Mark asks…

What will food and services cost when we deport all Mexican workers?

No one is showing the average american the data that shows just how much food and service prices will rise as a result of exporting all Mexican workers. Data is showing congress that people in large cities will go into civil war because of shortages of food. Many of the extremely wealthy people in this country have been informed to buy land in extreme Southern United States where they will be able to grow their own food and secure older southern workers who have experience in producing food to survive. This confidential document shows that the United States if deporting workers that we would be dependent on foreign countries for food just as we are for oil. The populations that will be affected the most are the urban areas and poor and minorites. This is the reason that many of the most powerful people in american are buying rural farms very quitely in the Southeast United States. Within 5 years major food shortages will exist in meat and vegetables.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Give it a break–the facts below

I will speak for many farmers-the 80% who don’t want illegals here. Your food is covered-most farmers do not support the big corp farms who use migrant workers.

Less than 10 percent by Mexico (10%pickers-less10% other farm related)–the other 90% of the farms say your welcome. We don’t need you -you need us. Be nice

“Phillip Martin, an economist at the University of California, Davis, has demolished the argument that a crackdown on illegals would ruin it, or be a hardship to consumers. Most farming — livestock, grains, etc. — doesn’t heavily rely on hired workers. Only about 20 percent of the farm sector does, chiefly those areas involving fresh fruit and vegetables.

The average “consumer unit” in the U.S. Spends $7 a week on fresh fruit and vegetables, less than is spent on alcohol, according to Martin. On a $1 head of lettuce, the farm worker gets about 6 or 7 cents, roughly 1/15th of the retail price. Even a big run-up in the cost of labor can’t hit the consumer very hard.

Martin recalls that the end of the bracero guest-worker program in the mid-1960s caused a one-year 40 percent wage increase for the United Farm Workers Union. A similar wage increase for legal farm workers today would work out to about a 10-dollar-a-year increase in the average family’s bill for fruit and vegetables. Another thing happened with the end of the bracero program: The processed-tomato industry, which was heavily dependent on guest workers and was supposed to be devastated by their absence, learned how to mechanize and became more productive.”

If every illegal alien here today currently left America, the immediate economic impact would be insignificant and over the long haul, the impact would likely be negligible.

Got it!

Employment-the same-thing-not much of an impact
do your research here. We manage well before. Quit looking for excuse like the big corps do.

We will have some shortages–but because of drought and other things——I know corps will say different—get informed. Stop the spread of lies.

David asks…

How many libs are willing to go back to the horse & buggy age to combat global warming?

The days where we grew our own food, hunted for our own meat, sewed our own clothes etc?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Very few. They talk a good game but action is another thing.

Thanks for posting a non Ron Paul question 🙂

Paul asks…

Why do we in the United States subsidize cotton farming?

I am not against farming subsidies in general since we would need to grow our own food if there is another major global war, but why subsidize the cotton barrons? This seems like a huge waste of tax payer money just to enrich the politically influential cotton barons. It is cheaper to import atleast some of our cotton.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The problem is that very large benefits go to a few groups who therefore have an incentive to work very hard to keep the subsidies. The costs are widely distributed – they affect millions of consumers, but the costs are pretty small for each consumer, so they have little incentive to lobby against the subsidies.

William asks…

How can i tell if my Mushroom Spores are contaminated?

I am just starting to grow my own mushrooms and i need help knowing what to look for to determine if theyre contamiated. some of my cakes are different colors then the others. and i have to throw them out if theyre contaminated. How do you tell?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Umm mycylium (the “roots”) should only be white – off white. Any other colors in there should be considered contamination (ie mold) and the cakes should be removed. If there are splotches of furry looking dufferent colored shyt then definitely discard. If theres funky smells, discard. You can try to salvage but success of these salvaged cakes is little to none. When it comes to shrooms, dont f around cuz bad shrooms can make u rly sick.if u have a microscope than u can look at the substrate under the microscope for contamination… But when innoculating you must make sure everything is clean (rubber gloves, spray glade or other disinfecting spray constantly, vaccuum so no dust, and no airflow are just SOME precautions). Be careful and happy growing!

