Robert asks…

Why is it illegal for me to grow my own Tobacco? Why is it illegal for Native Americans to sell the tobacco…?

they grow to people outside of the reservations?

Is it because the Tobacco people where the first politicians to gain a stranglehold on the Government?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow my own tobacco. So does one of my brothers. He’s a cop. Native Americans sell tobacco regularly. Perhaps you have some brain disorder that makes you see things backwards.

Recent law changes have stopped some on line companies from selling to other states due to the fact they were not collecting nor reporting the sales to the states. No more tax free stuff. They must either collect the taxes themselves or report all sales to the states.

Daniel asks…

Does anyone know of a good dry smokeless tobacco still in production?

I used to get a case of Eight Brothers Chewing Tobacco from Swisher after Swisher bought them out, but apparently they aren’t producing that line any longer. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good “dry” smokeless tobacco company still producing today.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Grow your own. That way it wont have all the radioactive pesticides on them too! Will work out cheaper!

Mark asks…

What do I need in order to grow my own tobacco?

I live in Arizona. When should I start and what do I need?

GardenersCardiff answers:

No license needed. All you need is the seeds. It will grow anywhere Tomato’s grow. The Indians in Arizona raised wild tobacco long before the white man settled the land. .

There are hundreds of different types of tobacco. Pick the type you want to use and grow it. Burly types are the most common for all around use.

Google Nicotinia Tobaccum. You will get more information than you can read.

Betty asks…

I am growing my own tobacco plants but can i legally sell/give away the leaves? *UK ONLY*?

I have read on the HMRC web site that the product is not taxable until it is in a state that is ready to be smoked – i.e. shredded. Does that mean i can legally: buy the seeds, grow the plant, harvest and cure the leaves and then sell it? if the buyer then shreds it to be smoked, i guess it would be their responsibility to pay the tax wouldn’t it? Does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You’ve misunderstood the rules a little. By drying and curing the leaves, you convert them into a condition in which they may be smoked and they become taxable. If it was that easy to avoid the tax, then hand rolling tobacco would be sold as the bare leaves with the option to shred them according to personal preference. Using your interpretation, even hand-rolling ‘baccy would be exempt as you can’t smoke it without rolling it into a cigarette or stuffing it into a pipe.

If you give away prepared tobacco leaves then you still have to pay the tax. If you grow and prepare solely for your own consumption, then within limits, you don’t have any tax liability. If you sell the prepared leaves then not only do you have to pay tax, but you have to accord with the strict rules regarding advertising, sales restrictions and package labelling, including mandatory health information and warnings.

Carol asks…

What is the vegan take on tobacco products?

Are there any actions in the fine tobacco product industry that we should be aware of?
It seems harmless enough, but with those vegans, you’d be surprised…Some of the flavorings for the small percentage of tobacco products that are flavored might be of some concern, maybe?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Vegans are generally health freaks and so would not smoke. There’s probably all kind of chemicals in tobacco that aren’t vegan so I guess the best bet for a vegan if they want to smoke would be to buy the tobacco and roll the cigarettes themselves. Or they could grow their own tobacco. But you would think a vegan would have enough common sense not to smoke. I’m VEGETARIAN and I don’t smoke, and never have. It’s a bad habit that damages your lungs and eats up your cash and causes cancer and other diseases.

Donald asks…

Can a tribe grow it’s own tobacco on soverign land ?

I am a member of a small tribe in California and we want to know about the taxation and laws regarding growing tobacco. It would be “high mountain tobacco” and only from ceremonial consuption as it has a very high nicotine content.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Anyone in the country can grow tobacco without any government license or permission.

I grow English Burley , Virginia Bright and also seeds from last years crop , what ever may develop . It is the curing and treatment which makes it a dipping use . I really enjoy the Burley.

Anyone on here know how to grow tobacco and then turn it into chewing tobacco?

Nancy asks…

Is growing my own Tobacco and smoking with no added chemicals better then buying it from the store?

So, i’m looking into growing my own tobacco and I want to know, will it be better for me than buying it from a gas station. It’ll be smoked, most likely it’ll end up being a cigar, but it’ll be straight from the plant, no added chemicals. Will it be better and still addictive?

