the sims 3 – gardenerscardiff.co.uk http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk For the Best Gardeners in the Cardiff Area Sun, 01 Feb 2015 20:05:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.0.21 Your Questions About Gardening http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-871/ http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-871/#respond Thu, 31 Jul 2014 14:05:03 +0000 http://gardenerscardiff.co.uk/your-questions-about-gardening-871/

Mary asks…

In the Sims 3 for xbox 360 how do you get your sims to make a garden?

i just started the game and my sim wants to garden but i cant figure out how to make one…i had her take the gardening class..what now?

GardenersCardiff answers:

McGregor’s garden has free harvestable fruits and veggies which will satisfy her want to garden.

If you want to make a garden at home, have her buy vegetables and fruits from the store or look around town for seeds. They’ll go into her inventory. On your home lot, open the build/buy mode by hitting the BACK button. Once you’re there, hit X to open the catalog and then go down to family inventory. Pick a plant or seed, place it on the lot, go back to Live mode by hitting BACK again, and click on the item. You’ll be able to plant it if she’s the right gardening level. If not, it will be grayed out and if you select it, it will tell you what level she has to be.

Nancy asks…

How do you create a GARDEN on Sims 3 for the XBOX?

I just bought Sims 3 for the xbox 360 and I’ve been trying to start a garden, but none of my seeds give me the option to plant. Also, I cannot find any kind of fertilizer or soil in build mode …

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hey, I’m having the same problem! I’ve been searching the internet for an answer but can’t find anything…

We just figured it out…

1.Read the gardening book in the library and get seeds.
2.Go to your house and go outside, stand in the yard.
3.Use the back button on your control to go to buy/build (our version is in Italian so I’m trying to translate as best I can =).
4.When in buy/build press X to open the catalog.
5.Then go to family inventory (I hope that’s what it’s called in the English version).
6.Then hit RB to go to the Sims Articles.
7.You can select the seeds and use them from there.

Hope that helped! =)

Oh yeah, and you buy fish from the store and use them as fertilizer… You can also buy fruit and vegetables from the store and plant them.

Robert asks…

How would I go about, selling statues to garden centres?

I have a few latex moulds, cement, vibrating table and I can make large statues. But selling on the internet doesn;t seem to be enough. Can someone help me, How do I go about selling items to garden centres? Who do I call? Whats to arrange? How much percentage will I get if a statue is worth £100 in the shop?

Im not good with business, but thank you

GardenersCardiff answers:

Two things to think about: Firstly, most retail stores will mark up an item at least double what they paid for it-that means if it would normally sale 100, they won’t buy it for more than 50 (more often it would be closer to 40). Secondly, rather than going to the nurseries and garden centers, try selling your work to vendors and distributors. You might make less money, but you will typically get more sales.

In any event, it always helps to put together a catalogue of your work, a portfolio if you will. It is much easier to transport and can offer a GC or nursery the chance to easily think about what they might want. As you intend to make a business out of this, don’t stop coming up with new ideas. Tastes change and markets grow in odd directions sometimes… Including statuary! The other bonus to having a catalogue comes from being able to update the pictures and offer a starting point for a conversation. If you want to sell your work, you first need to sell yourself on the customer. Keep in mind that the more you pay attention to what they say their customers are looking for, the easier it will be to come up with new ideas.

Nancy asks…

What brand of potting soil should I use for vegetables?

What brand of potting soil should I use for my container garden in So Cal? I understand that the different vegetables will require different fertilizers but what is a good and preferably inexpensive basic soil to use? Any other container gardening tips are also welcome. Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

The brand of potting soil don’t make any difference , most potting soil has a lot of compost mixed in it as well. I have been gardening for more than thirty years now , Names and Brands have changed and continue to change, You still need to fertilize your plants and your garden to produce healthy plants and a productive vegetable garden. Just buy what is on sale , if you buy a brand name your only paying the extra price for the name alone and the name is not what makes your garden green.

William asks…

Good way to keep cats out of the garden?

What can you do to keep cats from using the garden for a litter box…ugghhh Also looking for the best place to order organic seeds? any other garden tips are great!!!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Just sprinkle mothballs around your garden. Cats hate them. And you can google organic seeds. There are companies that specialize in them.

Steven asks…

How do I make easy money with The Sims 3 Ambitions on my iPod Touch?

