on doing it it will taste better and not have all the crazy chemicals in it. Burley tobacco seeds are available from Gurney’s seed and nursery as well as others.
Easy to grow, smells good in the flower garden. In fact ornamental tobacco is a popular flower. As for the flavor, that might disappoint you. Your smokes are made from blends some of which are aged or cured in specific ways. Flavoring is also added, including vanilla chocolate and licorice so you might not like the taste of natural tobacco.

About last week they started attacking me for some reason. I don’t even know why, it may be because my brother killed one with a baseball bat. But then, why wouldn’t they vent their anger on him and not me? I offered them fudge cake as a peace offering but they wouldn’t accept it. We’re going to try again this year, and this year I think we’ll be using mostly pots. The fireants and the soil here is just too hard to deal with. I plan on tomatoes, some pumpkins, sweet-peas, squash, some carrots. Because I grew up with a veggie garden and loved it as a child, and it’s sort of a nudged thing in my religion in order to be more self-reliant. My kids will help, and in the past every time I’ve done this every child I’ve had help (from my own to nieces/nephews) ALWAYS ate more veggies because they helped grow them.

Yes i do,im in b.c. Canada and some farmers are selling seedlings
i havent yet perfected the art of curing it properly so it is quite a harsh smoke.you cant sell it and even i like to keep quiet about it.
But its a lot of work for little results,the one good thing is that it makes me smoke less…(if thats a good thing)