Sandra asks…

Is there any place online that will ship magic mushroom kits to the United States?

I really want to grow my own magic mushrooms but I cant find any place online that sell the grow kits that will ship to the United States. Can someone help me out?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Not many places will ship, its a risky business, the good thing about magic mushrooms is that they don’t show up on a drug test, and drug dogs don’t sniff for em

Richard asks…

Would it be a good idea to grow your own vegetables instead of flowers?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes, if you have a garden or allotment it’s a great way to supplement your diet. I shared a house with a friend for several years and in the garden, which wasn’t very big, we managed to grow runner beans, broad beans, onions, garlic, courgettes, rhubarb, peas, tomatoes and several varieties of herbs.

Home-grown vegetables always taste better and you have the satisfaction of getting something to show for the work you’ve put in. If you’re new to growing there are plenty of books on the subject which you can buy or borrow and when you buy seeds, the planting instructions are printed on the packet.

You need seed trays, a decent set of gardening tools, a greenhouse (or if that isn’t possible, a cold frame), flower pots, watering can, beanpoles, lots of twine, some bird netting (but you don’t want to discourage the birds completely – see below), some kind of insect repellent, a compost bin, a bit of muscle power and some patience.

One good thing to do is set up a bird table with plenty of seeds and vegetable scraps to encourage the birds, especially at this time of year when it’s nesting season and they’re raising their young. Not only will they be less likely to start feasting on your seedlings, they will also gobble up lots of creepy-crawlies that would otherwise attack your plants.

If you’re really lucky you might even find you have a resident hedgehog. These are called the gardener’s friend for a good reason – they eat slugs and other pests. So do slow worms. Slow worms like to hide under rocks – put down a few rocks on a patch of bare earth and who knows, you might find one.

Reward will come when you realise you have produced e.g. A year’s supply of garlic…

Ken asks…

Do you grow your own vegetables, South Africa?

.
I grow my own tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peppadews and chillies.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes.
Tomatoes, chillies, onions, green beans and leeks.
Rosemary, garlic chives, thyme, parsley and basil.
It is so nice to go and get your vegetables and herbs fresh from the garden.

Donna asks…

Is it more expensive to grow your own vegetables ?

During World War Two, Americans grew their own vegetables in victory gardens . By the same token, in the early 1970s, the United States government recommended Americans grow their own vegetables in “inflation gardens” to deal with inflation . Every so often I’ll read a “How To Save Money” article that says “Grow your own vegetables in a graden . My mom had a garden and she claimed that it was much more expensive to grow your own vegetables . She just had a garden because she enjoyed gardening . I’ve often said “My mom had a garden, and she always said it’s more expensive to grow your own vegetables !” . There have been times when somebody’s said “No, it’s actually cheaper to grow your own vegetables !” .
Now I don’t know wehat to think . Who’s right ? Did my Mom turn a cheap hobby into an expensive one ? Is it cheaper or more expensive to grow your own vegetables ?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Heck no! I grow my own veggies and just bought red peppers to tide me over until I can harvest the ones on my plant. They were on sale for $1.99 a piece. I only paid $1.99 for each of the three plants I have and they each have about 8 peppers in various growth stages that I am waiting till maturity to harvest. Same goes for my tomato plants. I have romas, grape, beefeaters and Big Berthas. I don’t believe I paid over $3.00 for any of my plants but just paid $2.99 a pound for romas, 2 containers for $3 for grape tomatoes while I’m waiting for them to turn red. Even if I throw in the water and organic fertilizer growing my own veggies, citrus, avocado and herbs is saving me money. Besides nothing beats eating veggies right out of your own garden, sharing your harvest with friends and neighbors and controlling and knowing what chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides WEREN’T used on what you are eating.

Grow Your Own Tobacco?

I,m just totally curious, but is it legal to grow your own tobacco? Someone made this suggestion on a local Rants and Raves board, and I’m wondering if there are any laws forbidding it…Anyone know?

GardenersCardiff answers:

In Missouri it is OK to grow but I have not sold any.