I tried shaking my iPod when I was in the gardening tips, but it didn’t work. I saw on other websites about the Walter thing and I haven’t tried it yet. I’m not really even big on the job thing on this game so I want free money you know 🙂 Anyways PLEASE HELP.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think just to get a job.
Sometimes therw will be those little questions that pop and ask you if you want to steal. Or report people stealing and stuff ike that. You get 1000 dollars at the least for those. Well if you choose wisely. Or you get fired. Thats how I got my money.

George asks…

How should I separate my small garden from my grass?

No experience with gardening!! I just bought a house with a small (4′ x 3′) garden in the backyard. Right now the garden is empty but I hope to get some flowers & bushes in soon. Do I need to separate the garden from the surrounding grass with some sort of barrier so they don’t grow into each other? Or will the roots of the plants keep each other from overgrowing? Secondly, I am looking for a hardy ground-covering type plant that grows with minimal care and perhaps has some nice flowers. Any suggestions?

GardenersCardiff answers:

If it was me I’d want to put in a barrier to prevent the grass from constantly encroaching on the garden. The ditch and landscape timbers can work, but more effective barriers would be:

1) tear off the sod around the garden spot (about a foot width) and a little deeper than just the sod. Then line with plastic (heavy duty plastic garbage bags work just fine, make sure to do a good job of overlapping the plastic. Then fill with rock…I find that works really well for many years

2) find a good edging… Find something that will go down into the ground about 8inches. Don’t get the 4″ stuff…it’s just not enough. Find any kind of edging or material that will let you put a wall down into the ground about 8″ and that should prevent things from going into your garden.

As another poster said, 4′ x 3′ is a very small garden…you will not be able to do much with it. Most plants get big fast! 🙂

Have fun!

Jenny asks…

How do I grow lettuce in my garden? Are there lettuce seeds?

I know absolutely nothing about gardening, but since the weather’s so nice, I would like to take this opportunity to grow some things.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi there,

Well I hope it was lettuce seeds that I planted yesterday! Yes you can get all types of lettuce seeds from garden centres, supermarkets, on line etc. Rake the ground so that the soil is very fine, water it well and then sprinkle the seed on top. Cover with a little more soil and in no time at all, you will have homegrown lettuce. Personally I do them in tubs, pots and trays and prefer to use compost instead of soil. Keep them well watered other wise they will run to seed quite quickly.

Hope this helps, good luck and happy gardening 🙂

Donald asks…

How do you do Gardening in the Sims 3?

Hey, I have the Sims 3 and I really wanted to do some gardening in the Sims 3, but I don’t know how. I don’t want to go to the science lab all the time as I would like to do it in my own garden, but I don’t know how to plant seeds or garden at all. Do I need to buy seeds or something, then plant it in the garden? Please help me, I’m really stuck.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Gardening is a very useful skill to master in Sims 3. Not only will you make quality produce leading to quality meals leading to higher mood buffs but you can also sell your produce and turn into a pro-gardener, making heaps of money with high-quality produce.

You cannot buy seeds, you can only find them across the town, sometimes in community lots and sometimes in the wilderness. They are very small and inconspicuous, but the Collector Helper (a lifetime reward) can screen them on your map and collecting them becomes a cakewalk. You should only find seeds of special quality like this, as they cannot be purchased anywhere. These include the Death Flower, the Life Fruit, Flame Fruit and the Money Tree. As for normal produce like: Lime, Apples, Lettuce, Tomatoes and so on, you don’t necessarily need pure seeds. You can just use the harvestables themselves, and plant them.
Harvestables are graded in several levels and your gardening skills need to be on par with those levels to plant certain veggies or fruits. If your sim has no skill at gardening whatsoever they can plant common harvestables: Apple Tree, Grapes, Lettuce and Tommato. To do this, buy any of these from the Groccery store and head home. You can only plant on your own lot. Open the inventory and click on the veggies and select plant. Choose your spot on the terrain and plant away.
To improve your Gardening Skill, buy a book about gardening, tune in to the Gardening TV channel or just garden. At level 5 of this skill you can start planting uncommon harvestables (i’ll let you find out which they are as you play) and at level 7 you start planting the special harvies. Thru a series of 3 opportunities, the chefs at the diner and bistro will give you the possibility to plant eggs, steaks, cheese and patties. Imagine that. But the phone for those opportunities will ring only when you’ve reached level 7 Gardening.

