Quotes from to kill a mocking bird ABOUT Atticus Finch?

Can anyone find any good quotes which show the varying views on Atticus Finch from to kill a Mocking bird. On the internet I can only find quotes said by Atticus. Thanks! 🙂

GardenersCardiff answers:

There are many quotes in the novel which “show the varying views on Atticus Finch.” Below are just a few that are worthy of your use.

CHAPTER 5:
_(Miss Maudie in a conversation with Scout) “Gracious child, I was raveling a thread, wasn’t even thinking about your father, but now that I am I’ll say this: Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets.”
CHAPTER 10:
_(Miss Maudie explaining to Scout why Atticus feels strongly about not shooting mockingbirds) “Your father’s right … Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

_(Miss Maudie telling Jem and Scout about the ability that Atticus has to shoot well) “Well now, Miss Jean Louise … Still think your father can’t do anything? Still ashamed of him? … Forgot to tell you the other day that besides playing the Jew’s Harp, Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time. … The very idea, didn’t you know his nickname was Ol‘ One-Shot when he was a boy? Why, down at the Landing when he was coming up, if he shot fifteen times and hit fourteen doves he’d complain about wasting ammunition.”

CHAPTER 11:
_(Mrs. Dubose insults Atticus as Scout and Jem pass her on the porch of her house): “Yes indeed, what has this world come to when a Finch [Atticus] goes against his raising? I’ll tell you! … Your father’s no better than the ni_ gers and trash he works for!”

CHAPTER 20:
_(Mr. Dolphus Raymond, during a conversation with Scout and Dill when Dill was upset about Mr. Kilmer’s trial tactics, gives his positive view of Atticus): “Miss Jean Louise, you don’t know your pa’s not a run-of-the-mill man, it’ll take a few years for that to sink in—you haven’t seen enough of the world yet. You haven’t even seen this town, but all you gotta do is step back inside the courthouse.”

CHAPTER 21:
_(Reverend Sykes expresses his view of Atticus after Atticus has heard the jury’s verdict against Tom Robinson and is leaving the court) “Miss Jean Louise? (Scout as narrator: “I looked around. They were standing. All around us and in the balcony on the opposite wall, the Ne_ groes were getting to their feet….”) … Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father’s passin’.”

CHAPTER 23:
_(Miss Stephanie Crawford, through Scout as narrator, describes an incident which makes clear Bob Ewell’s view of Atticus): “According to Miss Stephanie Crawford, however, Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him. Miss Stephanie (who, by the time she had told it twice was there and had seen it all—passing by from the Jitney Jungle, she was)—Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr. Ewell call him names wild horses could not bring her to repeat. Mr. Ewell was a veteran of an obscure war; that plus Atticus’s peaceful reaction probably prompted him to inquire, ‘Too proud to fight, you ni_ ger-lovin‘ ba_s_tard?’ Miss Stephanie said Atticus said, ‘No, too old,’ put his hands in his pockets and strolled on. Miss Stephanie said you had to hand it to Atticus Finch, he could be right dry sometimes.”

CHAPTER 24:
_(Miss Maudie offers a view of Atticus to Aunt Alexandra when Alexandra learns of Tom’s death and expresses her concern about the way Maycomb has treated Atticus) “Have you ever thought of it this way, Alexandra? Whether Maycomb knows it or not, we’re paying the highest tribute we can pay a man [Atticus]. We trust him to do right. It’s that simple … The handful of people in this town who say that fair play is not marked W_hite Only; the handful of people who say a fair trial is for everybody, not just us; the handful of people with enough humility to think, when they look at a Ne_ gro, there but for the Lord’s kindness am l.”

“I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks.”

Donna asks…

Quotes from To Kill a Mockingbird WITH page numbers?

I need 2 quotes, one where Scout tells Atticus she is being teased for the case, and the other is when Atticus explains why he needs to take the case. Please supply page numbers! I don’t care about the edition.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The edition of the book in my library is the Warner Books paperback edition published in 1988. It is to that edition that I shall be referring.

NOTES: Regarding QUOTE 1, there are a number of places in the novel when Scout listens to abuse because Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. I have selected the instance closest in time to the explanation Atticus provides in QUOTE 2a below. Regarding all of the QUOTES below, I have included exchanges so that the context is clearer. If you wish, you may simply use the text you prefer.

___QUOTE 1: CHAPTER 9, p.77 (first pages of Chapter 9) — Cecil Jacobs teases Scout about her father’s defending ni_ gers. Scout asks Attucus about what Cecil Jabobs meant.

__[Scout as narrator] “…My fists were clenched and I was ready to let fly. Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more; I was far too old and too big for such childish things, and the sooner I learned to hold in, the better off everybody would be. I soon forgot. Cecil Jacobs made me forget. He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch’s daddy defended ni_ gers. I denied it, but told Jem…”
__[Scout] “Do you defend ni_ gers, Atticus?…”
__[Atticus] “Of course I do. Don’t say ni_ ger, Scout. That’s common.”
__[Scout] “‘s what everybody at school says….Do all lawyers defend n-Ne_ groes, Atticus?”
__[Atticus] “Of course they do, Scout.”
__[Scout] “Then why did Cecil say you defended ni_ gers? He made it sound like you were runnin‘ a still.”

____QUOTE 2a: CHAPTER 9, pp. 77-78 (first pages of Chapter 9 and immediately after Scout’s question in QUOTE 1 above) — Atticus is speaking to Scout.