GardenersCardiff answers:

You may be undertaking a little more then you may want to.
I mean the tobacco in gas stations may be crap but it has been honed over years and years to be as crappy as it is today. The curing process alone is mind-boggling. Fun! But mind-boggling. Your tobacco may not taste good the first few plants. Especially if you have never grown a plant before. As for it being better, as i said tobacco companies took years to make their stuff and your just starting. They do all types of soil testing and ph testing. So it would be hard to say. As for the nicotine, cigarettes contain 10% nicotine. Tobacco naturally grows with any where from .05% to 3% Nicotine, depending on the strain. The other is added by the company along with other chemicals. So your first cigar probably wont taste good, smell good, and will have less nicotine. Overtime you should be able to make something more palatable but thats the fun of growing your own.

Joseph asks…

What makes cigarettes bad or cause cancers?

What makes cigarettes bad or cause cancers?I don’t smoke, but I was just trying get what you think?
Is it the actual burning and inhaling of the smoke?
Is it the nicotine in tobacco that’s bad?Could they not some how get the nicotine out of them and would it taste bad to people if they did?
I know the nicotine part is the addictive part so if they removed it wouldn’t people not have the habit anymore.
Are people that grown their own better off than the people that go buy a pack the store?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well the reason cigs cause cancer is because there are thousands of trace amount chemicals in them that dont agree witht the human body sometimes.

The burning and inhaling of the smoke is a chemical change of what the cigs are made of and that in itself is harmful.

Most smokers’ taste buds in their mouths do not function properly, so taste is not so much of and issue.

Nicotine is addictive, some say more then heroin, that is not the only reason people smoke though. It is relaxing and habitual.

If people were to grow their own, i would suggest a healthier, non-addictive and more relaxing plant than tobacco, i think you know what i mean 🙂

Paul asks…

Can I grow my own tobacco plants to smoke legal home made cigarettes. How would I obtain one?

Maria asks…

Is it legal to grow tobacco at my house?

I live in the United States, and I really would like to get into the premium tobacco industry. Possibly the cigar industry or the pipe industry. I was just wondering if it is legal to grow (or try to grow, ha ha) tobacco at my residence. I figure I can get some basics down before I attempt to get into the industry.
Thanks!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow tobacco at my house. It’s completely legal to grow it but not to sell it. You can however sell whole leaf tobacco so long as the midrib is not removed. Surprisingly there is a market for such a thing. Roll your own tobacco users often seek out whole leaf tobacco as do some pipe smokers. It is unfortunate that there are few people who make their own cigars these days.

The good old USDA will even supply you with free seeds if you are willing to jump through a few hoops. It takes quite some time for tobacco seeds to grow large enough to plant outdoors so you had best get started right away.

Sharon asks…

Why is it illegal to grow your own tobacco?

Is it because the gov’t is, oh so concerned about our health, or is it to make sure the Big Tobaccy has no competition?
Just goes to show that, once again, Americans are free-er [sic] than Canadians, because it is illegal to grow it in Canada.
Alas! I am hoping for a Canadian Revolution, so that we can be as free as our American cousins some day.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Growing your own tobacco is legal nearly everywhere. Providing you grow your own tobacco on a small scale which cannot be mistaken for a business set up, and you keep all your homegrown tobacco for personal use

Carol asks…

I want to know how to start rolling my own cigarettes?

Basically, I know nothing about rolling your own tobacco. I want to start because it’s cheaper and it doesn’t have nicotine or any of the really bad stuff that’s usually found in regular cigarettes.

So, cigs that I like are:

Pall Mall Menthol
Marlboro Reds
Marlboro Menthol
Camel Crush
Camel Blue
Newports
etc

What kind of tobacco should I buy that would be similar to any of those cigarettes? I just don’t want to buy the wrong kind and have it taste awful.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You have been greatly misinformed. All tobacco contains nicotine. The tobacco plant produces the nicotine itself. Many tobacco blends on the market that are made for rolling contain many different additives. I grow strait pure tobacco and I can tell you it is not nearly as pleasant as the stuff the tobacco companies put out. Many of the additives the tobacco companies use are flavorings to make it more pleasant to smoke.