Additional info:

Fertilizing is an option you’ll have with a plant once you’ve reached level 3 gardening. This expedites the plants growth depending on what you use as a fertilizer. Life Fruits, Angelfish, Vampire Fish, Sharks, Lobsters and Garlic are the best as these have the greatest effect over the longest time. Other produce and fish can also be used for less effective results.

Having the Super-Green Thumb lifetime reward is a great asset for gardening. The plant you plant, will be one level better than the seed used to plant it. This means that you can start with a Nice Quality (2) harvy, plant it, make the plant of Very Nice Quality (3), and with good care it’s produce will be Great Quality (4). Then plant that produce and have an Excellent Quality (5) plant that will yield Outstanding Quality (6) harvies. Takes time, but the better the quality, the better the meal made with them tastes and the higher their price for sale.

That about rounds up the basics in gardening.

Mark asks…

What is the difference between the sims 2 and the sims 3?

I know the sims 3 is a lot better, but what else is different about it? Is there going to be a sims 3 pets or something like that?

GardenersCardiff answers:

When you make the people, you can choose muscle size, or no muscle, or how fat or skinny and the people can get much bigger on sims 3.
Designing the faces and such is easier with simpler choices but the option of have the bars come up again to choose it more precisely.
With clothes, they have it organized in shirts for example by design. Maybe T-shirts on top but they have the same shirt in many pre-made colors. Many options. Also, the option to pick your own color and to pick out designs and such.
Personality is more specific. You pick traits such as friendly, evil, loves outdoors, hates flirting, flirty, great kisser, insane, artistic, athletic, genius, charismatic, funny, family-oriented, neat, and many many more.
If you have a child in the game you pick out two traits at birth and one after each birthday if they have good grades and grew up well. If they didn’t the game picks for you. But there are cheats to change it to what you want.
Also, the traits affect how your sims acts and what goals they have. Say if your sim is neat, you can click on any spot in the house and along with the “go there” option there is a “clean house” option and after you clean the house that sim always wants to take a bath.
When you click on people there is a new option that shows up , “Special…” and if say your flirty, flirty will be an option and then more options such as give a great massage or something will be available no matter how close your sim is with that person.
The game has more town things. Library, book store, grocery store, theatre, office buildings for certain careers, town hall, restaurants, multiple parks, and more. In sims 3 you can get in a car you own and watch yourself drive to the town instead of the car driving off into no where and waiting for the next page to load in sims 2.
But my least favorite thing about sims 3 is that you can’t see inside the towns buildings, only inside the gym. Your sim just walks inside and you see a picture of their head in a circle above it and that’s it. If you try to look inside the building disappears.
There are many new furniture options and some things are gone such as hot tubs, pianos, and other things I haven’t noticed yet. But they can get guitar now.
A big difference is jobs. Many more job opportunity’s. If you work at the theatre, than you play guitar and can become a pop star. When you go to work, you get different options, such as work hard, slack off, meet coworkers, meet band members, meet medical staff, hold meeting, watch tv, talk around water fountain, suck up to boss, and more. Depending on what job you have you will have different options. And what you choose affects your job performance and promotions.
Also, with skills you don’t have the cleaning one anymore but you still have logic, mechanic, painting, guitar, charisma, cooking, fishing, gardening, and more. But unlike sims 2 you don’t go to skills and see a list of the ones available. When you go to skills you only see the ones you have gotten. So if your sims has only played chess, when you go to skills all you see is logic.
Sims 3 is all around better than any sims before it. But its so different you can’t name everything. But that is the jist of it.

I had the sims 2 and now I have the sims 3.

Laura asks…

What sides do you eat with pork ribs?

Hi good morning yahoo users, i was just wondering what type of side do you eat with pork ribs? Also what is a good seasoning and sauce to put on my ribs? Please do not recommend any cumin in the seasoning or alcohol/BBQ in the sauce. I would appreciate any answers thank you for your time.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Rice is always a great side with pork ribs! If you make your own, I would season it a bit with some butter or margarine, salt and pepper, garlic, soya sauce, and maybe a bit of plum sauce. Or, make a box of Rice-aroni, or a box of Uncle Ben’s rice (they have a lot of different kinds of pre-seasoned rice: it also comes in easy peasy microwavable pouches so that no boiling of water is needed.