__[Atticus] “…I’m simply defending a N_ gro—his name’s Tom Robinson. He lives in that little settlement beyond the town dump. He’s a member of Calpurnia’s church, and Cal knows his family well. She says they’re clean-living folks. Scout, you aren’t old enough to understand some things yet, but there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man. It’s a peculiar case—it won’t come to trial until summer session. John Taylor was kind enough to give us a postponement…”
__[Scout] “If you shouldn’t be defendin‘ him, then why are you doin’ it?”
__[Atticus] “For a number of reasons…The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.”
__[Scout] “You mean if you didn’t defend that man, Jem and me wouldn’t have to mind you any more?….Why?”
__[Atticus] “Because I could never ask you to mind me again. Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess. You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.”

____QUOTE 2b: CHAPTER 11, p. 108 (within the first 10 pages of Chapter 11) — Mrs. Dubose has insulted Atticus for defending ni_ gers; and Jem becomes so angry that he tears up her garden. When Atticus comes home, he tells Jem to return to Mrs. Dubose’s. Scout asks Atticus about his defending Tom Robinson and Atticus replies.

__[Atticus] “Scout…when summer comes you’ll have to keep your head about far worse things… it’s not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down—well, all I can say is, when you and Jem are grown, maybe you’ll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn’t let you down. This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience—Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help that man.”
__[Scout] “Atticus, you must be wrong…most folks seem to think they’re right and you’re wrong…”
__[Atticus] “They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions…but before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with my with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”

Good luck!

Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.
Pt. 1, ch. 2
Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view–until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
Pt. 1, ch. 3
Atticus Finch
As I inched sluggishly along the treadmill of the Maycomb County school system, I could not help receiving the impression that I was being cheated out of something. Out of what I knew not, yet I did not believe that twelve years of unrelieved boredom was exactly what the state had in mind for me.
Pt. 1, ch. 3
Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
And it’s certainly bad, but when a man spends his relief checks on green whiskey his children have a way of crying from hunger pains. I don’t know of any landowner around here who begrudges those children any game their father can hit. Of course he shouldn’t, but he’ll never change his ways. Are you going to take out your disapproval on his children?
Pt. 1, ch.3
Atticus Finch
The sixth grade seemed to please him from the beginning: he went through a brief Egyptian Period that baffled me – he tried to walk flat a great deal, sticking one arm in front of him and one in back of him, putting one foot behind the other. He declared Egyptians walked that way; I said if they did I didn’t see how they got anything done, but Jem said they accomplished more than the Americans ever did, they invented toilet paper and perpetual embalming, and asked where would we be today if they hadn’t? Atticus told me to delete the adjectives and I’d have the facts.
Pt. 1, ch. 7
Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness’ sake. But don’t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles ’em.
Pt. 1, ch. 9
Atticus Finch
Bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn they’re not attracting attention with it, hotheadedness isn’t.
Pt. 1, ch. 9
Atticus Finch
Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand.
Pt. 1, ch. 9
Atticus Finch
I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird…. Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Atticus Finch & Miss Maudie
People in their right minds never take pride in their talents.
Pt. 1, ch. 10
Miss Maudie
They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions… But before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.
Pt. 1, ch. 11
Atticus Finch
It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived.
Pt. 1, ch. 11
Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.
Pt. 1, ch. 11
Atticus Finch
Folks don’t like to have somebody around knowin’ more than they do. It aggravates ‘em. You’re not gonna change any of them by talkin’ right, they’ve got to want to learn themselves, and when they don’t want to learn there’s nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language.
Pt. 2, ch. 12
Calpurnia
She seemed glad to see me when I appeared in the kitchen, and by watching her I began to think there was some skill involved in being a girl.
Pt. 2, ch. 12
Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
Atticus had said it was the polite thing to talk to people about what they were interested in, not about what you were interested in.
Jean Louise (Scout) Finch
Pt. 2, ch. 15
So it took an eight-year-old child to bring ’em to their senses…. That proves something – that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human. Hmp, maybe we need a police force of children.
Pt. 2, ch. 16
Atticus Finch
Apparently, Mayella’s recital had given her confidence, but it was not her father’s brash kind: there was something stealthy about hers, like a steady-eyed cat with a twitchy tail.
Pt. 2, ch. 18
Slowly but surely I began to see the pattern of questions: from questions that Mr.Gilmer did not deem sufficiently irrelevant or immaterial to object to, Atticus was quietly building up before the jury the picture of the Ewell’s home life.

Joseph asks…

I don’t get the quotes in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee?

I don’t get any quote about the mockingbird (e.g “Shoot all the bluejays you want but its a sin to kill a mockingbird” or “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”)

What are they”re meanings?

GardenersCardiff answers:

The point is that mockingbirds are not nuisance birds, and one should not kill an animal that not only is causing no problems but actually makes life more pleasant.

One could extend the concept to life in general. You can kill in self-defense, for example, but killing someone simply because you don’t like the color of his skin, think he’s inferior, or because you get a kick out of doing harm to other people, is wrong.

Sharon asks…

Here is a 2 part question for folks who find quotes and idioms entertaining.?

When going through a complicated ordeal a relative made this statement to me. “well she certainly led you down the garden path to pie in the sky didn’t she. I never was a big fan of quotes or idioms, so I wasn’t sure if she was being insulting or sarcastic.

What does “Down the garden path” and “Pie in the sky” mean?
And if you discover a supposed friend has lead you down the garden path, to pie in the sky. Is she considered to be a true reliable friend?

GardenersCardiff answers:

When you are led down the garden path, the garden looks so beautiful and you wont notice that you are being decieved…….and pie in the sky is something that you cannot reach or achieve
