Jenny asks…

can anyone suggest an alternative to saffron?

Saffron is scarce and therefore very expensive. Anything else that will also give a yellow colour and a mild flavour. I do not wish to use artificial colourings or flavourings. Turmeric is OK for some savoury recipes but totally unsuitable for sweet ones. I have heard of annato (used in the manufacture of custard), and also of calendula.I have even heard of the latter as ‘the poor man’s saffron’. It may not be expensive but neither is in available in supermarkets or independent stores. No replies from gardeners telling me to grow my own calendula, I am aware it is made from the petals of a type of marigold, easy to grow in southern Britain. I have health problems, live in an upstairs flat and have no garden (or the ability to care for one).

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you had a little plot of land, I’d suggest growing your own saffron. As you probably know, quite a bit of saffron used to be grown in Britain. There really is no substitute for saffron’s flavor. Though it is expensive, two redeeming qualities are that a little goes a long way and it lasts 7 to 10 years when properly stored. If you do decide to blow your food budget and buy a small packet, be sure to buy threads and not powder. That way you know you’re getting the real thing. On the internet you can often find saffron cheaper, but be sure to buy from a reputable dealer. I’ve seen “American” and “Mexican” saffron (ground up safflower petals–awful!) sold as real saffron from the crocus sativus.

Ken asks…

What causes cavitation on boats?

A former boss of mine just finished a five year project.
I quit at the beginning of this project because I was sure that failure was pretty likely.
Looks like I wasn’t wrong, even though everyone said I was. 🙂
Anyway, a 88′ Hatteras was extended to 100′ and had a complete retrofit done.
18 million dollars – not a typo.
It recently went in the water and they just did the first sea trial.
After 1 1/4 hours the props were so severely pitted that divers thought that they had many hundreds of hours of hard usage. They still don’t believe the props were brand new.
I heard that the cavitation was so severe that it was physically very uncomfortable to be on the boat when it was underway.
It actually hurt to be on the boat when it was moving.
He misplace the fwd deck drains so they actually shoot water all over the bow. It looks like a couple of garden hoses are just shooting up out of the deck.
Anyway, I googled ‘cavitation’ and I’m still not very clear on what could have pitted the props so badly or how such a self proclaimed ‘master’ could have made such catastrophic decisions.
Is the prevention of cavitation easy to plan for, or is it not that unusual?

FYI – If my former boss wasn’t such a liar, cheat and thief, I wouldn’t be advertising his disaster to the world with such glee!
A couple of his employees are here on Y!A quite often and I just want to remind those spineless, arrogant butt-kissers that ‘I TOLD YOU SO!”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That’s what you guys get for lying to the owner… destroyed reputations and very angry insurance people. Better hope they don’t ask me any questions… I’ll be honest!
I heard that they weren’t able to get it anywhere near the theoritical top speed.
I do know that the hull of the Hatteras was not uniform (which really showed in the extension) and I was involved with setting the new prop shaft tunnels in place. They were almost a foot out of parrallel. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
One prop was in line with the keel, and the other was pointing into the keel line almost a foot out of parrallel.
I didn’t like the decisions being made and decided to look for work elsewhere.
It just wasn’t looking right in numerous areas.

Revenge is a dish best served cold mate….

The deck drain thing just needs some nacelles grafted on – pretty straight forward.

Cavitation is the introduction of air adjacent to a foil or other body moving through water. It can come from the surface – or in this case from low pressure zones caused by the movement of the prop blades through the water. The water will boil, just like in a kettle if the pressure is reduced far enough. The continuous exploding of gas into the water against the surface of the prop is very powerful, and erosion is severe and fast. The props may be turning too fast for their design, they may have turbulence issues or any number of things going on. Prop design is seriously complicated stuff – even the best designers in the world will admit that they are working in a very grey area of physics that confound the best super-computers in the world. The fact is that the actual way subsurface propellers work is only partly known – there are forums out there with some of the best naval architects in the world debating incredible concepts and writing new software every month to try and get better performance and life from propellers. The calculations fall apart in most cases because you can’t go too big or too slow – the bigger you go and the slower you turn the better the prop, but this quickly runs out of reality if the software tells you a 200 meter blade is most efficient at 0.3 rpm!!

In practice a lot of work is needed to design the props for this modified boat. Tell me, the engines and rpm were increased right? The stuff that was working before would still work – these brand new props sound like they are unable to get the boat up to the new design speed, or are certainly exceeding tip speed limitations in this application, and are suffering from either not enough, or too much slip.

As you say – big big embarrassment and seriously torn up credibility.

There was a fashion here in the ’80’s to extend the local fishing boats in length and width anything up to 40% – now some of these are brilliant. There were a couple that absolutely didn’t – one very publicly lost it’s prop due to failure within 40 minutes of leaving on it’s maiden fishing trip after a 1.5 million dollar (1980’s dollars!) extension, refit and engine upgrade. It is to this day a complete dog. Last we heard it was flogged off to US speculators trying to rape the Solomon Islands fish stocks and gossip has it they went bust – no proof of that though, just skippers talking.

Thomas asks…

my dream is to be an actress & a singer?

my dream is to be an actress& a singer. I can play 4 instruments (guitar, piano, violin, and xylophone) I’ve been playing these since I was little. I also know how to act and have been in plays at my local theature. I also can sing really good I take singing lessons, I can sing high notes like Mariah Carey and low too!! I know how to dance as well. this is my dream and I have a real passion for this because I absolutely love it (: I just turned 17 and I know it’s not going to be easy to be an actress & a singer. Even though I would not be starting at 15 like Justin Bieber did but since I’m talented and I do have the drive not just to quit when it gets hard and everything and when I make do you think I could have the success Justin Bieber has even though I’d be starting out a few years older then he did when he started??? I also would love to sell out Madison Square Garden and somehow make a record like Justin bieber made a record by being the youngest person to sell out MSG. How would I make sure I have longevity in the business by not fading away because I was packing my career kinda like how the Jonas Brothers did (even though I love them) also would people think I’m too old to be starting out in the business to even reach really high popularity/ success??
no haterz please and don’t say “then why are you on yahoo”

GardenersCardiff answers:

At first Listen plan is every things for a future success. You can play 4 instrument. It’s great. It’s great. And u can act. It’s great but u should to show yours talent perfectly. Here’s a lot of ways to show yours talent first high school and then local area. And third online. But online is so week to make u famous or help u to touch the agents. So high school is a great place. But I think it will not be helpful cause here’s a lot of problem we know. But local are is a very important things for show yours talent and sometimes I also search singer from Local area and that’s best. But u should to know u are a exceptional u know it but others don’t know it.So all time try to show exceptional.U can do audition online in our channel means in disney. And first plan u should to touch a agent of hollywood industry.Second to be show yours best.

The first one is so tuff.Make some drama followed by any short script and upload it on youtube.Record some acoustic song on any devise and then post on myspace youtube, musiboo anywhere u can.

And don’t be sad to think u have a lot of talent but till not get any opportunity.Listen I’m only 14 so maybe u could think I’m a baby hahha lol.I can play atleast 10 instrument or more than it’s and I’m a music composer.Pray for me.Maybe next year here’s a chance to be start a show in disney and I will act at that. But I think I till not get the perfect opportunity. It’s easy but keep it up so hard.So try out yours best and don’t be feel u are late. It’s perfect age.

So best of luck.Carry on.If u think my answer is helpful please like the following page.I till not have any band but I wish to be onwer of a band with in two years.