Or, you could do potatoes, as they are super with pork ribs also. Mashed, boiled, baked, etc. Add some seasonings to them (your favorites), and maybe some grated cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, parmesean, etc.) over top of them when they are still warm so that it melts a little. Yum. 🙂

And a salad is always a nice additional side for something like pork-ribs … I’d go with something not too complicated like a basic garden salad or a coleslaw (store-bought or homemade, either would do). A salad is always something tasty, and you’ll get your vegetables that way also.

As for a sauce for the ribs: I’d make a basic sweet and sour sauce by stirring together some ketchup, soya sauce, a bit of oil (olive would be tastiest), some brown or white sugar, a bit of lemon or lime juice, garlic (fresh garlic is best for flavor, just mince it up), some finely diced onion (green onion would work as well) salt, pepper, and then some herbs or spices like: oregano or basil, cinnamon or nutmeg, mustard seed or rosemary, etc. For a little kick of heat, add a few drops of tabasco sauce, or Frank Red Hot sauce. You can get very creative with a sauce, and they are fun to make — just keep tasting as you go, and if you can, let the batch of sauce you make chill out in the fridge for at least an hour afterwards; the flavors will do what’s called ‘marry’ and the sauce will taste even better than it did beforehand. And, if you’ve made enough sauce to cook the ribs IN some of it, try it out. Your ribs will take on a lot of the flavor of the sauce, and it will help them to stay moist and ‘finger-licking good’.

Good luck, and enjoy the meal! Now I’M craving ribs. Lol. 😉

Steven asks…

What are the best investments when it comes to outdoor play toddler toys?

What are the things you have gotten for your toddlers for outdoors that they played with and lasted the longest?

BQ: At what age do you think a toddler would enjoy sidewalk chalk? I know they usually say ages 3+ on them and I also know that at 17 months Ari is probably too young to play with it safely (aka not try to eat it) but 3 seems a tad old.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Nth swing set — _loads_ of use out of ours

I nearly bought one of the wooden jobbies but went with a $200 metal one; very relieved about that. The wooden ones sold all over the place at Walmarts etc are (1) more than $200 (2) poor quality — the wood is very thin, they’re nothing at all like the playground-grade, thousands-of-dollars sets made with nice sturdy lumber. You want something that will last a good number of winters. The metal job is over a year old now and still looks new, and $200 was a “six station” thing with a glider, rings, regular swings and a baby swing, and a slide. We are a popular stop for all the tots on the block…

Second place is the sandbox. Also: a tot-friendly garden. Cucumbers, berries, easy-to-grow stuff they can graze on.

Go ahead with the sidewalk chalk; it’s totally non-toxic.

Ken asks…

How do I get my gardening skill up on The Sims 3?

So, the my career on The Sims 3, I need to improve my gardening skill for it. How do I improve it?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Easiest way without any sweat is to switch on the tv to the gardening channel. Apart from that you can take classes, get a garden and tend to the plants, read book.

Lisa asks…

What “product” would you like/expect to receive from a gardening consultant?

I would like to take jobs as a gardening or landscaping consultant, working with homeowners as clients. I do not want to take measurements/draw landscape plans. That takes too much time outside of the meeting/appointment. I feel many people just want to pick my brain and ask questions anyway. But I feel I need to leave them with something, written notes, a list of plants, etc. I want them to feel they got their money’s worth. What would comprise a good product? I’d like to make up a form or sheet to use.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Garden Consultant eh?

I’ve done it before… But you’d better be well versed in all manner of garden products. What I’ve done is offered a ‘garden calendar’. All the things you recommend doing, you compile as a ‘to do’ list, at the appropriate times. Home owners are smart, but unless they know when to do it, they might not get the results they should. So if you suggest a water soluble fertilizer every other week, note it on their calendar. When should they trim their Forsythia? Note that too… Sort of instruction manual for their garden. Offer it at a small charge (print calendar pages on your computer), otherwise let them take their own notes.

I wouldn’t expect to have a whole lot of customers, but if you target younger home owners, without a lot of experience- you might do okay.

Good luck-

Sandra asks…

Should I wait for flower gardening or can I start now?