Please do some real research on this matter before you end up fooling yourself.

Chris asks…

Why is it illegal for me to grow my own tobacco?

Is it because I might not lace it with strychnine, cyanide, or asbestos?
What if I agree to poison it like they want?

I heard that you can’t unless you have a federal license, and they only allow a handful of those licenses to be distributed throughout the country.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It is currently legal in all 50 states to grow your own tobacco. The USDA even sent me free tobacco seeds last year, (you have to request them). It’s actually legal to sell tobacco, (whole leaf only without the midrib removed). Any processing will require you to get a permit before you can sell it.

The USDA provides seeds for both research and education. Tobacco seeds are not the only seeds they provide. You do not have to be a teacher, a company, nor a scientist. You do have to provide your results once your project is finished. In my case I am attempting to cross one variety with another in order to produce a hybrid of the Rustica strain that will grow larger and produce less nicotine.

Steven asks…

Information on Growing my own Tobacco?

I would appreciate advice on tobacco horticulture.
Not anti smoking advise please.
I live in Victoria australia. I have ardered some seeds (virginia from USA). Where I live is typical dairy farm land.
Anyting grows here with care. Hot summers, cold and wet winters, no snow.

GardenersCardiff answers:

If only I knew in what state you live. Different types of tobacco are raised in different locations. Flue cured, and fire cured in the eastern coastal regions. Maryland well in Maryland and surrounding areas. Burley is for the most part a highland tobacco, raised in the Appalachia Mountains and the area west into Kentucky and Tennessee. The difference is basically how each are worked and processed. If you want tobacco for a flower garden, the hardest part of raising it might well be finding plants to set out. If you want it for your personal use, be aware that the tobacco you buy in stores has been aged (sometimes for years) to mellow the taste and bitterness before processing into consumer products.

It doesn’t appear that I have answered your question, but maybe this gave you some information that is helpful.

Virginia tobacco will most likely be burley or flue cured. Either way the seed are very small. The best way to start plants is in a float bed. You will need a styrofoam tray that is divided into sections ( usually 100 0r more to each tray) . Fill the tray with potting soil, gently pack each section to firm the soil. Place one seed to each section. Do not try to cover the seed. We use a machine to seed the trays. Place the seeded tray in water and cover with plastic sheeting raised above the tray. In a manner like a small greenhouse. The seed should sprout in about two weeks, and be ready to transplant in about six to eight weeks. Plants should be transplanted when they are about 1/3 meter tall. Transplant 1/2 meter apart in rows 1 meter wide. Cow manure makes a great fertilizer for tobacco. It’s best to plant in the evening to avoid wilting. Add a small amount of water when planting. When plants bloom break out the tops, usually about shoulder high. Weekly after topping you will need to remove sprouts (suckers) that will grow above every leaf. Allow tobacco to grow for six to eight weeks after topping. How you harvest the crop will depend on how you plan to cure your tobacco. Flue cured requires barns specially designed for that purpose. With flue cured you pick off the leaves. Burley is harvested by cutting the stalk, then “speared” onto a stick before being hung in a barn or on a scaffold outside. Each leaf is graded by leaf texture and color after curing.
Hope this helped.

Maria asks…

How hard is it to grow tobacco? Is it legal for anyone to grow it for private use?

Is tobacco farming for private use allowed? How do you start? Where can you get the plants?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It’s probably not as easy as you might think, but it is possible and it is legal. It is not legal to raise it to sell, unless you have a special license to do so from the government. But for your own personal use, it is permissable and there are many web sites with helpful information. That said, I wish you would quit smoking. It is really a deadly habit.

However, if you want to investigate it further, here is an excellent web site from a reputable source (the University of Florida) that goes through the ins and outs of it.

Ken asks…

How did White people think the slavery situation was going to end?

