Richard asks…

Does any one know about having black walnut trees and a garden?

My parents have been trying to grow a garden for several years now. Everything they seem to plant dies off rather quickly. They asked around and were told it was because they have two black walnut trees. Does any one know how this works? Is there a certain distance you need to keep? Are there vegetables that are immune to them? Or is the only way to stop it by cutting the trees down? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Linda asks…

How to get traffic to my blog?

I have a blog about gardening with some post. I have some readers daily, but I’d like to have more. I share my posts on Twitter, FB etc. and I have submitted it some blog directories. Can you give me some suggestions on how I can get more readers?

GardenersCardiff answers:

1) Keep posting new and interesting articles so that you will always get returning users and they will also refer your blog to theirs friends and family.
2) You have to participate in some good forum and add your blog URL in your signature.
3) Add Facebook Like Button in your blog ( if possible)
4) If possible create write proper Meta Tags for all pages.

Chris asks…

How do you harvest vegetable garden seeds?

I’ve got tomatoes, bell peppers, beans, cucumbers, squash, hot peppers, lettuce, etc. maturing in my garden now. Is there a trick to saving seeds? I’ve never tried it before.

GardenersCardiff answers:

The mention above about hybrid plants is valid. Hybrids will not grow true to the plants that you had this year. Check to see what you had. If they aren’t hybrids then the following will apply-

Peppers and squash can be taken from the mature vegetables and dried.

Beans can be let to dry on the vine and the seeds taken from them when they are completely dry.

Tomato seeds need a little work. We’ll have a blog entry on our website in a few days about the process for saving tomato seeds.