I live in TN. So, far we have had about 2 weeks of warm weather (60s & 70s) before spring even set in. Last year, our winter ended right around this time also unlike past decade where cold weather ( < 60F) would last through April. So, should I wait a little longer or can I go ahead and start my flower gardening now?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Rather than relying on daytime high temperatures, you should check out nighttime lows to see if there has been frost recently, and if you expect frost to continue.

Meanwhile, you can prepare the soil, by putting a fresh layer of topsoil on it, and raking it in to the existing soil. If you believe in fertilizer, you could mix that in, too.

Some flowers are very hardy in cold weather, pansies, for example.

*read* what do you think of my poem type thing *warning its about suicide*?

THIS IS MY PROPERTY!!!! (C) Eleisha 2009. (it was made in 2009)

Fact:1 Suicide Happens Every 40 seconds
Suicide
Seems like a easy way out,
telling everyone you quit,
couldnt deal with it anymore,
I understand,
I thought of doing it a few times,
maybe i could,
maybe deep down,
I wouldnt,
but lifes so short already,
why dont you try to find the good in the short time?,
hey, its hard, i know,
shoot yourself,
hang yourself,
put the razor to you skin and put a deep short gash,
when your on your last breathe you may even realise,
life is ment to be hard,it isnt ment to be fair,
people putting you down,
judging you,
talking about you,
saying and doing the cruelest things,
why are they so mean?,
we all are gods children,
its your choice,
you will be in gods care early in his garden with your lost loved pets and people,
im not going to judge. but before you do it, please think of what you could be doing in the future partying, having fun and what your leaving behind, crying people.
Maybe the reason you do suicide is because you dont love anyone or no one loves you,
theres nothing exciting in life.
But Hey. Thats Suicide

what do you think??
i dont think its a poem haha.

so yer be a critic but not a hater theres a FINE line between those things.

Sims 3- Do I need to micro-manage?

I made a large family in the Sims 3 to shake things up from my easy 3-4 person families. The family I’m working on has one elder, two adults, a teenager, and a child. This may not sound too hard but only one of the adults works and the budget it very tight. Also, I’m driving myself crazy trying to micro manage every sim to his/her highest level of productivity. Realistically, this isn’t possible. My teenager can’t go to school, come home, do homework, work on skills, cook diner, work in the garden, and be best friends with all of her family members at the same time. So my question is this: what would happen if I let them somewhat fend for themselves? Let them decide when they need to eat or go to the bathroom or even when they need to go to school. Will they be failures at life if I don’t make them nearly master at least one skill before they move out or all the children are A+ students? What things will and won’t they do on their own? I really need help on this because being a control freak over small things like the bladder levels of all 5 people in the house is driving me crazy! Help!

Thomas asks…

I want to know about some basic books related to gardening, Can anyone help me?

My hobby is gardening but my knowledge about gardening is very poor. I want to enhance my knowledge regarding it.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Your local nurseries should have a supply of books about your local conditions. The price will be a bit high, comparatively, but theirs no substitute for exacting advice about your own garden conditions. And they usually have sections explaining the basics along with them. I can’t say I have any generalized favorite books. Too many plants in those books that won’t work for my conditions. It’s disheartening. Although, I do like some of the stylistic ideas in Beautiful Gardens Made Easy by Miracle Gro. And if you like Cacti at all, Terry Hewitt wrote an awesome one called Cacti and Succulents.

Where can you obtain gardening supplies in the Sims 3?

I know that in the Sims 2, you could just purchase plants and all that good stuff in the Buy section. I can’t seem to find the plants or seeds in the Sims 3. Do I have to purchase them at a special store or something? Thank you! 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

You can go to the grocery store and buy fruit and then when its in your inventory you will have the option to plant it. Also, you can take a gardening class a the science lab and it will give you seeds for some different plants.

Hope this helped! 🙂

Gardeners – Have You Ever Bought Gardening Supplies Online?

I’m looking into opening an online gardening store…
Have you, or any other gardeners you know, bought any of your supplies online? What type of supplies are you likely to buy online and what would you rather just go to the local store for?
Thanks for your help! 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

I’ve bought online on Ebay. Seedling heat mats, seed trays, rooting hormones, plant markers, etc. You need to compare what’s out there–and price your products competitively. My daughter sells on Ebay and does quite well (not gardening supplies).