I mean, did you guys expect slavery to go on forever, or did you know that eventually it would have to end? I just cannot imagine how these slave owners slept at night knowing that they were surrounded by people they claimed to own as property….Secondly, why do white people complain about blacks when you guys were the once who hauled us over here? I guess it must be the sins of the fathers falling upon the children…If you all had been willing to grow your own cotton, tobacco and sugarcane (in the Caribbean) We obviously would not be in the West in such numbers as we are. So please stop complaining about it, because you are reaping what was sowed.
Since I know that white people get together and talk about these things in secret, I am asking this question. You answers will not offend me.
I am fully aware that black Africans sold other black Africans into slavery. They will get theirs in the afterlife. The pits of hell are waiting. However, if I kidnapped someone and then sold them to you, we are both guilty…So pointing out this fact does not absolve the white slaveholders.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The southern Conservatives were not concerned with the future, but only with their own privileges. As long as they could rape their sex slaves they didn’t care about the future, and they were prepared to do anything to preserve their present.

This hasn’t changed much today. The Conservatives are ignoring the threats of climate change and globalization that threaten the furure welfare of the Union, but as long as their wealth and privilege can be maintained they will do so, regardless of the cost.

Treason takes many forms.

For the record, my family comes from Wesr Virginia and seceded from Virginia to avoid fighting for slavery. I am pretty sure, given how long slavery has existed, that we all have slave owning ancestors somewhere.

Robert asks…

Should I invest in tobacco and rolling papers since people will be rolling their own pretty soon?

Prices nationwide range between $4 a pack to around $9 per pack (depending on where your at).

Most of this price increase is due to new “sin taxes” = smokers are bad for smoking, tax them.

But won’t people eventually realize one small investment in a rolling machine, rolling papers, and your own tobacco would save A FORTUNE?

GardenersCardiff answers:

If I smoked, I would probably grow my own. Not hard to do. I like to garden, so its not that big of a deal to grow a plant. About as hard as growing green beans. You can even grow it in a very large pot or a 5 gallon bucket on a fire escape.

Obama will probably send out the excise tax people to catch the small guy thogh.

Michael asks…

how do i turn my own tobacco into sweet aromatic pipe tobacco?

im planning on growing my first crop of tobacco this year and i want to know after i harvest and cure my tobacco how to i turn the cured tobacco into a sweet smelling pipe tobacco? and how can i turn it into a sweet chewing tobacco? also can i just put it straight into a cig and smoke it or do i have to age it?

Carol asks…

How do you make tobacco flavorings?

They can get a little pricey when growing tobacco for your cigarettes. Does anyone know what is in the flavorings so I can make it myself?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I roll my own cigarettes, when I desire a different flavor I put in a few slices of fruit,{like 2 or 3} of apples, or orange or lemon rinds, fresh mint leaves etc, keep in the refrigerator or other cool place, just be sure not to over do it or your tobacco will get too moist, even just 1 small slice will keep your tobacco from drying out without adding flavor.

Mark asks…

Is it legal to grow ones own cigarette tobacco?

And can I sell the surplus? And must it grown in the Virginia area?

GardenersCardiff answers:

It is legal in all fifty states to grow your own tobacco. It’s even legal to sell whole leaves so long as the mid rib is not removed. It can not be processed in any way or you will have to get a license to sell it. Some states may have limits on how much you can grow so check before planting a whole field of it.

Ken asks…

Is it illegal for someone under 18 to grow/smoke their own tobacco?

Tobacco is a regulated product with an age restriction on it, right? But it is, indeed, a plant (*cough* just like marijuana, so why is THAT illegal? *cough*). So, I was wondering if it was illegal for someone under the age of 18 to grow tobacco on their own accord… also, if it was illegal for them to pick and dry it themselves and chew or smoke it? This is in regards, mainly, to North Carolina, but if you know the rules in any other state or country, I’d be interested in knowing that, too. Thanks.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I grow my own tobacco in Arkansas and no one has bothered me. Not yet, anyway. Tobacco has other legitimate uses besides human consumption. It is a beautiful plant, attracts hornworm moths away from your tomatoes, and can be used to make an organic insecticide. It grows fairly well in pots and can even be used as a houseplant.

North Carolina Tobacco Law

Purchase by persons under the age of 18 years:

* It is illegal for anyone under age 18 to buy, to attempt to buy, to receive or to use a false or misleading proof of age for the purpose of purchasing or receiving any tobacco product or cigarette wrapping papers.
* Persons under age 18 engaging in such activities are guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor, which is a criminal offense punishable by up to 30 days of community service and up to a $1000 fine.

