Richard asks…

What, if anything, can I plant in a vegetable garden in Zone 7a in late June/early July?

I live in zone 7a and have some additional space in my vegetable garden. Is it too late to plant anything? Also, when answering please indicate if you are referring to seeds or seedlings. I am quite confused by the information online.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Seeds all…
Green beans – sow every two weeks until mid-August 55 days to maturity.
Sow broccoli / cabbage / cauliflower / romaine in early July. Harvest late September.
Sow short-season tomatoes. Harvest mid-September.
Still time for 70-day corn….okra…and zuchinni.
Sow snow peas early August. Harvest mid-October.
Sow spinach mid-September. Harvest late October.

Robert asks…

Is there a complete list of all of yahoo’s groups to look at?

I don’t just want heading and general areas. I would like to find all the specific groups that have to do with growing, gardening, hydoponics, zones, soil, light,….. That is why i was wanting to find a list of every single group. Or how would you suggest i find these things?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Be sure to click on the micromanage button on the side….no the other side…..down..down…there click on that on there…now

Charles asks…

What is a low-maintenance vine for a flower box above my garage?

The box gets direct morning sun. I want something to grow onto the side of the house, but not get too crazy. I live in gardening zone 7. Flowering would be nice, but not a necessity.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Cross Vine is the best choice for Zone 7. It is native, mostly evergreen, and blooms in May with yellow or orange flowers. In the fall the leaves change to burgundy but only the oldest leaves fall off. It attaches itself to rough surfaces like brick, stucco or rough sawn wood with tiny tendrils that do not hurt the wall or masonry and are easily removed. Other vines either have to be attached artificially by you, or they grow their own holdfasts or rootlets so strong that they are extremely difficult to remove. Their holdfasts may also ruin the wall surfaces. There is no other vine for Zone 7 that does so well., and will not hurt your wall.
As for your desire for something “not too crazy” that is up to you. Any vine should be hard pruned back every year or two to keep it from looking unkept. Cross Vine should be cut back to about 2 inches above soil level (yes I said 2 inches) every year, immediately following after the blooms fall off. It will grow back very quickly, looking fresh and lovely again in no time.

William asks…

What are some easy American gifts I can send home?

Christmas is coming and I want to send a small box of goodies to my friends and family back home in New Zealand. I’m going to put in some candy which isn’t available in NZ, but I need some more ideas for things which would be perceived as very ‘American’. Any help would be appreciated!

GardenersCardiff answers:

A jigsaw puzzle the family can put together of a beautiful scenery of a place in America.

Anything with American flags on it.

Statue of Liberty souvenirs.

Pictures of you in different places in America (even if its around town) put in frames.

Figurines of the Bald Eagle or Military commemorative.

A small bag of Miracle Grow, a small hand shovel for gardening, and the state flower for wherever. I don’t know if America has a national flower?? So I would just do state. For Texas its the Bluebonnet.

Donations made in their name. You can get a small certificate or something for the donation and send it to them letting them know they helped feed children, or helped some woodland area.

A photo arrangement of different things you see that makes you think of them. If you have a mother who loves to cook, taking a picture of a restaurant that sells some NZ favorites would remind you of her. A friend that loves to make jokes could be represented by a picture of a local gag and joke magic store.

Shot glasses with something American on it. A famous quote or funny picture.

Land of the Free, Home of the Brave commemorative.

A Republican and Democratic Elephant and Donkey.

Shells from the beach.

Preserved butterflies in a frame.

Betty asks…

What do you think of your household consumption of food nowadays compared to the younger days……?

getting more complexs….healthier….more processed food….simple, easy on the ‘go food’……lots of eating out/take outs food….homecooked…..what has cause the change and is it for better/

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think we eat more fast food, processed and micrwaved. When my children were little I made breakfast before I went to work, packed lunch and I cooked every night. A square meal. Meat starch, veggie and bread. Now they are grow and gone and a sandwhich or salad or burger do. I used to have a garden and had lots of fresh veggies and a freezer for frozen fresh fruits and veggies but all thats gone now and it seems at a time when I should pay better attention to health issues I don’t take the time because the kids are gone and it’s just me. So I say it’s not as healthy or balanced.

George asks…

question about filling in cracks between wall panels?

i have made a garden shed into a studio…but i used drop ceiling for the walls…3 tiles vertically (i had some extra on hand)…..shed was on 24 in. centers…front was on 20in centers….i know stupid built

ANYWAY

easy to say i have some 1/4 in. to 2in. gaps between some sections….what would you guys use to seal the cracks? caulk? any better ideas?