I don’t see anything here preventing you from growing your own. It does not say that possession is a crime either. “Receiving” means getting it from someone else, however. If you get it from a plant, is that “receiving?” I would say “No,” but a judge might say otherwise. Also, you cannot buy rolling papers. I don’t think that you would stop a cop from writing you a citation by saying, “It’s legal because I grew it myself.”

Thomas asks…

What are the chances of a smoker who smokes 1-2 cigarettes a day to die from cancer?

I grow my own tobacco and yeah title says the rest.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The chances are rather high dear. If cancer misses you, then you could also die from emphysema, another common tobacco caused disease. It is a rather unpleasant way to go. Basically you drown from the inside….

Enjoy !

Charles asks…

Is smoking my own tobacco better safer?

Would growing and smoking my own tobacco be safer than smoking factory made? Since it doesnt have the rat poison and all that stuff?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I know that commercial tobacco uses bug spray and other adulterants.

If you have the patience and know-how to grow your own, why not?

Sandy asks…

how old do u have to b to buy tobacco seeds and then grow the tobacco?

i really want to grow tobacco at home, its something my family used to do, but when my great grandpa died it all stopeed. im 14 and im really serious about doing this. for family tradition and i love to smell and taste of homegrown tobacco!

thanks
whats the youngest you can get a visa card?

GardenersCardiff answers:

I bought my seeds from New Hope Seed Company. I think they have the best prices and selection, but visit their website and decide for yourself. I don’t think there are any age restrictions for buying seeds. Some people simply grow tobacco for the beauty of the plants. New Hope charges $1.99 for 100 seeds, although you get much more than 100, nobody actually counts them.

My plants are only about 2 inches tall right now and will be ready to go in the ground in about 3 weeks. You will love growing your own tobacco and reviving that family tradition.

Nancy asks…

Will growing my own tobacco be less harmful for me?

I know that smoking is bad. So please do not preach to me. I want you to respect my decision as I respect yours.

So, if I grow my own tobacco, and dry it to make my own cigarettes, will it be safer for me? It will not contain any harmful chemicals except for nicotine. Could I still get cancer? Will it make it less likely that I will get caner? scientific research and studies would be great.

GardenersCardiff answers:

You will STILL get cancer, Bubba.
When nicotine mixes with your saliva & enters your bloodstream, it increases your chances of getting mouth, tongue, gum, throat, lung or pancreatic cancer.
It can also interrupt blood flow to your penis resulting in diminished sex drive & cause erectile dysfunction or impotence. – but – I forgot – you already KNEW that! Right?

George asks…

Is it illegal to grow tobacco in the Republic Of Ireland?

My friend smokes and she doesnt really have the money so i was wondering is it illegal for her to grow her own tobacco
What about a liscence, do you need one to grow it legally?

GardenersCardiff answers:

NO,it isn’t!
Don’t be ridiculous.

Helen asks…

Is hydrogen peroxide naturally found in tobacco or is it added?

I am curious to learn if hydrogen peroxide is found naturally in tobacco or if it is added by tobacco producing companies. Also what other oxides are found in tobacco and are they found naturally in it or are they added? Will growing ones own tobacco eliminate these oxides which are the main causes of cancer, emphysema and other illnesses caused by cigarettes? Please don’t advise me to quit as I am already in the process of doing so and am just curious. Thanks for all the help.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It isn’t found naturally, and it isn’t added by tobacco companies. Burning the tobacco creates OH free radicals by homolytically breaking C-O bonds in the sugars and sugar polymers (cellulose, for example) that give the leaves their structure. Two OH radicals can combine to form hydrogen peroxide, but the real damage is caused by the OH radicals themselves – the danger of peroxide is that the O-O bond is easily cleaved to form two OH radicals which can do a lot of oxidative damage.

Growing your own baccy won’t change a thing. If you’re a cigarette smoker you might want to start rolling your own, though. Tobacco companies do add nitrates and nitrites to tobacco and to cigarette paper so that the cigarette burns evenly (and of course burns away without going out if you set it down, so you’ll have to light another one.) These are also carcinogens, which you won’t find in rolling tobacco or in retail cigarette papers.