GardenersCardiff answers:

=== at the rate of 1/4 to 2inch gaping cracks in your walls — I want to suggest that you use some wood strips to apply to those crack/gaps and close the walls == there is no caulk that will fix this problem === if the “”strips”” will work for you by nailing them to those gaps that meet at your wall studs then you will just have to find the floor to wall top height and the strips that will fit and you can piece those strips in the 1/4 gaps and use full strips on the 2inch gaps … Caulk will fill the small gaps but it will cost more for that than just doing the wooden strips and done also if you have gaps between the wall boards that are not secure to the wall studs then you need to get some help and apply those gap closure strips with screws and a strip on both sides of the wall === out in the open you need to use enamel paint to help protect any wooden parts from the rain and weather ,,……….

Joseph asks…

How is this in violation of yahoo’s guidelines?

I answered a question. The question was a single mum who’s kid had just moved out. I said…

“Firstly, don’t trust those online things. Most of them are scams, and they aren’t reliable. You need to get your resume updated. There are usually ads in the newspaper for resume writers. Take some courses to make yourself more “employable”, such as bookkeeping, etc. My aunt, who has previously been a stay at home mum, has got a reception job by taking a few courses and looking. Think about your career dreams and what you really want to do. Write lists, think about what you want in a job. You could apply to be a front office receptionist at a fancy hotel, or a cleaning job. You could apply to a supermarket or other retail store, or factory. If you want to stay at home and work from home, or own your own business, to make the transition process to work then here are some options: -You could try telemarketing. You could do that from home. Call up telstra, optus, 3, and various companies, or look on their websites to see if they are currently hiring. -You could also start your own business making cakes, growing flowers and selling them, breeding dogs, making greeting cards, making soup, selling hand-sewn clothes, etc. and sell through a website, outside a store, through friends, etc. -You could also try taxi driving. Depending on your country, you may need a special licence or may not be old enough, but you could always try once you are eligible. My cousin used to drive taxis. A good place to pick up customers is in the city, at airports, hotels, restaurants, train stations and places like that. -If you are interested in skincare/makeup and/or cleaning produces and/or vitamins and health supplements then I suggest you try selling through pro-ma. Pro-ma works through independent distributors, and you get a competitive sales percentage. Unlike tupperware, your percentage increases the more you sell, and they have free training courses and books that you can buy. Here is their website: http://www.pro-masystems.com.au/ This is the income plan: http://www.pro-masystems.com.au/ You can also ask for help from an existing distributor. -If you have some money saved up, you could own a franchise such as dunkin’ donuts, subway, wendy’s, mcdonalds, gloria jeans, krispy kreme, etc. However, you may be required to work long hours and would most likely need to be on your feet a lot of the time. -You could also be a freelance artist, website designer, writer, etc. You get to make your own hours, and you can work from home. -You could also get into blogging. I know someone who gets their income by making blogs on various topics such as gardening, legal, makeup, cooking, computers, etc. You can buy articles, and you get paid to have advertisements. Or you can save money and write your own articles. -You could also try doing odd jobs such as moving, cleaning, etc for your neighbours. Or, you could do dog walking. Make fliers and send them all over the neighbourhood. The great thing about dog walking is that you get excercise and fresh air, you can work at your own hours, and you get to spend time with animals. You could try and be a house sitter, a sports coach, or volunteer if you can’t get a job. The great thing about volunteering is that it’s easy to get work, and although you don’t get paid, its something great that you can put on your resume. I hope that you find something. Keep looking, and consider being a sales rep for a pro-ma. I think it would be a good, flexible option, plus you could win an overseas holiday! Keep looking :)”
I did appeal, and it didn’t work.

GardenersCardiff answers:

This is NOT in violation of the Answers community. I suggest that you appeal the violation. A lot of the times, questions/answers are wrongfully reported, and you can receive your points back if it was. Appeal to the violation and see what happens. Good luck, and sorry this happened to you.

Sharon asks…

clear picture frames/ paint walls..help please!?

Okay, so I’m doing kind of an art project on my wall, its like a bunch of silhouettes on the wall, each in picture frames. It’s a bit hard to explain, so here’s a picture;
http://readymadeblogs.mydevstaging.com/blogs/home-and-garden/files/2010/02/Picture-2.png
(It’s just google>images>New York wall art DIY>second row, second column)
Alright, so as you can see the silhouettes are on the wall, and it looks like the frame was just put there to capture them, that’s the effect I want. I do not want to paint the silhouette on the wall, so I was wondering if I could use a clear picture frame, just like two pieces of glass that you put it in, and then, of course, put the other frame around it.
I was planning on cutting out the figures, but I know paper won’t last. My walls are blue, so I can’t just put it on white paper.
If you have any ideas as to how I can do this without painting on the walls, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help, if you helped.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You can paint on the glass or take a photo of something black and cut your siloutte out from that.

John asks…

How can obama party as America burns?

http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2011/08/obamas_rose_garden_50th_birthd_1.html

GardenersCardiff answers:

After a wearying four birthday parties – two in Chicago Wednesday night where money changed hands and two at the White House on his actual birthday, Thursday, President Obama Friday afternoon choppered out to Camp David with the family.

He’ll be back Sunday, possibly in time to golf.
